Toto takes on Tauranga It was the news that rocked fans throughout the Bay of Plenty and beyond – when rock legends Toto, Jefferson Starship and Dragon announced a tour was on the cards for New Zealand in summer 2019.

Kicking it all off, is a show in Tauranga on January 9 at Trustpower Baypark.

The Weekend Sun speaks to Toto keyboardist and songwriter Steve Porcaro, ahead of the anticipated gig.

Steve describes the ‘A Summer’s Day’ tour as something of a nostalgic run, but also as a new and exciting experience.

His insight into what has made Toto the band it is today is on page 29.

The RR Survival Guide for 2019 The year is drawing to a close and many of you will be reflecting on 2018 and wondering what lies in store for 2019.

Entertain your friends in style

Some of you will fondly recall your year, by looking back at all the wonderful selfies you took to record highlights of 2018.

Except about a few hundred souls, who unfortunately die each year while taking those selfies.

Worldwide at least a couple of hundred people each year have snapped their last post while taking pictures of themselves.

Either stepping back off the edge of cliffs, being hit by a passing bridge abutment while putting their head out of the train window, or being eaten by a variety of hungry, angry wild animals that were more interested in an easy lunch than receiving fame on social media.

And incredibly, at least one person died taking a selfie, while replicating a previous fatal selfie accident.

Tip for surviving 2019: Keep away from these things.

A special plea from our family is for you all to avoid using, or going anywhere near, butane canister cookers.

These things are time bombs and their failure rate worldwide is horrendous.

We found this out the hard way, some simple research after my wife was badly burnt when the butane canister exploded in a fireball on a beach a couple of weeks ago. The cooker was correctly set up and running quite normally until the sudden explosion, which resulted in first and second degree burns. We’ve since discovered these cheap, crap death machines are banned in many other countries and have an atrocious accident record.

Legionnaires’ disease is a common cause of pneumonia and is characterised by a dry cough. Gardeners can reduce their exposure to potting mix dust by wetting down the potting mix prior to working with it, wearing gloves and a face mask, and washing hands afterwards.

Symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease include high fever, chest pains and abdominal pain.

Smokeless

Another way to live longer and healthier is to stop smoking.

And the good news is that the Bay of Plenty leads the quit rate in NZ. Ministry of Health results shows Bay of Plenty is the top performer across the country with a 75 per cent successful quit smoking rate at four weeks.

(My wife contributed here, she stopped smoking as soon as we put out the fire in her hair).

Nash was married to Rose Eccles for two years. It is not known whether she also had freckles.

“I would love to keep her.” But he’s letting her go. He’s lawyer Bill Holland. She’s his legal secretary – a star performer.

“In this company we encourage good people to progress, hopefully within the office. “Because if they are good, then we want them to stay.”

So why is Bill cutting Bayley Brown adrift, setting her free, encouraging her to leave?

Why isn’t he spicing up her employment package, giving her a reason to want to stay?

“Because it’s not in Bayley’s best interests, she’s best to look at the big picture, where she wants to be in five years’ time.” Loyal, trusted, talented – but he thinks she should go.

And her calling, where she needs to be, is teaching.

“I’ve always wanted to be a teacher,” says Bayley.

“I was just unsure when and where.”

When is now and where is Waikato University next year for study. She’s giving away the high flying corporate life working for one of the city’s preeminent law practitioners for the classroom.

The temptation of journeying alongside some kids during the early years of their life proved too strong.

It’s about shaping wee minds – encouraging, inspiring and empowering.

And her boss isn’t one bit miffed – he’s delighted.

“Isn’t she someone we need teaching?” says the warm and charming law partner, TECT chair and

community champion. Bayley mentioned earlier this year that ultimately she would like to go teaching.

But it was bad timing because a couple of illnesses in the firm made her even more indispensable.

Bayley stayed loyal. But in August, at her annual review, she was still talking about teaching.

So Bill started helping her out the door.

“The logical thing was for her to leave Holland Beckett Law early next year because she would get the start of the university year.”

The story only gets more serendipitous. Because Bill encouraged the 21-year-old former Rotorua Girls’ High School student to apply for a Tauranga Tertiary Campus Charitable Trust ‘First-in-Family’ scholarship. “If you’re the first in your family to have a university education, then you can apply for this scholarship.” Bayley is one of seven brothers and sisters. “I’m right in the middle and the first to go to uni. It’s not they couldn’t have gone.

“But it wasn’t pushed that much.”

Bayley didn’t need pushing – she applied for a scholarship and got one. She’s one of the inaugural recipients. “It’s a changing of the cycle,” says Bill.

“It’s getting people into university education when they might not have done so. So I think it’s great.”

And Bayley has the opportunity to stay in Tauranga to study. “Having Waikato University here in town is fantastic for people like Bayley,” says Bill.

Mining project is a go

Further mine development in Waihi has been given the green light following the Project Martha hearings.

OceanaGold NZ lodged resource consent applications in June with the Hauraki District and Waikato Regional councils for its proposed Project Martha.

The project includes work to stabilise the north wall of the open Martha Pit and to re-instate the pit haul road to allow access to the bottom of the pit for mining. Appeals to the consents close on February 1, 2019.

School bus confusion

Bayhopper has gotten the school bus route contract for 2019, and with that comes changes to some of the school bus routes.

One parent is worried about the rumours that she’ll be putting her primary-aged child on a public bus.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s passenger transport programme leader Rachel Pinn says school students are able to travel across the Bayhopper network, both on the public bus network and dedicated school buses.

“The public bus network travels past many schools and provides transport to multiple destinations – perfect for after school sports, jobs etc.”

Pillion passenger dies

Police are investigating the cause of a crash where a woman sufffered a fatal head injury in Bethlehem.

Police were called to the crash in Bethlehem Town Centre just before 6pm on December 17.

Two motorbikes were riding through the town centre’s shopping precinct, one with a pillion passenger on board, says a Police spokesperson.

“The pillion passenger, a woman in her 30s, has come off the back of one of the bikes and has suffered a fatal head injury.

“The other riders suffered moderate injuries and have been taken to hospital.”

Beach access

The bright blue beach access mat is back at Mount Maunganui Main Beach for everyone to enjoy.

The portable, rollout mat creates a sturdy and visible path to the beach for people who generally cannot get onto the beach or move across the sand, like those using wheelchairs, mobility scooters or strollers.

The mat is in place at the walkway next to the cenotaph on Marine Parade opposite Pacific Ave/Mount Drury. It’s intended to be available throughout the summer period.

Choosing the right contraceptive Contraception options are her choice, but not at the expense of being ill informed.

Two Tauranga women have expressed their concerns over the lack of information they’ve been given about their options of contraception.

Cayla Euinton, 25, says she originally asked to be put on a combined oral contraceptive pill several years ago, as a way to control her menstrual cycle while travelling overseas.

“Before I was on any form of contraceptive, when on my period I would have a shower and be fine,” she says.

“Then I’d get out of the shower and have to lay on the floor for an hour, because it was that painful.

“When I was travelling I really didn’t want to have to deal with that.”

Cayla says her doctor put her on Ava 20, which worked well while she was on her

travels, but when she got back she started having issues with spotting.

“When I went back, the doctor was frustrating and just put me on Ava 30 and told me to wait it out, which wasn’t helpful. So I just stopped taking it, because at the time I wasn’t sexually active, so it didn’t matter.”

She later went back on Ava 30, prescribed by a different doctor, but wasn’t given any information about her prescription or about other options of contraceptives.

Cayla says it was just assumed that she had all the information, because she’d already taken it previously.

“I went to a religious school, so contraceptives were never talked about.

“I thought there was only one type of pill.

“For example, nobody told me you can’t have grapefruit while you’re on it, or whether you have to make sure you take it around the same time every day.

“No-one explained what would happen if you skip one.”

Family Planning national medical advisor Rose Stewart says the issue with GPs is that local practices don’t necessarily have someone who specialises in women’s health.

“I don’t want to cast any assumptions on general practice, because they’re really great, but they can be really busy and have shorter appointments,” says Rose.

“Practitioners only have two minutes to give you the information you need.”

Rose says in some cases, too much information can be confusing, which is often why practitioners resort to more written information, such as pamphlets and websites.

“When people come in, sometimes they can take in a lot of information, but other times they can’t or don’t want to for all sorts of reasons.”

Rose says everyone is different, so it is a nurse’s job to assess what will work best for the patient.

“We judge how much information to give them by their responses,” says Rose.

“I went to a religious school, so contraceptives were never talked about.

I thought there was only one type of pill.

“If people ask lots of questions, then you know that they are understanding and they want more information, but if they’re not asking a lot of questions, you give them the minimum amount of information and give them written information that is simple.”

Sam Gardner, 25, has also had similar issues to Cayla. She was started on the pill, but later changed to the Depo Provera injection after she found the pill wasn’t working for her.

“I used to get three periods a month, and I thought the pill wasn’t right for my body. But it turns out I had never been told how to take it properly. One of my friends recommended the Depo injection.

“All I knew about it was that it stopped your period and was a pretty strong form of contraceptive.”

To begin with, the injection was effective, but over time she started suffering from constant pains.

“I was on it for four years, and then went off it because it was making me really sick,” says Sam. “I was getting really bad pains without any period.”

While continuing that form of contraception, she also heard that if you’re on the injection for too long it can cause infertility.

Rose says Depo injects progestogen into your body, which is similar to one of the hormones produced naturally by a woman’s ovaries. It prevents pregnancy by stopping the ovaries releasing an egg each month, as well as changing the lining of the womb.

“This also means your natural fertility can take some time to return to normal after stopping the injections,” says Rose. “On average, this will be six months but can take up to two years.”

The choice of contraceptive is completely up to the woman, however in some cases the woman will not be advised to choose another option if it will affect her health.

Family Planning national medical advisor Rose Stewart says an Intra Uterine Device is a great option for women who are sensitive to other forms of contraceptives.

“Sometimes there are medical reasons why people can’t use something, and that relates more to the pill than anything else.

“For example, if someone has certain types of migraines, it’s really unwise to be on the pill because it could cause a stroke.”

Rose says it’s important for practitioners to take a medical history and to inform people of the different methods and potential side effects, if any.

“If you’re taking any medicine you’re entitled to have full information about it, and the good thing now is that information is available online for everyone.

“Contraceptive is very objective. We can’t say what will happen, but we can say if you’re feeling different and you’re not really happy with it, you need to come back and tell us about it.”

Pet owners’ guide to summer Most dog owners believe their pooch is the best, and none of them are wrong.

But while you may love your fourlegged friend, the unfortunate reality is that regardless of how lovely-natured and well-behaved your dog is, they might not be everyone’s cup of tea.

This is why a number of dog control measures are in place in Tauranga and the surrounding Western Bay of Plenty areas.

With the warmer weather approaching, council is reminding dog owners and visitors to the region about rules and regulations for responsible dog owners.

Tauranga City Council animal services team leader Brent Lincoln says Tauranga currently has more than 13,000 registered dogs.

“As the city and dog numbers continue to grow, we all need to be mindful of how we share our common spaces like parks, reserves and beaches,” says Brent.

“Dog owners are able to exercise their dogs off leash in many of these areas, however, responsible dog ownership is the key to creating a safer environment for everyone.

“All dog owners must carry a leash when exercising their dog.

“If a dog is likely to cause danger, distress or nuisance to anyone or any other animal, it must be kept on a leash.

“We encourage all owners to put their dog on a leash as they approach other people or animals.

“Dog owners must also avoid our dog-prohibited areas.

“These restrictions are in place because of ecological sensitivities or because the area is used intensively by the public.

“Please remember to always take a plastic bag and pick up after your dog.”

Currently, dogs are not allowed on Mount Maunganui Main Beach, from Moturiki Island to Mauao, Pilot Bay from Mauao to Salisbury Avenue, Omanu Beach within 200m from the Omanu Surf Club premises, and Papamoa Beach within 200m from the Papamoa Surf Club premises.

This means dogs are not allowed on dunes, grass or boardwalks at Mount Maunganui Main Beach or the grassed area between the road and beach at Pilot Bay. Dogs are also not permitted in the Elms Reserve, Mauao (including the base track), Moturiki Island, McLaren Falls

Park, Papamoa Hills Park or the Otumoetai Pa Historic Reserve.

In the Western Bay of Plenty District Council area, dogs are not allowed at Waihi Beach, except at the year-round dog zone between Albacore Ave and Plom Rod. Dogs can be taken on a leash at Island View Reserve until March.

Also, dogs aren’t allowed at the sandbars off Cooney Reserve or Omokoroa Domain Foreshore until Easter Monday.

And dogs are prohibited from around the Maketu Surf Lifesaving Club and the historic reserve until February 7.

Staying cool on the road makes sense The big downside of taking the family on a summer holiday is usually the drive to get to the beach, bach or lake.

So any tips to make the whole process a bit smoother have to be welcome.

Some of the best recent advice from Police is perhaps a little left-field, but makes a lot of sense in terms of safe holiday driving on our jam-packed summer roads.

Turn up the music, and chill out.

It’s going to take you longer to get where you’re going, they say, so accept it, take plenty of breaks, plenty of bottled water to keep the family hydrated, and don’t make promises about your arrival time because that just adds to the pressure.

Taking frequent breaks is a no-brainer, but

hydration? Many of us probably wouldn’t think of it, but vehicle air-conditioning – which, let’s face it, we keep on all the time – dries us out pretty quickly.

Dehydration is one of the primary causes of angst and irritation in us humans.

The key to staying cool and under control is relaxation, so that’s the reason for making no commitments about your estimated time of arrival – it’s bound to increase your anxiety levels, especially if you’re the driver. It’s also the reason it’s a good idea to keep some music playing in the car – just so long as it’s at a reasonable level.

Remember, Police are looking out for slow drivers as well as fast ones, so pull over and let the traffic past if a long queue is building up behind you.

Stay cool, and have a safe and happy holiday motoring season.

Reflecting on a big year in the Bay It’s been a very busy year for the Government and we have achieved a lot – the families package, increased Working for Families payments, extension to paid parental leave, the first Kiwibuild homes built and sold, the winter energy payment, making GP visits cheaper for 600,000 Kiwis, the Pike River Recovery Programme, free fees for first-year tertiary students, the list goes on.

I’ve received ‘thank you’ cards from pensioners saying that because of the Winter Energy Payment they’ve been able to heat their home throughout winter – and for

the first time in years they haven’t had to worry about their power bills. A woman wrote recently saying ‘thank you’ for the increase in support for families, which meant she was able to buy her daughter sanitary products and she didn’t miss school due to not having these essential items.

Locally, it has also been a busy year too. I’ve visited many organisations and met with hundreds of people – that’s the best part of the job, connecting with the people and hearing their stories. So I’d like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to the community for welcoming me

as a new MP. Thank you also to those organisations that asked me to speak at their meetings.

And thank you to the people who supported the ‘Knit for Jacinda’ campaign locally by donating beautifully knitted items, which we gifted to The Salvation Army; and thanks to those who donated items for our homeless, and books for the children of the Solomon Islands.

I hope you all have a wonderful festive season and all the best for 2019.

Sharing the joys of an RV More Bay of Plenty RV owners are getting on the bandwagon of sharing use of their RVs.

If you aren’t using your motorhome to its full extent, allowing tourists to experience New Zealand on the road could be your best bet.

Many Bay of Plenty RV owners are now listing their privately-owned motorhomes on a RV sharing site called Mighway, which embraces the sharing economy and the opportunity to create income from assets when not in use.

Due to the vehicles being privately owned, there is great variety on the platform – from retro campers and ultimate surf wagons through to top-of the-range luxury vehicles.

Motorhomes are located throughout the country, wherever their owners might be, with many available for pick up throughout the Bay of Plenty region.

Mighway marketing director Jason Nockels says

supporting regional travel is a key focus for the Mighway team, and local knowledge from users creates a richer experience for travellers.

“These regional pickups encourage travellers to really explore the country, rather than just the main centres,” says Jason.

“We think this is a huge opportunity for Mighway to contribute to local economies.

“The more listings in the Bay of Plenty region, the more visitors pick up from there, with the opportunity for local owners to make their recommendations about places to visit and experiences to enjoy.”

Tauranga motorhome owners Ken and Valda Tyler have rented their motorhome many times through Mighway and say it is a win-win.

“The extra cash is always handy,” they say, “but we enjoy meeting the travellers the most”.

With $10,000 up for grabs, entries are flooding in for the Trustpower Photographic Competition, now in its third year.

The exhibition calls for entries to the theme of ‘Finding Beauty’ and Mainstreet Tauranga spokesperson Sally Cooke says the theme is attracting some amazing and diverse entries.

“We’re asking photographers, from amateur to professional, to find and capture moments of beauty.

“They may find them in the most unexpected places and moments, and the moment they capture might just be the one that wins them a place in the Trustpower Photographic Exhibition.”

Sally says with the lure of the $10,000 in cash prizes and entries open across New Zealand, they are expecting to top last year’s record number of entries.

“With entries closing on January 10, there’s still

time for people to find some amazing photos to submit.” The exhibition is believed to be New Zealand’s largest outdoor photographic exhibition when it opens on The Strand walkway on January 25. “Every year we get so much amazing feedback.

“People just love it. It lights up The Strand and the city centre, and becomes a tourist and visitor attraction for the city centre.

“It is a privilege for us to host it in Tauranga, and this time we look forward to some amazing photographs from around the world, to inspire and delight those who see it.”

Taking some downtime during the holidays I have to admit to eating too much Christmas food. It’s so hard to resist the tempting offerings at the Bridges’ gatherings. I’ve also washed a lot of dishes and cooked up a storm on the barbecue. They are my main contributions to the domestic duties at this time of year. I come from a big family and I also have three children of my own, so we are all used to a packed table and lots of hands to help prepare and clean up.

season too. My family will probably laugh when I say that because I’m still working on ideas and plans for the National Party. I’ve had the chance to go through some of the answers we are receiving from our ‘Have Your Say’ campaigns.

This year we launched four campaigns focused on small businesses, the rural community, seniors, and families. We’re now asking for your feedback on what really matters to you. The questionnaires are straightforward and each one only takes a few

Yes, crewing could be your go Ever sat snarled up in the drive-home traffic on the Tauranga Harbour Bridge and glanced down with a degree of envy at the crews on the race yachts with their colourful billowing sails and bubbling bow-waves out on the water?

Looks cool, but not something you could hope to get into, right?

Well actually, not so much.

Certainly owning one of those boats is not something everyone can aspire to, but getting out there and enjoying the experience of sailing as a crew member on one of them – well, why not?

Unless it’s a short-handed race, they all need plenty of crew. And that’s where you might well fit right in Some of the skippers of those yachts you’ve seen out there charging around the buoys are pretty serious about the game, and don’t really want to know about you if you don’t have experience.

And some have a wide enough circle of mates that they never find themselves short of willing hands to pull on a few sheets and halyards, and throw themselves around the deck as human ballast.

But others are not quite so fervent about the whole thing, and are often on the lookout for good keen types who enjoy a bit of social contact and can follow a few simple instructions.

Their most popular events are the Summer Series races on Wednesday nights – these are the fleets you’ve probably seen on your crawl home from work.

The club also stages slightly less competitive twohanded racing, and a Rum Race, on Friday nights in summer months.Then there is weekend racing as well.

These events are often longer and can take fleets out to nearby islands off the Bay of Plenty coast, such as Motiti and Mayor islands.

Mount Maunganui Yacht Club is less active in the racing area, but are focusing on adventure events through the summer months and can often be looking for crew for their participating boats as well.

Both clubs have active and informative websites, and you can contact them through those and also register your details on their ‘crew wanted’ pages.

Once you’ve given it a try, you may well get serious, and decide you want to learn to sail more formally.

TYPBC offers courses for kids, of course, but it may not be so well-known that you can also join up and do a course if you’re an adult and never set foot on a wind-powered craft in your life.

The instructors have helped plenty of people like you, so there’s no need to worry about being judged.

Then it could be you out there enjoying the thrill of sailing while others are looking on with envy, stuck in their cars on the harbour bridge.

Safe sleep for babies these holidays As the holiday season approaches, families are more likely to be on the move.

And it’s vitally important that those with babies always have a safe place for baby to sleep.

Relying on a makeshift bed while on holiday poses risk of suffocation for babies in the first year of life, so planning ahead to always have a safe sleep environment will help protect babies from suffocation.

To keep babies safe during sleep, always follow these simple rules: Place baby safely in his or her own bed; if co-sleeping place baby in a wahakura (flax woven bassinet), a P˜pi-pod or bassinette, keep baby’s face clear of loose bedding and items such as pillows, hats, bibs or soft toys.

car. The whanau can also support mum by being smokefree.

Always position baby flat and on the back, as this enables an open airway and baby’s drive to breathe is best this way.

For Natasha Cunningham, having a wahakura for her baby son Keanu has made things so easy, especially as he was born four weeks early.

“He needed to be fed more often and needed closer monitoring once we got home from hospital. The wahakura allowed Keanu to sleep safely in the lounge during the day, and I had it in bed with me at night so he was close to me, which really helped with bonding and breastfeeding.”

Natasha’s mum lives in Te Poi, so when she visits she takes Keanu’s wahakura so he can safely sleep in a familiar space.

Researching potential uses for ‘the scourge of Tauranga’ It’s unsightly, smelly and the scourge of Tauranga Harbour during the summer months.

And while it’s deemed a pest, sea lettuce may also hold the key to a new and valuable industry in the Bay of Plenty thanks to a $13 million algal biotechnology research project, funded by the Government and the University of Waikato.

Leading the research programme is seaweed biologist Dr Marie Magnusson, who recently joined the University of Waikato’s Tauranga-based Coastal Marine Field Station.

Guided by the chair of coastal science, Professor Chris Battershill, the research will investigate ways to use algae and extracts for human food, animal feed supplements and nutraceutical uses.

Marie is joined by seaweed chemist and husband Dr Chris Glasson, and together they aim to establish a world-class team of researchers to explore commercial applications of seaweed and develop new market opportunities for New Zealand’s aquaculture industry.

“Macro-algae represents a largely untapped resource for materials and bio products that will enable sustainable diversification of NZ’s aquaculture industry, while leading to development of new ventures based on high value bioproducts, contributing to regional development,” says Marie, who previously headed the Centre for Macroalgal Resources and Biotechnology at James Cook University in Australia.

Seaweed is already a huge multi-billion dollar industry in Asia – especially red and brown seaweed – however, the potential of green seaweed is yet to be maximised, she says.

“It has an immense range of applications, from watering your garden with seaweed extract, to eating it, to promoting general health and wellbeing in both humans and a range of animal production systems.

“The research team is looking at several seaweed species, starting off with sea lettuce due to its abundance within the Bay of Plenty region.” Sea lettuce (ulva) is a type of macro-algae (large multicellular algae) which frequently blooms in large quantities in Tauranga Harbour.

Chris, also from James Cook University, says they have previously done a lot of work with species of ulva in Australia.

“Ulva has interesting properties in terms of chemistry and bioactivity.

“It mimics a lot of activities of sulphated polysaccharides we have in our own system, and it can enhance the immune system to fight off infections and different diseases.

“It can also enhance the immune system of plants against plant diseases.

“So the range of applications for green seaweed is large, meaning this scourge might actually be an asset in disguise.”

I want you to stand for council The Christmas break is an excellent opportunity to gather your thoughts and set goals for the year ahead. Have you considered standing for council?

There’s an election next year.

There are two types of councillor.

The city is divided into three wards – Mount/Papamoa, Te Papa/ Welcome Bay and Otumoetai/Pyes Pa – with two councillors elected by each ward to represent those communities on council.

There are four more councillors elected ‘at-large’ across the entire city.

Both ward and ‘at-large’ councillors swear an oath to act in the best

interests of the whole city, regardless of how they’re elected.

Both types of councillor should work full-time on council.

You’re paid a full-time wage and the community expects you to work as such. Ward councillors, in general, tend to get more requests from residents as they identify with a specific community.

Kane Williamson is setting a high bar.

How high can Kane Williamson take his astonishing batting tallies?

Already, the maestro batsman, who grew up and learnt his craft in the cricketing nurseries of Tauranga’s Pillans Point School, Otumoetai Intermediate and Tauranga Boys’ College, is the fourth-highest total run-scorer ever for New Zealand in all three forms of international cricket, with more than 12,300 runs.

The eye-catching thing, though, is the three icons he is only around 3000 runs behind, and fast catching up to. Ross Taylor, Stephen Fleming and Brendon McCullum took more than 400 innings to reach their totals, but Kane has needed under 300.

As hard as it is to believe the 28-year-old has been around the international scene for eight years now.

What’s equally astonishing is that he’s reached such lofty statistical heights in a relatively short time.

Assuming he keeps playing until the age of 35 – and he could well stick around a good deal longer than that – at his current average rate of 1540 runs per year in all formats, he could add another 11,000 to his tally, taking him to more than 23,000.

In test matches he scores hundreds at a rate of 2.4 per year, so he could add another 17 in the next seven years, taking him to an unbelievable 36.

When you add in the other two formats he has a total of 30 centuries, so at a rate of 3.75 per year another 26 could be coming his way during the next seven years, taking him to a tally of 56.

And there’s every chance he could improve his success rate and take those figures beyond that as the years roll on and his skills improve further.

It would be foolish to say we’re never going to produce another Kane Williamson, but he certainly is setting a high bar for any challenging successor to reach.

Looking back on the 2018 rugby year The 2018 rugby season had plenty of highs and lows from a Bay of Plenty perspective, with the continued increase in women playing the game a highlight.

It seems with every deft flick pass and scorching outside break by Michaela Blyde and Portia Woodman, more and more teenage girls are moving from other sports to try their luck at sevens or fifteens.

The extraordinary sight of women’s players and teams cleaning up at the NZ Rugby Awards would have been unthinkable a decade ago.

In this year’s Baywide women’s club final, Rangataua Sports edged Rangiuru Sports in a 22-21 thriller with plenty of the high performing BOP Volcanix on show. The Volcanix performed well in the Farah Palmer Cup Premiership after successfully winning the 2017 Championship final. A highlight was defeating Auckland Storm 34-29 at Eden Park for the first time. But the Steamers were hugely disappointing.

After coming so close to beating Wellington in the 2017 promotion final, expectations were high that they could go all the way to the premiership.

But four wins from 10 games was a poor return that saw them miss the semifinals – the bottom line achievement for a union with Bay of Plenty’s playing talent. Sure, injuries tested the squad’s depth more than coaches feared but an inability to score tries throughout the campaign was the biggest handicap.

The positive was the blooding of several academy players, who now have experience at a higher level.

There was no shortage of attacking ability from the champion BOP under-19 team that won the Graham Mourie Cup at the Jock Hobbs Memorial National Under 19 Tournament in Taupo. The thrilling 35-30 victory over Canterbury was a turning point for the team that had never made a final before.

The DJ Graham Player of the Tournament was awarded to BOP fullback Kaleb Trask.

Trask hugely proved influential in the final with a 20-point haul leading his team to victory.

The NZ Under 20 rep later made his Mitre 10 Cup debut for the Steamers and looked assured at that level. Earlier in the season, the Farmlands Co-operative Baywide club competitions produced plenty of memorable moments and games to remember.

The rise and rise of Te Puna, which will celebrate 100 years in 2019, was great to see.

They made their intentions clear during last summer by cleaning up the club sevens titles and going through the Baywide first round unbeaten. The inevitable end to that run came, but it did not stop Te Puna making it all the way to their first premiership final where they faced home side Te Puke Sports. In the end the passionate Te Puke pirates were too good on the day and richly deserved to win their third Baywide title.

They also took out the Development title while next door neighbours Rangiuru won the Premier 2 title.

There is plenty to look forward to for BOP rugby fans in 2019 – more wins please Steamers!

Keep yourself safe online Going into 2019 it’s important to be aware of the email and internet scams making their way around. In the first half of 2018 an estimated $18 million in losses were reported to New Zealand internet safety site Netsafe.

While all scams are different, many share similar tell-tale signs. One of the best ways to protect yourself online is to know what to look out for.

Being contacted out of the blue, even if the person says they’re from a legitimate source – such as your bank or internet provider – is one way to sniff out a potential scam, as is being told there is a problem with your phone, computer, iPad or internet connections. This will often be followed by an offer to have your device fixed by the person contacting you.

Another tell-tale sign of scams is being directed to another, unauthorised website to make payments.

Don’t make payments online if you are taken away

from the normal website. Being asked to pay with unusual payment methods is another way scammers try to get around legitimate processes. Asking for preloaded debit cards such as Prezzy cards, iTunes cards, bitcoins, gift vouchers and money transfer systems are a tactic scammers use to remain untraceable.

Scammers will often tell people a small payment must be made in order to receive money, information or other things. This can sometimes be labelled as a ‘processing fee’ or something similar and is a common tactic used.

Never give out any passwords to your online accounts; legitimate organisations will never ask for this information.

Doing your research and protecting your information are the best ways to stay safe from online scammers.

Searching for terms such as ‘problem with my computer scam’ can help you stay aware of current scams making the rounds, or check: www.netsafe. co.nz regularly to stay on top of scam information.

Melanomas that look like pimples An Australian melanoma expert says New Zealanders and their doctors need to be more aware that some of the most aggressive and deadly melanomas look like persistent pimples or blood blisters.

In Victoria, during a 20-year period, these aggressive melanomas accounted for nearly half of all skin cancer-related deaths, but only 13.5 per cent of melanomas.

Professor John Kelly, from the Victorian Melanoma Service at Alfred Hospital, told the fifth

national Melanoma Summit in Auckland that nodular melanomas are often overlooked, because they don’t look like what we’ve been taught to look for when checking our skin.

He says both patients and doctors are quite good at finding the more typical flat, unevenly coloured melanomas with irregular and changing shape and colour.

“But nodular melanomas look quite different,” says John.

“They are small, red, firm to the touch and regular in shape, usually on the head and neck.

“To begin with, they’re not obviously a cancer.

“But they’re growing in depth

from the get go, whereas ordinary inflammatory nodules will come and go in a month.”

A recent New Zealand study interviewed 249 people who had a recent diagnosis of nodular melanoma.

Some 25 per cent reported it took six months or more for their nodular melanoma to be diagnosed from the time they first thought something was wrong with their lesion.

In total, 61 of those surveyed reported their lesion was red in colour. Other presenting symptoms of nodular melanoma included bleeding or crusting, itching, pain or inflammation

New medicine offers hope for Kiwis living with rare blood disorder New Zealanders living with a rare blood disorder that can cause spontaneous, fatal internal bleeding and excruciating arthritislike symptoms are set to benefit from the Medsafe registration of a new medicine.

Haemophilia A is an inherited blood disorder caused by lack of a clotting protein called factor VIII. It affects eight in every 100,000 Kiwis, with males most likely to be diagnosed with the condition.

The approval of the medicine is the first new treatment for those living with this disease, who show an immunological rejection of factor VIII, to be made

available in NZ in the last 20 years.

Otago University’s senior lecturer and consultant haematologist Dr Mark Smith says there are around 800 Kiwis living with haemophilia and around 365 have a severe form of the condition called Haemophilia A, which puts them at extreme risk of spontaneous internal bleeding.

“The bleeding will often pool around the joints, which can cause significant levels of pain – in the past this was often treated with morphine which severely impacted the ability to function and led to time off work or school,” says Mark.

People with haemophilia A are usually treated with factor VIII medicines, which replace the missing factor VIII and help control and prevent bleeding.

However, the body may develop antibodies as a reaction to these medicines in around 25-30 per cent of the cases.

The inhibitors reduce the medicines’ effect, so bleeding is no longer controlled.

The new medicine, Hemlibra (emicizumab), which gained priority registration from Medsafe, works by mimicking the functions of activated factor VIII and can prevent or reduce the frequency of bleeding episodes in adults and children with haemophilia A with factor VIII inhibitors.

Treatment is given weekly via a subcutaneous injection, which means it can be injected under the skin without the inconvenience of needing to locate a vein. Read the rest of this story at www.theweekendsun.co.nz

Quitting the smokes for good She’s been smoking on and off for the last year – but this time she’s staying smoke-free.

Gate Pa resident Megan Ballam has gone seven weeks without smoking since she asked for help from Candy Blackwell from the stop smoking service Hapainga.

“I’ve always wanted to be smokefree,” says Megan. “But I’ve been on and off smoking for the last year by myself.”

Megan says she made a goal to stop smoking before her ankle fusion operation in November, but the date was moved forward to October, so instead she quit smoking during her recovery process.

“I used patches for two weeks and then I got really sick after my operation, and I wasn’t allowed to walk and I didn’t have the energy to get a patch, so that week I completely stopped and I haven’t used any since.”

Megan Ballam stopped smoking eight weeks ago.

Megan says Candy has been very supportive during the whole process and has helped her keep on track.

“Having someone there who could support me was so important because my son, who lives at home, smokes and one of my good friends smokes, so she was the only non-smoker I had around me.”

Megan’s biggest advice for anyone who is trying to quit smoking and struggling is not to be so hard on yourself.

“Don’t worry if you don’t succeed the first time, because I’ve been trying to do this all year by myself – there will be a stage where you will succeed.

“Even if you only manage to cut down, cutting down is a big step.”

New healthcare guidelines for transgender people Health professionals and transgender advocates from around the nation have created a new set of guidelines for transgender people.

The guidelines, titled ‘Gender Affirming Healthcare for Gender Diverse and Transgender Children, Young People and Adults in Aotearoa New Zealand’ have been outlined in an article in ‘The New Zealand Medical Journal’.

Lead author Dr Jeannie Oliphant has brought together a team from a wide range of disciplines, including Dr Jaimie Veale a senior lecturer in psychology at the University of Waikato, who is working on a comprehensive survey of transgender and non-binary people’s health needs.

The guidelines provide an approach to healthcare delivery unique to Aotearoa/New Zealand, by utilising Maori models of health that recognise the importance of holistic care while also referencing international standards.

Jaimie says the new guidelines promote healthcare based on informed consent.

“This means that healthcare providers’ duty of care is to make sure people seeking gender affirming care are empowered with all of the information they need to make the best decisions for themselves,” says Jaimie.

The authors want district health boards to take note of the recommendations in the guidelines.

Jeannnie says services for trans-people are not consistent around New Zealand.

“Access to puberty blockers, hormonal therapy and various surgeries vary greatly in different regions. There is an urgent need for each DHB to develop a clear pathway for provision of gender affirming healthcare locally.”

Jeannie hopes there will be wide uptake from healthcare providers throughout the country.

“These guidelines have been endorsed by the Australian and NZ Professional Association for Transgender Health, the NZ Sexual Health Society and the NZ Society of Endocrinology;

and the Ministry of Health links to them on their page for healthcare for transgender New Zealanders.”

The guidelines cover areas including supporting families, mental healthcare, access to puberty blocking treatments, hormone therapy, and surgery, as well as fertility preservation.

“Your target is to get at least close to what an agent would get for your house. You pay commission to an agent for them to get the best price and that extra value is what they will tell you pays your commission for you, along with less hassle on the DIY front.”

However, with complete power comes complete responsibility, says Kevin. And he warns to ensure your expectations of price and ease of sale are aligned with market conditions. “These are things that real estate agents think about day in and day out.”

Save yourself a costly property investment in 2019 Looking to enter the rental property market in the New Year? While it can be an exciting time, it can also prove costly if the right steps aren’t taken.

Importantly, an incorrect ownership structure can result in you paying unnecessary tax.

This can arise when you own a family home and wish to buy an investment property or, alternatively, buy a new home and rent out the existing home.

How? Any interest charge on lending taken out for the purposes of financing an incomeearning asset – for example, an

investment property – is a taxdeductible expense.

If the money is borrowed to buy a home for you to live in, the interest is not deductible.

Therefore, if you wish to buy an investment property, it makes sense to have as much lending against the investment property as possible rather than against the family home.

This needs to be achieved before settlement date.

It also pays to keep in mind the five-year bright line rule,

where you’ll pay tax when you buy and sell a residential property within five years, unless an exception applies.

And be aware of the Inland Revenue Department’s proposed ‘ring-fencing’ law change, which the Government is currently considering. IRD hopes to prevent investors from being able to offset losses from investment property against their personal incomes. If approved, the law change may take effect in the 2019/2020 tax year.

Start 2019 on the right foot by seeking sound legal advice before you commit to an investment property with unforeseen consequences.

What to ask when you’re asking for a home loan

“If you’ve got your deposit tucked away and you’re seriously looking for somewhere to buy, it’s a good idea to start shopping for a mortgage before you need one,” says Real Estate Authority chief executive Kevin Lampen-Smith.

“The home-buying process can move fast, and it makes things much easier if you’ve already got a lender on side. This is known as ‘pre-approval’ and it can take a lot of the uncertainty out of knowing what you can afford,” says Kevin.

First up, a lender will want to know how much deposit you have. Most lenders expect first-home buyers to have at least 20 per cent of the amount they want to borrow.

With the average New Zealand house price now at $550,000 that means you’ll need to show that you’ve saved $110,000 if you want to buy a property at that price. They’ll also ask you how much you earn and how much you spend, along with details about any other debts or loans you might have.

“While the bank or financial institution needs to make sure you’re a safe risk, there are two sides to this relationship,” says Kevin. “It’s important that you feel confident about what you’re signing up to before you commit.”

Kevin says your first question – after how much they will let you borrow, and what the interest rate will be – should be about fees: what will you have to pay for taking out this mortgage?

For example, will you have to pay a low equity fee if you have less than a 20 per cent deposit? Will there be any penalties if you pay off a chunk of the mortgage early? Can they waive your normal account fees if you take out a mortgage?

Sometimes a lender may want to loan you more than you’re comfortable paying out of your weekly income.

Western Bay of Plenty District Council bumbles on day-to-day, completely transfixed on things Maori following a resounding 80 per cent referendum rebuke on Maori wards.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council is even more adept at wasting money – contracting buses that don’t cater for the needs of Tauranga travellers, and a $30m funding initiative for orchard developments on Maori land lauded as an investment?

Flying under the radar BOPRC spends money most people haven’t a clue about, funded by rates and their cash-cow Port of Tauranga.

Can someone reveal anything these councils actually got right?

Here’s my Christmas time report card on New Zealand. Competition with Australia in sport is tough, so why do we give $5 billion-plus to Australia by supporting Aussie banks?

We have Labour unsure if they should spend on the poor, or the rich, as National has done since Adam was a boy.

Winston First has proved you can fool people all the time; and it costs the taxpayer about thousands a year per MP in Parliament. Meanwhile, a living wage would keep people independent and save the taxpayers money.

A country like NZ having to have foodbanks like Africa is a slur on all of us.

The big question is who is the biggest problem for the country – the needy or the greedy?

Humanity is lacking in both National and Labour. So I reckon Jacinda’s report card is not a pass.

Another illthought idea Re: ‘New buses don’t cut it’ (The Weekend Sun, December 14). My wife and I would like to express our complete agreement with the comments made

by J. Stone regarding the loss of the previous number 70 bus route from Matua to the CBD. It was convenient to travel via Brookfield to Cameron Rd, with stops near The Warehouse, Pak’nSave and others on the way to, and from, the depot in town.

Unlike your former correspondent, we both drive, so we’ll be using our car as the bus option is no longer available. It appears to be yet another ill-thought idea that seems to be so prevalent with the current powers that be.

The sooner consideration is given to reinstating the former 70 route for the many residents who do not, or cannot, drive, the better.

As 2018 draws to close, let’s examine what our councils in the Bay of Plenty have been up to this year.

Tauranga City Council managed to obliterate a perfectly-sound administration building then panicked, calling for ideas, while in the meantime floating a container village in direct competition with CBD businesses.

The CBD container village Our Place had already received $357,824.78 of ratepayer money – then recently TCC handed over another $60,000.

Then there’s the Bella Vista subdivision debacle, costing the council millions to settle with the homeowners.

Greerton, Welcome Bay and the bridge’s traffic is a shambles.

Mount Maunganui’s old Phoenix carpark is being transformed into a concrete jungle at a cost of millions, plus the council is very quiet about mega-million Southern Sewage Pipeline, demonstrating lack of transparency and accountability. TCC is a financial mess and that’s just the tip of the iceberg!

You can’t get rid of cars! Most exciting thing since Hairy arrived The subjects bothering many motorists are clogged roads, lack of parking at the destination, and both appear more prevalent?

There is no need for the level of congestion, delays, queues and inefficiencies imposed relentlessly on motorists who have little choice.

All harms the lives of many citizens and costs all businesses/households significantly every day, every year!

The crazy schemes created, recommended, implemented that only add to congestion, like traffic-lights not synchronised, bad timing and lengthy road works, are extraordinary!

The commercial additional costs are huge. There’s many examples.

Obviously those who get paid to ‘think’ can’t figure the real problem or worse; and if realised they ignore it. The thread linking all is Tauranga City Council and it’s desire to replace all cars with buses and bicycles – yesterday! Looks like a Tui advert to me, but onward they go!

It’s overdue for an adequate level of accountability from those creating a cascade of under-achieving, ineffective and costly failures.

We shouldn’t be surrendering our national identity at all For the past decade New Zealand has been governed by political parties, reluctant to inform the public on matters of national importance, making decisions in secret and without the knowledge and acceptance of the public. Politicians seem unapproachable.

Personal letters to individual Members of Parliament receive acknowledgement but no replies. The media has been complicit by not publishing these undemocratic unilateral political decisions they know exist but fail to report, preferring more sensational fare.

The present United Nations’ Global Contract that the

Government has been asked to sign would have horrendous and permanent consequences for the present and future generations, resulting in the loss of national control and national identity.

One needs only to review the voting members of the UN to realise their agenda. Western democracies beware!

It is the professional and moral responsibility of the media to see that the public is fully informed on the imminent threat and it is essential the Government informs the population and accepts their wishes.

Petitions on the matter are being circulated. Read them and decide.

I can hear the outcry from the suburbs already. Why are we, the ratepayers, bailing out Our Place? The usual chorus of naysayers, kill joys and cave dwellers.

The same squeaky wheels that killed the idea of the fifth biggest city in the country having a museum.

The same ones that will tell us we don’t need a multipurposes sports stadium, the same ones that refuse to pay another cent of rates towards growing this city, the same ones that refuse to leave any sort of civic legacy for their kids.

This week I took an international visitor to Our Place where we gorged on some of the best dumplings I’ve eaten and cleansed the palate with one of the finest IPAs available in town. One didn’t cut it so we had two, and a couple of Japanese skewers, and we listened to the chatter around, yakked with complete strangers, laughed, listened to some music, took in some sun and bought some memento jewellery. A great outing amongst the containers, the same kind that tower over our wharves and skyline, the same one’s that feed our economy.

There’s a delightful symmetry going on here. If I was on the city council I would be asking Our Place how much they need and I would give it to them. The most exciting thing to happen downtown since Bottomley Spots et al.

Double standards on travel to climate change event?

Climate Change Minister James Shaw, National spokesperson Todd Muller and entourage have attended the Paris Climate treaty held in Katowice, Poland.

Reportedly, 38,000 people attended this conference. How did they get there? Did they walk, swim, kayak? No, of course not!

They flew – at taxpayers’ expense – or used diesel trains. They stayed in centrally-heated hotels and conference centres, and used their laptops and smartphones and taxi cabs to communicate.

Where do these alarmists think lithium, the heart of batteries, copper and carbon to build wind generators come from? Sure doesn’t grow on trees. It comes out of the ground.

Poland is the largest hard coal producer in Europe and has the ninth largest coal production in the world at 131.1 million tonnes – and the green/left alarmists haven’t got the courage to hold their conference in an undeveloped country without all the mod-cons.

Don’t fear the fireworks

You might enjoy the crackles and booms on show but your cat or dog may find fireworks excruciatingly loud and absolutely terrifying during New Year celebrations.

So here’s The Weekend Sun’s top tips to help keep your pet safe and calm during the event.

Bring your pet indoors during fireworks and if you aren’t home, try to arrange a family member or friend to stay with your pet during loud celebrations.

Make sure you keep all windows and doors closed and all gates secure so your pet can’t escape, and provide a small, dark and safe place for your pet to retreat to.

If you don’t have a small, safe space, putting a blanket over a table can help and turning up the television or radio may block out the noise.

You should also ensure your pet is wearing an identification tag and is microchipped and that the details are up-to-date, just in case there is an escape.

Their concerts are affordable, they are unstintingly welcoming to visitors, and they observe little things that make it extra special such as using unique backdrops for each concert.

Just in recent months their unassuming base in the Katikati Bowling Club has welcomed The Penmans, Fables, Albi & The Wolves, Dave Alley, Dan Walsh, Wilde Taylor, The Danberrys and more. Long may they run.

They have also been hosting a pile of concerts, from showcases for school bands to the likes of James Reid, Hangar 18 and many more.

This is a brilliant addition to the Tauranga scene, hats off to Grant Hislop and everyone else involved!

Public barbecues good option for summer fun days If you wanted to, you could do a public barbecue crawl around Tauranga and the Western Bay of Plenty for more than 25 days straight without having to cook in the same location twice.

Along the way you could enjoy the great outdoors, and alfresco dining, at locations as diverse as Fergusson Park, the Mount’s Marine Parade, Ororoa Reserve at Pukehina Beach, Omokoroa Domain, Memorial Park, Greerton’s Yatton Park, McLaren Falls Park, the Park Road Reserve at

Maketu and Te Puke’s Jubilee Park.

Between them, Tauranga City Council and Western Bay of Plenty District Council provide more than 40 public barbecues at 26 parks and reserves across the region, from Waihi Beach’s Brighton Reserve at one end, to Pukehina Beach at the other.

And they’re all free!

Using them is pretty simple too – the only real trick is to get there first. There is no booking system, so it works on a first-come-first-served basis.

Be ready to move on if your preferred spot is already taken, or perhaps

keep a portable gas-fired barbecue in the boot just in case (it’s legal to use them in public spaces).

Most of the barbecues are electric, so all you’ve got to do to get your bangers and steaks cooking is push a button.

If they’re gas, the same principle applies but you just have to hold the button in until they light.

Cleaning them after you've finished cooking is a matter of good etiquette, although council staff also give them a scrub a couple of times a week during summer.

Moving away once you’re done in case someone else wants a go is probably a good idea too.

Full lists of public barbecue locations are available on both councils’ websites, so choose your location, gather up the food and the family, and see what sort of endurance barbecuing record you can set.

Look after your barbecue and it’ll serve you well Mixing together a paste of baking soda and water and slathering it on the grate can help keep the greasy build-up under control.

Apply the paste with a wire brush and let it dry for 20 minutes before removing with a dry cloth.

Burn off the residual paste before cooking.

And because every barbecue is different, it’s important to check the user’s manual for any specific cleaning instructions. So pull out the barbecue, get it cleaned and fire it up. Happy snags.

A crumpled piece of aluminium helps to clean hard-to-reach areas.

It’s like the family dog – look after it and it will be nice to you.

We’re talking about the barbecue on the deck, which has probably been under cover for much of winter.

Now it needs cranking up and cleaning, because it has work to do this summer – perhaps two or three times a day through until Easter. Clean means efficient cooking and better tasting food.

Cleaning the barbecue grill thoroughly with a wire brush after each use rather than letting food and grease build up is

an obvious tip, but there are a few more you should be aware of.

Oiling the surface of the grill with a suitable vegetable oil will prevent rusting and keep the grill in good condition.

Ramp up the heat and burn of residual food – it will make cleaning easier.

When the barbecue is warm, use a wire brush or crumpled piece of aluminium to scrub the hard-to-reach areas as well as removing grit and grime.

For really tough build-up, soak the grate in water for a few hours before cleaning or use a mild abrasive cleaner.

One of the world’s favourite American rock bands will meet Tauranga residents all the way, at what’s been pegged as the region’s hottest gig of the summer.

He identifies their fourth studio album ‘Toto IV’ as one of the group’s greatest milestones. “The stars just aligned really well during this album and we were making tracks like ‘Rosanna’ which showed what the band was all about. “That part of our career is something I’ll always be really proud of.”

“We were often at each other’s throats while we also loved each other deeply.

“He was one of my biggest fans but would never tell me that to my face.

“Until the day he died I would always call him when I had a demo to play for him and he would always be there within a half-hour.” Nowadays Steve says the band is more relaxed. “It’s so much more fun. We’re different people and there’s this new level of confidence we’re bringing to these shows.

“You can really feel it. “ Steve says this renewed confidence coupled with the ‘level of musicianship’ the band is bringing will be a recipe for one of the best parties in town.

Despite a break from touring, Steve says he’s fallen back into old routines easily. “I was with the band from the very beginning until after the sixth album ‘Farenheit’. After this I was no longer an official member but was still touring and working with the band on new music, just not at the same level of intensity. I took a 27-year break before I started touring again.

“I’ve jumped back into my old role easily.”

Let us be people of hope and of joy I hope all readers have had a blessed and holy Christmas, and that the light of the Christmas star continues to shine upon you, and guide you into the New Year, as it guided the Magi of long ago.

It was wonderful to be a part of the Carols on The Waterfront earlier this month, and to be with people of many denominations who unashamedly

celebrate the coming of Christ at Christmas.

It’s interesting, however, that each year it seems to get harder to name Christmas for what it is: the Christ Mass, our celebration of the Christ.

I received a card wishing me a ‘Happy Holiday’, but it didn’t specify which one. The irony is, of course, that the word ‘holiday’ comes from the Old English hāligdæg, for ‘holy day’. Christmas is a holy day – and always will be – no matter what euphemism people may create.

As we do continue to delight in the Christ-child born amongst us, let us be people who are unafraid to celebrate Christmas as the sacred festival it is. la tyb More importantly, let us Messianic Family be people of hope and of joy, who allow the Christ ALL WELCOME to be born within us every SHALOM day, and in turn share our SABBATH 10AM Saviour, Emmanuel, Jesus, OTUMOETAI PRIMARY with all we meet.
