PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Cable TV for Dummies? > I rarely watch TV anymore and frankly don’t know where to begin. There is in excess of 100 channels being offered as cable and another bunch available on satellite, giving the impression that we are being fed a large and amazing variety of entertainment options from which to chose. We took a closer look at movie offerings, however, and discovered that we’ve seen most of them repeatedly and thru the magic of TV we get to spend about three hours watching a movie possessing a total time content of an hour and a half...allowing for numerous and random interruptions of commercials which are blocked at those moments of maximum suspense, ensuring that we hold fast to the station break lest we miss the good stuff. This seems like a painful marathon to me. Next, we are bombarded with numerous ‘reality’ shows, which just make me wonder whose reality is being portrayed and whether any of these shows represent any measure of the majority. They seem to come and go so quickly that it’s difficult to embrace ‘reality’ which cancels suddenly in two or three months of airing. In my opinion, with rare exception, the ‘reality’ is that TV listings would be better described as “TV for Dummies”! I’d rather get my sweet and juicy celebrity gossip from the print media, like in the entertainment section of the magazine you are reading right now in hard copy or online, which gives the freedom to choose exactly what you want to read, when you want to read it. Peruse the ads which interest you,

switch in mid-story to another on your own terms...there are no upfront charges for content you select and then dislike as with video on demand. One other thing, reading is back in style and Orlando Style continues to deliver plenty of activity choices via our news events…we call it ‘NEWSTOME’! It’s free to all so sign up today on our website. We know you will enjoy this great May issue with a preview of unbelievable photography presented at the annual ‘Snap!’ event this month. Since its inauguration and our contribution to promoting it a few years ago, ‘Snap!’ has grown considerably. Also, with Bridal being a hot topic, check out the ‘Wedding Traditions & Etiquette’ article by Jessica Sanchez plus the ‘Working and Wedding – A Balancing Act’ by Channel 6 anchor Bridgett (Williams) Ellison and her advice on how to plan a stress-free wedding. By the way – Congratulations to both Bridgett and Cyrus Ellison on their marriage! Last, make sure you read about the “Wow Factor” personalities right here in our beautiful city. > Brides-to-be, do you know the average cost of a wedding? No, of course you don’t, because if you did you wouldn’t be reading this article, you’d be frantically scouring the Internet trying to find a second, or even a third job. It‘ll run you about $27,800 according to TheKnot.com. That’s roughly how much it’ll cost to show off your wedding dress, bouquets, pew ribbons, flower girl, chair bows, and such to your family, friends, your mother’s 4th grade piano teacher, uncle Jim’s distant second cousin Jane, etc. It may surprise you to know that many wedding customs stem from more than just a hormonal gene that compels women to desperately desire free gifts or things like real flowers and matching napkins. A lot of customs are steeped in world tradition that can actually be traced back hundreds of years before marketing companies were around to capitalize on them. So while the wedding process may seem like a masochistic ritual that we’ve all been tricked into desiring, there’s actually a method to the madness; a horribly skewed, materialistic shell of a method, but a method none-the-less. Wedding rings - Though nowadays the wedding ring is a symbol of love and fidelity, nearly 5,000 years ago it held a more literal meaning for ancient Egyptians: eternity. The circle symbolized the idea of going on forever and ever and ever (and ever) with no discernible start or end point. Guess the Egyptians were more realistic about what marriage would be like. The tradition was later adopted by the Romans who placed the wedding ring on the fourth finger of the left hand because the vein in that hand - which they called the “vein of love” - runs directly to the heart. Of course, the Romans didn’t have access to Wikipedia at the time so there was no way for them to know that all fingers have a vein that runs to the heart. Or maybe they DID know it but kept it a secret lest the bride demand a ring for each finger. Bouquets - When you think about it, flowers are probably the most ironic part of a wedding; they’re the most worthless and nonsensical decoration while at the same time being the most expensive and essential. A wedding without flowers is like a cake without frosting. Bland. But the tradition of carrying flowers may actually stem (ha!)

from a very practical reason. Roman brides carried a bunch of herbs, such as garlic and rosemary, under their veils to symbolize fidelity and fertility and to ward off evil, but they would also carry flowers because, as the legend goes, people only showered once a year and fragrant flowers were used to cover the bride’s pungent body odor along with the groom’s stench of regret. Incidentally, that yearly bath was supposedly taken in May which brings me to the next tradition:

“It may surprise you to know that many wedding customs stem from more than just a hormonal gene that compels women to desperately desire free gifts or things like real flowers and matching napkins.” June weddings - Have you ever noticed that come March you have an unusually high number of birthday parties to attend? That’s likely because many of your friends were the result of a June honeymoon. June tends to be the most popular month for weddings, and while nowadays it has more to do with nice weather, some people theorize it may have had to do with the fact that centuries ago people took their yearly bath in May and still smelled pretty good in June. But historians say it was really about honoring the ancient Roman goddess of marriage, Juno. However, as time went on couples became more practical. They would get married in June so they could time the conception of their first child so the wife wouldn’t be too far along in her pregnancy to help out during harvest time, thus proving my point that chivalry died a long, LONG time ago. The Best Man - The duties of the modern day best man have basically been reduced to paying for bottle service and lap dances, but centuries ago his role was slightly more dignified: kidnapping accomplice. Back then

if the bride-to-be’s family didn’t approve of the groom he would have to do more than just force a smile and endure snide remarks over Thanksgiving dinner, he would have to sneak into her home at night and forcefully take her. To do this he would have to enlist the help of his most trusted male companion: the best man (you wouldn‘t want to bring along the so-so man for a task like this). But the best man’s job didn’t end there. During the entire wedding he would have to stand to the right of the groom, with his hand on his sword, prepared to protect the couple should the bride’s family try to get her back. Though some men today would probably rather use a sword to fight off an angry mob than have to stand up in front of a crowd and give the best man speech. Bridal showers - This event has its roots in Holland and shows a less barbaric contrast to how women handled the issue of a father not approving of the husband-to-be. When a bride’s father refused to provide her with the necessary dowry to marry a man who was clearly beneath her, the bride’s friends, in an attempt to get her off the singles market, would rise to the occasion and “shower” her with gifts so she would have her dowry and be able to marry the man of her choice. Obviously dowries are no longer an issue today but naturally women aren’t going to pass up an excuse to get free gifts. So instead of letting the tradition reside comfortably in the annals of history, women have instead found a way to glorify it into yet another ritual in which they can ooh and ahh over things like stainless steel pots, or lacy under-things that are so scratchy and uncomfortable even the cat won’t lay on them. Bridesmaids - Contrary to popular belief, being a bridesmaid was not a form of extreme medieval punishment for women who committed heinous acts of violence. From the 17th to 19th century, it was believed that evil spirits or spurned suitors would show up to a wedding to harm the bride and groom. So all the bridesmaids and groomsmen would dress the same as the couple and stand next to them so as to confuse the jealous entities. Eventually brides came to realize that they actually WANTED to stand out and they could do this more effectively by making their bridesmaids wear hideously ill-fitting dresses in colors usually only found in sherbet.<

> Social butterflies in Orlando found themselves flitting from party to party every weekend in April. It was a busy month for socializing and fundraising and it began with one of the most popular yearly traditions in Orlando, the Downtown Food and Wine Festival! More than 18,000 people came out to stroll along beautiful Lake Eola to enjoy what is considered the ultimate buffet of food and wine. 40 of Orlando’s top restaurants and 14 wine stations served up perfect samples of their most popular dishes. On the chef’s stage guests were treated to live cooking demonstrations by famous food specialists such as Erika Davis from Bravo’s “Top Chef Just Desserts” and Food Network’s “Extreme Chef” Amadeus. A portion of the proceeds benefited the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association Educational Foundation. I did my own informal poll as I strolled down Robinson Street talking with vendors and festivalgoers and it appears that the braised short ribs, Gouda grits, and baby celery from Graze Restaurant at Harmony Golf Preserve was the most popular dish.

When you think Gucci in all its opulence - a fashion house steeped in glamour, famed for fashionable yet timeless products, loved by movie stars and bequeathed to future generations is what the iconic label boasts - you don’t exactly think of mini hamburgers, donuts and face painting. But on March 31st champagne and caviar were swapped out for lollypops and sliders because this Gucci party catered strictly to fun-loving, pint-sized tykes. At Gucci’s private children’s party at Mall at Millenia, kids and their parents enjoyed the lavish experience of perusing through The Children’s Collection at GUCCI where 10% of the event’s sales went to support the Center for Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. If you’ve ever been called out by the fashion police then what better place to plead your case than at the Runway for Justice, a Spring Fashion Soiree at Neiman Marcus. On April 11th that’s where the Central Florida Association of Women Lawyers (CFAWL) hosted a high-end fashion show and silent auction. It was like a

CITY NEWS

one-stop-shop for both fashion and legal advice. Among the auction items was a signed copy of “Imperfect Justice” written by the Casey Anthony trial prosecutor, Jeff Ashton. More than 200 guests enjoyed, private shopping, wine and liquor-infused cupcakes. Delish! The event raised roughly $10,000 for A Place for Children and CFAWL’s inaugural scholarship fund. On April 13th the Florida Film Festival at the Enzian Theater kicked off one of the biggest parties in Central Florida. Going on 21 years now, this international film festival showcases the best American independent and foreign films. It is a 10-day fusion of film, food and festivities that has made this one of the most respected regional film events in the United States; a win here can qualify a film for Academy Award consideration in two categories: narrative shorts and animated shorts. Throughout the 10-day event the star-studded line-up brought out Academy Award winner Cloris Leachman, pop icon Rick Springfield, and even producer/director Barry Levinson was on hand to present his film, Liberty Heights. But perhaps the film that created the most cinematic buzz was Renee, a documentary shot entirely in Orlando using local talent and film students from around Central Florida. The story focuses on Orlando friends who band together to help a young woman, Renee Yohe, break the cycle of drug and alcohol addiction and self-abuse that has plagued her. It tells the back-story of the non-profit organization To Write Love on Her Arms, which offers support to those struggling with depression and selfinjury. But the Florida Film Festival is also known just as much for its food as its films. Bravo’s Top Chef alumni Marcel Vigneron joined a panel of culinary superstars serving up and dishing out the latest in the world of modern cuisine. New this year, with a Yelp account check-in, guests enjoyed VIP treatment, massages, acupuncture, and henna tattoos at the Yelp Lounge. Also on April 13th, the folks with Central Florida Hotel & Lodging Association recognized a great excuse to throw a street party. Although in my opinion, any excuse will suffice for a chance to revel in good music, food and drink. The Bacchus Bash was back! Continuing its kingly reign as the largest street party in Central Florida, Orlando Premium Outlets served as the event’s royal domain with shopping fit for

a queen. Music and entertainment held court on four continuous stages. More than 60 food and beverage booths helped curb guests’ king-size appetites and fundraising was the event’s crown jewel as proceeds went to support grants and scholarships for hospitality management students. Friday the 13th was a busy weekend for Orlando’s social scene. The Make a Wish Golf Classic at ChampionsGate golf course got a big boost in the karma department for the third year in a row. Seven deserving children and their families learned wishes really do come true after more than 200 golfers took to the course for a good cause. Even if their game was a series of whiffs and slices every shot was still right on the money. Triad Isotopes - which hosted the tournament - raised $50,000. A case of the blues hit Jernigan’s at the Amway Center on April 14th; we’re talking midnight blue, royal blue, baby blue, powder blue, sapphire, azure, aqua and every other blue on the color spectrum. Orlando was the city blue-tiful for the night as guests donned their favorite blue cocktail attire at the 6th Annual Spring Swirl event benefiting The Howard Phillips Center for Children and Families. Imagine, a laid back intimate dinner with 300 of your closest friends including a few Orlando Magic players. The blue theme flowed from the clothing to the food as guests dined on blue-inspired delectable delights such as blue cheese ravioli. The event raised more than $70,000 dollars to support families impacted by child abuse. On April 21st Winter Park kept the films rolling at The 11th Annual Dinner on the Avenue in Winter Park where the moviethemed table set-ups made for a blockbuster night! The record-breaking event sold out in one day. Creativity was the main course for the 1,200 guests who gathered to dine under the stars on beautiful Park Avenue. Armed with only the table, white linen tablecloth and chairs, guests were challenged to create their own unique table setting and individual décor. Awards were given to tables with the most colorful, most elegant, most original and best TV/moviethemed settings. The table set-ups may have been the stars of the show but food played a supporting roll. Guests had their choice to do a potluck or hire a local caterer to satisfy their palate.

::

Those who were looking for a more laid back night on the 21st threw on their best denim and silver-spur boots and went hootin’ and hollerin’ for one foot-stomping hoe-down of a night at the Cattle Barons’ Ball! More than 700 guests donned their ten-gallon hats and descended on the Rosen Shingle Creek hotel. The signature gala supporting the American Cancer Society-Central Florida Unit, returned to Orlando for the second year in a row since its successful revival last spring. Dinner was a “dine around” and taste-test of culinary creations from local restaurants. To cap off the evening, Orlando’s favorite countrywestern band Showdown featuring Jaimie Roberts brought boot-scooters and twosteppers to their feet on the dance floor. In all nearly $300,000 was wrangled in! Everyone has their own exercise regimen. Mine is walking, although lately my fingers have been doing most of the walking by texting and typing. But on April 28th The Cruising to Recovery Walk of Greater Orlando gave my fingers a break at Lake Lily in Maitland. That’s where more than 700 people walked a path straight into the record books. Whether their technique was a concrete-pounding power stride or (my personal favorite) a runway diva strut, together they were able to surpass last years’ goal of $80,000 dollars to raise awareness and funding for the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Marilyn Monroe once said, “Give a girl the right pair of shoes and she can conquer the world.” And on April 28th everyone found their perfect pair at the Second Annual Wine, Women & Shoes event at the Rosen Shingle Creek. As charming “Shoe Guys” presented this season’s must haves on silver platters, roughly 300 guests shopped the latest finds in the boutique market place. More than $90,000 dollars was raised to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida. < Know of a Not-To-Be Missed Event? Do Tell!

> As I write this, NPE2012 — the global plastics industry tradeshow — is in its final day at the Orange County Convention Center. The massive show used both buildings at the convention center, and was attended by more than 55,000 participants. And it was the first time this group met outside of Chicago since 1971. Why am I mentioning this? Because everyone was truly impressed with Orlando — attendees, exhibitors and those charged with making the tradeshow happen. We live in an amazing region, and I’m constantly surprised with the amount of things there are to do on any given day of the week. Especially when it comes to special events. With summer almost here, there are several upcoming opportunities that provide a

sampling of the world-class entertainment and culture Orlando has to offer throughout the year. A truly unique option for fans of photography and digital imagery is happening during Snap! Orlando (May 10-13). This four-day event showcases local, national and international talent at multiple venues throughout downtown Orlando. It includes cool exhibits, receptions and educational seminars, as well as student and community competitions. Don’t miss the “Urban Wild” exhibit, which will feature works from global talents including Moby (Los Angeles), Miru Kim (New York), Filip Dujardin (Belgium), Gregg Segal (Los Angeles), Yatin (Orlando) and Sandee Pawan (France). Go to snaporlando. com for more information. Perhaps theater is more your style. Well, you won’t find more colorful performances than during the Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival (May 16-28). The oldest, non-juried festival in the United States, this 13-day stand of theater, art and music encompasses hundreds of shows taking place in Loch Haven Park. There’s something here for just about any sensibility, and while some of the performances can be a bit wild, there is plenty of family friendly content courtesy of “The Kids Fringe.” Just pick out a few shows and go; you’ll be glad you did. Again,

this is another festival that we should all be proud to have in Orlando. For performance schedules and ticket information, visit orlandofringe.org. But maybe you’re more into pop culture. That is, iconic movies, music and entertainment that we all connect with. There’s nothing more representative of mass appeal than Star Wars™ Weekends at Disney’s Hollywood Studios® (May 18-June 10). Each Friday, Saturday and Sunday, there are special shows, panel discussions and plenty of favorite characters. This year marks the return of Star Tours — The Adventure Continues, now in 3-D. Of course, don’t forget about the celebrity autograph sessions where guests can have a memento signed by their favorite Stars Wars star. Check it out at disneyworld.disney.go.com. And for an experience of the culinary kind, consider checking out the second annual Science of Wine event being held at the Orlando Science Center (May 19). This tasting with an educational twist features more than 100 different wines from around the world. Come out and sample unique wines, and then learn about how to pair them with the appropriate dishes. Go to osc.org to find out more.<

> There are very few days in life that a bride looks forward to as much as her wedding day. However, just because this is bound to be one amazing party doesn’t mean that it needs to be clouded with waste. There are many ways to make this magical event elegant, luxurious, and dripping with love while being kind to the planet. If you’re automatically picturing barefoot brides and hippie husbands, think again. Green weddings have become incredibly popular in the last few years, which should come as no surprise due to the environmental crisis and it’s impact on our consciousness. And with so much variety in your options, it’s easier than ever to be eco-chic in the most exquisite way. Your wedding dress is probably the most

STYLETOME.COM

important article of clothing you’ll ever wear. So why not make it something you can feel good about? Some materials that wedding dresses are made out of are synthetic (like tulle and satin) meaning that the fabric goes through a lengthy process of high electric consumption, which is not green at all. However, you have the option to make a beneficial alternative choice by opting for a dress made out of naturally occurring fabrics like silk and organic cotton. Many highly regarded couture lines such as Adele Wechsler are now debuting “eco-couture” lines with dresses that use either up-cycled or ecological fabrics. A naturally made dress is a wonderful way to help the planet, but if you’re really ambitious you might also consider a recycled dress. No, not a dress made out of old water bottles or soda

cans, but rather a dress that was worn for an hour or two only to be destined for a life of preservation. Recycledbride.com is a website dedicated to re-selling couture, brand-name gowns at discounted prices that are either brand new with tags or very lightly and respectfully worn. A recycled dress is a great way to limit the unnecessary resources and extra money that could otherwise be spent on your honeymoon. The wedding reception is not only fun for the bride and groom, but entire guest list as well. Dancing to great music, eating amazing food, and being surrounded with loved ones is a rarity that should be relished. It seems that a party this fun couldn’t get any better, but with a few green touches, you’re sure to be the progressive style maven in your

social circle. Start with choosing save-thedates and invitations made out of pressed flowers and recycled paper, or nix paper all together and go for a chic electronic invitation. Many couples are creating websites for their wedding day, which is a great way to keep your guests in the know regarding your registry and calendar details. Another important touch is to investigate the source of your food. Caterers aim to please, so try to make a request for local and organic food if possible. Not only is it better for you, but local food tends to taste much better as well. And for dessert, sample a few vegan cakes along with your run of the mill red velvet. Nothing is more surprising then finding out that delicious butter-cream frosting you just ate was made without any heavy dairy ingredients

at all! If you’re not sure where to put all this green-goodness, consider a hotel that has the same type of values. Greenhotels. com is a great website that has listings of the most ecological hotels in your area, so you can check out some impressive venues. With just a few minor touches, your wedding can be fun, festive, and friendly to the planet all at the same time. Hopefully we’ve opened your mind to some of the more ecological and economical options out there. Look your best, dance the night away, and embark on a lifelong journey of love for each other, and our planet as well. <

ASk Dr. P Q: I no longer lay in the sun and take very good care of my skin. However, I used to spend a lot of time in tanning beds and at the beach and have a lot of sun spots I would like to get rid of. Is there anything I can do? A: Most cases of discoloration, age spots and freckles that appear on the face, chest, and shoulders are the result of repeated exposure to the sun’s intense and harmful rays. People in sunnier climates, like Florida, are much more prone to sun spots and loss of elasticity in these areas. To eliminate these spots, I typically recommend a series of 2-3 Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) laser treatments. In addition to spots, many people also complain that their skin looks leathery and/or wrinkly. In this case, I strongly recommend fractionated laser treatments to refine skin texture and improve the overall appearance of the skin. When IPL and fractional laser treatments are used in combination, the results are quite remarkable and can literally turn back the clock on the look and feel of your skin. As always, a good skin care regimen and daily use of sunscreen is imperative for maintaining results and preventing future damage.

CELEBRITY WEDDINGS By: Megan Hyde Read more at: StyleToMe.com

Kristen & Jay > The time of year is here where the sun is shining, beautiful flowers are blooming and a fabulous new season is upon us. Not spring or summer but more importantly Wedding Season!! Many brides decide they want nothing more than to say “I do” when life is blooming all around bringing new excitement. While most of our calendars are filling up quickly with the weddings of loved ones, some of us are waging bets on our famous favorites impending wedded bliss. With two, equally historical weddings a year behind us (the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Will and Kate, and Queen of Calabasas Kim Kardashian and Kris ‘The Hump’ Humphries, obviously) something big will have to unfold to keep everyone’s attention. We all have our favorites and we all hope for the same thing: a leakage of photos of some serious aerial shots above a canopy covered aisle way with petals of some exotic choice of flower. Who’s it going to be? For almost six years, American Idol judge Steven Tyler has professed his ever-growing love for his Clear Channel

STYLETOME.COM

Anne & Adam Communicating girlfriend Erin Brady. The two have maintained a relationship some were mildly skeptical over, and endured a very intense time; Steven has been sober for two years. Erin has been a part of this huge accomplishment and it absolutely shows the strength of their love. A rock and roll summer wedding would be marvelous! I wonder how ‘Walk this Way’ will sound on a church organ as she walks down the aisle… The Hills bad girl Kristin Cavallari and Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler made headlines the last two years for getting together, getting engaged, breaking off said engagement, then showing up at one another’s events ‘to support’ and then of course announcing both relationship reunion and a baby on the way. Crazy kids! They’re in love! Don’t expect to see these two walking down the aisle yet though; Kristin said recently she and Jay are looking to possibly have at least one more of their four prospective children prior to marrying! Guess we’ll check back with you guys in spring 2014…

Jionni & Snooki The Jersey Shore princess Nicole ‘Snooki’ Polizzi did find love in a hopeless place with her equally bronzed fiancé, Jionni LaVelle. Shore cast mate Ronnie Ortiz-Magro said it best, “You never, ever fall in love at the Jersey Shore!” However, love knows when it knows. So has been the story for these two since 2012 and in early March these two tan lovers announced all at once they are both engaged and expecting a baby. Will these two be renting space at Jersey hot spot Karma for a reception over summer? Not likely! Snooki has every intention to get post baby fit. There’s always next summer at the shore… Who isn’t excited to see pictures of Anne Hathaway looking divinely in love with Adam Shulman on the streets of Paris? After her awful relationship with Italian property developer Raffaelo Follieri and the terrible realization of his business dishonesties, everyone took it personally that one of America’s sweethearts found herself betrayed. But time heals all wounds. Adam, an actor making his first appearance in television show American Dreams and

Steven & Erin known for his role in 2007’s Dukes of Hazzard, popped the question in November 2011. Some rumors say these two will be having a glorious spring wedding while others say late summer. Whether now or later, these two seem devoted to the idea of one another and if we must just watch their union as it is a while longer we will. They’re just too adorable!

“We all have our favorites and we all hope for the same thing: a leakage of photos of some serious aerial shots above a canopy covered aisle way with petals of some exotic choice of flower.” Okay. Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves are super good looking. How is this union not outlawed? He: an accent, abs able to slice cheese and acting abilities outpouring from his soul. She: Brazilian

Justin & Jessica model, television performer and mother of McConaughy’s two children, Levi and Vida. On Christmas of this past year, Matthew proposed, giving just the right amount of time to plan a warm wedding. Or hot. Hot works for these two also. Two names: Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel. Two truths: number 1.) Any reformed (okay or current) fan of NSYNC feels their heart just may break the day this goes down and 2.) Although Jess possesses many qualities any gal could want, she will soon be in possession of one more thing the rest of us can’t have: JT. The couple, who has not even verified to the media their engagement is on, is rumored to be wed this summer. Some sources say small, some say big. Both way, this will be a star-tacular event and it’s sure to be nothing less than Hollywood perfection. Keep an eye open or you may miss it judging by the secrecy these planners have kept. <

> With the oncoming school graduations, proms, and weddings I get asked how do I whiten my teeth the least expensive and invasive way?

the first 48 hours after the whitening process is completed.

There are many tooth whitening systems on the market that do not require altering the tooth structure. I use the Opalescence Whitening System in my office.

The duration of your results depends on many factors. Practice good oral hygiene, and brushing regularly;especially after consuming staining foods or beverages. If you use staining substances like coffee, tobacco, and red wine you may need periodic touch-ups. Honestly, everyone has had some degree of whitening and have not been disappointed in their results. There is no way we can predict how white your teeth will get.

Questions I have been asked by patients. IS IT SAFE? Yes. The primary ingredient in Opalescence is carbamide peroxide, which has been safely used to brighten millions of smiles worldwide. HOW DOES IT WORK? There are several methods that can be used however the one that I found works the best and is the least time consuming is the chair side whitening that is done in the office. It takes approximately 1 hour. The Opalescence gel is applied to the teeth. The carbamide gel oxidizes and enters the enamel. This process bleaches out the discolored areas. The tooth structure is NOT changed. The color of the tooth is simply made lighter. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

Results are usually seen immediately .We then give the patient pre fabricated trays with Opalescence gel in it and they will use this for 2-3 days after the chair side procedure to achieve optimum natural whiteness.

HOW LONG WILL IT LAST?

If you have a question about whitening procedures or products consult your dentist or feel free to give my office a call at 407 678-4000. As a general dentist it is important that I have a team of specialists I work with. ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS? There are a small number of people who may experience increased sensitivity to hot or cold during the whitening process. This is temporary and usually will go away within

Man with a Mission Dr. Mark Trolice

By: Holly V. Kapherr Photos by Brion Price Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> A large reproduction of the artist Raphael’s famous fresco, The School of Athens, occupies a large section of a wall in Dr. Mark Trolice’s office. The magnificent work depicts Plato and Aristotle in the center of the canvas surrounded by other famous Greek scholars representing branches of knowledge like mathematics, science, philosophy and, yes, medicine. It’s a testament to two major facts about this extraordinary person: He’s got a taste for the classical arts, and he’s absolutely obsessed with learning, development and growth. And, after 20 years as an acclaimed physician, he’s not slowing down now. When I first met Dr. Mark Trolice three years ago, I came away from the interview with an appreciation of life’s ironies and this doctor’s commitment to embracing and overcoming them. Dr. Trolice is a reproductive endocrinologist, a physician who specializes in fertility. When he married his wife, Andrea, they had no idea that their own infertility would lead them through 10 years of treatments, and eventually led to the adoption of their five children. “We wanted to incorporate our own experience into a real and practical way to help other couples avoid the confusion and loss that we felt,” says Trolice. His clinic, Fertility C.A.R.E. (Center of Assisted Reproduction and Endocrinology), is a one-of-a-kind complex encompassing a wide range of educational, medical and ancillary services for couples trying to build a family. “The impetus of all this was family building,” says Dr.Trolice, “we never thought too much about the business side. We want to empower others and inspire them with hope. The complex amalgamates a holistic approach to reproductive medicine.” With a focus on female reproductive system, Fertility C.A.R.E. also employs male

reproductive specialist, psychologist, acupuncturist, and others. The practice is growing leaps and bounds, too. They’ve hired two new physicians, are planning to open a large ambulatory center with two full operating rooms in the fall, and will be opening two satellite offices (one in Celebration, and one on Florida’s Atlantic coast) very soon. A brand-new, state-of-the-art IVF laboratory with nationally-acclaimed staff is already in working order. The Angels Among Us adoption center, run by Andrea and supported wholly by Dr. Trolice, is still enjoying huge success. The medical part is just one piece to the puzzle that completes Dr. Trolice. He’s also an acclaimed vocalist, having recently cut a record of Frank Sinatra covers. “I come from multiple generations of entertainers and singers. My father was a performer and being on stage is like second nature for me,” says Dr. Trolice. With the Rat Pack American songbook under his belt, he’s tackling a new challenge – opera. “There aren’t many who can be compared to Andrea Bocelli,” he says, “but I want to be one of them.” Having authored many articles in scholarly journals, Dr. Trolice is taking the next step in his writing, and is in the midst of writing a book on responsible parenting. “While many can physically create life; what matters is your role in the life you’ve created,” says Dr. Trolice. He sets a good example with his commitment to family in his practice and at home, priding himself on giving 100 percent of his dedication to his work once he’s at the office, and 100 percent of his dedication to his wife and children once he gets home. “Out of everything I’m doing, all the projects and business-building, none of it’s at the expense of my family,” he says. “I’m doing all this for them, and if I’m not there to see it, what’s it really for? My life is my family, and family is my life.”

Along with his medical practice, Dr. Trolice founded Fertile Dreams in 2004, an organization dedicated to education about infertility, in-vitro fertilization (IVF), egg donation and adoption. To benefit the foundation, on Saturday, June 9, Dr. Trolice will be hosting an unbelievable gala party in honor of his 50th birthday at The Ritz-Carlton Grande Lakes. The event will be complete with dinner, dancing, a Rat Pack tribute band, an internationally-acclaimed magician, comedian Steve Mittleman, and a roast of the birthday boy himself. Dr. Trolice will also be taking the stage to perform a few numbers himself. Tickets are $150 each and open to the public with all proceeds benefiting Fertile Dreams. To RSVP to this fabulous event, contact Ingrid@fertiledreams.org. For Dr. Trolice, passion drives his success and he is determined to leave no stone unturned in his life. “The last thing I want is to regret something I did not do while I had the chance,” says Dr. Trolice. “The phrase ‘I can’t’ isn’t in my vocabulary. I have a purpose- and passion-driven life with focused, determined goals. enough so you whittle away to your desired weight can sabotage your weight-loss efforts just as much as overeating can. When your body feels it is being deprived of food, it starts to hold on to more calories and turn them into fat. We understand you’re busier than normal, so if you don’t have time to make a home cooked meal, run to the nearest grocery store and pick up healthy frozen food meals that are not drowning in preservatives. Also, remember to carry around healthy snacks while you’re on the go such as granola bars or nuts.

3. Third, make

some minor adjustments to your daily diet. Be sure to indulge in a rainbow of fruits and vegetables, all natural of course. At least try to include one fruit or vegetable with every meal of the day. In addition, stop drinking your calories. Soda and fruit juice are essentially sugar water, with an intense caloric punch. Stick to water for your drink of choice or eat fresh fruit if you’re in the mood for fruit juice. Also, be sure to consume more fiber. Fiber keeps you full as well as aids in weight loss > If you’re a bride-to-be, odds are your to-do list before you say “I Do” is endless. On top of bouquet choosing, seating arrangements, centerpiece agonizing and numerous caterer squabbles, there is no doubt you are also considering what you look like in your wedding dress to the slew of loved ones you have invited to come watch you tie the knot. The chaos that comes with planning a wedding can quickly eliminate the positive, feelgood energy you so enthusiastically started

With a few tips and adjustments to your regular routine you will begin to consider your new workout plan as your own personal therapy session to keep Bridezilla at bay.

You are about to start a new chapter of your life with the person you are head over heels for. This is a time of joy and celebration. The grueling months that you spend deciding every last detail of your perfect wedding day will all be worth it soon and as you see, it is easier to shape up than you think, so don’t let your workout and diet plan put a damper on the excitement.<

SELF DEFENSE AND STAND YOUR GROUND BY MARK L. HORWITZ > The tragedy of Treyvon Martin’s death has focused attention on Florida.

In 2005, Florida’s self defense laws changed. No longer is a person required to retreat before using deadly force to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm. The 2005 law also allows deadly force to prevent a forcible felony such as murder or sexual battery. The right to use deadly force in self defense is not absolute. A person using deadly force must reasonably believe that deadly force was necessary to prevent death, great bodily harm or to prevent the commission of a forcible felony.Whether a person reasonably believed that deadly force was necessary, is ultimately a decision for a trial jury. Assuming that a person is charged with a crime, the new law allows a defendant to request the judge to dismiss the case. If a defendant proves by a preponderance of the evidence that he or she act-

ed in conformity with the law, the judge will dismiss the case. If the case is not dismissed, the trial jury will determine whether the defendant is guilty or acted within the law. Florida law is not the same for a person who initially provokes the use of force. Before using deadly force that person must retreat or withdraw from physical contact and indicate clearly that he desires to terminate the use of force. Even then, the person can use deadly force only upon a reasonable belief that he or she is in imminent danger of death or great bodily harm.< The Law Offices of Mark L. VENOUS INSUFFICIENCY BY CHARLES S.C. GARNETTE, M.D., F.A.C.S. Approximately 25 million Americans suffer from venous reflux disease or venous insufficiency. Of these, approximately 15-20% of men, and 30-40% women experience severe complications such as bleeding, ulceration, unrelenting swelling of the legs. COMMON SYMPTOMS INCLUDE: • Varicose Veins • Pain • Swollen Legs • Heavy, Tired (fatigued), aching legs, relieved by sitting and leg elevation. • Skin changes and leg ulcers. Many individuals with varicose veins and spider veins do not understand the significance of these manifestations and that they may be from chronic venous insufficiency. Later in life, however, when severe complications, such as bleeding from ruptured varicosities, ulceration, and disfiguring skin changes, present themselves, the impact of the problem is suddenly more visible.

CAUSES OF VARICOSE VEINS ARE MULTIFACTORIAL:

Dr Garnette completed his medical education at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, then spent five years at the University of Rochester – Strong Memorial Hospital [New York] where he completed General Surgery Residency training. Following this, he went to the University of Massachusetts Medical Center where he trained in Vascular Surgery for two years and finally completed his training with an Endovascular Fellowship at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation [Cleveland, Ohio].

Whether the initial cause is genetics, pregnancy, prolonged standing, inadequate exercise, excessive weight, damaged or thrombosed (clotted) veins, the physiology of varicose veins is always the same. The valves in the superficial veins become damaged (or incompetent as referred to by physicians) and veins near the surface become stretched, distorted and dilated as a result of increased pressures within the veins. The treatment of varicose veins continues to evolve, and methods for treating this disease process with minimal interference in everyday function is a key component of modern day therapeutic interventions. Gone Urban Wild

Snap! Orlando 2012 will explore “Urban Wild” with imagery examining the juxtaposition and paradox of wildlife, urbanism and humanity. With exhibits featuring world renowned photographers including musician MOBY, Korean-American artist MIRU KIM, Japanese German duo MI-ZO (featured in this issue), Russian photographer Oleg Dou, Parisian fashion photographer Damien Blottiere, and New York Times reporter Ben Lowy, just to name a few… More that 55 photographers from over 20 countries will be on display in the 15,000 sq ft pop-up warehouse-gallery, which Snap! will occupy this year.“We like the raw and rough feel of this warehouse,” says Patrick Kahn, founder/producer, “with ‘Urban Wild’ we want to showcase that beneath every urban site, there once was, and still is… the wild!” The opening night will feature salon talks with some of the headlining artists, as well as music and entertainment throughout the space. The VIP lounge sponsored in part by Orlando Style, will feature complimentary drinks, catered hors d’oeuvres, an exclusive 3D projection room with photographer Cecil Stone, as well as a limited number of Moby’s “Destroyed” signed photography book and CD. Snap! will add fashionable flair to the second night of exhibition with an extravagant “Urban Wild” fashion show and installation curated by Fused Fashion, which will include bold fashion looks inspired by the imagery of Snap! 2012 international talents.

Photographer Zoren Gold and Japanese graphic designer/ illustrator Minori Murakami (aka MI-ZO) began their mutual creative journey in 2000. The idea behind this collaboration was to combine their expertise in different areas based on their mutual curiosity to discover the unexplored paths of creative imagery. ‘We hoped, together, to invent a new aesthetic in photographic imagery’ (MI-ZO in NY Arts Vol12 no 5/6). Reading through the two artists’ biographies, one realizes the power of innate artistic spirit and endowment. Although the duo are currently one of the most sought-after entities in the world of artistic photography, their partly selftaught talent as well as their continuous probing through the various forms of art, fashion and commerce, have resulted in their firmly establishing their personal creative signature in the world of photographic imagery. Zoren Gold, of German origin, crossed paths with the Japanese Minori Murakami in Los Angeles in 2000. At that time, both artists were experimenting through freelance photography and illustration. In 2002, the duo moved to Tokyo where they broadened their scope of creativeness to include a mix of photography, collages, drawings, computer graphics and handmade props. Today, MI-ZO have moved back to their creative homeland in Los Angeles, handling a large portfolio including the most prominent clients, editorials and exhibitions around the world. The most important ‘atout’ of their work is the fact that they manage to create commercially effective projects while being artistically free. ABOUT SANDEE PAWAN, FEATURED IN THIS ISSUE:

“We feel Orlando is ready to become a mega cultural center” says Kahn, “but the international attention has to be redirected from the amusement parks to what makes the city itself a vibrant place. Art plays a big role in bringing a local its cultural identity. Snap! is here to contribute to that development by bringing world renowned photographers and galvanizing the community.” ABOUT MI-ZO, FEATURED IN THIS ISSUE: “We hoped, together, to invent a new aesthetic in photographic imagery”

Race Horse FERRARI: F12BERLINETTA

Engine: 65-degree V12 :: 0-100 km/h : 3.1 sec

“The most powerful and high-performance Ferrari road car ever launched.” > The unveiling of the F12berlinetta ushers in a new generation of Ferrari 12cylinders in the form of a car that delivers unprecedented performance from an exceptional new engine, combined with innovative design that redefines classic themes along with extreme aerodynamics. The F12berlinetta, finished in an attractive new Rosso Berlinetta three-layer colour, represents the very cutting-edge of midfront-engined sports cars. This is, in fact, the most powerful and highperformance Ferrari road car ever launched thanks to the incredibly efficient engine – in terms of mechanical, combustion and fluiddynamics efficiency – which, together with advanced vehicle architecture, aerodynamics, components and electronic controls, guarantee unsurpassed driving involvement whatever the road or track. Ferrari’s traditional transaxle layout has been revolutionised to match the more extreme performance of the car. The wheelbase has been shortened and the engine, dashboard and seats have been lowered in the chassis, while the new layout of the rear suspension and gearbox enabled Ferrari’s engineers to make the rear volume of the car smaller. The overall result is a very compact car with a lower centre of gravity that is further back in the chassis, and a level of aerodynamic efficiency that sets new standards. Scaglietti, renowned for its expertise in aluminium materials and construction, designed an all-new spaceframe chassis and bodyshell using 12 different kinds of alloys, some of which have been used here for the first time in the automotive sector, and employing new assembly and joining techniques. This has resulted in a 20 per cent increase in structural rigidity while reducing weight to just 1525 kg (70 kg less than the previous V12 coupé) with an ideal distribution between the axles (54 per cent over the rear). The F12berlinetta’s 6262cc 65° V12 engine delivers unprecedented performance and revs for a naturally-aspirated 12-cylinder. Its

maximum power output is 740 CV which translates to a specific output of 118 CV/l. Torque reaches a peak of 690 Nm, 80 per cent of which is already available at just 2,500 rpm, and which provides an unrelenting surge of acceleration all the way to the 8,700 rpm limit. The engine is mated to the F1 dual-clutch transmission, which has closer gear ratios developed specifically for this car’s performance. The F12berlinetta boasts a weight-to-power ratio of just 2.1 kg/CV. Fuel consumption has been reduced by 30%, with CO2 emissions of just 350 g/km – figures which put the F12berlinetta at the top of the high-performance league. These results have been obtained by extensive research and development which focused on efficiencies of the whole vehicle: engine, aerodynamics, tyres and weights. Similarly excellent results have been obtained with the car’s aerodynamic development, thanks to the integration of the design process with extensive computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and lengthy testing in the wind tunnel. Downforce has been boosted by 76 per cent (123 kg at 200 km/h) while drag has been significantly reduced (the Cd is just 0.299). These results come courtesy of two new solutions. The first of these is the Aero Bridge which uses the bonnet to generate downforce by channelling air away from the upper part of the car to its flanks where it interacts with the wake from the wheel wells to decrease drag. The second is Active Brake Cooling, a system that opens guide vanes to the brake cooling ducts only at high operating temperatures, again reducing drag.

3.1 seconds and from 0 to 200 km/h in 8.5 seconds. It also completes a lap of the Fiorano circuit in 1’23”, faster than any other Ferrari road car. Benchmark performance and maximum driving involvement are guaranteed by immediate turn-in, with smaller steering wheel angles, and increased cornering speed. Stopping distances have also been drastically reduced. The design of the F12berlinetta is a result of the collaboration between the Ferrari Styling Centre and Pininfarina and is a perfect balance of uncompromising aerodynamics with harmonious proportions interpreting the typical elements of Ferrari’s frontengined V12 cars in an original and innovative way. A coupé with sleek, aggressive lines whose compact exterior dimensions conceal exceptional in-car space and comfort. The all-new Frau leather interior highlights the balance of advanced technology and sophisticated, handcrafted detailing. In the middle of the light and lean dashboard, there are new carbon fibre and aluminium air vents clearly inspired by the aeronautic field. The cabin has been optimised to ensure maximum usability of the interior space with additional luggage capacity behind the seats, which can also be easily reached thanks to the large aperture offered by the tail-gate. With the cockpit designed around the driver, typical of all Ferraris, the Human Machine Interface approach is emphasised, grouping all the major commands within immediate reach to guarantee maximum ergonomics for the most involving driving experience. <

The F12berlinetta’s impressive technical specifications are completed by Ferrari’s latest generation carbon-ceramic brakes (CCM3) and the evolution of the magnetorheological suspension control system (SCM-E). As is now traditional with all Ferraris, its control systems (E-Diff, ESP Premium, F1-Trac, and high-performance ABS) are all fully integrated. The result is that the new Prancing Horse 12-cylinder accelerates from 0-100 km/h in

> When a person wants their divorce, custody case or paternity case to be done the “right way, he or she goes to Wendy L. Aikin. She offers experience, wisdom, guidance and access to the best techniques for solving family problems without harming children, without wasting financial resources and without the anger and damage that so often infect divorce, custody or paternity cases. Wendy L. Aikin is a highly-regarded family law practitioner, well known to Central Floridians over the last 32 years of her practice. She has operated her own law firm,The Aikin Family Law Group, since 1995, working hand-in-hand with attorneys Brenda L. London and Andrew T. Windle. She has been recognized as a Super Lawyer from 2007-2012 by Florida Super Lawyer Magazine and a Best Lawyer for 2010-12 by Best Lawyers in America Magazine. She is also a certified State of Florida family law mediator. Although she has extensive experience litigating contested cases and she will still go to court if there is no other alternative, Wendy is now devoted to forging a healthier, less contentious path for divorcing couples in Central Florida. She made the conscious choice in 2007 to bring Collaborative Law as a dispute settlement method to her Central Florida community. Together with the help of a dedicated and insular board of directors, she scheduled nationally-recognized trainers to conduct local trainings in the collaborative law paradigm.

Thanks to her vision, The Collaborative Family Law Group of Central Florida now has a membership of in excess of 100 collaboratively-trained members, making it the largest such organization in the State of Florida. solve issues between them with the assistance of a collaborative team consisting of the lawyers for the parties, a neutral mental health professional and a neutral financial professional. The couple involved in the divorce, paternity action, or same sex couple split retain control and are empowered to make guided decisions in the best interests of their family long-term, in a private manner out of court, bolstered by a team of collaborative professionals. The family still obtains a final judgment signed by a judge, but without all of the legal wrangling and emotional devastation of a contested court case. Wendy has personally devoted hundreds of hours of her time and that of her firm each year to the cause, firmly believing that the interpersonal family issues inherent in divorce do not belong in the courtroom and that there is a better way. As the President of the local group, Wendy has spearheaded training of members and education of the general public in the hopes that, in hard economic times, with overcrowded court dockets, families will elect the kinder, gentler, more long-lasting collaborative model of dispute resolution. Skip is also not afraid to get his hands greasy and works on his bikes and old muscle cars. “My recent project was a 70’s Plymouth Duster.” The Duster is just the latest of several collector muscle cars he has owned and restored over the years. “It’s not just about how the car looks sitting there, it’s really about how it drives and sounds.” His riding experience and knowledge of car and motorcycle performance gives Skip an advantage that not all product liability attorneys share. Product cases can involve complex technical issues and involves working hand in hand with engineers and various technical experts. “I really enjoy the technical side of product cases. When it comes to defending a manufacturer’s product, there is no substitute for a complete understanding of how the product is designed and how it performs.”

> For Skip Eubanks, practicing law and riding motorcycles are intertwined. A partner with the litigation firm Rumberger, Kirk & Caldwell, he practices product liability defense and represents manufacturers like General Motors, Nissan, Hyundai, Polaris Industries and Harley-Davidson. Skip currently serves as Southern National Product Liability Counsel for Harley-Davidson and as Regional Counsel for Polaris Industries as well as Victory and Indian Motorcycles. Working with these major manufacturers allows Skip to litigate against many of the best and most distinguished attorneys in the country. What makes Skip an effective lawyer is that his personal interests coincide with some of the very products he defends. A motorcycle enthusiast since early his teens, Skip enjoys riding his HarleyDavidson Ultra Classic. “I raced Motocross when I was younger, then I had a few sport bikes, both of which were adrenaline rushes,” he adds. “Now it’s more about the ride, but that doesn’t mean that horsepower isn’t still important!”

But cars and motorcycles aren’t his only passions. A native Floridian, Skip owns a house in the Florida Keys and on any given weekend he leaves the road and hits the open water on one of his boats. “As a kid, my family spent a lot of time in the Keys and the Bahamas,” he said. “My father taught us how to run a boat and fish, so I bought a house in the Keys and spend as much time as I can on and in the water.” Skip also enjoys jumping into the water with his speargun to not only hunt grouper and snapper on the reef, but he also heads offshore to the blue water to hunt mahi and other big game fish. “I recently took a Free Diving Instructors International Course and was able to free dive over 66 feet.” He adds, “It was challenging, but the ability to hold your breath for three minutes makes spear fishing and grabbing lobsters much easier.” While Skip loves the challenges and rewards of practicing law, he says that there is more to life than the courtroom. “I always try to remember that the key to a happy life is work hard but play harder.” <

He is also the president and medical director of Associates in Dermatology: “Your Skin Cancer and Skin Care Specialists”, which has grown to 10 locations throughout Central Florida. Now, Dr. Steppie is the featured skin cancer ® expert at WebMD, where his helpful tips and resources are accessible on this leading health portal. And, earlier this year, the 2012 Skin Cancer Foundation Journal requested him to do an article on “Skin Cancer and the Gender Gap,” which will be published in May.

Michael Steppie, MD Photo by Steven Miller Read more at: StyleToMe.com

When asked why he volunteered to participate in these two national initiatives, Dr. Steppie replied, “Let’s not forget that skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with more than 3.5 million cases diagnosed annually. I was glad to accept. I’ve done my best to assist in skin cancer prevention in our Sunshine State, and it’s a privilege to reach out to a much wider audience. It’s about saving lives! People need to make changes in their daily ritual, especially when it comes to sun protection and skin care.” In March of this year, Dr. Steppie donated his time and expertise, as he does every year, to perform free skin cancer screenings for Skin Cancer Foundation’s Road to Healthy Skin Tour.

It is not surprising he has been honored with multiple awards, including the Distinguished Physician Recognition Award from the AMA (American Medical Association). Last year he received the “Compassionate Doctor” Award from patientschoice.org and this June will accept the “Physician of the Year” Award. Skin care is a passion with Dr. Steppie. Last year he formulated a premium daily sun protection, with the strongest antioxidants available. His superior physical blocking sunscreen protects from both UVA and UVB rays, while also preventing premature skin aging. Its success has encouraged him to introduce Steppie MD Dermaceuticals beginning this summer. “The first launch will be a cutting-edge, anti-aging cellular elixir in a unique airless dispenser,” Dr. Steppie explained. “It is intended to actively fight all visible signs of skin aging while boosting cellular regeneration. This potent serum will be 95% natural while containing no preservatives. Delivering results is my number one priority. Just as my patients come to me because they know they can trust me, and my expertise for their skin cancer, I think people will discover they can trust Steppie MD Dermaceuticals in the same way.” <

Over the course of the two-day event, Dr. Steppie and his staff found 25 suspected skin cancers and 38 pre-cancers on a total of 110 patients! For years this caring doctor has been a dedicated member of the prestigious Amonette

DON‘T MISS THE BEAT

> Preparing for a wedding is quite possibly the best time in a woman’s life. Women embrace their inner “girl power” as they shop for dresses, select accessories, celebrate a night out with the closest gal pals and bask in the glory of being treated like a queen. If brides had to choose a representative who embraced the total girl power package, then the title would go to Madonna. Who else can rock a wedding dress with white gloves while rolling around the top of a giant wedding cake belting out “Like a Virgin?” For nearly 30 years, Madonna has continued to reinvent herself and the pop music industry. She is just as relevant now as she was in 1983 when she released her debut album, Madonna, which produced hits like “Holiday” and “Lucky Star.” The album launched her into the music scene and popularized the dance-pop genre. While her first effort was impressive, it wasn’t until Like a Virgin came out that she earned worldwide recognition, although this was just as much for her catchy hooks and dance party anthems as it was due to the attention it received from moralists claiming the album promoted pre-marital sex and defiance of parenting. But this scrutiny would only fuel Madonna’s passion to continue pushing the envelope with her lyrics and lavish 80s rocker style, consisting of fishnets with skirts, lace gloves and jewelry with crucifix’s.

Madonna was becoming an icon for girls all over the world and “Material Girl” and “Get into the Groove” off her second effort were sexy, rebellious anthems for these girls. Madonna married actor Sean Penn during this time and dedicated her third studio album, True Blue to him. After proving that she wasn’t just a one-hit wonder, Madonna explored a more mature side of herself singing “Live to Tell” and “Papa Don’t Preach” which was about teenage pregnancy and abortion, which again caused controversy. She set out on the Blond Ambition Tour, which Rolling Stone called an “elaborately choreographed, sexually provocative extravaganza.” Her first documentary Truth or Dare debuted shortly

after and showed her on the tour and gave fans a glimpse into her provocative life. The Immaculate Collection was Madonna’s first greatest hits album and became the best selling compilation album in history for a solo artist. But the album got notoriety for it’s one of two new songs, “Justify my Love” which showed bondage, same sex kissing, nudity, and S&M. MTV banned the video from its network. However, something was obviously working because Madonna was at the top of the charts and on the radios all around the world. In between this CD and her fifth studio album, Erotica, Madonna launched Maverick, her entertainment company, as well as her first book, Sex. Madonna set out on tour once again to promote her latest album but rubbed the media and fans the wrong way with The Girlie Tour, which highlighted Madonna as a dominatrix singing alongside topless women. A stint on The David Letterman Show was the icing on the (not wedding) cake. It finally was time to settle down her image and make right with fans if she wanted to continue her success in the industry. Bedtime Stories debuted in 1994 and featured several ballads like “I’ll Remember,” “Take a Bow” and “Secret” showing her more sensitive side. As if releasing six studio albums in 10 years didn’t keep her busy enough, Madonna explored acting and found roles in the movies A League of Their Own, Dick Tracy and Evita, among several others. While emotionally and physically exhausting, her efforts were noticed and the performance earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for Evita, and an Academy award for best original song for “You Must Love Me.” During filming, Madonna also became pregnant with her daughter, Lourdes, whom she had with boyfriend Carlos Leon. Shortly after filming, Madonna focused on being a mother and found the practice of Kabbalah. Her next album Ray of Light was

a reflection of this new outlook and the “mystical aspects of life.” The album earned four Grammy nods and took home Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media for “Beautiful Stranger” which was featured in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. At the turn of the century, Madonna released her eighth studio album, Music, which like her previous album, had electronica elements, and pushed the envelope for futuristic sound. Stats show that she sold four million copies within the first 10 days and the album shot to number one in 20 countries. It was at this time that she fell in love with Guy Ritchie and had her second child, Rocco, in 2000. Following the Drowned World Tour, which featured her most recent album at the time, Madonna released “Die Another Day,” the title track for the latest James Bond movie donning the same name. Next up was the American Life album, however it did not do well amongst critics and fans and became her worst selling album to date. But she bounced back with her 10th album, Confessions of a Dance Floor, which featured a club-like DJ sound and earned her a Grammy Award for Best Electronic/Dance album. While working on the Raising Malawi initiative and helping fund an orphanage, Madonna fell in love with a little boy who was sick and eventually adopted him in 2006 with Ritchie. Her next album effort was Hard Candy and she collaborated with Justin Timberlake, Timbaland, Pharell Williams, and others. Her single with Timberlake “4 minutes” soared to the top of the charts. She embarked on the Sticky and Sweet Tour with Live Nation and it became the highest-grossing show by a solo artist ever. In the next two years, Madonna divorced Ritchie, adopted another boy from Malawi and released Celebration, her third greatest hits collection and ended the 2000s as the best-selling single artist of the decade.

Czerwinski’s Specialty Wine & Cheese

She’s off to a great start for earning that title this decade as well. As the headliner for the Super Bowl XLVI halftime show, Madonna proved she still has what it takes to be the Queen of Pop. Her new release of her 12th studio album, MDNA has also already faired well. She continues to push the envelope and rattle the norm with tracks like “Gang Bang” and “Girl Gone Wild.” Some critics haven’t liked this obvious “hard girl image” but fans continue to support the legend.

been out for a full workday or a 20-minute jog, our dogs act like they haven’t seen us in years and have never been more excited about anything, not even steak leftovers, just to see you again. Think about this: You’ve just heard some sad news. Either you’ve been through a break up, fired from your job, or gone through anything that might evoke tears; your dog is sitting with you, licking your face trying to make you feel better. This type of attention is nearly impossible to resist, and soon enough you’re up and out, going for a walk with the sun on your face and your best friend wagging his tail in gratitude. This combination of attentiveness, love, and exercise is a surefire way to improve any situation.

Dog Days Are Over By: Alexa Cawley Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> You’ve had a long day. Your boss was unhappy with your report, there was an accident blocking the road on your way home from work, and you’re exhausted. But the minute you put your key in the door, you can hear your dog yelping in excitement to see you. You see his happy face, wagging tail, and all of those bad feelings from earlier have diminished. Within moments you can’t wait to get out the door and take him for a walk. This quick emotional lift is very common among pet owners. According to recent studies conducted by veterinarians and psychologists, having a pet can help tremendously with emotional and physical stress. Pets give you a reason to come home at night and wake up in the morning, and this responsibility helps to structure our lives - which can become very chaotic. The frequent walks in the fresh air help to clear your mind and give you periodic breaks that you come to relish. > So you or one of your friends has decided to take the leap? The first question on all your friends’ minds is, where are we going to have the bachelor party? You can hear everyone quoting movies and saying everything that happens in Vegas…blah, blah, blah. That is all well and good, but let’s just see how much fun we can have in our own backyard here in Orlando. The potential for waking up with a half empty tub of butter, a unicycle, a small donkey and a passed out clown with a frowney face is still there if you wanna go that route. But if it was my job as best man to throw the bachelor party in Orlando this would be how it went down. First off, if we have the fellas flying in from out of town we have to set up a home base. The Grand Bohemian Hotel makes the perfect home base for the evening ahead. Not only is it a swanky place to stay, it is in the heart of downtown. After getting the troops together we start our evening at ONE80 Grey Goose Lounge. It is the perfect place to look down on downtown Orlando and make our plan of attack. It also allows us to imagine the night of the debauchery that lies at our feet as we help

STYLETOME.COM

our friend make this night one to remember before the big leap. The ability to sit in VIP and have bottle service is sure to set this evening on the correct path. It is time for us to descend on “The City Beautiful.” There are many options downtown but one of my favorites is Rok Room. It has a very chic look while the music is exactly what you think it would be. The rock music is mixed in with the style that this place exudes and is seamless. It is important for the bachelor to let go and unwind with his buddies, and this place allows just that. Temptation may come in droves with the ladies that walk in thru that door but I am sure our bachelor is steadfast. If lounge hopping is the plan then there is no shortage of places to go. May I recommend Club 23, Ember or Stardust Lounge. Any of these places will take great care of you and the eye candy is never ending, hands off bachelor. If the mode for the night is drinking and full on craziness then I recommend Mako’s to set the tone. Loud, packed and plenty of booze flowing is the theme here. Oh and the girls working there wearing practically nothing will help guarantee your buddy is

getting all the ‘impure’ thoughts out of the way. If rubbing elbows with people at local watering holes is on the agenda then head To Casey’s or Latitudes rooftop bar. As the night progresses towards the haze and drunken toasts of congratulations and impending doom for the soon to be hitched, plan the ‘wind down’ wisely. While many bachelor parties will have thoughts of strip clubs and dancers dancing in their heads, not a bad thing, however, I have an alternative. It is time to reflect on times had and storytelling with this intimate group of friends. The Bösendorfer Lounge will make a good ending to the night. The weekend usually has the place filled with the sounds of acid jazz from some top-notch DJs. This is of course allows you to stumble courageously back up to your room, or somebody’s room at least. This night is just an opinion of one barfly. If you still need to wake up and wonder why that frowney-faced clown is sleeping on the floor while you wear one of his big red shoes and ponder what the hell happened?! That is your prerogative. Just remember all the fun and memories of stories to come – it’s all good. <
