South knows to stay sharp every game

Look at the South Williamsport schedule and circle the easy games. This is a trick question because none are easy.

South is not affiliated with a league, so it has built a demanding schedule the past three seasons. That has played a big role in the Mounties reaching consecutive Class AA state quarterfinals. It also means South must stay sharp each day.

That is the way coach Casey Waller likes it. And that is also a big reason South started 2-0, producing quality wins against Class 6A Wilkes-Barre and Class AAAA Jersey Shore. The preview edition went to press Monday evening, so games have been played since but a good start is what South hopes can fuel a strong season.

“It’s good to be 2-0 because when I look at the schedule, we’re playing some tough teams,” Waller said after last Friday’s 5-3 win against Jersey Shore. “We better show up to play ball, and getting two wins early is huge for us. I’m excited to see where this team ends up at the end of the year.”

South returns a strong core from last year’s team which returned to the Elite 8. Aces Noah Turner and Kaiser Kistner are back and Kaden Shay earned the save against Jersey Shore. Turner is 2-0, allowing no earned runs in 10 1/3 innings, while striking out 11. Shay reached base in 19 straight games last year and is a versatile four-year starter who compiled a .547 on-base percentage last year, while scoring 28 times.

Kayne Jones is one of the area’s premier catchers and first baseman Tadd Lusk, third base-

man Caleb Neidig, Trace Wertz and center fielder Remington Minier were among those who played well in their first seasons starting. Sophomore Marc Molina hit a goahead, two-run double against Jersey Shore and fellow sophomore Torin Haug delivered a go-ahead, seventh-inning double against Muncy last season.

“The past few years we struggled off the bat to get stuff rolling,” Shay said. “It feels like a lot more guys want to be on the field, ready to compete I think that’s really helped us start the season strong.”

DR. MASSE’S TOP 5 (LAST YEAR’S RECORD IN PARENTHESES)

1 Central Mountain

(21-2): The five-time defending District 6 Class 5A champions are a newlook team, replacing a lot of starters, but the JV was strong last year, and both the pitching and offense potentially remain deep. Central Mountain opened its season with a 5-2 win against DuBois as Gavin Bower threw 4 1/3 strong innings in his first varsity start. Senior Brady Myers was last year’s Sun-Gazette Pitcher of the Year, going 9-0 with a 1.42 ERA and striking out an area-high 84 batters in 54 1/3 innings pitched. vides pitching depth and also hit .348, scoring 24 times and stealing 18 bases. Six different players delivered hits against DuBois, including Watt Probst who hit a two-run double.

2 South Williamsport (15-6): Turner has picked up where he left off last season. The senior right-hander won three playoff games and has pounded the strike zone early this season, throwing 58 of 77 pitches for strikes against Jersey Shore. Lusk hit .373 last year with 10 doubles and Kistner added 23 RBIs.

3 Williamsport (13-7): After returning to the district final for a second straight season, Williamsport is hoping for more and has a nice mix of returning starters, promising newcomers and quality depth as it tries taking that next step. The biggest question is pitching with Cayden Robertson being the only one back with significant varsity action. Robertson compiled a 1.18 ERA last season, striking out a batter per inning, while also hitting .441 with 23 RBIs. Rhode Island-bound center fielder Deacon Brown is a four-year starter who hit .377 with a .486 onbase percentage, three home runs and 17 RBIs. He also has 60 career hits. Cole Shuler had a .500 on-base percentage and several underclassmen received valuable starting time last season. The Millionaires opened on their new turf field Monday against Shamokin.

4 Hughesville (20-4): The defending District 4 Class AAA champions set a program record for

wins last season while reaching the state quarterfinals. Hughesville returns some versatile fielders and talented hitters, but must replace the three-headed pitching monster of Carter Cowburn, Austin Gray and Jed Webb. The Spartans started strong last Friday, thumping Wilkes-Barre, 12-2 as freshman Graden Dohl struck out six in four innings. Three-year starter Aiden Barlett went 2 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs, while Jed Abernatha was 2 for 3 with four RBIs. Trent Wentzel also had two hits and closed the game on the mound. Catcher Tyler Wetzel excels behind the plate and second baseman Gage Thomas is coming off a breakout season.

5 Montoursville (17-8): Like South, Montoursville had a much younger team last season than in 2022 but still fought its way back to the state quarterfinals. The Warriors must replace a lot of experience again but have a good pedigree and rallied from a 5-0 seventh-inning deficit to win at Blue Mountain in states last June. Sophomore pitcher Logan Kirby burst onto the scene, going 4-1 and striking out 30 in 37 innings, while throwing two one-hit shutouts, including in the district semifinals against MiddWest. Jimmy Mussina shined in relief against Blue Mountain and Quinn Ranck averaged a strikeout per inning. Ranck also helps spark the offense and had a .471 on-base percentage.

ing has been the main issue the past few years, but the Bucks have some good offensive potential. Freshman Keller Friese excelled in his first game last Friday, going 2 for 3 with two doubles and two runs. If the pitching improves, Bucktail can make some nice strides.

Canton (14-8): A year after going from 0-3 to reaching the District 4 Class AA semifinals, Canton started strong last Friday, downing rival Sayre, 12-4. Holden Ward is coming off a strong sophomore season and came out firing, striking out nine in 3 1/3 innings, while also going 3 for 3 with two triples. His older brother Hudson is a three-year starter and returning starters Ben Fitch, Michael Beers and Zack Colton all had two hits. Keep an eye on freshman Bailey Gardner who drove in three runs against Sayre.

Cowanesque Valley (6-14): Three or fewer teams have reached the District 4 Class A playoffs the past three seasons, so if CV can qualify, it has a shot at the gold. That goes double since it returns the majority of its starters from last year.

Larsen Swimley, Jordan Vargeson, Graham Hess and Nick West all hit .340 or higher. Improving the pitching will likely determine if CV reaches the postseason for a third time in four years.

Bucktail

Jersey Shore (515): A team which was competitive in nearly every game and which handed Hughesville one of its four defeats, Jersey Shore is excited about its prospects under firstyear coach Joe Dunn. They showed reason for optimism against South, bringing the tying runners to the plate in the seventh after entering down 5-2.

en-bound pitcher Jerrin Loomis shined, striking out eight in 3 1/3 innings after fanning 54 in 34 1/3 innings last year. Gage Martzall is a four-year (See

starter who hit .420 with a .547 on-base percentage, four home runs and 16 RBIs last season. If one is looking for a sleeper in Class AAAA, Jersey Shore might be it.

Lewisburg (7-13): The Green Dragons did not start the season the way they hoped, losing their opener 10-1 against Southern Columbia, but return a good nucleus. Landen Wagner hit .328 as a freshman and Derek Asche, Michael Casale and Cohen Hoover are three-year starters. Blough also is the team’s most experienced pitcher, striking out 39 in 38 innings last season.

Loyalsock (8-13): Loyalsock showed off its offense in its opener last Friday at Danville in an 11-8 loss. Tyler Gee made a quick transition from basketball and hit two doubles, while sophomore Dolan Harman went 1 for 2 with a double and two RBIs. Lock Haven-bound Ethan Nagy hit .456 last season and also compiled a 1.80 ERA, striking out 58 in 50 2/3 innings. Kaden Rodarmel is one of the area’s premier lead-off hitters and batted .388 with 12 RBIs and 20 runs. Drake Dupont excelled late in his freshman season and Preston Sortman had some big innings in relief. Watch out for Deryk Kulp on the mound and at the plate as well.

Milton (6-12): Another team to watch in 4A, Milton returns most of last year’s starters and won three of its last four games. Ethan Rhodes had a big season, hitting 500 with hits in 17 of 18 games. He, Brayden Gower and Monty Fisher

return a quality core of starters from last year’s team which closed the year with a victory. Kruz McCusker is a four-year starter and sophomore Tucker Blasi had some big games. Christopher Koschak is another multi-year starter who has played well. Sullivan allowed nine or more runs 12 times, so its top priority is improving on the mound.

all hit. 327 or higher. Luke Goodwin and Logan Shrawder combined for seven home runs and 30 RBIs. Goodwin and Gower have good stuff on the mound and both averaged more than a strikeout per inning. They combined for 89 strikeouts in 51 1/3 innings.

Montgomery (138): Both the present and future look bright at Montgomery where the team is loaded with exciting, young talent. The team returns several starters from last year, but also has only five combined seniors and juniors. Sophomore Parker Bennett flour-

ished during his debut season, hitting .461 with 35 hits, an area-high 15 doubles, 16 RBIs and 36 runs. Freshman Briar Persing opened his scholastic career last Friday by throwing a three-inning perfect game with eight strikeouts against Williamson. Eight different players had hits in that game, including Blake Fry who doubled and scored three runs. Trace Furman and Parker Persing both had hits and two RBIs.

Muncy (14-8): Former long-time South coach Shawn Finn takes over after assisting the past two seasons. The two-time defending Mid-

Penn champions have won 34 straight league games and have some good players to build around while trying to fill some key holes. Senior first baseman Noah Confer has been one of the area’s top hitters the past three seasons and is coming off a .524 season which included a 14-game hitting streak, as well as 11 extra-base hits and 21 RBIs. Kadyn Berry is another fouryear starter and hit .461 with four home runs, 30 RBIs and 39 runs. Sophomore Dominic Guardini hit .318 and Stiles Eyer .317. Eyer, Berry and Eric Walters all provide pitching depth.

North Penn-Mansfield (8-12): Making pitching strides will be a key for a team which has hit well the past two seasons and which just missed returning to the District 4 Class AAA playoffs. Junior Alex Davis has been one of the NTL’s best players the past two seasons and hit .453 with nine extra-base hits and 31 runs last year. He has 57 hits in his first two years. He, Karson Dominick and Cooper Shaw all threw at least 24 innings last season, so the foundation for potential success is there.

Sullivan County (4-13): The Griffins

Warrior Run (1210): A team which just missed the cut for the Top Five could surge up those rankings if it builds off last year’s success. Warrior Run went from winning five games in four years to reaching the District 4 Class AAA semifinals and returns nearly every starter. Several of those players also competed for the Senior Division all-star team last season which captured a state title and nearly reached the World Series. Warrior Run opened strong in its debut, blanking Millville, 14-0. Returnings starters Gabe Engel, Griffen Harrington, Cohen Zechman and James Keifer all had two hits. Like Montgomery, the Defenders look like a team built for the present and future with many returning starters still being underclassmen.

Wellsboro (10-11): Catcher Caden Smith is the lone senior on this team, but he provides quite a building block. Smith hit safely in 19 of 21 games last season, batting .426 with 30 runs while also shining defensively and throwing out 32 % of base stealers. Marek Mascho is an exciting player as well after hitting .364 as a

freshman. Junior Ryder Bowen drove in 14 runs and fellow junior Gabe Sprouse 11. Like many teams, pitching progress likely will determine which way this season goes. Wellsboro is hoping to improve on last year’s 7.67 ERA.

Williamson (9-11): The Warriors were a victory from reaching the playoffs last season but are a younger team this season. Seth Zimmerman gives Williamson a good player to build around and hit .344 last season. Sophomore pitcher Connor Monroe struck out 29 in 22 2/3 innings and Christian Ling finished second on the team with 15 RBIs, while hitting .302.

South aiming to get back to state semis

Montoursville reached its first district final since 2002 last June. Four starters, including pitchers Mahlon Yonkin and Jocelyn Jean, graduated, but those returning look at last year’s conclusion more as a start than an end.

The Warriors are now focusing on finishing that journey and last year’s experience provides a nice boost. That not only is for the full-time starters coming back but for those who received quality playing time, whether in a starting role or not.

It’s only one game, but Montoursville again looked like a dangerous team in its season opener last Thursday, defeating 2023 District 4 Class AAA finalist Warrior Run. Ten starters reached base and sophomore Julie Friel scattered seven hits as the Warriors came out strong.

“We had a lot of returners come back but we still had to fill four positions in our starting lineup,” second-year coach Mikayla Arnold said following the opener. “The awesome thing is we had a deep lineup last year and it’s kind of filtering into this year where we kind of have all the right pieces to plug in and move on.”

The spring preview went to press Monday evening, so Montoursville likely has played again since then. Either way, the Warriors are hungry to make a season like last year the new

normal there. There is a nice mix of experience and young promise to try and make that happen, too.

Left fielder Natalie Bennett is a four-year starter, Emily George flies around the bases, Avery Cozzi went 2 for 3 with a home run against Warrior Run and exciting sophomore Kayleigh Sheleman is back from a torn ACL, reaching base in all four plate appearances against Warrior Run.

“Our hitting is our main thing. We’re still very strong with our hitting,” Cozzi said. “With our team now, with how we’re set up in the field, I think we have the potential to go and win a district championship.”

Cozzi and left fielder Jill Stone were players who opened last season on the JV team before making the most of their opportunities at the varsity level and becoming valued starters. That serves as motivation for those who did not start in the opener.

It also keeps the team on its toes at practice each day, something which paid big dividends a year ago. Time will tell how much it helps this season, but early indications are that it will.

“We told them all there’s all the opportunity in the world in this program,” Arnold said. “When you get an opportunity and you produce, we’re going to keep putting you in.”

DR. MASSE’S TOP 5 (LAST YEAR’S RECORD IN PARENTHESES)

sport (21-3): South returns nearly every starter from last year’s team which repeated as District 4 Class AA champions and reached the state semifinals.

The Mounties came out smashing the ball in their opener, producing 20 hits in two at-bats and blanking Lewisburg, 26-0. Last year’s Sun-Gazette Player of the Year Alizabeth Schuler picked up where she left off, throwing a no-hitter and going 3 for 3 with a home run, triple and five RBIs. Schuler hit .495 with eight home runs in 36 RBIs a year ago, while going 17-3 with a 1.82 ERA in the circle. Kendall Cardone went 3 for 3 with a home run, two doubles and six RBIs against Lewisburg. A year ago, she hit .364. Gianna Goodman and Mikaiya Hills went a combined 4 for 4 in the opener with three extra-base hits after hitting .408 and .354, respectively a year ago. Sage Lorson and Abby Lorson also had big games and are threeyear starters as is Lily Reidy. Sophomore Maddie Pinkerton provides pop at the bottom of the order and excelled as a freshman.

2. North Penn-Liberty (22-1): Like South, North Penn-Liberty returns an excellent core from a reigning district champion. The Mounties won the program’s first district title and state tournament games last year en route to reaching the Class AAA state quarterfinals. Eight starters are back (See WAHS, 12)

WAHS returns plenty of talent to team

(From Page 10)

from that team, including Maceknzi Tice who shined as a hitter and pitcher. Tice hit .484 with 21 RBIs and went 19-1 with a 1.24 ERA and 195 strikeouts in 136 innings. Payton Chapel hit .447, Haley Litzelman .402 with 36 RBIs and Megan Spohn .346. Litzelman’s defense was a game-changer in both the district final and state tournament as well. Saige Lehman is another quality threeyear starter and hit .341 last season. North Penn-Liberty prepared for the postseason well a year ago, earning wins against District 6 Class AAAAA champion Central Mountain and Class AA state qualifier Muncy.

3. Central Mountain (16-4): Speaking of the Wildcats, they repeated as district champions and also have a dangerous blend of experience, pitching and balanced hitting. Seven starters return from a team which also repeated as HAC-I champions, including standout pitcher Adalynn McKeague who went 15-3 with a 1.56 ERA and 179 strikeouts. The senior has 430 career strikeouts and has gone 37-8 the past three years. Katelyn Bowman hit a team-high .413 last season while Madison Hardy hit .397 with eight home runs and 22 RBIs. Madisyn Wian also hit .397 and produced 12 multi-hit games, including seven straight at one point. Sophie Mitchell and Harley Kunes combined for five home runs and Central Mountain won its final nine league games to take the title.

DAVE KENNEDY/Sun-Gazette

Kendall McAnelly of Williamsport delivers a pitch late in the game against Central Mountain last spring. Williamsport brings back plenty from last year’s 13-9 team.

4. Williamsport (139): Although Williamsport took some heavy graduation losses, the cupboard is hardly bare. Brenna Beck, Ashlyn Robinson and Emma Vollman all excelled as first-year starters and Abby Robertson is a four-year starter who has played well throughout her softball career. Beck hit a go-ahead RBI eighth-inning triple at Loyalsock last year, Robinson hit .319 and Vollman hit a walk-off single against Jersey Shore. Robertson hit .347 with 14 RBIs, closing the season on an eight-game hitting streak. The Lock Haven-bound senior also is a good pitcher who went 4-2 with a 3.02 ERA last spring. Bailey Livermore

came on strong in the circle late last season and allowed just eight hits in 13 innings while producing a 1.62 ERA and hitting .333.

5. Muncy (21-3): Muncy has reached consecutive District 4 Class AA district finals and state tournaments, coming within in a hit or two of beating Eastern Region champion Bald Eagle in last year’s opening round. St. Bonaventure-bound pitcher Nolah Moyer is one of the state’s premier pitchers and went 21-2 with a 0.44 ERA last season, striking out 250 in 169 2/3 innings. Moyer has 541 career strikeouts and also hit .554 with 12 doubles and 23 RBIs a year ago. Four-year starting shortstop Casey

starters from last year’s District 4 Class A champion and are hoping to break through and win their first state tournament game this season. Senior Makenzie Wagner already is the program’s all-time hits leader (123) and hit .620 with 33 RBIs last season, while also going 11-5 with a 1.69 ERA. Eva Sockman flourished as a freshman, hitting .561 with 36 RBIs and closed on an 18-game hitting streak. Lola English also had a big freshman season and hit .508, while Kendall Wagner hit .414 with 23 RBIs in her debut season. After having never made the playoffs prior to 2017, Bucktail has easily made the postseason in six straight seasons.

time since 2011. Excellent four-year starters Sara Stroup and BrookeLynn Walters must be replaced but most of last year’s contributors are back and Hughesville also should receive a lift from incoming freshman Maddie Smith. Sophomore Eve Breon threw a four-hitter against Central Columbia late last season and Loralie Bennett and Ella Breneisen also have thrown well at times the past two years. Avery Puderbach put together a strong freshman season, hitting .423 with a .658 on-base percentage. Addison Detweiler is a three-year starter, so Hughesville could be poised for a breakthrough.

Fry is the program’s all-time leader in runs scored and hit .438 with 21 RBIs. Catcher Taylor Shannon excelled defensively throughout her sophomore year, while also hitting .484 with five home runs and 29 RBIs. Kaylyn Rice, Callie Gentzeyl and Chevelle Bauman all are three-year starters who also helped Muncy capture last year’s MidPenn championship while going undefeated in league play.

THE BEST OF THE REST (ARRANGED IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER)

Bucktail (16-5): It’s a testament to the depth of softball in this area that Bucktail is not among the Top Five in the initial rankings. The Bucks return seven

Canton (13-9): Canton reached last year’s district final against Bucktail, but is replacing most of those starters. It could be a growing season, especially with the NTL being especially deep this season. There are some exciting players, though and freshman struck out seven in a season-opening loss against Sayre while also hitting a triple and scoring three runs. Fellow freshman Cyra Hugo added a double.

Cowanesque Valley (16-4): The Indians return a good core from a team which earned the No. 3 seed in last year’s District 4 Class AA playoffs. CV has reached the postseason in three straight years, playing in both the district final and Class A state tournament two years ago.

Hughesville (9-11): The Spartans came within a victory of reaching the postseason in a nonopen format for the first

Jersey Shore (1410): The defending District 4 Class AAAA champions return the majority of their starters from a team which won the program’s first state tournament game since 2010. A 9-2 loss against Mifflinburg in the season opener could be a wakeup call for a team which again has championship potential. Lynna Clark and Isabelle Engel form a strong pitching combination and the offense is as deep as it is talented. Engel hit .462 with 24 RBIs and delivered a hit in 22 of 24 games. Dani Miller excelled as a freshman, hitting .412 and senior Jocelyn McCracken is a four-year starter coming off a .373 season which included 10 multi-hit games. Clark struck out 90 batters in 84 innings and also hit .343 with four triples and 11 RBIs. Jersey Shore excelled in close games late in the season, winning three (See BULLDOGS,

straight one-run playoff games.

Lewisburg (8-12):

Two years after reaching the Class AAAA state championship, Lewisburg is in a rebuilding mode with just three starters back. Still, the Green Dragons have a good building block in four-year starter Sydney Bolinsky. The senior hit .358 last season, drove in 16 runs and produced a .983 fielding percentage. Bolinsky also has 74 career hits.

Loyalsock (17-4):

Last year’s HAC-III champions must replace standout pitcher Marissa Helmrich, but have several quality options in Lydia Kreshock, Sophia Miller and Anna Luxenberger. The Lancers also possess a potentially dangerous offense which can take some pressure off the pitching staff.

Katie Ryder is one of the district’s best center fielders and her defense saved wins against Abington Heights and Jersey Shore. Ryder also hit .507 with three home runs, 34 hits and 14 RBIs. Bella Mileto consistently ignited the offense from the lead-off spot, hitting .429 with three home runs and 25 runs. Luxenberger hit .451 with 20 stolen bases and her sister Maddie excelled behind the plate, while hitting .456. Kathryn Ray and Ava Damiano are back after having good seasons and Shyla Fulp came on strong late in her freshman year, going 3 for 3 in a late-season win against Holy Redeemer.

Milton (1-18): There really is nowhere to go but up for the Black Panthers. Milton did get a taste of winning late

Grace Lorson of Jersey Shore is picked up by team mate Abigail Crumb after being called safe at home on a three-run home run by Lorson in the third inning during a game last year.

in the season, scoring 28 runs against Executive Education. The Panthers will try carrying that momentum into surprising some opponents this spring.

Montgomery (1210): It was a transition season a year ago as Montgomery replaced eight starters from the 2022 Class A state champions. That the Raiders won another playoff game provided excellent experience and now eight starters, as well as several other contributors are back for a team which could again emerge as a district title contender. Sophomore Madisyn Miller hit .484 with a .573 on-base percentage, producing 30 hits and 24 RBIs. Zoe Furman can play in the

outfielder or behind the plate and also had a big freshman year, hitting .476 with 30 his and 20 RBIs. Summer Drick is one of several other players to watch from a team which gave Muncy its toughest league game last year, losing 3-2. Pitcher Ava Hartman received some quality time last year and showed good poise whenever she pitched.

Montoursville (147): Sheleman was having a big freshman season a year ago before tearing her ACL. The injury moved Bennett from the outfield to shortstop. Now, George has come on strong at shortstop, allowing Sheleman to move to second base and Bennett into center field. That strengthens Mon-

runs and added eight multi-hit games. Sophie Reid hit .333 and Neumann won five of its last seven regular season games.

Sullivan County (910): The Griffins reached districts for a second straight season and also return the majority of their starters from last year. Karlee Wettlaufer is a four-year starter and Kayla Fowler a threeyear starter. Fowler hit .440 with three home runs last season and sophomore Emilia Viveiros .388 with 16 RBIs. Viveiros also struck out 80 batters and helped Sullivan start the season 4-0.

could bode well for the future. Caralyn Wanner and Paige Logsdon provide some building blocks and Wanner had three extra-base hits in her first season starting last year.

toursville’s defense and the Warriors made no errors in their opener.

St. John Neumann (11-9): Neumann enjoyed one of its best seasons last year, setting a program record for wins and reaching the District 4 Class A semifinals for the first time. The Knights have the potential to build upon that success, too, returning a strong group of players. Lizzie Weller has been one of the MidPenn’s best players the past two seasons and hit .611 with five home runs, 20 extra-base hits and 28 RBIs last season. She also has 239 strikeouts in two seasons at Neumann and closed her season last year by going 13 for 14. Gigi Parlante hit .542 with two home

Warrior Run (1212): A bracket buster last year, Warrior Run reached both the District 4 Class AAA championship and state tournament as a No. 6 seed, defeating Central Columbia in the quarterfinals. While the team lost some offensive pop, the majority of the starters are back as is sophomore pitcher Mackenzie Heyler who surged down the stretch. Heyler struck out six in 5 1/3 innings against Montoursville in the opener, while Maura Woland and Liana Dion each delivered two hits. Kayla Swartchick also had a hit in that game and hit .338 with 21 RBIs last season. Lakesha Hauck excelled during her freshman season and drove in 20 runs while fellow freshman McKenna Forman added 15 more.

Wellsboro (4-15): The Hornets will be one of the area’s youngest teams and must replace most of last year’s starters. Doing so will not be easy in the deep NTL, but the young players receiving ample experience

Williamson (9-11): The Warriors came within a victory of reaching districts, losing their season finale. Still, it was a big turnaround and Williamson could again compete for a playoff berth this season. Improving the pitching will be the top priority but the offense generated a lot of runs at times. Sophomore Kenna Thomas is a big hitter and hit a grand slam in an early-season win against Wellsboro.

Class AA field has plenty of talented athletes

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD CLASS AA CANTON

Coach: Casey Aylesworth

Returning district qualifiers: Daveian Crowley (100, 200, 400, 1,600 relay); Kendall Kitchen (pole vault, 200, 100 relay, 400 relay); Alexis McRoberts (discus, 400 relay, 100 relay).

Returning state qualifiers: none

Roster Seniors – Natalie Kapichok. Juniors - Daveian Crowley, Kendall Kitchen, Adrianna Yellenic. Sophomores - Alexis McRoberts, Kat Thrush. Freshmen - Vayda Bryan, Layla Frisbie, Olivia Kelley, Stella Rockwell, Ashley Valera, Cailyn VanNoy, Danah Wesneski.

OUTLOOK: The Canton girls track program heads into the season with some exciting returners in senior Kendall Kitchen and sophomore Alexis McRoberts, who each look to build off district appearances from last season. They’re each pushing to make their first appearances at states this year.

“We have a couple girls who were on the fringe of being state qualifiers last year. Kendall, Daveian, and Alexis were on a district medalist 4 by 4, and individually were very close to being state qualifiers in their individual events,” said Canton coach Casey Aylesworth. “Our goal for them is to keep improving, and hopefully make the trip to Shippensburg with them.”

Along with a talented returning cast, the Warriors also bring in depth, with seven freshmen rounding out their small roster. The hope is for those freshmen

to carve out their roles as they gain experience and above all else, remain healthy.

“In a short season, we need to focus on staying injury free,” said Aylesworth. “We have a relatively small team, with limited participants and track in one those sports where there is a very fine line between working hard to achieve goals and working too hard without adequate rest and getting injured.”

HUGHESVILLE

Coach: Fredrick Glenwright

Returning state qualifiers: Kylie Temple (300 hurdles); Grace Fortin and Vivian Draper (800 relay).

Returning district qualifiers: Taylor Bunce (100); Bryn Derrick (100, 400 relay), Destini Flowers (high jump); Gwen Kishbaugh (high jump); Katie Miller (3,200), Makayla Miller (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles); Hailey Myers (triple jump), Lexi Kurzawa (400, 400 relay), Sarah Pidcoe (400), Maya Poust (100 hurdles), Vivian Draper (800), Grace Fortin (1600, 800 relay), Kylie Temple (200, 300 hurdles, 400 relay).

Roster Seniors – Bailey Derrick, Bryn Derrick, Destini Flowers, Libby Fortin, Grew Kishbaugh, Lillian Laidacker, Lindsey McDonald, Katie Miller, Makayla Miller, Hailey Myers. Juniors – Sadia Ammar-Khodja, Izzy Biddle, Aubrey Hamm, Reese Kirk, Lexi Kurzawa, Sarah Pidcoe, Sarah Pidcoe, Maya Poust, Deja Roark, Jada Roark, Ava Swisher, Abby Tripoli. Sophomores – Taylor Bunce, Carly Converse, Vivian Draper, Grace Fortin, Laura Ochs, Calli Riegner, Jaeden Snyder, Kylie Temple, Sadie Turnbow, Elizabeth Wolfe, Delilah Worthington. Freshmen – Micayla Applegate, Sierra DeWire, Anna Easton, Hannah Laidacker, Malyah Maneval, Payton Phillips, Sophia Poust, Hailey Stevens, Saka Talia, Katelyn Temple.

OUTLOOK: Hughesville made noise at least year’s state meet, with

then-freshman Kylie Temple placing sixth in the 300-meter hurdles and Hailey Poust, Grace Fortin, Kate Fortin and Vivian Draper taking ninth in the 800 relay. Of those five athletes, Temple, Grace Fortin and Draper are all set to return, heading into their sophomore seasons having already experienced Shippensburg. They’re at the forefront of a returning cast of 13 district qualifiers, plenty of which medaled at the event.

Temple claimed district bronze in the 300-meter hurdles to advance to states, Vivian Draper took fourth in the 800-meter, Bryn Derrick took fifth in the 200 and sixth in the 100-meter run and Hailey Myers took sixth in the triple jump. Each will look to build off successful runs this season.

“I would like to see all of our returning district letter winners continue to improve and believe they can,” said Hughesville head coach Fredrick Glenwright. “We have some depth in the running events and have profited from the growth and development of cross country under the leadership of Griffin Molino.”

LOYALSOCK

Coach: Jessica McCoy

Roster Seniors – Natalie Bower, Norah Bowes, Isabella Dadzie, Madelyn Hall, Katie Hughes, Margaret Hutchinson, Chloe Kennedy. Juniors – Julia Breon, Rylie Brown, Jordyn Buffington, Kendall Cohick, Lena Frederick, Jenine Ghayyada, Brianna Helmrich, Tabitha Krizan, Abigail Pietraski, Caidence Smith, Adara Whitehead. Sophomores – Caroline Baker, Lilly Elizabeth Belvin, Kathryn Clapper, Alaina Dadzie, Alice Ecker, Aviya Halstead, Jaekairah Harden, Jillian Kennedy, Lynneah Lee, Brooke Lowe, Zowie Rinehart, Grace Schwanger, Gianna Steele, Madelyn Wolford, Hazel Zajack. Freshmen – Olivia Bortz, Rachel Buffington, Caroline Crawford, Simone Gehr, Alyson Hughes, Peyton Kinsley, Dana Kiriaki, Kaylee Kwasney, Mackenzie Miller, Natalie Pearson, Ella Porter, Senai Stratton, Gabriella Wolf, Claira Wurster.

OUTLOOK: Loyalsock saw plenty of representation at the 2023 District 4 AA Track and Field Championships, much of which is set to run it back this season.

Senior Madelyn Hall was at the forefront of that success, claiming district gold and joining Loyalsock grad Kina Cominskie in Shippensburg. Fellow senior Katie Hughes medaled as well, claiming fifth in the long jump and seventh in the triple jump.

Caroline Baker, Alaina Dadzie, Zowie Rinehart, Gianna Steele and Adara Whitehead qualified for individual events at districts as freshmen. With its current freshman class rivaling its previous one in terms of numbers, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a few more firstyear Lancers at the event come May.

Returning state qualifiers: Madelyn Hall (high jump). Returning district qualifiers: Caroline Baker (3200); Alaina Dadzie (100, 200); Isabella Dadzie (400); Alice Ecker (800 relay); Madelyn Hall (long jump, high jump); Katie Hughes (long jump, triple jump); Chloe Kennedy (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles); Abigail Pietraski (long jump, triple jump); Zowie Rinehart (300 hurdles); Gianna Steele (discus); Adara Whitehead (1,600, 3,200 relay); Hazel Zajack (3,200).

“With 47 athletes, including eight seniors, fourteen district qualifiers, and one state qualifier, the girls’ team will see one of its biggest rosters ever,” said Loyalsock boys head coach Matt Hill on the team. “The girls will enhance their roster with some fresh, young talent this season by adding 14 freshmen, many of whom competed in various events at the middle school level.”

MILTON

Coach: Rod Harris

OUTLOOK: Milton heads into the 2024 season with plenty of momentum, fresh off a strong, fifth place showing at the 2023 District 4 Class AA Championships. Eight of its 13 returning district qualifiers are underclassman, with Adelyn Bush, Jayanah Jones, Keturah Rice and Zoey Majors qualifying within their first stints on the team.

With large, talented junior and sophomore classes and a 17-man freshman one coming in, there’s plenty of room to grow alongside its continued success.

“We are very young,” said Milton coach Rod Harris on the team. “Need to get them battle-tested and ready to perform by the end of the season.”

Four seniors in Lydia Crawford, Mackenzie Lopez, Brianna Gordner and Alysia Prieto qualified for districts last season as well and look to finish their careers on a high note. Gordner took sixth in discus and Lopez took seventh in the 100-meter hurdles. They’ll look to build off their respective medals.

Rubi Solano (long jump) and Anna Zalonis (300 hurdles) add to the list of returning individual qualifiers, with all three district relay teams all returning multiple pieces as well. Coupled with a massive freshman class and there should be plenty to be excited about regarding this team.

They’ll be looking to run it back this season, with Simms holding two more chances to do so.

Along with the pair, Ellie Maeulen (bronze) and Anna Baylor (eighth) each earned district medals in the javelin and discus respectively, with Josslyn Davis coming one place short of eighth in the 200-meter run. With continued improvements there, the Warriors could see more representation at states this season.

“The expectations for Montoursville track and field this year are great things are going to happen,” said Montoursville head coach Sean Walker on the team. “Looking at big time performances this year from Anna Baylor, Kendall Simms, Ellie Maeulen, Emma Cline, Josslyn Davis and a lot of very good athletes this year.”

Three of the four runners on its sixth-place 400-relay team in Bradley, Moore and Adalynn Zellers return as well, with the latter two coming in with three seasons left to develop.

“All of the returns are picking up where they left off last year. I feel all our returns will take huge steps this year,” said South Williamsport coach Noah Hulslander on the team. “We have strong leadership and great coaches, and I’m excited to see what we can do this year.”

OUTLOOK: Wellsboro heads into the season with four returning district qualifiers in junior Annika Gehman, sophomore Kristina Belz and seniors Grace Harlan and Sarah Seeling. Gehman made it all the way to states in the triple jump, where she took 13th.

“My expectations are high this year as I have many returning athletes who did great things last year,” said coach Elizabeth Hoover. “I think I am going to see many of my returning athletes doing great things this year.”

Alongside its talented returning class is another double-digit freshman one, as the Wellsboro track program continues to gain size. With plenty of time to grow for its vast freshman and sophomore classes, the program could expect to see more improvements.

“I went from a team of 26 to a team of over 40. My sophomore and freshman athletes are my biggest classes,” said Hoover. “I am sure this is due to starting a middle school program two years ago.”

Claire Dufrene, Sienna Dunkleberger and Raygan Lust were each featured on the 800-relay team that made it Shippensburg, with Lust, Dufrene and Aurora Cieslukowski qualifying in individual events. Coupled with ten returning district qualifiers, the team expects more postseason representation come May.

“We are having a great start to our preseason,” said Warrior Run coach Scott Hoffman on the team. “We continue to want to be our best in May and be successful in the postseason. Our priorities are less about the dual meet season and more about making gains each week and preparing for the Championships in May.”

“We lost a really fantastic group of seniors last year, that led us in terms of performances but more importantly, were fantastic leaders for our team,” said Hughesville coach Griffin Molino. “We are looking for guys to step up and fill those leadership roles.”

It has plenty of talented athletes to do so. Junior Shea McCusker qualified for states in the 800 and 1600, medaling in both at districts. Molino is excited to see what sophomores Tyce Shaner and Spencer Stine can do as well, with Shaner being featured on its state 800-relay team and Stine medaling in the 100-meter run.

“Our biggest goal is to try and compete with and potentially beat Mount Carmel and Southern Columbia who are the best two teams in PHAC III,” said Molino. “We hope that we are able to stay healthy throughout the year and progress nicely as the season goes on. OUTLOOK: Central Mountain returns four district medalists in Jordan Donahay (100, 200), Sam Wible (400), Isaiah Brinker (triple jump) and Logan Dawes (discus, shot put), with Dawes headlining that group with a silver medal in shot put. With one season left, the senior has serious aspirations of making it to states.

“Logan Dawes, a shot putter and discus, does very well,” said Central Mountain head coach Elli Sikorskas on Dawes. “He has a good opportunity to make it to states this year.”

With ten freshmen coming in to round out a well-rounded roster, Sikorskas is excited to see how her athletes will end up pushing each other. In her second season with the program, she looks forward to continuing to build up the program.

“A lot of the upperclassmen are going to work a lot harder due to the fact that we have more up-and-coming athletes,” said Sikorskas on the team. “There’s a lot of freshmen. With new skill levels, it’ll motivate the upperclassmen to try harder, especially for league meets and invitationals. I think they’re going to do really well. We have a lot of upperclassmen support, and everyone gets along really well.”

JERSEY SHORE

Coach Robert Fox

Returning state qualifiers: none Returning district qualifiers: Brodie Herr (100, 200, 400 relay); Elijah Jordan (100, 200, 100 relay); Zach Kendall (300 hurdles, 800, 3,200 relay); Peyton Whitman (400 relay). Freshmen –Brady Allison, Branton Mitchell, Sam Davis, Jake Machmer, Dekin McDermott, Elijah Vartenisian, Leighten Walters, Gage Watkins, Jayden Weaver.

OUTLOOK: While Jersey Shore returns three of its four runners that helped break the school record in the 100 relay, it graduated a considerable number of contributors outside of that. It comes in with large sophomore and freshman classes that will have to fill a lot of holes, as the Bulldogs look to rebound from last year’s departures.

“This is the smallest team I’ve had in the 31 years I’ve been coaching at Jersey Shore. We graduated a lot of quality athletes last year and only return three seniors and three juniors for the upperclassmen,” said Jersey Shore coach Robert Fox. “We have a lot of new-to-track guys this year and I look forward to seeing them progress this season.”

Newcomers include Amir Barbee, Isaiah Reibson, Ashton Sweeley, Paul Hale, Talyn Mauck, Blake Oglesby, Landon Lathan and Brady Allison. Fox hopes those guys can fill holes within the lineup while his returners continue to improve.

“We have quite a few upperclassmen who are new to track and very athletic. It will take some time to figure out where they will fit in the events,” said Fox. “(Regarding returners) Zach Kendall has been working hard all winter and is where he ended last season. Our sprinters of Brodie Herr, Elijah Jordan and Peyton Whitman have a lot of experience and should excel this year.”

LEWISBURG

Coach: Ron Hess

Returning state qualifiers: Jonathan Hess (1,600).

Returning district qualifiers: Jacob Gose (discus, shot put); Jonathan Hess (800, 1,600, 3,200, 3,200 relay); Tyler Kitchens (110 hurdles) Kieran Murray (800, 1,600, 3,200 relay); Justin Nolt (800, 3,200); Haneef Shavers (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles, 400 relay), Ezra Zook (pole vault, triple jump, long jump); Nicholas Coleman (400 relay).

Roster Sniors – Carter Davis, Logan Frantz, Robert McTammany, Kieran Murray, Jackson Ramsey, Owen VanKirk. Juniors – Kai Ambrose, Marino Cardello, Ben Crane, Sean Daly, Maxwell Daucher, Kristian Edwards, Jacob Gose, Michael Hernandez, Jonathan Hess, Wesley Jacobs, Tyler Kitchens, Luca

Kuhn, Ahmaad Robinson, Brady Ryder, Haneef Shavers, James VanLone, Grayson Wynings, Ethan Zeh, Ezra Zook. Sophomores – Grayson Barner, Andrew Brown, Ian Cavanagh, Nicholas Coleman, Dylan Dutcher-King, Jack Johnson, Justin Nolt, Paul Tranquillo, Jacob Weis. Freshmen – Gabriel Ayers, Evan Berger, Aiden Berry, Soloman Bringman, Keegan Crosby, Brain Davis, Rae’shaun Garcia, Riley Gulden-Luthi, Henry Heintzelman, Omer Izgi, Eli Kalberer, Andrew Klingler, Justin Marchiori, Harrison Mirshahi, Anthony Morgan, Matthew Newcomer, Benjamin Thompson.

OUTLOOK: Lewisburg heads into the 2024 season with already successful hurdle and mid and long-distance squads, headlined by Haneef Shavers claiming district gold in the 110-meter hurdles and Jonathan Hess doing the same in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200, making it to states in the 1,600. Senior Kieran Murray saw similar success, earning district medals in the 800 (sixth) and 1,600 (bronze). Sophomore Justin Nolt placed sixth in the 3,200 as well.

“I expected that the middle distance and distance squad will be strong this year, similar to how it was last year,” said Lewisburg head coach Ron Hess. “Jonathan Hess, Kieran Murray, and Justin Nolt will be three athletes that I believe will be racing well and scoring points.”

The hope is to remain competitive at the district level, with the team taking fifth at last year’s district championships. With plenty of underclassmen showing what they could do last season, Hess believes the team could build on what they were able to accomplish there.

“I expect this team to be a strong team,” said Hess. “I’m hoping that we can be competitive in not only the league, but also at the district level. I would like to also send a good number of athletes to states. We have a lot of returning sophomores that were point scores last year, so that group of young athletes will be one year stronger. I’m excited to see these athletes build on their previous experience and successes.”

OUTLOOK:

Though Williamsport saw numerous considerable athletes graduate after last season, its underclassmen stepped up and established themselves. Coupled with a strong freshman class and endless returning district qualifiers, it could look to build on its team silver from last year’s District 4 AAA track and field championships.

“We graduated a very strong group of seniors last spring but have had several underclassmen step-up during the winter season,” said Williamsport coach Jeremy Steppe on the team. “I am confident that this group is capable of filling some of the holes left in our lineup. We were also blessed with a very strong freshmen class this spring who will make a strong impact on the program.”

They’ll likely be without state qualifier Yahzir Slaughter and district medalist Kyreek Bradshaw for the season, however, with each suffering knee injuries during the football season. Nonetheless, it heads into the season with strengths in hurdles, distance, throws and pole vault, with guys like Angelo Casas (mid-distance) and Aiden Everett (sprint and jumps) also expected to make noise.

“Our hurdlers finished 1-2-3 last spring at the district meet –Nique Coleman, Calder Diakite and Aiden Turner,” said Steppe on his hurdles squad. “This trio pushes each other and will look to be a dominant force again this spring.”
