Lifestyle Update
October is Alzheimer’s Awareness month, and I wanted to share some of the most recent stats: Nearly 500,000 new cases of Alzheimer’s will develop this year. It is the 7th leading cause of death in the U.S., and did you know that one out of every nine people over 65 have Alzheimer’s Disease, and 2/3 of those are women? Alzheimer’s affects so many people in our daily lives. To honor those diagnosed with this disease or those family members helping to care for someone with the disease, we are inviting the SunRiver Community to join the PMP Staff at the Annual St. George Alzheimer’s Association walk. This year’s walk will be on Saturday, October 21st, at 10am, at Red Cliffs Mall. Registration begins at 9am, followed by a ceremony at 10am, and the walk will start at about 10:20am. The walking route is a one-mile walk round trip, and the path is around the Red Cliff’s Mall. There is no charge to join the walk, but donations are encouraged. The Association does this walk every year to help raise awareness and funds for their non-profit organization, which helps support those with cognitive decline with research and medication, care for those with the disease, and support and education for family members. The Residents Service Committee is putting together a team to attend this walk and would love all Residents to join in on this great cause. If you would like to register to be part of this team, please reserve a free ticket on the website so we can plan for our team. You can make a donation at the walk, or donate online at any time, see the link below. We are encouraging everyone to join in the walk and wear a SunRiver St George shirt. It’s a great way to start your Saturday morning! Each registered participant will receive a promise garden flower. See below for more details on the flowers. Last year, they had 160 people who participated in the walk, and they want to try and double the numbers this year. Our goal is to have at least 50 Residents walking. PMP Staff will be donating their time to help with this walk; you will see many of them assisting with registration, water, and other stations. You will also see several of us joining the walk too. PMP is partnering with the RSC to help support this worthwhile organization that helps so many in Washington County, many of whom are Residents of SunRiver St George. Many years ago, the Alzheimer’s walk started in SunRiver St George, and it’s fun to come back and support his event again.

Shopping Trip – Summerlin Mall/Fall Vintage Market Days
Depart the Community Center at 10am and head to the Summerlin Mall and Vintage Market Days to find those favorite treasures to bring home. After a day of shopping and lunching with friends, you can relax as the bus takes you home. This trip is $35 per person. Don’t miss out on this trip; it’s been a favorite location to attend, and it’s exciting to take advantage of the outdoor Vintage Market at the same time. Did you have a blast on the last bus trip? Stuff Sale
It’s time to clean out the garage and make a little spending money. Bring your items to the Community Center on Saturday, October 14th, between 7-9am. Please remember not to leave before the end of the event, as we need to keep pedestrian areas free and clear from vehicles. We always get a good turnout from the greater St. George area. Tickets are on sale now and are only $7.50, which helps to cover advertising. Spots are limited, so get your ticket sooner rather than later. Many garage sale shoppers look forward to this event every year, and I am sure they will come ready to buy again this year. Don’t forget to stop by the American Legion Post 142’s booth to purchase your cup of coffee, as they use these funds to support their many projects each year.
Fitness Health Seminar
It’s National Healthy Lung Month on Wednesday, October 18th, from 5-7pm. Join Weston as he discusses what we can all do to help prevent lung disease. Healthy snacks are provided, and we encourage everyone to attend. Let’s discuss what we can do to keep our lungs healthy and increase our quality of life!

Humor In Meditation or Why Is The Buddha Laughing
The Laughing Buddha is the ultimate symbol of happiness - taking away problems, having good fortune and a fulfilling life. If you have seen a statue of the Laughing Buddha, you will recognize his round tummy and big smile. If you have one, you know to rub his tummy for luck and to remember to laugh. It is common to think that meditation is serious business. Oscar Wilde said, “Life is way too important to be taken seriously.” Humor helps us to relax. Laughter releases dopamine, the “feel-good” neurotransmitter. When you are laughing you are in the now, not stuck in the past or worrying about the future.
According to Mayo Clinic, laughter has many benefits both short term and long term. When you laugh you stimulate your heart, lungs, and muscles with an intake of oxygen rich air. Laughing activates and relieves the stress response increasing the endorphins released by your brain. It can help improve your immune system, relieve pain, improve your mood, and improve self-esteem.
Laughter helps us connect with other people. Victor Borge said, “Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.” When our group meets together for Meditation, we often find time to share humor and to connect with laughter. Come laugh with us on Wednesdays at 10am in the Multi-Purpose Room.

Mr. Foodie: SW Utah Restaurant Reviews
By Andy Margles
“Grande Mexican Flavor”
After getting a recommendation by neighbors (Thanks, Kim & John), I recently tried a brand-new, local Mexican restaurant, Los Tapatios. Open daily for lunch and dinner and located in the former home of a Chinese buffet (987 Bluff St., SG), the sprawling space has a lot of tables to fill. In addition, SW Utah has more than 50 Mexican restaurants, all competing for the same business. Could this new, but grande kid in town possibly succeed in this already overcrowded market? With Mrs. Foodie in tow, I decided to find out.
My first surprise was how many customers were already there. The restaurant had only been open a week and had done little if any advertising. Yet, somehow, at 5pm on a midweek night, this place was already more than half full! While waiting for our menu, we observed a lot of happy looking people chowing down on huge portions of tasty looking food.
The large, multi-page menu had all the “standard” Mexican fare, like burritos, chimichangas, enchiladas, etc., plus pages of special dishes. It also gave background information on the owners, whose heritage and family recipes are from Jalesco, Mexico.
It was extremely hard to make a decision with so many interesting choices, so we decided to go with their enchiladas, which was our neighbor’s suggestion. I tried the enchilada trio; one being a chicken mole, another a chipotle beef and the third, a pork with a chili verde (green) sauce. Mrs. Foodie got the chicken mole enchilada, one of her favorite dishes.
While we waited for our meal, we enjoyed the complimentary homemade chips and thin, but tasty salsa, washing them down with a sweet aqua fresca and a minty Mojito. Service is tableside and they have a full bar. Overall, prices on the food and drinks are a little higher than average for the area, but still quite reasonable.
Verdict: Each of the three enchiladas was absolutely delicious! The sauces were bursting with flavor and the fillings were tender and juicy. The accompanying Spanish rice was moist and flavorful, as were the beans.
In fact, we enjoyed our meals so much, that we returned with friends two weeks later. Two of the gastronomic highlights from that visit were the pork shanks with mole and prawns with mushrooms and onions, in a creamy chipotle sauce. These two dishes were both delicious and unique to our area. Our friends ordered the enchiladas, based on our reviews and seemed to enjoy them as much as we had on our earlier visit.
So; absolutely delicious food, several unique dishes and preparations, comfy booths, large portions, reasonable prices, nice staff, open on Sunday. WHAT’S NOT TO LIKE? I highly recommend Los Tapatios, another great new addition to our local restaurant scene

Swim Club
Next year’s Paris Olympics is now less than a year away: from July 27th to August 9th, 2024. Swimming is one of the oldest Olympic sports and has been part of every modern Olympics since the 1896 Athens games. Olympic swimming has largely been dominated by athletes representing the United States (who have won more than two hundred and fifty gold medals over the years).
The swimming format in Paris will be the second Olympic venue to include the same number of competitions for men and women. There will be a total of thirty-seven events (eighteen for men and women and one mixed event). One of the first to qualify for the Paris Olympics was Katie Grimes, a seventeen-year-old competitor with the Las Vegas Sandpipers Swim Club. She qualified last June in an open-water competition in Japan.
Although the first Olympic swimming events took place in a natural environment, since 1908 all swimming events have taken place in a pool. Different events have been added through the years, most recently the backstroke at the 1956 Melbourne games. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics was the first to schedule men and women to compete in the exact same programs. The Paris 2024 competition will see over eight hundred and fifty athletes vying for medals.
The 2024 pool events will occur at the Paris La Defense Arena (now under construction) and the two-day marathon swimming at Pont Alexandre III on the Seine River. The swimming pool events will be held in a 50-meter-long pool. The four strokes of the individual swimming events consist of the breaststroke, the backstroke, the butterfly stroke, and freestyle. Our SunRiver Swim Club members may find it too late to qualify for Paris next August! You can still get tickets or watch it on NBC like the rest of us, but then there is always the return of the Olympics to Los Angeles in 2028 (just a short trip down I-15!). In the meantime, lanes are open in our SunRiver pool to practice and work to improve your technique under the watchful eye of our great fitness staff! Plenty of time for senior swimmers to qualify for the 2028 games. A bit premature but... “Let the games begin.”
World Swim Day is an international holiday that encourages people around the world to be active in the water and raise money for learn-to-swim organizations. Grab some friends and go for a swim in the pool or open water!

Pegs and Jokers Club
Looking for a great way to socialize, have fun, and meet new friends? You are invited to join in the fun of Pegs and Jokers. The Pegs and Jokers club meets every Thursday night at 6pm in the Community Center. Pegs and Jokers is sort of a rendition of the game Sorry, where four players (two teams) go around the board trying to get their pieces home before anyone else. This game is a game of luck and simple strategy. It starts by setting up the game board and each player selecting their color and choosing a teammate. The first team to get their pegs from the starting point to the home area wins the game.
A favorite part of this game is that each round takes 30 minutes to an hour, which means a two- -out-of-three competition can be completed within the evening. Another beauty of this game is there is strategy involved, but a lot of the game is really the luck of the draw. No one player can dominate another and anyone can win. A big part of the game is helping your teammate.
The game is easy to learn. Each Thursday night, there is a first-time players table and a club Representative to help those new to the game (or those needing a refresher). You learn it by playing at a nice, relaxed pace. Rule sheets are available for use during play to explain the game and the function of each card. A few times a year, the club has a two-person per team tournament (participation optional), which is great fun.
The North American version of Pegs and Jokers evolved out of another game from centuries ago. Pachisi is known as the National Game of India. It’s incredible to think that a board game contrived so long ago can still be enjoyed today.
If you like games, you’ll love (I promise!) Pegs and Jokers.
Jeff Struthers
(Pegs and Jokers Club Secretary).
Pottery Club
Our Pottery Studio lost the use of the kiln room due to construction work from the beginning of March until the end of May. This did not stop activity in the adjacent Pottery Studio, and work piled up over these months awaiting the ability to fire pieces once again. Thanks to our kiln loaders and unloaders, we have finally caught up with the backlog.
During the time we could not fire, a group of six potters began a daunting project of creating a similar sculpture project. The exercise was an experience of seasoned sculptors encouraging and teaching others who were new to this use of clay. As the project progressed, each piece took on a different persona as each artist took their work in their own direction. It was a challenge to hollow out the bust but keep the integrity of the form. They say never become attached to what you make in clay until it is completed, and alas, of the six original projects so far, only two survived until the final firing. Some came apart during the end of construction, and some did not stay together in the bisque fire. One piece was a success in the bisque fire and is yet to be glazed. Such a lot of work and, for some, a lot of disappointment.
Billiards Club
Here are photos of the work in progress, a photo of one awaiting to be glazed, and photos of the pieces that came out of the glaze fire this morning, which is the last day of June at the time of this writing. At whatever stage, they are all amazing pieces of art!
The Billiards Club recently held the playoffs for the 23-3 8 Ball season. The top two players from each of the four groups participated in the single-elimination tournament. Of the six players, Allen Cope finished first, Randy Zenk finished second and Joe Babiarz was third. Dean Schweitzer, Joe Rubino and Bucky Burkhalter rounded out the top six players. Season 23-4 will start the week of September 10th and will last 9-10 weeks. The Billiards Club welcomes new members.

With cooler temps and smaller crowds, visiting Zion National Park in the fall is a must. But did you also know about Zion’s extended foliage season? From mountain tops to canyon bottoms, peak colors continue to creep their way down to lower elevations well into November. At lower elevations, foliage doesn’t peak until November, which means that the park’s epic hikes will be more spectacular than ever. Bring your most outdoorsy fleece and explore a whole new side of Zion, whether heading out on a gentle jaunt or an iconic adventure.
See you on the trail, Jil Baird, Hiking Club Secretary (701) 260-3089

When the Moon passes directly between the Earth and Sun, our Moon can fully or partially block out the Sun’s light. We call these events solar eclipses. This Saturday, October 14th, we can see a partial solar eclipse from St. George. If one is willing to drive about one hundred miles north of St. George, the Moon will appear centered in front of the Sun, but not large enough to fully cover the Sun. Astronomers call this event an annular eclipse. The name seems to imply that they occur each year, but annular comes from the Latin word annulus. Annulus means ring. When observed safely with a solar filter, the Sun looks like a ring or annulus.
On April 8th of 2024, the Moon once again passes in front of the Sun. This time, if you drive to Texas, the Moon appears large enough to fully cover the Sun. The sky dramatically darkens. One can easily see bright stars and the brightest planet, Venus. While the Sun’s disk is completely covered, you still see a satin white glow around the Sun. This is the Sun’s outer atmosphere, the corona. It can only be observed from the surface of Earth during a total solar eclipse. You may want to make plans to see one or both of these eclipses. On Tuesday, October 10th, Ron Smith will show you how to safely observe both eclipses. He will show you personal photos from past eclipses. They just might entice you to make plans for eclipse chasing, both on October 14th, and later on April 8th, 2024.
You must purchase tickets in advance to see the Ballroom presentation. Italian Sub Sandwich tickets cost $7.50. Popcorn tickets cost just $1.50. You can also see the program repeated on October 12th via Zoom. The Zoom presentation is free and can be viewed anywhere you have a computer. Make your eclipse plans now by coming to this program.
How can we be sure that “Meteor Crater” resulted from an impact rather than from volcanic activity? The same question applies to the Moon. The dark areas we observe on the Moon, and they cover nearly half of the Moon’s earthward facing side, are flood basalts. They resulted from massive lava flows that took place about 3.5 billion years ago. Is it possible that most lunar craters resulted from volcanic activity rather than impacts.

Emergency Preparedness Committee
Tom Clancy, Michael Crichton, and some other authors have had a good time in their novels with pandemics and other healthcare crises. They were fun to read about until COVID came. COVID brought such dangers much closer to home. What if a pandemic or bio-terrorism event actually happened? The Southwest Utah Health Department (SWUHD) worries about such things and has a plan. SunRiver, actually, is part of that plan. We have a closed POD (Point of Distribution) agreement with SWUHD to dispense appropriate medications should such an event occur. The POD is closed, and only SunRiver Residents and Staff may participate - no other Saint George residents or passers-by are included. On November 2nd at 9am in the Ballroom, the Preparedness Committee is having a closed POD distribution practice drill. We need your help to make this a useful practice session for the POD Team Members. We request Sunriver Residents to attend and participate in the drill. More details will be disseminated prior to November 2nd.
For many of these events, notice is sent out through community blasts and CERT emails. Anyone who wishes to receive CERT notifications may check the CERT box in the “Clubs and Groups” section of the SunRiverStGeorge. com website. CERT membership is not required; everyone is encouraged to do so and keep up to date on the most recent events. In addition, the monthly “CERT Refreshers” (additional training for CERT members) are open to anyone who wishes to attend. Again, CERT certification is not required.
