Conservationisthonoured for50yearsofservice

AWesternBayofPlentymanhas officiallybeeninvestedasaMember oftheNewZealandOrderofMerit forhiscontributiontoconservation inTePuke.

JulianFitter,whonowlivesinKatikati, wasinvestedbyDameCindyKiroat GovernmentHouseinWellingtononMay3. ArrivinginNewZealandlaterinlife,the wildlifeauthorandconservationisthadno plansonretiringandwatchingthesunset.

Conservation

NotlongaftersettlinginMaketūin theBayofPlentyin2009,Fitterhelped establishMaketūŌngātoroWetland Society,toprotectthebreedingpopulation ofNorthernNewZealanddotterelon MaketuSpit.

Hewaschairofthesocietyfrom2010to 2023.DuringthistimefiveEnvironmental Programmesweredeveloped,fundedby theBayofPlentyRegionalCouncilandthe WesternBayofPlentyDistrictCouncil, focusingonbiosecurityandrestorationto prioritisenativebiodiversitysitesaroundthe MaketuandWaihiEstuaries.

In2016,hethenestablishedBay ConservationAlliance,andischair.Almost adecadeon,amongthemanyservicesBCA offer,theysupport35conservationgroups intheBayofPlenty,providingthemwith administrationandon-the-groundadvice andassistanceandgivingthemastronger collectivevoice.“Wedependuponthe naturalenvironmentforourwellbeing

andoureconomicsurvival.Damagetothe environmentaffectsusallandweknow that,andyet[we]consciouslydecidetodo nothingaboutit,”saidFitter.

Workingtogether

He’spassionateabouteducationand believedthatpartneringtogetherfornature willresultinfarbetteroutcomesthan workingindividually.

“Weneedtoeducateeveryoneabout theimportanceandvalueofournatural environmentandhowprotectingitcan benefitusall.Workingtogetherwecanfixit andcanenjoyrewarding,comfortableand productivelives.”

Fitterhasauthoredseveralbooks including‘Albatross,TheirWorldTheir Ways’(2008)withwildlifephotographer TuiDeRoy.Hehaswrittenthreebooks onNewZealandwildlife;‘NewZealand Wildlife’(2009),‘FieldGuidetothe WildlifeofNewZealand’(2010/2021) and‘BirdsofNewZealand’(2011).

Conservationwork

Hisworkoverthedecadeshasnot juststrengthenedconservationwork inNewZealand.Priortoimmigrating toNewZealand,Fitterwasafounding rusteeoftheUnitedKingdom-based FalklandsConservationTrustin1979 andiscurrentlyavicepresident.He wasinstrumentalinestablishingthe GalapagosConservationTrustin1997, servingasinauguralChairandcurrently asanambassador.

In2008,heestablishedandisnowa

committeememberoftheFriendsof GalapagosNewZealandorganisation, workingwiththeCharlesDarwin FoundationandTheGalapagos NationalPark.

Packhousestaffwalkatworkforwwellbeing

AnewwalkingtrackatTePuke’s Trevelyan’sPack&Coolis alreadymakingadifferencetothe wellbeingofitsstaff.

“It’sjustnicetogetoutfrombehind thecomputer,”saidemployment administratorMichaelaTupper.“It’sa relaxingplacetocomeespeciallyduring thebusyseasonwhenwedon’tget outsideasmuch.”

Mostofthejobsinthepackhouseare spentstandinginsideforlongperiods oftime,whileotherstaffmayspend hourssittinginanofficeorforklift.The walkingtrackisusedasabreakandalso forwalkingmeetings.

“Oneofourteamputsshortsand shoesonandrunsacoupleofloops afterwork,”saidmarketingand communicationsmanagerSachaKoster. “It’sjustagreatwaytostretchthelegs.”

QV’sHousePriceIndexshowshomevaluesrose0.10% inthethreemonthstoApriltoanewnationalaverage valueof$914,504,whichis-1.33%lowerthanthesame timelastyear.

BayofPlentyregionsawvaluesriseslightlyby0.28% overthepastthreemonths,buttheyweredown-1.30% yearonyear.

WesternBayofPlentydistrictalsosawvaluesrise 2.96%duringthepastthreemonths;Gisbornewasalso

up2.78%;andRotoruawasup0.14%;whileOpotiki valuesdropped-2.21%.

MotorcyclistscrashonloosegravelinWBOP

“Itwaslikeridingon marbles.”That’showa motorcyclistdescribedthe stateofOldCoachRoadin theWesternBayofPlenty thedayheandtwoother riderscrashed.

MarkColleywasridingina groupof12,allagedabove50, whenthreeofthemcrashedon February27.

Theroadhadbeenrecently resealedandsweptbyWestern BayofPlentyDistrictCouncil roadingcontractorspriortothe crash.However,Colleysaidthe roadhadloosegravelonit.

Hesaidpolicebreath-tested theriders,whoallreturneda negativeresult,andagreedthat theroadwasthelikelycauseof thecrash.

WesternBayofPlentyDistrict Councilnetworkoperationsand maintenancemanagerDesmond Barnardconfirmedfoursiteson OldCoachRoadhadrecently resealingworksundertakenon them.

Witnessreports

NearbyfarmerRobMacKenzie witnessedthecrashunfold.

“Thebikeswentpastme,and IturnedaroundandsawMark justlosingcontrol.Thentwo moreriderscameoffatthenext corner–itwaschaotic,”hesaid. “Iwentstraightovertohelp him.Gotquiteashockwhen hetookoffhishelmetandIsaw silverhair.Theywereallolder Kiwislikeme.”

MacKenziesaiditcouldhave beenfarworse.

“Ifatractororbintrailershad

beencomingtheotherway,it could’vebeendeadly.Allthat gravel–itprobablywould’ve costagrandtosweepproperly comparedtothecostoffive policecars,twofirebrigades, threeambulances,plusACC costs.”

Hesaidthegravelhadbeenleft ontheroadforsixweeksormore.

“There’sbeennosignageeither. Theyputthelinesbackin,but theroadwasstillleftwithpebbly stones.”

WhileMacKenziebelieved signscouldhelp,hesaidthe responsibilitylieswithproper maintenance.

“OldCoachRoad’sfullof curves.Theyprobablyshould havehadatemporarysignup whereithadn’tbeensweptbutat theendoftheday,theyshould havecomebackandfinished thejob.Iftheyhad,those12 bikerswould’veriddenstraight through.”

Resealingworks

Barnardsaidtheresealingtook placeonthreedays–January 7,10,and15forthecombined tworesealsiteswherethe motorcyclecrashoccurred.

“Everyresealsitehastemporary trafficmanagementinplacewhile theworkisbeingundertaken. Thisstaysinplaceuntiltheroad hasbeensweptandlinemarking hasbeencompleted.

Injuries

Asaresultofthecrash,Colley underwentsurgeryandnow hasaplateinhisknee.“My colleaguewithabrokenrib wasinmorepainthanme.My shoulderhurtbadlyatfirst–I thoughtitwasbroken–but threeX-raysshowednothing, andmostofthepainwasgone within30hours.”
