Welcome to the warmer weather as we head into June. The first official day of summer is June 21st, but here in Southern Utah, we start feeling summer way before that date. Summer means grandkid visits, vacations, and time together with friends and family. The daylight hours are longer, which means more time for sports at the pavilion and delicious BBQ foods. It is also a great time to head up to Pine Valley for hikes in cooler temperatures and visit Brian Head Resort for its summer entertainment. The following are some fun facts about June. June’s birthstone is the pearl, the moonstone, and the alexandrite. The June birth flower is the rose and the honeysuckle. June is also a very popular name for girls in the US. In both common and leap years, no other month begins on the same day of the week as June. June is also International Men’s Month. In June, we celebrate Flag Day on June 14th and Father’s Day on June 18th. All of us from PMP would like to wish all the SunRiver St George fathers an incredibly happy Father’s Day! We hope you are recognized by your family this month for all you have done for them. This month the events team is putting together some specials at the window to help keep you cool - think sundaes, root beer floats, and parfaits. Don’t forget that ice cream arrives back on the Poolside Café menu this month, and we have reduced our prices! Stop by and enjoy some ice cream and the view from the east patio, or enjoy your treat from air-conditioned, fitness lobby tables.
Many of our neighbors and friends have left for their summer homes or are enjoying vacations around the globe. We will see less people in the facilities for the next few months, but that does not mean we will stop having fun! For a full list of our activities this month, see the calendar and the events list in this publication.
Here I will highlight just a few of the special events this month:
June 5th – We are celebrating National Egg Day
National Egg Day is on June 3rd, but we are celebrating it on the 5th. We are having a summer brunch at 11am. Enjoy a delicious brunch, and the best part is that you do not have to do any dishes!
June 9th – We are celebrating National Iced Tea Day
National Iced Tea Day is on June 10th, but we are celebrating it on the 9th. Come and buy-one-get-onefree at the Café.
June 16th Is National Fudge Day Ryan will have a special treat for you at the Poolside Café. Please note that you can preorder dinners every Friday for the following week and for many of our special, national holiday treats you can pre-purchase your tickets, this way you can ensure your delicious dish is saved for you. Also, do not forget that you can enjoy the Indoor Pool and the East Patio while the Outdoor Pool is being constructed. The pool side’s doors will be open and there are lounge chairs and tables for your enjoyment. Please remember: if you pull a chair into the grass area, put the chair back on the cement before you leave. We want to protect the grass area as much as possible and we thank you in advance.
June 21st Is International Yoga Day
Come celebrate with us by joining a class! His monthly fitness seminar will be on the Great Outdoors on June 21st at 4pm. The monthly Computer Club seminar will be on June 13th at 4pm in the Computer Lab. It will cover the Samsung Health App.
Living in St. George is just like living in Montana - in reverse. Instead of being in your heated house, getting in your heated car, and going to heated stores, we are in our air-conditioned house, getting in our air-conditioned cars, and going to air-conditioned stores. Summer is coming. While living in St. George is not like living in Phoenix, Arizona (add an extra 10 degrees), it can get a bit warm here.
Even with the amenities and comfort that we have, it is important that we stay hydrated. The general rule of thumb is that in the summertime, we should drink between one-half and one gallon of water daily. If a person is exercising, the need is increased by up to double that amount. Certainly, all the members of the Hiking Club know they need to take plenty of water on their hikes.
However, what would we do if one day we turned on the tap and nothing happened? No water! In St. George, we are one problem away from a water emergency. Happily, we have not had one in the recent past. That is not to say we can’t have a problem. For this reason, various government agencies encourage every household to have an emergency supply of water. At least a two-week supply is suggested.
Recognizing that the suggested one-half to one gallon of water is for drinking only, we should probably have twice that when you add cooking and sanitation. Bottled water is a possible option. Some people store water in commercially available water barrels or jugs. Don’t forget the water in your water heater can be used as an emergency water supply if you have turned the supply valve off so it does not become contaminated. Next time you go to the tap to get a drink of water, think of what you would do if water did not come out of the spout.
Remember the old saying:
“Failure to plan is planning to fail.”
Pica Rica is neither the name of an 80’s Brazilian dance craze, nor the teen influencer who started the Duct Tape Challenge on the internet. Instead, PR is a new, local, much-awaited, Tex-Mex BBQ restaurant. Located at 25 Main St. SG., PR is open W-Th 11-6, F 11-8, Sat 10-8, Su 10-4 and closed M-Tu. No reservations are taken. Service is Panera Bread style and décor is minimalist.
It seems like billboards have been advertising this place forever and it was supposed to open last summer. They imported some enormous, custom-made smokers from Texas, so perhaps this caused the delay, along with the usual red tape. PR is the brainchild of Michael McHenry, Utah’s 2022 Restauranteur of the year and Jason Neeley, the former manager and partner in the still-fabulous tapas restaurant, Wood-Ash-Rye.
We went to PR for lunch, as it was still during their “soft opening” and they were running out of food by mid-day, regardless of their posted hours. The place was mobbed and we waited in line for an hour. I was really hoping it would be worth the wait…
The menus, up on the wall, were pretty simple. You can order smoked meat by the ½ pound, including brisket, barbacoa (beef cheeks), pulled pork and turkey breast and then, if you wish, add any side dish/s for $5 each. They also have smoked ribs, chicken wings and sausages. In addition, they feature three different tacos, three salads and four combination sandwiches. Everything on the menu is expertly smoked, not too heavy, not too light.
In addition, they have a number of delicious, bbq sauces, including their house original, and another one made with mole! Like almost everything here, theses sauces are home made.
Q: OK, Mr. Foodie, enough with all the details, how was the food?
A: Well, the brisket, which is really their featured item, is just fabulous! They kept passing out burnt ends during our wait in line and they were so good, I thought I might pass out!
Verdict: While all the items were very good, they almost detracted from the star of the show, the 18- hour smoked brisket. My advise: order the ½ pound brisket dinner, along with a side dish and dispense with the other distractions. Note: By the time this review is published, PR will have been open for almost 6 weeks. We visited on only their third day, really an unfair time to review a restaurant. However, the food was already great and should get even get better. Looks like we got some mighty fine bbq in our future. Yahoo!

Swim Club member Linda Blair has had a special connection with swimming her entire life. Except for the ten years she took off while her children were younger, she has spent most of her working years combining swimming with teaching both swimming and water exercises to those of all levels. She spent her career as a special education instructor and combined this with an adaptive swim certification for special needs students.
She began her love of swimming as a high school student and went on to compete and teach while a student at Case Western Reserve University. Her career included training and certifying students, especially helping them enter lifeguard programs.
She was certified to teach youth of all levels, from “guppy” to teenage, high school swimmers, and trainee lifeguards. She participated in the Huntsman Games soon after moving to St. George and was a triathlon participant here (as was one of her sons). She successfully taught swimming while moving around with her family and was able to retain her certifications for many years
Linda describes herself as never being a fast swimmer but attributes her success and lifelong enjoyment of pool time to endurance and technical training. She emphasizes technique, breathing discipline, and making every movement count. When talking about other exercise options, Linda emphasizes how important swimming can be to retain competency in most all other sports.
Linda is a pool regular, and her typical morning includes a water fitness class followed by her lap swimming regimen. Her lap swimming advice to each of us is, “Work on your technique, make every movement count, and you can swim forever!”
Each night we hear news about the US national debt and the need to, once again, raise our debt ceiling. Over thirty years ago, Ross Perot warned that America would face dire consequences if we could not restore fiscal discipline. Since then, the US national debt has grown nearly ten-fold, and the US still has a vibrant economy. The US dollar remains the primary currency used in world trade. Some economists advocate MMT, modern monetary theory. They claim that debt does not matter. Critics of MMT call it “More money today.”
As you might suspect, analyzing American debt is more complex than the rhetoric we hear in the media. There are actually ten forms of debt, some of which are out of control and some of which are not. Ron Smith will identify all ten forms of debt and which ones potentially pose a threat, and which ones don’t. Added to our potential debt crisis, America also runs up a huge annual balance of trade deficits. Is this a form of debt? What are the consequences of running up huge trade deficits?
You won’t want to miss this timely discussion of debt and how it may affect our future. The Ballroom program begins at 5:30pm on Tuesday, June 13th. The doors open at 5pm and you must purchase tickets in advance. The sandwich tickets cost $7.50, and the popcorn tickets cost just $1.50. If you cannot afford tickets, consider going into debt. Well, I hope not! On Thursday, June 15th, we will have a Zoom program for you to attend wherever you have a computer or tablet; the Zoom program starts promptly a 5pm. If you attend, I am indebted to you for your support.

Looking back, it is true. The SunRiver Resident Services Committee (RSC) has been delivering programs, seminars, and other activities that have enriched the living experience here in SunRiver for years. To confirm that statement, one only needs to look ahead.
For example, the Tuesday, June 20th, seminar at 2pm in the Ballroom will feature a panel discussion presented by a group of healthcare professionals from the Intermountain Foundation titled “Elevating Men’s Health.” This panel will explore the ways men can stay on top of their health, both physical and mental, and will utilize different screening devices to evaluate one’s health.
On Thursday, July 6, Coffee With A Cop will return to the Game Room. This popular activity showcases the St. George Police (and other responders) in a face-to-face environment where you may ask the question you have been wondering about and get the department’s best answers.
As per usual, the RSC Caregiver Group will be meeting on Tuesday morning, June 27th, at 10:30am-noon in the MultiPurpose Room.
Special Announcement: On Tuesday, November 7th, from 9:30-11am, a special conference on dementia will be presented for all SunRiver residents. Kate Nederostek, Caregiver Support Program Manager from the State of Utah Department of Human Services, will be the featured speaker.
Walk With A Doc will be taking a summer hiatus and will be picking up again this fall on Tuesday, October 17th.
Also, the program that helps you prevent falls, Stepping On, will return after a long, hot summer, with a start date of October 11th, 2023. Classes will be back in the Game Room. For more information on this helpful program, please contact Becky Moberly at (435) 862-9652.
