Mazda MX-5 | refining a winning formula

The updated Mazda MX-5 sees Mazda's awardwinning sports car receive an exterior design change for the first time since the launch of the current generation MX-5 in 2015. The subtle changes include a new LED headlight design that now incorporates the daytime running lights, while the rear LED lights have also been redesigned. A new Aero Grey paint colour has been added to the MX-5 line-up, as well.

The eight-model range features four Roadster and four RF models and a choice of Prime-Line, ExclusiveLine and Homura trim grades. Prime-Line cars are powered by the 132ps 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G engine, while Exclusive-Line can be chosen with either the 1.5-litre or the 184ps 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G engine. The range-topping Homura is exclusively matched to the 184ps unit.

As before, 2.0-litre cars feature a front strut brace, limited-slip differential, and Bilstein dampers as standard; however, the latest MX-5 features a new Asymmetric Limited Slip Differential. A cam mechanism has been added to the conical clutch, which is lightweight, compact, and highly durable. The cam angle is set differently for the deceleration and acceleration side, thereby achieving optimal limiting force of slip during both actions. Strengthening

Over more than three decades and across four generations, the Mazda MX-5 has always been the benchmark pure lightweight sports car, with driver engagement at the centre of its appeal. This Jinba Ittai philosophy – of driver and machine working in perfect harmony - is at the heart of every Mazda, none more so than the Mazda MX-5. The latest Mazda MX-5 continues to deliver pure open-top driving pleasure while retaining its core values of agility, lightweight and finely balanced handling.

On Exclusive-Line and Homura models, the new Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) track driving mode avoids intervention until a later parameter to deliver a more dynamic yet secure drive experience with first-time track drivers in mind. Continuing the MX-5's fine-tuning, the response of the accelerator has been improved to deliver a more accurate throttle application, while the electric power steering has been adjusted and steering rack friction reduced to provide an even more natural and fluid response. The aim was to further enhance the sense of oneness with the car and connection with the road that the MX-5 has always been famed for.

The updated Mazda MX-5 continues the winning formula that has seen more than 25,000 fourth-generation MX-5s sold in the UK since its launch in 2015. Commenting on the latest Mazda MX-5, Mazda UK Managing Director Jeremy Thomson said, "When it comes to driver engagement, the current generation MX-5 has established itself as a benchmark sports car, and with the latest Mazda MX-5 we continue to offer one of the most exciting and satisfying to drive cars money can buy."

Adding, "Our engineers created a sports car that incorporates our ground-breaking Skyactiv technology, modern safety, and superb efficiency with the driverfocused enjoyment for which the MX-5 is loved. February 2025 marked 36 years since the first-generation Mazda MX-5 was revealed at the 1989 Chicago Motor Show and is produced at Mazda's Ujina plant in Hiroshima. With over 135,000 of these being sold in the UK, the place the MX-5 holds in the hearts of UK sports car fans is clear.

Our brand-new columnist, Emma Meese, is a journalist, content creator, program maker, producer, director, and social media consultant for the BBC, with a career spanning over 30 years. In her column, Emma shares some of life's most difficult transitions and aims to inspire others to live their best lives fully.

Why you should live your life in colour…

Five years ago, all our lives looked very different as we were living through a global pandemic.

During that time, my life changed dramatically; after almost 20 years together, my husband left our marriage. I didn't see it coming, and suddenly, a whole new chapter of my life was foisted upon me.

While the rest of the world had almost ground to a halt, mine felt like it was spinning out of control.

Without the physical support of others, due to restrictions to prevent the spread of Covid 19, I was suddenly navigating life on my own as a peri-menopausal single parent.

Life was scary, and the path ahead was uncertain. One day, I realised that maybe this new chapter wasn't one to be feared but rather one to be embraced.

I was determined this would not be the story that defined me. Rather than focus on it as an ending, I reframed it as a beginning and asked myself, could this potentially be the start of an exciting new life?

Slowly, one baby step at a time, I began trying new things and exploring new places. Each one sparking joy, anticipation, adrenaline or excitement.

It started with a mini zip wire at a campsite in Devon. I was terrified and cried as I let go of the tree I was clinging on to.

Never in a million years did I think that just a few years later I would be doing the fastest zipline in the world at ZipWorld in North Wales!

To keep the momentum going and to have positive things to focus on, I created a list of fifty things to do before I turned 50.

We are so lucky to live in such a vibrant city, rich with entertainment and culture.

The beautiful green spaces brought peace when I needed to walk and clear my head, and the rest of the city and surrounding areas offered plenty of opportunities to tick activities off my list.

Despite not being a fan of the water, I've discovered I love paddle boarding, especially at Llanishen Reservoir. I have a newfound love for bottomless brunches (my favourites are at Browns, Aura at the Coal Exchange and Groove N Graze by Lamerica at the Hilton).

Cardiff's impressive choice of theatres and venues makes it easy to attend many concerts and shows, something I rarely did before. Now, on my mission to make as many memories as possible, I'm a regular at gigs and festivals. We go to the annual

family-friendly In It Together Festival in Margam, taking more friends with us every year. When I'm not chasing adventures, my favourite way to unwind is a spa session at the Outdoor Sauna at Candleston Woods. I love sitting in the hot tub under a canopy of trees, especially if it's raining.

If you'd have told me five years ago, when I was frozen with fear, that I would go paragliding, shark diving, desert quad biking, have a tattoo, tow a caravan and go viral on Lad Bible, I would never have believed you. Now, with the help of our beautiful city, I'm proud to be able to truly say that I'm finally living my life in colour.

Bring on Summer!

Before you go shopping for a completely new summer wardrobe, take a moment to check your closet first. You might be surprised by what you already own. After all, you chose the items in your wardrobe for a reason. However, you may be missing some essential pieces to create fabulous new outfits. Alternatively, your existing items might just need fresh styling to add some newness and individuality to your look.

If you feel you've lost your style mojo in recent years, it's helpful to take stock and gain clarity on the colours, styles, clothing lines and shapes that showcase you and give you confidence and joy in how you look every day. For some, Summer can be a challenging time to dress as we peel back the layers, leaving you feeling vulnerable and exposed.

However, it's also an opportunity to enjoy how you look so here are a few tips for looking and feeling your best this Summer;

Summer is the perfect time for embracing colour. From sea green to primrose yellow, the perfect colours will ensure you look radiant and uplifted. Now is the time to try out that pumpkin dress, sugar pink waistcoat or that turquoise gingham blouse. You can start in a small way by adding a pop of colour or print with an accessory, such as a bag

or silk scarf. Remember to add the colour to an area of your body you feel most confident about.

Next, figure out what you are missing to complete outfits to avoid adding duplicates to your wardrobe. Once you have your list, you can start shopping for the missing pieces. Whether that's summer dresses or tops, skirts or shorts, consider your cost per wear instead of the upfront cost. Investing in pieces you are going to wear often is key. This works the other way, too, for occasion dressing. Invest in your everyday summer wardrobe instead of outfits you are just going to wear once on holiday. Instead, consider renting or buying second-hand for these occasions.

Consider where you shop to update your wardrobe. This is where many women go wrong. Think quality over quantity as considered purchases are much more likely to stand the test of time.

Lastly, summer resort wear is a time to experiment and up your anti; you're outside your normal environment, so it's the perfect opportunity to try out new looks, step outside your comfort zone a little and see how good you feel. You never know you may bring your new style back home with you!

This year, I made a promise to prioritise my health and wellness. As a busy mum and business owner, finding balance in any area of my life is a challenge, especially when it comes to wellness. When I heard about Mor a Sawna, I knew I had to try it. This beachfront sauna is unlike anything I've ever experienced. Located at the base of the pathway leading into Jacksons Bay, this wellness haven is the perfect place to start or end your day.

It's Sunday morning, and I'm excited to try it out for myself. As I walk toward the beach and enter the gated area of the sauna, I'm warmly greeted

by the owner, Kath, who kindly shows me where to change.

What strikes me most about Mor A Sawna is its location and the incredible views. Once inside, the scenery is breathtaking, overlooking both the serene harbour and the beach, with stunning views of the sky and cliffs.

The deep warmth envelops me, cleansing every pore, while the calming water views help my body relax immediately. I focus on my breath as I engage in breathwork, taking in the beautiful surroundings.

After 55 minutes, with the occasional short break in between, I headed to the shower station and promptly cooled down. The fresh sea air that greeted me after a session felt incredible, and to top it off, I decided to head into the sea for a cold dip.

My Verdict:

Mor a Sawna is an amazing wellness spot located in the perfect area. The views and sauna experience boosted my energy, and I slept better than ever. Whether you are just starting your wellness journey or are already fully engaged in it, you must try this place for yourself. I highly recommend.

Style of the City wanted to learn about the behind-the-scenes of this venue, his top wedding day tips, and his vision for a dream wedding day.

So, Greg, let's start with what you think is the best part about your job?

What's not to love! But if I had to choose, it would be either the final pep talk I have with each half of the couple just before they walk into the ceremony or that overwhelming sense of pride when the couple and their family tell you it was everything they had imagined and more!

What's the most magical moment you've witnessed at a Sant Ffraed House wedding?

Genuinely, every wedding has a magical moment – that one thing that takes your breath away and reminds you why we do what we do. One that did stand out was an impromptu outdoor first dance. It was a late-summer wedding, with glorious weather, and that morning, the bride said to me, "Make this wedding extra special" – as if we needed any encouragement!

Throughout the day, we added our signature touches, a cheeky shot to calm the nerves, hyping up the atmosphere and ensuring every moment sparkled. After the speeches, the band set up on the terrace, the sun was beginning to set and the energy was electric. I had a flash of inspiration. Within 20 minutes, we had cleared the terrace, repositioned the band, briefed the photographer and gathered the guests. The first dance with a sunset backdrop was incredible. I'm not ashamed to say it hit me right in the feels.

Can you describe a perfect wedding day at Sant Ffraed House, from sunrise to starlight?

It begins with a buzz of excitement at on-site accommodation - Jenny's. Music playing, fizz flowing, and loved ones getting ready together. Meanwhile, the Main House is coming to life as final touches are made and everything quietly clicks into place.

Then, that hush of anticipation before the ceremony, the doors open, and all eyes are on the couple – always a moment to remember. After the vows, guests spill onto the terrace for photos, champagne and killer confetti shots. The rest of the day flows effortlessly, from delicious food and laughterfilled speeches to that goldenhour glow as the newlyweds slip away for photos.

Which part of the venue gets the most 'wow' reaction on the day?

The bar – every time. It wouldn't look out of place in the heart of Mayfair. The contrast in aesthetic from the main house catches people by surprise. I never tire of hearing "oh wow" as guests walk in.

Hickmans A Luxury restaurant hotspot in the heart of Penarth.

Picture this: it's a warm Friday evening, and I'm ready for a night out. Childcare sorted, dress at the ready, and my trusty black heels that go with anything! I'm heading to Hickmans to catch up with some old friends. This luxurious spot is located on the corner of what used to be a popular Blockbuster video store just off Windsor Road. Penarth is known for its beautiful features, and Hickmans has definitely been added to the 'must-visit' list.

Upon entering, I was greeted by an interior design dream; it's luxurious without being ostentatious—stylish and demure with a homely feel that makes you feel right at home. The entrance displays a beautiful picture of some of history's most iconic stars, a nod to Hickmans' fresh and on-trend vibe.

My friends and I began the evening in classic girlfriend fashion, excitedly eyeing up the gorgeous cocktails while chatting away. They did not disappoint and were the perfect refreshing start to our evening.

For starters, we shared a selection of nibbles, including smoked almonds, chicken Caesar croquettes, and olives. The menu at Hickmans offers a delightful variety, which led us to try a mouthwatering starter of lamb and pistachio lollipops paired with peri-peri pork ribs—an absolutely delightful combination.

For the main course, I opted for the Thai green tofu curry, and it was delicious; as a lover of Thai cuisine, this dish was definitely a highlight, cooked to perfection. My friends chose the half chicken dish from Hickmans' rotisserie, and we finished our meal by sharing a divine chocolate dessert.

Hickmans spans over three floors, enhancing its sense of opulence and style. The second floor features a private dining area, and my favorite part of the restaurant is the outdoor terrace. As the weather heats up, finding outdoor dining options can be tricky, but Hickmans has it all.

We enjoyed a fabulous evening catching up against a backdrop of style, sophistication, and, most importantly, tasty food!

My verdict? This is definitely a place you have to try, and the customer service was fantastic.

Let’s Go Alfresco!

This time of year we have a plentiful and colourful larder to inspire our cooking. The freshest ingredients mean less fuss and less time spent in the kitchen, making entertaining easier.

With temperatures set to soar this summer, I will be planning some al fresco dining scenarios that will transport my guests to far away places such as Italy, Greece, Provence and Mexico.

I try to get most of the preparation done during the days leading up to themevent. Choosing dishes that can be prepared in advance, and finished off later, are key to stress free entertaining. Also, you may want to consider offering a mezze style assortment of smaller, simple dishes to excite the palette.

I tend to choose 1 main meat/ fish dish, plus a good veggie based dish, all supported with a few delicious sides that come together to form an exciting feast

The BBQ has always played a big part in my al fresco dining, and it’s a great way to inject some stunning flavours into food. Using a combination of brining, aromatic rubs, and a little wood smoke, the processes can give amazing results, and produce a show stopping centre piece for your table.

Once the cooking is underway, there is probably room on the Barbecue for additional things like stuffed, roasted peppers, charred leeks, or aubergines.

In my experience, people love to pick and mix from small plates. This can be anything from marinated olives, warm focaccia/ciabatta/or sourdough, charcuterie plates, mozzarella or burrata topped with pesto, or hummus and babaganoush. Whatever theme you are doing, do a little research into mezze/antipasto style plates, and shop for easy things you can bring together that don’t take up too much time.

Look at your main course and see if you can prepare anything in advance.

For my chosen recipe below, I will start by drying the pork out in the fridge for 24 hours, then apply a delicious aromatic rub to the flesh side of the joint, and leave for a further 24 hours. On the actual day of cooking, all I have to do is roll it up with a herbal pesto inside and secure with string before cooking on the BBQ.

One dish I cannot be without at this time of year are slow roasted Isle of White Tomatoes, they are a constant in my fridge, ready to add to pasta, salads, on toasted ciabatta, or as a side to roasted meat or fish dishes.

Dessert is also something you can do in advance. Ice-cream can be made and frozen, a boozy jelly or panna cotta can be made and set; sweet tarts can be baked, then filled and finished on the day etc.

The important thing is that you feel relaxed and ready to greet your guests, and be able to spend time with them without stressing over the food.

I have chosen a lovely menu that has such great memories for me. The starter is something I first cooked when working in the South of France for

Andrew Lloyd Webber, it was one of his favourite dishes, and has become one of ours too. You can get courgette flowers delivered to your door via ....

Porchetta is my chosen main course, a recipe I pinched from the great Franco Taruchio, which I with Piedmontese Peppers, and bowls of fat chips baked in the oven.

The Isle of White Tomato company supply their fabulous produce to your door, and what a feast for the eyes! I have included a quick recipe for slow roasted tommies below.

My dessert for you is an Aperol Spritz Jelly, it’s a delicious way to end a meal, light on the palette, but zingy and fresh.

Stuffed Courgette

Flowers- serves 6 people

6 courgette flowers

100g soft cheese e.g. Pantysgawn goat’s cheese, feta, or ricotta

50g crème fraiche

1 tablespoon pesto

Batter

125g self raising flour

About 100ml sparkling water

Sea salt and black pepper

1 teaspoon shredded mint and dill mixed -optional

What you do

To prepare the courgette flowers, mix together the filling ingredients, taste and season accordingly. Carefully spoon into each flower and rich the petal tips together.

Make the batter by whisking together the flour, gradually adding enough sparkling water to form a single cream consistency. Season with a little sea salt and black pepper. Stir in the herbs if using.

Heat a large pan 1/3 filled with sunflower oil, drip a little of the batter into the hot oil to test the heat. It should sizzle gently and rise to the surface.

Dip each courgette flower into the batter, allow the excess to drip off and slide the flower into the oil. Cook until lightly golden and drain well on kitchen paper. Serve with a simple Greek yoghurt flavoured with chopped mint and dill, plus a salad of summer leaves, fresh mint, dill and basil.

Slow Roasted Tomatoes

Flavour Bomb: Mediterranean vibe

3 tablespoons sea salt

1 rounded teaspoon black peppercorns

1 tablespoon fennel seeds

2 tablespoons dried rosemary

4 tablespoons dried thyme

3 tablespoons dried marjoram/ oregano

1 teaspoon dried mint

1 teaspoon dried lavender flowers, optional

1 tablespoon garlic granules

1 rounded teaspoon sugar

The rest:

1kg mixed tomatoes- I love Isle of White Tomatoes

Olive oil for brushing

Fresh parsley and basil to finish

What you do

Make the flavour bomb: Mix everything in a pestle and mortar, breaking down the fennel seeds and peppercorns with the salt, then mixing everything else in, pounding it all together. Now it is ready to use in roasts, grills, dressings, and marinades. In this case we are going to use a tablespoon of it on our roasted tomatoes. Pop the rest in a screw top jar and it will be good for a few months.

Prep the tommies: Cut the tomatoes in half around the middle, arrange on a large baking parchment roasting tray. Brush over the tops with olive oil, then sprinkle evenly with your delicious flavour bomb.

Roast in a preheated oven 140C fan/ gas 3. bake for about 1 hour, the tomatoes should be shrivelled and slightly brown on the edges, and smell like tomato jam. If your tomatoes are on the larger side, then just leave them longer util they get that “done” look.

Remove from the oven and cover with a good sprinkling of fresh herbs such as parsley or basil. You can also use this recipe replacing tomatoes with sweet peppers, just cut the peppers into quarters and remove the membrane and seeds.

Porchetta

When you get the pork joint home, unwrap, pat dry and open out onto a baking tray. Score the skin using a Stanley knife, then leave uncovered for 24 hours in the fridge to dry out, this will help produce the best crackling!

Great for feeding a crowd, this weight serves about 10 people

1 continuous piece of boneless pork belly and pork loin, about 3.5-4kg

50g garlic, crushed (about 10 cloves)

1 tablespoon fennel seeds, toasted

1 teaspoon dried chilli flakes, toasted

30g sea salt flakes

1 teaspoon black peppercorns

2 tablespoons each chopped fresh

rosemary, thyme and sage leaves

60g flat leaf parsley, chopped

1 heaped teaspoon grated lemon zest

2 tablespoons lemon juice

400g minced pork + seasoning

1 tablespoon lard or olive oil, at room temperature

Note: If roasting in the oven, add 2 sliced onions and a sliced fennel bulb under the roasting rack with 300ml water

What You Do

Combine the seasoning ingredients into a smooth paste using a mortar and pestle, or mini blender. Place the pork on a clean, flat surface skin side down, score the flesh making shallow cuts, then rub the paste into the meat with your hands.

Mix the minced pork with 1 teaspoon sea salt and 1/2 teaspoon crushed peppercorns- I also like to add a good pinch of fennel seeds. Spread the minced pork over the pasted pork, not too close to the edges otherwise it will ooze out.

Roll up the pork so the seam is underneath. Secure with several lengths of string, start at the centre to create the tension. Tie each at about 5cm intervals.

Heat the oven or your BBQ to 160C. Pat the meat as dry as possible with kitchen paper and put on a rack in a roasting tray. Pour in 300ml of water and roast for 3 hours, then turn the oven up as high as it will go and roast for

another 30 minutes, or until the crackling is golden brown (keep an eye on it).

Note: If barbecuing, cook indirect at 160c, use the vents to control the heat. Have a tray of water sitting under the pork on the lower level, this will catch any juices. You can add a couple of soaked wood chunks to the coals to give a lovely gentle smoked flavour, and great colour.

Remove from the oven/BBQ and allow to rest, uncovered for 30 minutes. If you’re making gravy, remove the meat and rack from the tray and skim off the fat. Return the rest of the juices to the pan along with the wine and put on a medium heat. Stir well and season to taste.
