Afterweeksofwetweather,thesun finallyshone,settingthestagefora perfectdayoffooty.
ItwasaspecialoccasionforKatikati Rugby&SportsClub,aswecelebrated ourannualSponsorsDay.Thesponsors’ areawasbuzzingwithourvaluedbusiness supporters,whilethegrandstandwas packedwithloyallocalfanswhocameout inforcetosupporttheirteam.
TheStagssetthetoneearly,singingtheir waiata(song)proudlybeforethewhistle blewandthegamekickedoff.
Bothteamscameoutfiring,butitwas theStagswhostruckfirst,finishingoff aseriesofimpressiveattackingphases withawell-earnedtry.JoelMadsen nailedtheconversion,puttingKatikati up7-0.EasternDistrictsquicklyshowed theirclass,however,fightingbackwith determinationandmatchingtheStags pointforpoint.Byhalf-time,EDhad edgedahead17-15,despiteasecondtry fromKatikati.

Inthesecondhalf,theStagscameback refreshedandrefocused,showingreal heartanddiggingdeep.Theydominated withfourmoretries,tighteningtheir defenceandliftingtheenergyonthe paddock.






Addingtothegreatatmosphere,Katikati Rugby&SportsClubwasproudtohosta fundraiserfortheKatikatiVolunteerFire Brigade.Thecommunityturnedoutin forcetosupportthisvitalservice,taking partintwomeatrafflesrunbytheclub whilethebrigadeservedupacrowdfavouritesausagesizzle.

Katikatiisawaitingthereturnofits mostfamoussculptureafteritwas reportedlyhitbyavehicleonthe April27incidentanddamaged.
KatikatiOpenAirArtcommittee memberSteveGravesonsaiddetailsare stillslimontheApril27incident,which hasdamaged‘Barry,therelaxedtypical Kiwibloke’butitisbelievedavehicle collidedwiththesculpture.
“Itlookslikeavehicle[travellingalong StateHighway2throughthetownship] ranovertherubbishbinnearBarryand overtopofJackandintothecornerof Barryontheseatandknockedhimover.
“IfyoulookatBarry,thedriver musthavehithimontheleft-hand sidebecausehisseattookalotmore damage.”
Emergencypolicetapewasputaround thesceneuntilBarrywasremovedby Graveson,whileJackthedogwastaken toKatikatiPolicepost-incidentandwas collectedbyafellowKOAAmember.
KatikatiOpenAirArt(KOAA)was foundedin1989andhadsincethen commissionedandmaintainedthe township’smuralsandsculpturesviaits committee.

KatchKatikatipromotionsmanager JacquiKnightsaidit’sbeeninteresting thatsomanypeoplehavenoticedBarry isgone.
“Ithinktheyarequitesad.There hasbeenquitealotofconversation abouttheinformationcentreabout what’shappenedtohim,andpeopleare definitelymissinghim.”
AskedifBarrywasbigdrawcardfor Katikati,Knightsaid:“Absolutely!”“He wouldbethemostphotographedthing acrosstheWesternBayofPlentyarea–everyoneknowsBarry.”
Assuch,KnightsaidKatchKatikati cannotwaittoseehimbackwherehe belongs.“Wedon’tfeelwholewithout him–weneedtohavehimbackonour street,keepinganeyeoneveryone.”
AskedwhenBarrywouldbeback home,Gravesonsaidhedidn’twant toissueatimeframebecauseitwould dependontheoriginalsculptor–DonaldPatersonofChristchurch–and whenhe’savailable.“Itwillhinge onwhatDonald[Paterson]hason workwise.”
GravesonsaidPatersonwilllikelyhave totraveltoKatikatitofixthefamous
sculpture.“He’llhavetocomeuphereI wouldthink,butI’mstillfindingout...”
Awaitingrepairs
Asaresult,Barryissittingin Graveson’sshedawaitinghis“operation andrecovery”.
GravesonsaidBarryhadgotawaywith minorinjuries.“Hismainissueishehas abrokenelbow,andthelowerpartof hisarm[isdamaged]–sohe’sgotaway fairlylightlybutitwon’tbeeasytofix him.”
InstalledonKatikati’sMainRdin 1999,Barrywasmadeusingsculpture resin,copperandfiberglassbyPaterson andmodeledonhisfriendBarry MenziesofHamurana.
In2006,BarrygotamatewhenBarry Menziesdonatedthesculptureof‘Jack thedog’andhistoyballasatributeto thelateColinandJuneCarlton,the













Barry was reportedlyhit by avehicleonSunday night,April27,and sustained abrokenelbowand damagedarm.
Barryssteelseathadbeentaken toKatikatiRuralEngineeringtobe straightenedout–butGraveson’sbiggest conundrumiswhohewillcallonto repairJack.“BarryMenziespassedaway in2017.Hedidallofthesteelworkon Jack,soI’veaskedDonald[Paterson] whowouldbegoodforthisrepairjob.”
AndrepairstoBarryandJackwillbe acosttoKatikatiOpenAirArt.“Itwill bebecauseyoucan’tinsurethattypeof thing,”saidGraveson.
