What are Polyphenols?
Many of us know that certain foods, like berries and green tea, are good for us. However, did you know what is behind their health benefits? Polyphenols are important plant chemicals that act as antioxidants and defend against oxidation and stress, and they play a key role in preventing a wide range of chronic diseases. Polyphenols also increase the production of antioxidants in the body which may protect against the damage caused by oxidation and inflammation. A diet rich in polyphenols may lower the risk of a wide range of degenerative and chronic disease. Polyphenols are found in many foods, particularly fruits and vegetables, making it easy to get a daily dose of these antioxidants. Did you know that cocoa products, including cocoa powder and dark chocolate, are among the top polyphenolrich foods? If you are like me, it is so exciting that our love for chocolate will also benefit our health! We invite you to come and celebrate National Chocolate Day with us on Tuesday, September 13th. Ryan will be making some delicious truffles at the Poolside Café. We hope you will enjoy this delicious treat, and now you know there are some benefits to eating chocolate!

National Grandparents’ Day
Event Tickets
All of us at PMP wish you a very happy Grandparents’ Day on Sunday, September 11th. We hope you receive a call, letter, or message from your special grandchildren on this day, letting you know just how special you are to them. I grew up very far away from my grandparents, but when I moved near them to go to school, I still remember how much fun it was at our Friday dinners and Sunday brunches. I only have one grandparent left, and I cherish our time together. Grandparents are very special people, and we hope you all feel loved, especially on this holiday celebrating YOU!
I have received many questions about tickets and when they are scheduled to be put up for sale. Most tickets go on sale 30-45 days prior to the event, depending on the type of event. There are times when we need to put tickets up much earlier due to the deposits required for a bus, tickets to a show, or other expenses we need to pay ahead of time. It is a good idea to check the Friday Events Email each week, as the Events Team will list the tickets that will be going on sale the following week. We do not want anyone to miss out on attending an event. If you have any questions, please feel free to email our Events Team at SR-Events@PMPmanage.com; we are here to help.

National Cheeseburger Day
What is more American than the classic cheeseburger!? By the late 19th century, the vast grasslands of the Great Plains had been opened for cattle ranching. This made it possible for many Americans to consume beef almost daily. The hamburger remains as one of the cheapest sources of beef in America. Adding cheese to hamburgers became popular in the 1920s. There are several competing claims as to who created the first cheeseburger. Lionel Stemberger of California is reputed to have introduced the cheeseburger in 1924. The cheeseburger started to appear on menus in 1928 for a whopping 25 cents. Other restaurants have claimed to have invented the cheeseburger, Kaelin’s restaurant in Kentucky said they invented the cheeseburger in 1934. One year later, the name cheeseburger was awarded to Louis Ballast of the Humpty Dumpty Drive-In in Denver, Colorado.

Pizza is most heavily associated with Italy, but pepperoni pizza is 100% American. Did you know that of all the pizza types, pepperoni is the runner-up? It comes in second, after cheese pizza. Pepperoni pizza is served in more than 1/3 of all pizza orders. It is one of America’s favorite toppings, and that is reason to celebrate. Did you know that 98% of Americans like pizza? Also, 22% of Americans eat pizza at least once a week and 25% of those eat a full pizza on their own. The top pizza location is Pizza Hut with 31%, followed by Papa Johns at 22%. Perhaps that is due to all the kids that only eat cheese pizza? I am sure if Chef Ryan’s pizza was open to the public, he would be on that list! No need to go all the way into town to pick up a mouth-watering, gooey, right out of the oven pizza paradise. Purchase your large pepperoni pizza pie ticket, and then pick it up on Tuesday, September 20th from the Poolside Café.
Shakespeare & Dinner
Did you know that this dish was called ‘Lou’s Special’ and was created by Lou Shepard back in the 1960s?
I hope reading about burgers has made you hungry! National Cheeseburger Day is on Sunday, September 18th, but we will be celebrating on Friday, September 16th. Ryan makes the best burger in town, and for one day only (Friday, September 16th) we are offering a buy-one-get-one-half-off deal for burger purchases in honor of National Cheeseburger Day. Not only is Ryan cooking his famous burgers, but he is also offering several different types of cheeses for your burger on this special cheeseburger day. You can order via the app, website, or the kiosk.
Our bus is filled, and we are heading up to beautiful Cedar City to enjoy the Shakespeare Festival and to watch the hilarious show, Clue, on Tuesday, September 6th. After the show, the group will drive up the canyon to enjoy dinner at Rusty’s Ranch House, which is nestled between the towering rock formations and the beautiful trees. You could not ask for a more relaxing and scenic location for dinner. This trip has become a Resident favorite, and we are planning to do this again next year. The bus will depart SunRiver at Noon, and we encourage everyone to be at least 15 minutes early. Also, watch for ticket announcements for other day-long bus trips, many of these sell out quickly.
One day a customer came in and asked for it by calling it a ‘Navajo Taco’, and that is what it has been known as ever since. Shepherd later said that a lot of people believed it was a traditional Navajo dish, but he would proudly admit that he was the creator. We are celebrating Shepard’s creation for our monthly Cultural Dinner. Cultural Dinner will be on Friday, September 23rd this month, and the full menu is Navajo Tacos and Navajo Peach Crisp. Since the Cultural Dinners are getting more popular, we have increased the number of tickets. Don’t wait to get your tickets; you don’t want to end up missing out! Come enjoy delicious food and great conversation with friends and neighbors at this monthly, trip-around-the-world, food event.
In Southern Utah, September does not quite have that fall nip-in-the-air, but we do see the temperatures cooling down from the triple digits. To celebrate the coming of the fall or autumn season, Ryan is cooking a delicious fall-themed dinner on Thursday, September 29th. Get your tickets today and get in that fall mood as we welcome the cooler weather, leaves changing, football, fall festivals, warm and delicious drinks, and much more. The menu includes Roasted Pork Tenderloin with Chipotle BBQ Sauce served with Bourbon Spaghetti Squash, Yam Mashers, and Steamed Snap Peas.
In the United States and the rest of the Northern Hemisphere, the first day of autumn is the day of the year when the Sun crosses the celestial equator moving southward (on September 22nd or 23rd). This day is known as the Autumnal Equinox. Autumn and fall are used interchangeably as words for the season between summer and winter. Both are used in American and British English, but fall occurs more often in American English. Autumn is considered the more formal name for the season.
Welcome Fall Dinner
National Queso Day To celebrate this fun day, Ryan will be making Quesadillas and Mulitas on Tuesday, September 20th for his lunch special at the Poolside Café. Mark your calendars so you do not miss out on this delicious creation. This Southwestern specialty has roots in the Mexican dish Queso Fundido, which originated in the 19th century, and the first known recipe dates back to 1896. Queso is the Spanish word for cheese, and in Texas and other Southwestern states it refers to a most delicious expression of melted cheese. Every Chef has their own spin on this delicious dish, and Ryan is excited to have you come and try his!
The largest cheeseburger ever made weighed 2,014 pounds and was said to have included 60 pounds of bacon, 50 pounds of lettuce, 50 pounds of sliced onions, 40 pounds of pickles, and 40 pounds of cheese. This record was set in 2012 by Minnesota’s Black Bear Casino, smashing the previous record of 881 pounds.

REMEMBER: IT’S ALL ABOUT THE SHOES... SAVE THE DATE: Swim Club Event - Patio Potluck, Saturday, September 17th, from 5-6:30pm.
A water shoe is a type of footwear that is typically used for activities where the feet are likely to become wet. They often have tiny holes in the bottom or sides of the shoe, allowing for quick water drainage and keeping the shoe light. Depending on the type of water workout you are going for, you may need to invest in a pair of solid water shoes. You should wear water shoes for strenuous workouts, such as water aerobics. Find a pair with rubber soles, foam padding, and good ventilation. You will want a shoe with strong, sturdy rubber soles to provide good traction while helping to absorb the impact of the hard pool floor.
The 2023 Computer Club Calendar and Photo Search
Water shoes keep your feet comfortable and protect your feet from injury. You can find water shoes with arch supports, or you may place your own inserts into your water shoes. Water shoes are lightweight, drain well, and dry fast. You can also buy a water shoe to be used just for yoga. This type of shoe does not have a hard bottom and is meant for floating when you are not making much contact with the bottom of the pool. Nowadays, water shoes are very stylish and comfortable. When choosing the right water shoes, consider the material, proper fit, tread, and traction. Remember to rinse off your shoes after using them and allow your shoes to dry thoroughly.
The SunRiver Computer Club will again be publishing a photo calendar for 2023 (see cover image from the 2022 calendar below), which will go on sale to the SunRiver Community this October. As with last year, we are asking Computer Club members to submit photos to be considered for the calendar. If you are not a member and would like to submit photos, it is very easy to join. Just click the “Become a Member/Receive Club Emails” on the Computer & Photography Club web page for information or come to the Computer Lab before or after any scheduled class and ask the instructor for help. All images submitted must be digital JPEG files and in landscape orientation (width must be greater than height). Standard 4 to 3 or 3 to 2 aspect ratios are preferred as these will fit the calendar format the best. Individuals may submit up to six images. Photos with unique seasonal interest, e.g., spring, summer, fall, winter, holiday, are encouraged to help us add variety to the final calendar. If you have any photos you wish to submit for consideration, please send them to Larry Nielsen at packman@sunrivertoday.com no later than September 12th.

Tennis Club
Advantage - this is a good, defensible position with ample time to hit balls. This is the second-best position to be in (following #1).

When it comes to playing doubles in tennis, recreational players will often stand where they think they’re supposed to stand. We watch the U.S. Open, and we see one person near the net and one person back, regardless of serving or returning serve. Fair enough. Now, why do they stand where they stand?
3. One player at the baseline and one player at the net –I hate to burst a bubble here, but this is the least advantageous position to be in. The net person is very susceptible to lobs which forces the baseline person to run pretty far to even reach the ball. It opens far too many angles as well. It is why when you watch the U.S. Open, you will often see teams racing to position #1 or a returning serve team in position #2. They only start in position #3 because someone has to serve, and the other team has to return the serve. So, what does this all mean to you? It means have fun. Stand where you are most comfortable; just know that your odds of winning a point increase as you go from #3 to #2 to #1. It’s that simple.
2. Both players near the baseline –
UPCOMING TENNIS MEMBER SOCIAL: Saturday, September 24 - This will be a welcome back from summer. Sign up on the Sports Court’s whiteboard. Stay safe out there!
“Now, Where Do I Go?”
Let me highlight the three basic positions in doubles:
1. Both players near the net –

Disadvantage - this position is susceptible to drop shots and sharp angles, although those are challenging shots to make (best take up Taffy’s tips for bettering those shots).
Advantage - this is the best position to win a point. It is easier to put balls away, and that position puts a lot of pressure on an opponent to make a good shot. Disadvantage - it leaves a team very susceptible to lobs.

This is what happens with automatic writing - writing without conscious thought. You may have a starting point - a thought or a question - then let the subconscious take over.
ZEN DOODLES
You can also experience this in movement. After you totally relax, allow your body to move. Watch it and feel it, but don’t anticipate the next move.
Clearing your mind can let remarkable things happen. The results are meditative and relaxing.
Try it—draw, write, move, dance, or make music in a relaxed, playful state and be surprised at what happens. Create with joy.
Billards Club
The SunRiver Billiards Group recently held the second of two experimental 9-Ball Ladder Tournaments to help determine the feasibility of having a two-day, 9-Ball tournament after our eightweek 8-Ball tournaments that are held throughout the year.
Meditation
The most recent 9-Ball tournament test was a success, with eight members playing a double elimination session. It has been decided that the group will conduct the 9-Ball tournament as soon as the current 8-Ball tournament is completed on the first of September.
In one of our meditation meetings, we practiced what is popularly called Zen Doodles or Zen Tangles. It involves drawing or doodling without a plan and just getting lost in the process. It is also called automatism - art making in which the artist suppresses conscious control over the making process, allowing the subconscious mind to take over.
Music is another way to experience automatism. Play each note or phrase as it comes. Leave yourself open to what comes next.
If you are interested in participating in either or both tournaments in the future, contact Jim Bartell or enter your name, phone number, and email address on the sign-up sheet located in the Billiards Room.

At our Pegs and Jokers Club, we did something new: a double-elimination tournament. What fun! On Thursday, July 14th, those who signed up played their first round. Pegs and Jokers is a delightful combination of skill and the luck of the cards. On Sunday, July 21st, finals were played with the following results: Congratulations to these crafty players, and thanks to all who participated. After such fun and success, we will have a tournament each quarter in the future.

When I look out my office window, I see four ginormous spikes sticking straight up. Initially, they looked a bit like very healthy, extremely large asparagus spears (they are a species in the asparagus family). Now they have bloomed with thousands of clusters of flowers along this huge spike.

Gardening Club Spikes, Spoons, and Speculation
Being even more curious about this plant and the ‘out of this world’ look it gives to the landscape, I did some research: Desert Spoon Dasylirion wheeleri Also known as sotol or desert candle, the desert spoon gets its name from the spoon-like depression at its leaf base. This perennial evergreen shrub produces thousands of tiny greenish-white flowers in a cluster on a long, narrow spike that grows from a dense bunch of many slender, spiny leaves. It blooms May through July but not every year. The plant’s form is similar to agave, but it does not die after flowering and continues with its life cycle. After talking with Ryan White, manager of the Red Hills Desert Garden, he speculated that after the freeze of 2013, many plants were replaced with Desert Spoons, especially along the Parkway. What we see now are mature plants flowering in unison. Whatever the reason, it is an phenomenonunusualbutnot out of this world!
I have three Desert Spoons in my front yard, and this year all of them have spikes. Actually, one even has two! The weird thing is, when I walked around the neighborhood, almost every Spoon had a spike as well as many agaves. This prompted me to take a drive down the Parkway, and Yikes! There are spikes everywhere! So, what is going on? I have lived here for ten years and have never witnessed this before. Did the drought kick the plants into survival mode? Is this a particularly fertile year? Does it have to do with climate change? Did someone sprinkle fertilizer on every one of them?

Dr. Bishop was raised in the Seattle area, received his MD degree at the Medical College of Wisconsin, then completed his residency in neurosurgery at the University of Utah and a spine fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic. Prior to joining Intermountain Healthcare, he practiced medicine in Montana and Washington State.
While recovery from traditional back surgery can be long and arduous, Dr. Bishop has chosen to focus on a minimally invasive philosophy and approach to back treatments, including surgery when needed. The less invasive the surgery, the less time it takes to recover.

Please watch for the announcement for these classes and seminars; they will fill up quickly.

The SunRiver Woodworking Club would like to welcome the Community to visit the Woodworking Shop. We would like to show you the many high-quality machines and equipment available to use once you have had a safety review and training. With the equipment, you have the ability to create your own works of art. For those that are beginners, we will be offering classes this fall and throughout the year. We also have Woodworking Club Monitors available Monday through Friday from 8am-Noon and 1-4pm during the year, with the exception of the summer months, to help you with your projects. We do recommend that beginners start with simpler projects until they learn the equipment.
As mentioned earlier, we will be offering more classes this fall, including a Cutting Board Class, another Beginning Wood Turning Class, and some advanced seminars on segmented turning, dizzy bowls, and others.
Come join us for the creative fun of making art pieces at the Woodworking Shop. For information, contact our President, Hugh McFaden, at hughmcf2@gmail.com.
We completed the first Beginning Wood Turning Class with ten students; each student made a 12” plate, a 6” bowl, and a 4” round, lidded box. A few did an extra credit project making an ice cream scoop (see the attached pictures).

El Nino and La Nina describe ocean temperature changes in the Pacific. An El Nino event produces much above-average ocean temperatures off the coast of Central America and Ecuador. A La Nina event produces substantially below normal ocean temperatures in the same region. The two can be considered opposite sides of the same coin. This year’s La Nina produced huge floods in Southeast Asia and Pakistan. It also produced drought conditions in California, Arizona, and Utah. One cannot understand weather patterns in the American Southwest without understanding the effects of El Nino and La Nina. On Tuesday, September 13th, Ron Smith will describe El Nino and La Nina conditions and how they affect Utah’s winter weather. Come and find out whether El Nino or La Nina offers an insight into the precipitation outlook for the winter of 2023. You must purchase tickets in advance to attend the Ballroom presentation on Tuesday, September 13th. Popcorn tickets cost $1.50, and sandwich tickets cost $5.50. Doors open at 5pm. The program begins at 5:30pm. The Zoom program on Thursday, September 15th, is free. It begins at 5pm. Go to the Calendar on our webpage and click on “Science Presentation” in the September 15th location. Okay, there you have it - rain or shine!

Ed Lorentz, a research meteorologist, began developing weather prediction models about 50 years ago. He developed a simple model to predict the development of a convection cell. These cells of rising hot air and descending cool air produce thunderstorms in the tropics in mid-latitude summers, and over mountains. Ed made an unexpected discovery. Just a small change in initial conditions, such as temperature and humidity, resulted in a radically different weather prediction. This is a classic example of chaos theory, where a small variance in initial conditions can produce profoundly unexpected outcomes. A butterfly flaps its wings in Brazil, and it produces a chain of events that forms a hurricane over Florida. This is a metaphor but an important concept in weather. Slight differences in temperature and humidity in one location can have profound effects in faraway locations.

For most, a general workout plan to stay in good health would require working out two to three times a week. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday or Tuesday and Thursday are popular schedules. Then alternate between the upper and lower body for a basic structure. If you would like to get more advanced, you can focus on muscle groups. During the week, a good rule to get you started is three sets with 10 to 12 repetitions of a particular exercise using a weight that you can move through a full range of motion with good form and posture.
The most important choice is the one that works for you and that you are comfortable with.

Class Highlight: Chair Fit is a great Class that is very basic and is not only fun but easy to follow. The Class is a great, chair-based, full-body workout. With getting stronger, you can progress to the Standing Strong class or the Tone and Balance Class, where you can continue to improve. Standing Strong is the same as Chair Fit, a full-body workout with cardio, endurance training, and strength training. The Tone and Balance class works more on balance, conditioning, and smallmuscle recruitment.

Everyone has their own reasons for exercising and being active. Exercise is structured movements designed to get a result based on one’s needs or desires, such as preparing for a marathon or sport or gaining strength. Being physically active is making and keeping the body moving and usually consists of yard work or chores. It is usually not structured.
It is not how much time we put into the exercise that counts, but what we put into the exercise or workout regimen. Having an idea of what we will do and why we will do it will help us get the most from our workout. Keep it safe.

First, what do you want from your workout? Knowing what you want to get from working out will help you pick and choose exercise routines that will help you get the muscles or skills you need to get your desired results. This will help you choose your training volume. Will you work out two or three days a week, or do you need five days? Knowing what you want to get out of your workout and your time spent exercising is important for building muscle, strength, or endurance, each requiring different training.
The second is how. How are you going to get the results you want? Even if it is just general fitness, ask yourself, “Is doing this workout routine going to get me the results I am looking for?” You have a few options. Classes, on your own or with a buddy. Usually, classes are already set on a program, and the instructor has already planned everything out. The only thing you need to do is show up. Now, if you want more control and don’t want a class, you can plan or have someone design a workout based on your needs and wants. You may need a gym, you may need a park, or you may only need your home. A buddy can help keep you motivated, help keep an eye on your form, give you cues for form and posture, or give you a little help when needed.

Pottery make objects decorate From fountains, statues, and urns to a whole host of invisible to those of us walking by on the sidewalk. favorite method is tile making. She was inspired by the wonderful Cut-Out Series by Henri Matisse and thought of a way to incorporate art tiles into a garden pillar. The many tiles are glued and then grouted onto a wood block. The rooftop is crafted from clay slabs that are assembled and fired in one piece to protect the exposed end of the wood. hours were spent creating this piece, but it is now happily planted!
