2018 SULAM GALA

Message from the President On behalf of the Sulam Board of Directors, it is a pleasure to welcome you to the 2018 Sulam Gala. This past year has been a year of tremendous growth for Sulam. As we gather tonight, in recognition of Sulam’s important role in our community, Sulam has been designated as a partner agency of the Federation. Additionally, Sulam is on the doorstep of expanding its reach and programming to educational institutions in the city and beyond. This tremendous growth is a testament to our extraordinary educators and administrative staff led by our dynamic Director Lianne Heller, the dedication of our Board of Directors, and all of you who so generously support Sulam and our students. Thank you for all that you do to make Sulam the important educational resource that it has become. Tonight, we recognize the advocacy and leadership of Jennifer Laszlo Mizrahi and Amy Blum. Jennifer Laszlo Mizrahi, co-founder and CEO of RespectAbility, is deeply committed to fighting stigmas and advancing opportunities for people with disabilities. Her valuable contributions include partnering with disability organizations, national, state and local policy leaders, workforce development professionals, media, employers, philanthropists, celebrities and faith-based organizations to expand opportunities for people with disabilities. We at Sulam are grateful for Ms. Mizrahi’s leadership, staunch dedication, and hard work on behalf of people with disabilities. We are especially pleased to honor Sulam’s founder Amy Blum for her visionary leadership and longstanding dedication to Sulam. In 1996, against all odds, Amy together with a small group of parents and special educators founded Sulam. Amy served as the President and Executive Director of Sulam from its founding in 1998 to her retirement in 2009. Sulam and its students have benefited immensely from Amy’s passion, years of hard work, and commitment. We are very grateful to Amy for her important contributions to Sulam. The theme of this year’s Gala—“Elevate”—pays tribute to Sulam’s extraordinary and meaningful impact in elevating the lives of students, teachers, the Sulam community, and the greater community. Tonight, we celebrate Sulam students, who elevate Sulam and the greater community by making valuable contributions that demonstrate their important and meaningful self-worth. We celebrate Sulam educators, who elevate the Sulam family by using innovative techniques and strategies to inspire, motivate and captivate, and who lead with passion, commitment, and utmost professionalism. Tonight, we celebrate the entire Sulam family especially all of you who have gathered here tonight - for elevating Sulam’s critical mission. Thank you for joining us this evening, for your generosity, and for supporting Sulam’s vital mission. Sulam’s impact and success would not be possible without you. On behalf of the entire Sulam family, thank you. Enjoy the Evening! Judah Lifschitz President 2018 SULAM GALA

How does Sulam elevate students, teachers, the school community and the world? We elevate a student’s self-worth when they learn that their disability does not define them, that they are valued and respected for their contribution to the world as a fellow human being. Teachers elevate the level of engagement for an entire class when they welcome a student who learns differently, and uses innovative techniques and strategies to inspire, motivate and captive him. School communities elevate society when students, teachers, and parents embrace diversity, treating individuals with respect and dignity, and never allow a learning style to dictate acceptance. We elevate a world in need of kindness, compassion and love when we value every human being, and embrace every single child. You elevate our unlimited expectations for our students, teachers, communities and the world with your presence and support this evening at our annual scholarship gala. Thank you! 2018 SULAM GALA

Message from the Director Dear Friends, It is with tremendous excitement and pride that I can announce that Sulam has entered a new phase in its work within the Greater Washington community and beyond. Just a week ago, Sulam became a Partner Agency with the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington, a long-time goal that has now been realized! To date, as a direct services program, we have changed the lives of hundreds of students with disabilities in their community school - Berman Hebrew Academy, as well as made a powerful impact on general education students and teachers who have learned to broaden their views and teaching strategies to incorporate more friends and learners. Now, our mission to put into practice the inclusion of students wherever they are is becoming a reality. As the community resource in special education, Sulam is primed to offer its expertise to day schools and supplemental schools in the area, and nationally. We expect to be delivering our services to many schools both locally and nationally within the next two years! While we grow in our services, we also continue to grow as a program at Berman. More students are applying for admission than ever before. And we are serving a broader range of students than ever before. It is with a sense of awe and wonder that I consider the vision and immense drive of our Founder, Amy Blum. She began Sulam with her vision to accomplish what she knew was good and right. It is on her heels that Sulam has entered this new and exciting phase, and I applaud her for her foresight 20 years ago! But she was never truly alone. Behind Amy was a group of strong supporters and a community that demanded the right of each child to be included in their Jewish community school. The important work of advocating for People With Disabilities is never done. We need strong reminders and powerful people to demand the rights of all people to be fully included in society. Jennifer Laszlo Mizrahi, CEO of RespectAbility is just that person! She is a force that never ceases to advocate for inclusion with a particular focus on ensuring equal work opportunities for all. I am deeply honored and proud to participate in the great mission of Sulam, and to be inspired by those, both past and present, who have made it their mission to elevate our community and create a society that is inclusive of all. Thank you! Lianne Heller Director 2018 SULAM GALA

Founders Award Amy Blum

Amy Blum is a third generation Washingtonian and alumnus of Berman Hebrew Academy. In 1996 Jacob, her second child, was born with Down syndrome. Committed to providing Jacob with an inclusive Jewish education she, along with other local parents and special educators, rallied together and created Sulam - Jacob’s very own ‘ladder’, that provided him and so many other students with the educational, social, and emotional support system that would ensure their right to flourish within their community. A dynamic, compassionate and determined advocate for the rights of all students of all abilities, Amy’s name has been synonymous with Sulam since its inception. She served as Sulam’s President and Executive Director from its founding in 1998. Amy retired from that position in 2009. Today, Amy continues to be a strong advocate for Sulam, the inclusion of all students, and ensuring that communities embrace and welcome those with disabilities. Amy lives in Silver Spring with three of her four children, Jacob, Noah and Jessica. Jacob and Noah are alumni of Sulam, 2015, and Jessica will graduate from Sulam this June. Her oldest daughter, Adina and son-in-law, Binyomin, live in New York with her two grandchildren, Yishai and Shaina. 2018 SULAM GALA

Sulam: The Gold Standard Approach to Inclusion Sulam serves students K-12 with a wide range of learning differences, including those with Intellectual Disabilities, ADHD with specified and non-specified learning disabilities, reading disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Sensory Processing Disorder, Gifted and Talented with learning disabilities, Hearing and Vision Impairment and other physical impairments. At Sulam, we believe that students of all abilities have the right to be included in their community school. With this approach, students are given optimal learning opportunities, without the limitations of separation from general education communities that children with disabilities so often encounter. In turn, faculty and students from the general education school community learn that society is made up of diverse types of people, each of whom has a voice, has a need for community and inclusion, and has the right to be heard. In order to achieve this high standard of education, the multi-disciplinary team of educators at Sulam assess each student individually. Every Sulam student has a unique education profile as well as a social-emotional profile, both of which are used to guide instruction. Sulam students receive executive functioning and study skills training, integration strategies, social and emotional skills development, life skills and self-advocacy training and transition support from school to postsecondary opportunities. Students are placed into the general education classrooms in the host school, often accompanied by Sulam Instructional Assistants who ideally blend into the classroom community, helping teachers and other students, but with a priority to ensure the success of the Sulam student. To help Sulam students access educational content, Sulam special educators make appropriate modifications or accommodations within the general education classroom for students as needed. In addition, Sulam’s reading specialist, math specialist, social-emotional support specialist and clinical psychologist, help to develop educational strategies for each child. This highly skilled multi-disciplinary team supports Sulam teachers who deliver instruction that makes learning accessible to every student. Occupational therapists and speech and language 2018 SULAM GALA

pathologists consult about individual students as needed. At times, students are in need of targeted instruction in order to gain basic skills. Sulam special educators deliver instruction to small groups in all content areas to ensure that the necessary skills are acquired. Sulam is recognized by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) as an approved non-public school for grades K-8. For grades 9-12, it is an auxiliary program within the Berman Hebrew Academy (BHA) Upper School. Upper school students receive a BHA diploma. In 2010, Sulam established the Shearim program with both elementary and high school divisions. Shearim (meaning ‘gates’) focuses on the learning needs of students requiring academic and life skills instruction. Students receive a Certificate of Completion, rather than a diploma at the end of 12th grade. Our approach to education for children with different abilities is the gold-standard. It provides unlimited opportunities for each student to achieve his or her goals far beyond the school years. Graduates of the Sulam program have taken many paths, each embarking on a unique journey, including Yeshivot and Seminaries in Israel, four year universities and colleges, community college programs and vocational training programs. Students within the larger general education population have learned to embrace diversity, thus contributing to a more humane society in which all people are treated with dignity and respect. Ultimately, through the valuable lessons of inclusion, Sulam provides unlimited learning opportunities to the entire community.
