Designner offers to help reduce waste
APāpāmoaBeachswimwear designeradmitssshe’sbaffledby companiesthatask““whhat’s s the catch”whensheofferstoteach themaboutzerowastegarment production–forfree.
EmmaLaRoccaistheownerof emroce; theworld’sonlyzero-wasteswimwear brand.She’sofferingfreezero-waste fashiontrialstolocalcompanies,thanks tofundingfromTaurangaCityCouncil aimedatreducinglandfillwaste.
“It’sassimpleaschangingthecutting plan,whichtakesaslittleas15minutes remotely,andbrandscanimmediately saveonfabric,labourandwastecosts,” shesaid.“We’vecompletedtheworkfor thefirsttwocompanies,butwehadthree brandscancelonusforthethirdspot. I’msurprisedathowdifficultit’sbeento getbrandstocommittoorevenshow interestinthefreezero-wastedesigntrials thatI’moffering.”
Trials
LaRoccahasmanagedtofillthefinal spaceinherTaurangatrialwithCarleen Schollum,who’sbeenworkingwith sustainablefashionbuthasn’tyetworked withzero-wastedesign.
“She’sexcitedtoapplythetechniquesto thegarmentsshe’scurrentlyworkingon,” LaRoccasaid.
Whilesmallbrandsareshowinginterest, LaRoccasaidthegreatestimpactwill comefromcompaniesthatareproducing garmentsatscale.

“We’retakingafinancialloadoff companiesandaloadofftheplanet,”she said.“Ourlandfillsarefillingup;that’s whythisfundingexists.”
Thetrialsarefree,flexible,andbasedon acompany’sexistingdesigns.
“Theycanapplythecuttingplan changesstraightawayandbenefitfrom theinstantfinancialsavings,”saidLa Rocca.“WhatIgetfromthesetrialsis furtherproofthatzero-wastedesignis easilyappliedtotheproductionmethods currentlyusedinthefashionindustry andahigherchanceofconvincingmore brandstotryitout.”

Careysaidhewantedtocreatea lightweightmachinewithasmall footprint,suitableforsmallerproduction facilities,whileutilisinglocallysourced materials.
“Themachinewasbuiltand programmedrighthereinTePukeatthe Electrodipworkshop,includingallthe fabricationandwiring,”Careysaid.
TheKKPpackhouseishighlyautomated withautomaticboxmakers,fillersand closingalreadyinusealongwithits
cameragraders,makingKKPtheperfe packhousetotrialthenewroboticstac RegionalmanagerJarradBateshasbe impressedwiththetrialsofar.
“Thefactitcanstackanddestack differentpalletsatthesametimeisgre Batessaid.“Thescanningsystemprovi thetraceabilityweneedandbeingable tomoveitaroundeasilyiscertainly beneficial.”
