“Makesuremycollaristurnedover properly,”JoanMcGrailpolitely askednieceMaryPickettbeforeshe leftherroomforher103rdbirthday partyatRadiusLexhamParkin Katikatithismonth.

Thebirthdaygirlclicked103onEaster Monday,butfestivitieswereheldonApril 29–andthesharp-witted,sharp-minded centenarianwantedtolooksharptoo.

“Weallusedtodressupinmyday,”said Joan,asthisreporterpouredoverblackand-whitephotographsofaswishly-dressed youngladywearingabeautifullydesigned hat.“Ididgotonightschooltolearnto sewahat–butIdidn’tlikeit,”saidJoan. Althoughlaterinlifeknittingwasafervent hobby–Joan’smanyblankets,singletsand bootieswentoverseastoneedychildren.

Thecentenarian wasnearlynamed Wilhelminaby hermother.“But myfatherdidn’t likeit,soinstead henamedme afteraboat–my middlename becameAlma.”

InfactJoan’s earlylifesawher sailthroughmuch adversity.Herfath Davidservedinan survivedWorldW tobeleftstrandedinEnglandfor monthsbecausetherewerenoboatstoget home.

WWIIended,andHaroldwas discharged,heandJoanwenttolivein Whanganui.“WhenHaroldaskedmeto marryhimItoldhim:‘Well,Idowantto gooverseas…’andhetoldme:“Well…I’ll takeyouin40years’time’.”

HaroldMcGrailclockedup42yearsat theNZRailwaysCorporation,thenheand JoanheadedforEngland.“Weboughta campervanandtravelledaroundEngland fortwoyears.WealsowenttoFranceand allthecountriesyougotooverthere.We gottoseealotoftheworldtogether,”said Joan.

Naturalfood,andfaith

SheandHaroldhadfourchildren–JuliaMay,Paul,CliveandKen–andwithher husbandanavidgardener,Joan’sfamilyput herlongevitydowntoeatingnaturalfood allherlife,andnothingprocessed.“My favouritedinnerwascornedbeef,andlots ofvegetables.”

IfyouaskJoan,thesecrettoher happinessandlongevityisherfaith.“Ilove theLordJesuswithallmyheart.He’staken careofme,”saidJoan,whofoundtheLord inhertwenties.

TodayJoanhastwochildrenalive,11 grandchildren,26great-grandchildren,and onegreat-greatchild.Harolddiedin2004

butJoanstillshareshisloveofcricket. JoanlivedatMountMaunganui’sOcean Shoresfor19yearsbeforemovingto Katikati’sLexhamParkinlate-2023tobe closertoMary,withmostofherfamily livinginAustralia.

RadiusLexhamParkactivitiescoordinator SeugnetTowellsaidJoanwouldhadlived throughmanypoignanthistoricalevents that“forustodaymostofitwouldbe unfathomable”.“SinceI’vegottoknow Joan,I’vebeenawedbyherenergy. Wheneverwehaveactivities–whetherit becards,crosswords,puzzlesorgames–Joannevershiesawayfromplaying.She’s alwaysallin.”

AfellowLexhamresidentagreed,saying: “I’vereallylovedplayingRummikubwith Joan–andshenearlyalwaysbeatsme!” Joanandherfriendsendedthecelebration withapieceof‘processed’cake.Gofigure! HappybirthdayJoan!

KatikatiRotaryClubpartnerswithŌmokoroaRotary Clubtotakelaptopdonations–andtheclubshave managedtogetlaptopstoarangeofcountries.“We’ve sentabout100laptopsinthelastyear–fromKenyato KathmandutoCambodiatoSriLankaandeverywhere inbetween–includingjustaboutalloftheislandsinthe Pacific,”saidBuchanan.

“We’redoingsomegreatworkwithBethlehemCollege, andagroupcalledInternationalNeeds.“Basicallyit’sthe Rotarywhotakesthedonationsanddoesallthework refurbishingthelaptopsandthenwefindpartnerswho cantakethemover.

“FlameSchoolinCambodiareceived19laptopsinApril 2024,we’vesenttwotoFreswotaSchoolinPortVila;and twomicro-computersandpaidforalargephotocopierfor VictorSchoolofHopeinVanuatu.”

AdedicationofthenewGeneration4 ambulancetookplaceatHatoHoneSt John’sKatikatiAmbulanceStationon SheffieldStonMay6,attendedbySt Johnandtowndignitaries.

TustchairmanRajiSinghgiftedthe ambulancetothecommunity,whichwas followedbyadedication,prayersand blessingsbyTeRereatukahiaiwi,Area ChaplainforStJohn’sCentralRegion ReverendJimWallace,andParminder SinghofWCT.

StJohnWesternBayofPlentyarea operationsmanagerMatDelaneysaid theopportunitytogetanewambulance inacommunitylikeKatikatimeansa lot–“especiallyfortheeightfulltimestaff basedouthere”.“They’reoutonalimb fromthemaintownandoftendoingalot ofhardworkbythemselvesuntiltheycan getmoresupport.”

Delaneysaidtheambulancewillbe basedattheKatikatistationasitsmain servicevehicle,andthevehicleitreplaced willeventuallybecycledoutviaSt John’snationalfleetrotation–sotwo ambulancesremainintown.

“Italsocomeswithmostsafetyfeatures intermsofdriving,suchaslaneassistetc, soallthebellsandwhistlestoensureour driversaresafeand canaccountforthe unpredictablenatureof whathappensonthe road.”

It’salsohoped thenewvehicle’s functionality –includingair conditioningatthe backofthevehicle–willmakeforamore comfortableridefor patients.

Katikati’snew ambulanceisthefifth, atapricetagofabout $350,000each,that hasbeenfundedbyWeCareCommunity TrustsinceitwasfoundedinOctober 2021,saidchairmanRajiSingh.Thefirst fourvehicleswenttoTePuke,Hāwera, ThamesandKaipara.
