his time of year is such a buzz of excitement, not only because it is the festive season but also because the thought of a new year around the corner brings in-focus goals, hope for the future and an abundance of anticipation as we look forward.

It's not Deja Vu you're getting; he was and still is the pop icon from Steps we all danced with growing up (I did anyway), not a 'tragedy', just 'The last thing on my mind..'

Okay, I'll stop now, but Ian was part of many of our lives growing up, and now, as he embraces his other talent, painting, the public gets to see his other passion. His incredible artwork collection is being showcased in Cardiff's Adamo Gallery. It was a pleasure to get familiar with Ian; you can read the full interview (P9).

From Popstar to Painter Extraordinaire 10 Style of the city

IAN H WATKINS Ian H Watkins, known as 'H' from Steps, cemented himself as a 90's to early 00's pop icon. Here, he shares with Style of the city his incredible journey into popworld and how his love for art has transformed him into one of the most exciting art talents.

His latest collection is being shown at Adamo Gallery Cardiff, a homage to his Welsh roots and where his many fans can see his extraordinary pieces, another extension of his creative flair transformed onto canvas.

When did you first realise that you wanted to be a performer?

From a very young age, performing has always been an escape for me. I had such a terrible time at school with being bullied, but my local theatre group is what got me through that. I used to go there every night after school to be with like-minded people who didn't care that I was different. They embraced, lifted, and helped me find my confidence in a world that wasn't very kind then.

What are some of your fondest memories of being part of Steps?

We have done so many incredible things over the years that pinpointing something specific is difficult. I got to travel in Britney's private jet with her during the early years of Steps. We met Whitney Houston at the MTV Music Awards, and I shouted, "Hi Whitney!". She didn't have a clue who we were. During our summer shows last year, my boys attended the shows and watched whilst on stage. Seeing them take my world in and begin to understand it is something that will never leave me. Recently, we headlined Brighton Pride which was a big one for me. That gig is the best of the best. The entire weekend rained, but the sun came out for our set. The Gay Gods were blessing Steps that day.

COVER FEATURE How did you get into the group Steps?

Take us back to the beginning.

There was an audition for Steps in The Stage newspaper. The same day, I auditioned for a cruise ship. I got both jobs, but I accepted the Steps gig.

My friends and family thought I was insane for turning down the opportunity to travel the world on the ship for a line-dancing pop band.

How has fame affected you?

Everybody says this, but I don't think it has.

There have been learning curves over the years, as we were so young when we came onto the scene. Twenty-five years is a long time to be in the public eye - only some things will be perfect.

I'm only human. However, as a 47-year-old man with children and a life outside of the public eye, my feet are firmly on the ground. I know what's important, what deserves my time and what's real.

Kindness and respect are essential. My boys are my life, not "fame".

What are some of your favourite memories growing up in Wales?

My best memories are with my family. Going for amazing walks with my Grandad and my family dog. We walked everywhere. Over the Rhigos, the waterfalls in Neath and Aberavon Beach, to name a few. These places definitely inspire me when I paint.

IAN H WATKINS When did you start painting?

Tell us about your latest collection.

I have painted my whole life but just kept it to myself. It has always been my passion. I was accepted into Art College, but the success of Steps took me in a completely different direction.

Now that my boys are older and Seps is taking a well-deserved rest, I've found time to pick up my paintbrushes, and it feels so good. I know this is exactly what I am supposed to be doing. It feels good.

Wales is always the inspiration. The landscapes are so diverse—the seaside, waterfalls, valleys, mountains. I am spoilt for choice. Now my boys are a bit older; I can paint again—Hiraeth - a belonging. I feel like I've come home.

What painter has inspired you, or where do you derive your inspiration?

I have many artists that I love and inspire me.

Welsh artists I adore are Shani Rhys, Sharni Rhys James, Peter Prendergast and Maurice Cockrill to name a few.

You have been a vital figure in Wales regarding the LGBTQ movement; what advice would you give someone struggling with their sexuality?

I would say to be kind and compassionate to yourself. You aren't alone, even though it can sometimes feel that way. There is a community that will embrace and support you. Take each day at a time. You are perfect as you are.

What would you tell a young Ian H Watkins?

Don't do anything differently. Don't listen to your career adviser. Keep doing what you're doing.

Follow your heart, and it will all be okay.

Jewellery brand Clogau launches Merthyr Boutique with help of BBC star Gethin Jones It’s been a busy time for popular TV personality and long-standing Clogau brand ambassador Gethin Jones, who wielded the giant scissors at the opening ceremony for the Welsh jewellery brand’s latest Boutique in Merthyr Tydfil.

Aside from cutting ribbons on Clogau’s ever-expanding roster of bricks-and-mortar Boutiques – which now stands 14-strong in addition to two outlet stores – the Morning Live presenter has been filming for the company’s Christmas 2023 TV advertisement, which can now be seen on commercial channels throughout the festive season.

great fun filming with Clogau's creative team, and it made an interesting change of pace from live television. We shot two ads in two days, which was quite intense, but after my recent 24-hour Red Nose Day danceathon anything else seems a piece of cake.

It’s the first instalment of a series of narrativedriven ads which will continue their story around Valentine’s Day and beyond, and feature Gethin as the TV dad who must deal with the arrival of his screen daughter’s new love interest.

Appearing alongside fellow BBC presenter Justine Jones at the opening of the Merthyr store at Cyfarthfa Shopping Park, Gethin said: “It was 14 Style of the city

Visual Merchandising Manager Sonja Adams came across the idea in Germany. She said: “I was immediately struck by how the interactivity was engaging visitors, and I couldn’t wait to try something similar in Clogau’s stores. The Merthyr Boutique is the first to get a Clogau Storybook, but we’ll be introducing them in some of our other stores very soon!”

It isn’t only the brand’s bricks-and-mortar stores which are continually developing. It’s been a busy period for the designers working behind the scenes on new jewellery, especially with Christmas on the horizon – traditionally the firm’s busiest time of year.

A Beautiful Mind Cardiff Beauty Event Honours Memory of Tom Hurst

Makeup and beauty enthusiast Tom Hurst tragically passed away earlier this year.

Friends and family are now organising a special evening to raise awareness of mental health and suicide.

An immensely talented beauty writer and beauty enthusiast, Tom Hurst even courted the attention of renowned makeup artist Bobbi Brown, who called Tom directly, asking if he could write for her beauty column. A rare talent, Tom was on the cusp of a tremendous career, but it was his battle with his mental health that kept him from truly realising his potential and a battle he sadly lost this year.

Here, the organisers share with Style of the city how they aim to keep Tom’s memory alive and share more about the event.

Our beautiful, special friend Tom Hurst, loved by many and sadly passed away this year, left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Our mission is to raise awareness of mental health and suicide, honouring Tom by bringing together luxury businesses and Cardiff’s leading beauty and wellness brands.

Almost a year after losing Tom, we come together in his memory to honour him through his love of luxury beauty. Raising money for Jacob Abraham Foundation - a Cardiff-based charity that aims to help prevent suicide through direct intervention with vulnerable people. We also hope to raise awareness of mental health/suicide issues, promote positive mental health and support people bereaved through suicide in South Wales.

The event will be a beauty extravaganza at the Parkgate Hotel. Canopes and drinks on arrival, dinner, entertainment and luxury raffle prizes to be won throughout the night. No evening would be complete without entertainment, and there will be plenty of music, live DJs along with some very special performances.

Staying Fabulous this Winter with the SPECTRUM GIRLS Hi everyone Thanks for picking up this issue of Style of the city.

Winter has always been one of our favourite seasons, we love the fashion, the cosy nights, and the comforting food…plus of course all the fabulous newness that hits the shops. There are two moods for both of us during winter, either we’re ‘in in’ or ‘out out’ so we try and make the best of both, the time to be merry and dress up and the relaxed nights in some chic PJ’s with a glass of wine. Plus, it’s our busiest time of year with Spectrum so we’re currently favouring the nights in when we can.

Our other favourite thing about this time of year is spending more time with our family and we really enjoy buying each other presents. This year we have set a budget, so we don’t go overboard, which means we have to look a little harder for something special. We also do a secret Santa in work and the budget is £10 so there are some gift ideas from us in our pages this issue to suit every budget.

Hopefully this inspiration will take one thing off your to-do list this season and free up some extra time for that glass of wine and some time to chill.

alking past the beautiful independent shops of the High Street, one brand, Jon Ian, stands out in particular as a buzzing beacon of energy, oozing with the latest fashion and spearheaded by a hugely talented business owner, Esther. Founded in 1971 by David Thomas, Daughter Esther Hithcock has continued the formidable success of the brand and shares with Style of the city why Jon Ian has stood the test of time and gives advice to other budding entrepreneurs.

Take us back to the beginning of Jon Ian, where it all started.

Jon Ian was founded in 1971 by my father, David Thomas. Many would remember him from our flagship store in Morgan Arcade; he was quite the character! A farmer's son who found himself under Kurt Geiger's mentorship on Bond Street, London, during the 60s. My father returned home with great ambition and established his own fabulous brand, Jon Ian. He always had an eye for colour and Style, something that I have carried with me, and to this day, Jon Ian is a haven of colour and Style!

What would you attribute your success to?

Since the pandemic we altered our website and created regular fresh content on our social media page. This investment into our Instagram page in particular, saw us nominated as finalists in the annual Drapers Social Media Awards and helped us engage with more customers who thankfully have become regular shoppers. For us evolving and going with the times has seen us as a constant and trusted figure on the High Street. We don't take ourselves seriously and always have lots of fun!

What are some of your favourite things about Cowbridge?

I love Cowbridge, having lived here for many years and had a boutique on High Street for over 34 years. It's nice to belong to a community. The High Street has some truly fantastic shops, with gorgeous brands, making it great for a day out shopping!

There are also some yummy places to stop for lunch, like The Bear Hotel or Penny Farthing.

What I love in particular about Cowbridge is the sense of community spirit, camaraderie and warmth, which has made it a wonderful place to grow my business.

What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs?

Hmm, what advice would I give... Do not be afraid to take risks and work hard, girls!

We've been through recessions, blackouts in the '70s, and even a global pandemic!! It's sheer grit that gets you through, but I promise it's always brighter on the other side.

" We are all passionate about interior design, and we thoroughly enjoy every project we take on," added Charlotte. "One of our favourite recent projects was for a client building their forever home. They wanted the space to encompass modern luxury with characterful farmhouse decals as it was the home's main bathroom, so it had to be both functional and fabulous. We took inspiration from the architectural elements of the building and wanted to ensure the breathtaking view overlooking Chepstow racecourse was unspoilt."

During the home survey, the design team decided to use the large central window as the focal point of the room and harmoniously positioned the walk-in shower and roll-top bath on either side. The room was divided into separate working zones and the toilet and vanity on the adjacent wall. The client then customised the finishes and opted to paint the vanity dove grey with white stone worktops. “ Our team often incorporates natural materials into our designs to harmonise inside the bathroom with outside in nature,” continued Holly. “We advised this client to work with a stylish neutral colour

scheme and mix materials to achieve the traditional-modern bathroom requested. The wall panelling around the room's perimeter, painted in soft beige, added subtle detail and character to the design.

We also added warm white LED spotlights and recessed strip lighting in the alcoves to enhance the luxurious ambience. We believed this would provide the perfect mood lighting for our client to relax and unwind in their new bathroom."

How did you first meet?

It's, unfortunately, not a very romantic story; We met through a mutual friend on a night out.

Nothing happened immediately, but a few months later, we started bbm'ing (that's how long ago it was), and the rest is history.

How long were you together before you got engaged?

13 years. We met when we were young; I was just 17, so we were in no rush to get married. We bought our first home and got a dog (our pride and joy, Peanut), and then Simon proposed on a trip to Norway. We were on a reindeer farm in the snow, and it was magical!

What was your wedding theme?

Timeless with a modern touch. We wanted to look back in years to come and not regret any decisions; this influenced everything from the flowers (white roses) to the groomsmen's suits (tuxes). As for the colour scheme, I opted for green - I'm not a huge fan of colour, but Simon and I are big nature lovers, so it felt like the perfect choice.

Where did you get married?

Tell us about the venue...

We got married at the Coed-YMwstwr Hotel. We visited many venues, but something about this venue being 5 minutes from our first home felt right. It's a Victorian mansion on a wooded hillside.

It also has a beautiful panoramic glasshouse, which complemented our timeless/modern aesthetic.

What did you wear? Tell us about your gown....

I wore the Seraphine gown by the designer Elysee from All About Eve. I went to several bridal shops and tried on what felt like hundreds of dresses! I was both indecisive and lapping up the experience.

When I tried 'the' dress on, my friends and family all cried - that's how I knew it was the one.

How did your dress make you feel?

The dress made me feel incredible.

I felt feminine and confident as if the dress was made for me to wear.

It's a Victorian mansion on a wooded hillside. It also has a beautiful panoramic glasshouse, which complemented our timeless/ modern aesthetic.

WEDDINGS What now? Breathe...

Award-winning wedding planner and venue stylist Paula Burns helps you take the anxiety out of your planning.

Let's talk about that anxious feeling you have linked to being able to micro-manage everything for your big day. After all, you have been responsible for booking every supplier, making every decision, and knowing exactly how you want your day to pan out.

Fast forward to a few weeks before your wedding day, and you are feeling pretty satisfied that you've done a good job, and you are looking forward to it all coming together.

So I have a list of questions that I am always armed with, and a process of analysis which helps me to narrow down the great and the not so great venue offerings. To go through them all would be impossible in one article, but here are four questions and the considerations behind them which will help you make better decisions: However, there is one big problem.

You can't access your venue to set up the day before your wedding. This means you have to hand over your instructions to someone who is less invested in your vision and has little time to really 'get inside your head' and understand what's important to you.

This is huge.

I know this is huge because, as a wedding planner, I often get last-minute SOS calls from anxious brides-to-be, asking for my set-up and wedding day management services – I've had a busy few months this autumn!

Although I love to offer these services, I know that the later I get involved, the more challenging the task becomes. This is mainly because limited time means that things can slip through the net and with all the best intentions, this could leave you feeling hugely deflated.

So, what can you do if you don't have a wedding planner?

• Let others into your plans. Choose a wedding buddy that you can trust – ideally, this should be someone who won't go rogue on you in favour of a good time on your special day.

• Get written feedback about everything and keep clear notes – Emails, WhatsApp messages, letters. These are all important to log in a summary document and file the originals away.

• Make it easy to hand over your instructions - If you are the only one who understands the dynamics of what is agreed upon, you have a problem.

• Do your handover at least a week before your wedding – I know this sounds like a big decision, especially if you are someone who finds it hard to let go, but trust me, this is the right thing to do. The last thing you need is to anxiously alter decorations or favours or give directions to suppliers in the last few days leading up to your wedding. If all your notes are accessible, your designated person can handle that.

Finally, enjoy your day.

Resign from the wedding management role you adopted months before (sometimes years before!) and trust the process.

Questions: How long have you been in dentistry? And why did you get into it? Over 25 years. I got into it as the cad/cam digital side of dentistry was just beginning and it was very exciting to bring that to life. Fezaan Gatrad Having qualified as a dentist in 2010 from King College London, Dr Fezaan Gatrad has taken great pleasure in caring for his patients.

Immediately after his foundation year of training and obtaining his Diploma of Membership of the Joint Dental Faculties of England (MJDF RCS), he was accepted to The University of Warwick, completing a Diploma in Implant Dentistry in 2014.

In 2016 he graduated with a Master in Clinical Dentistry with distinction from BPP University, having received the outstanding achievement award while studying Implant Dentistry (MClinDent Implant).

More recently, in 2018, Fezaan completed an Advanced Surgical Masters in Bone Regeneration under internationally famous and highly respected Professor Istvan Urban.

Shekira Johnson, world-renowned fitness expert and founder of Turn'd Up Fitness, has come up with a 30-day challenge to target both your physical fitness and emotional well-being. Rewind seven years: I was depressed and anxious; working in jobs I hated, dreading the next bill landing on my doormat. Partying, overeating, not taking care of myself – I was in a rut. My heart lay in acting and dance - I had trained at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama - but my ambitions seemed far out of reach. One day, I made the decision to pivot and train to be a fitness instructor and that was it – the start of my addiction to everything fitness!

Before long I had 22 different fitness qualifications under my belt (I never do things by halves!) but something was still missing. One day Work by Rihanna came on my car radio as I was driving to teach a gym class. That was my lightbulb moment – how cool would it be to start a class that combined dance, fitness and the best R&B and dancehall music – the same tunes you dance to in clubs? I couldn't stop thinking about it. I sought out my dance school friend Leighton

Wall and Jalessa Lammy and we worked on the choreography to Work together. From there everything just flowed and I launched my very first Turn’d Up Fitness class. In America ‘Turn’d Up’ means getting hyped, having fun, letting loose. A perfect name for what I’d created.

Before long, word spread. Turn’d Up became popular very quickly and we had queues of people from as far away as Bristol waiting to attend our Penarth class. Other gyms around the UK and even as far as Dubai started taking notice and requesting classes. It was time to train other instructors.

That Turn’d Up glow Turn’d Up is now a global fitness brand. I’ve grown it from the ground up with no business experience and I’m so proud of it. What is it about Turn’d Up? Obviously there’s the hottest music and routines, and the fact it’s an incredible all-over workout – the calorie burn is insane – but it ignites confidence in women like no other class. If I could bottle that Turn’d Up feeling I’d be a billionaire.

Newcomers start off shy, sticking to the back of the class thinking ‘what the hell is happening?!

Why am I even here, I can’t dance!’ But then the lights are off, the disco lights on, and they let go in a friendly, empowering judgement-free zone.

And after a few classes those newcomers are at the front, knowing all the moves, loving life, and they have their shine back. It’s amazing to see.

During the pandemic I also launched Turn’d Up On Demand, an online portal where anyone can learn the routines. It’s perfect for building up confidence at home or whenever you need that Turn’d Up fix.

I have been fortunate to visit several times, dashing in between meetings picking up their sumptuous fresh salads (chicken Caesar tastes divine). I recently checked out their presso therapy treatment and popular infrared sauna. If you are anything like me, making time for yourself is an endless juggling act; this time, I took the plunge, promptly putting my phone away as I lay on the ever-so-comfortable chairs, which act more like a cosy bed.

Pressotherapy takes compression to the next level. The technology uses pulsated, sequential pneumatic compression delivered via leg boots similar to a large blood pressure cuff, which features air chambers attached to a control unit and pump. These leg boots provide sequential and pulsating compression to a particular area in a rhythmic motion., systematically enhancing blood. The session itself took 40 minutes, and almost straight away, I felt invigorated. The serene surroundings and attentive staff at the hub added to my experience. Founders Tessa and Rico have created an atmosphere of tranquillity; as soon as you enter the hub, your wellbeing takes centre stage, and the familiarity and kindness of the team automatically puts you at ease. It's not only the treatments at the hub but their selection of hot drinks, including CBD-infused hot drinks, fresh smoothies and their range of healthy snacks via their conscious cafe all adding to your self-care experience.

Commercial Art Visionary Zoë Allen Shares Her Creative Journey with Style of the City Identity is everything.

I'm the Founder of Artistic Statements, a multidisciplinary art consultancy specialising in bespoke, site-specific art installations for internal and external commercial spaces.

These vary from 2D graphics/illustrations and artistic architectural/interior features to digital media and public art sculptures. I represent a multitude of creatives, artists, designers and makers, and I manage the entire process from artistic brief design development stages to fabrication, delivery and installation.

I started the business to connect clients with interesting spaces to artists with interesting ideas. The idea of providing creatives with interesting canvases excited me. I knew there was a symbiotic relationship - they both work with how humans connect and interact with space, and I could help create a bridge between them both. I understand client objectives, commercial requirements, and the artist's creative process and intent. Not everyone can do it, but it comes naturally to me, and I love providing value to both parties. Artists are provided with large walls, atriums and sometimes an entire space or building to integrate their artistic ideas, and the client receives iconic artworks that activate their spaces and create a talking point that promotes conversation. The artworks brand the space, and we all know how important identity is.

Innumerable new buildings and developments are popping up in every city, so standing out from the crowd is an ongoing battle but an excellent challenge for a creative.

How do you inject personality to express identity yet remain harmonious and cohesive to the interior design and architecture? A considerable part is through storytelling; It doesn't always have to be positive (you're unlikely to win everyone over). But creating a memorable space is half the battle, and - there's no such thing as bad publicity.

Recent projects include: • 78 St James Street is a Grade II* listed building with highly decorative heritage spaces dating back nearly 200 years. Transformed sympathetically, the artwork within needed to complement the historic finishes and murals whilst bringing the space into the modern era and appealing to all building users.

• The Rowe, a 160,000 sqft office redevelopment in Whitechapel – offers a nod in homage to the heritage of the building and the neighbourhood. Situated opposite Whitechapel Gallery and in the heart of East London, One of these is a wrap-around artwork on the terrace of the sixth floor – the top floor of the former building – by Yinka Ilori MBE that has been designed to reflect the long and varied textile traditions of the local community and can be seen from ground level.

• Graphic Rewilding Westfield - Westfield London's collaboration with the artists presented an innovative and playful approach to 'bring the outside in’, and encourage urban environments to connect with nature whilst simultaneously improving mental health and wellbeing. Graphic Rewilding's latest installation, their most ambitious and largest yet, comprises numerous eight-metre-high panels that are 1.5 square km of everchanging maximalist wildflower meadow-scapes, which wraps around the walls of the vast circular atrium of level one of The Village. www.artisticstatements.co.uk Style of the city 87

BBC Morning Live Presenter and Clogau ambassador Gethin Jones, along with BBC & QVC presenter Justine Jones were on hand to cut the ribbon, with Managing Director Ben Roberts. A fantastic evening which saw Welsh fashion designer and Merthyr Tydfil's very own Julien Macdonald share his support.
