Deze agenda is een publicatie van Studium Generale, dat onderdeel uitmaakt van het Studenten Service Centrum van de Universiteit Maastricht. Ze biedt een overzicht van het programma van activiteiten op het gebied van brede wetenschappelijke, maatschappelijke en culturele vorming. Het programma bestaat uit lezingen, collegereeksen, debatten, talkshows, films en het PAS Festival.
This agenda is a publication of Studium Generale, which is part of the Student Services Centre of Maastricht University. It offers an overview of our programme of activities covering a broad spectrum of scientific, social, and cultural topics of education. It consists of lectures, lecture series, talk shows, debates, films and the PAS Festival.
Annabel Miedema (1992) studeerde af aan de Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in Den Haag in 2016 en is sindsdien werkzaam als fotograaf, foto-illustrator en beeldredacteur voor onder andere de Volkskrant. Miedema’s werk kenmerkt zich door eenvoud, licht, speelsheid en kleurgebruik. “Het is altijd weer een uitdaging abstracte, ingewikkelde of zware onderwerpen een beetje luchtig in beeld te brengen”.
Annabel Miedema (b. 1992) graduated from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague in 2016 and has since worked as a photographer, photo illustrator and picture editor for publications including de Volkskrant. Miedema's work is characterised by simplicity, light, playfulness and use of colour. ‘It is always a challenge to portray abstract, complicated or heavy subjects in a light-hearted way’.

Ten geleide
GEZONDE STRESS
Als deze inleiding verschijnt, hebben we al een mooie start gemaakt van het seizoen met het PAS Festival. Ik schrijf dit echter midden in de drukte van de voorbereidingen. Het SG team is bezig met 100 dingen tegelijk. Niet alleen omdat het festival al onze aandacht en tijd vraagt, ook omdat het reguliere programma gaat beginnen in september en we het programma dat nu voorligt in deze agenda moeten realiseren. We werken de lijsten af met wat er allemaal moet gebeuren, maar voor wat we bovenaan kunnen wegstrepen, komt er onderaan iets terug.
Gezonde stress, als ik even voor mezelf praat, richting een mooi feestelijk begin waarbij we iedereen weer verwelkomen op de universiteit. Hopelijk is straks iedereen niet alleen moe, maar zeker ook voldaan. Bij voorbaat dank ik iedereen die daaraan bijdraagt en dan denk ik ook
aan het publiek waarvoor we het tenslotte doen. Trots ook op het kleine SG team dat dit uitgebreide programma realiseert.
Met plezier schotelen we ook dit nieuwe programma in deze agenda voor. We kijken uit naar de Tanslezing van Kwame Anthony Appiah, de jaarlijkse Dubois lezing en Human Rights Lecture. Maar we zien iedereen natuurlijk net zo lief bij alle andere lezingen, onze interessante reeksen, het programma in Bonnefanten, Film&Talks en de Techlecs.

Editorial HEALTHY STRESS
When this introduction is published, we’ll already have made a good start to the season with the PAS Festival. However, I’m writing this in the middle of the hectic preparations. The SG team is doing 100 things at once – not only because the festival is demanding all our attention and time, but also because the regular programme is starting in September and we have to get the programme you see before you in this diary up and running. We’re going down the list of all the things to do, but for each one we cross off the top another one appears at the bottom.
Healthy stress, speaking for myself at least, in the direction of a wonderful festive start, whereby we welcome everyone back to the university. Soon, hopefully, everyone will not just feel tired, but also fulfilled. I thank everyone in
advance for their contribution to this, and that includes the public for whom we’re doing it, after all. I’m also proud of the small SG team who are putting together this extensive programme.
And it gives us great pleasure to give you a taste of the new programme in this diary. We’re looking forward to the Tans lecture by Kwame Anthony Appiah, the annual Dubois lecture and the Human Rights Lecture. But of course, we also look forward to seeing everyone at all the other lectures, our interesting series, the Bonnefanten programme, the Film&Talks and the Techlecs.

A NEW DIALOGUE PLATFORM FOR THE UM COMMUNITY
On September 11th, we hosted a successful Meet and Greet for Omnium, our new dialogue platform. Students from various faculties connected, shared ideas, and expanded their viewpoints through dynamic activities and guided discussions. The event was led by our coordinator and ambassadors, Jacob Reuter and Yousra Achour, who have joined to ensure the student voice remains central. Omnium is for the UM community, and we are excited to see it grow. If you're interested in becoming an ambassador or participating in future events, please reach out to us.

For 40 years, Donald Trump’s political godfather Roger Stone did his dirty work for him. In 2018, he let the Danish filmmaker Christoffer Guldbrandsen fully into his unfiltered life for three years, and Gulbrandsen followed the Make America Great Again movement from close up. We see how Stone lets radical Proud Boys cheer him on, slip him cheques and protect him. He mocks people who are different, bullies subordinates and spreads malicious
rumours about opponents. A shocking portrait that shows that the violent storming of the Capitol was a logical consequence of years of hatemongering. The question is: will it go further in the future? Guldbrandsen says, ‘’As to the events I witnessed, I believe they were only the beginning. A warning of what is yet to come.”
Afterwards, there will be a Zoom Q&A with director Christoffer Guldbrandsen.

Dit is het tweede deel van een reeks van 8 colleges die in september is begonnen. Dagelijks overschrijden honderden grensbewoners in de Euregio Maas-Rijn de landsgrens om te werken, winkelen, studeren of recreëren. Het opheffen van de grenscontroles heeft het makkelijker gemaakt, maar er bestaan nog veel zichtbare en onzichtbare beperkingen als het gaat om grensoverschrijdende samenwerking en mobiliteit. Deze reeks gaat in op de noodzaak voor en de wijze waarop verdergaande Europese integratie aan de grens dient plaats te vinden. Hoe hebben bijvoor-
beeld (bestuurlijke) samenwerking, arbeidsmobiliteit, veiligheid en gezondheidszorg zich grensoverschrijdend ontwikkeld en wat kunnen we van de toekomst verwachten? Hoe kunnen we Europese integratie aan de grens verder bevorderen?

Samenzweringstheorieën en desinformatie tieren tegenwoordig welig; en ook in de omgang met het verleden raken de feiten in de verdrukking. Buitenaardse wezens bij de bouw van de piramiden; geheimzinnige middeleeuwse broederschappen die Bijbelse schatten of mysteriën behoeden... Weinig hard bewijs maar des te meer speculatieve suggesties en spannende scenario’s. Deze lezing verkent de ontwikkeling en de kenmerken van wat in het Engels pseudohistory heet, van romantische legendes tot History Channel.

Legal professionals sometimes request the assistance of scientists in the courtroom. For example, legal psychologists are asked to evaluate the reliability of eyewitness testimony, or forensic pathologists are consulted to provide a report on the cause of death. Such expert witness help can be of grave importance in preventing errors
slipping into the criminal justice system, such as the occurrence of wrongful convictions. In this lecture series, we give several talks about how different scientific disciplines can contribute to justice in the courtroom.

Samarkand is een magische en evocatieve naam, een gezegend letter- en klankspel dat met je ziel aan de haal gaat. Het ligt in Oezbekistan, dat nagenoeg gelijk is aan het centrale deel van het oude Toerkestan: het hart van Centraal-Azië. Ooit vertrokken hier ruiters om grote delen van de wereld te onderwerpen. Om de streek werd gevochten vanwege de belangrijke handelswegen en rijke oases als Samarkand, Boechara en Chiva. Met die steden vormt Oezbekistan het centrale gedeelte van de fameuze Zijderoute. Het gebied, en daarmee ook de Zijderoute, verloor aan belang na de ontdekking van de zeewegen naar Indië en Oost-Azië en het werd er volledig stil toen de Russen de Trans-Siberische spoorlijn hadden aangelegd. Sinds 1979 is de strijd om en in het gebied weer opgelaaid en staat de regio opnieuw midden in de geopolitieke belangstelling. Tijdens de colleges wordt verhaald over de turbulente geschiedenis van de streek met veel aandacht voor de Arabische, Mongoolse en Russische overheersing.

Studium Generale and Opera Zuid are teaming up to offer students a unique opportunity to go to the opera – at a quarter of the normal price!
Bluebeard’s Castle is a psychological thriller about the question of how much truth love can tolerate. The opera tells the story of Judith, who marries the mysterious Bluebeard. In her desire to get to know him, she cannot contain her curiosity. This dark and intriguing story is enhanced by the music of Béla Bartók, one of the most influential composers of the 20th
century. He combines elements of folk music with an enchantingly rich and harmonic language. The orchestra has to go all out. Internationally acclaimed singers Thomas Oliemans and Deirdre Angenent make their debut with Opera Zuid as Duke Bluebeard and Judith.
The opera will be performed in Hungarian with Dutch and English surtitles. Prior to the opera, there will be an introduction in English at 18.30.

CRITICAL THEORY: THE LEGACY OF THE FRANKFURT SCHOOL

The Institute for Social Research was opened at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University, in Frankfurt, on June 22 1924, and later gained fame for the works of Adorno, Benjamin, Fromm, Marcuse and Habermas as the ‘Frankfurt School’. This series addresses the question of what the Frankfurt School stands for, as well as the topicality of the critical theory it developed. Why is critical theory important with regard to the decline of democracy, unjust socio-economic inequality and ecological catastrophe? The complexity of these three related issues calls for an interdisciplinary approach that is advocated at universities today, but often comes to nothing. In contrast, the Frankfurt School succeeded in looking at the problems of their time through the lenses of economics, social psychology, cultural theory, law, aesthetics, historical science, cultural anthropol-
ogy and philosophy. Amid an ‘age of extremes’ (Eric Hobsbawn), the Frankfurt School developed a social psychology whose heuristic value can also be made fruitful in the 21st century to connect the psyche of the individual with the development of society.

Planetary Health: THE RECIPE FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

Pim Martens discusses the health of our planet, and the impacts on human health (which ultimately depends on the health of the planet). To this end, rather than separating ourselves further from nature—for
example, by putting fences around it— we should learn to live with nature again. Fundamentally rethinking our relationship with our living planet has therefore never been more important. However, we cannot do so unless we think differently about our place on Earth. Healthy human societies cannot exist on a dying planet. So we must wonder and reconnect with nature. If you respect the Earth, you respect life and yourself. And that is the essence of planetary health.

Essentially, ethics is about what it is for a person to do well the one thing we are all doing, which is making a human life. In doing so, there are many things we must keep in mind. We have, for example, general moral duties to others, relationships that impose special demands on us and projects to which we are committed. But among the resources that enable and constrain our life-making are our social identities — including our gender, sexuality, class, nationality, race, ethnicity and profession. In this lecture, Kwame Anthony Appiah will sketch a picture of what these identities have in common and explore some of the ways they matter for ethics.
Kwame Anthony Appiah is a BritishAmerican philosopher and writer who has written about political philosophy, ethics, the philosophy of language and mind, and African intellectual history. Appiah taught at the University of Ghana, Cornell, Yale and Harvard. He was the Laurance S. Rockefeller University Professor of Philosophy at Princeton University. Since 2014, he has been Professor of Philosophy and Law at New York University. Appiah was elected President of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in January 2022.
The Tans Lecture is organised every year to honour Dr. J. Tans (1912-1993), the founding father of Maastricht University.

In samenwerking met Bonnefanten organiseert Studium Generale gesprekken tussen kunstenaars of de tentoonstellingsmakers en wetenschappers. Bijzonder ontmoetingen waar kunst en wetenschap samenkomen. Samen met de gastconservator Dorien Tamis en de conservator oude kunst Jip van Rijen spreken we over hoogmoed, hebzucht, afgunst, woede, lust, gulzigheid en onverschilligheid en over waar deze hoofdzonden vandaan komen en hoe ze door kunstenaars zijn verbeeld. De wetenschapper die zal aanschuiven wordt later bekend gemaakt via onze website.
De tentoonstelling Goed Fout: De Zeven Hoofdzonden in beeld is van 19 oktober t/m 12 januari te zien in Bonnefanten (www.bonnefanten.nl). In het kader van de tentoonstelling organiseert Studium Generale in samenwerking met Lumière Cinema op dinsdag 3 december ook nog een Film&Talk, in het Engels, waarbij Lumière-publieksfavoriet SE7EN wordt getoond (zie pag. 30).

In 2023, a national reckoning around child sexual abuse was already underway in France when film star Emmanuelle Béart (Manon of the Springs, 8 Women, Mission: Impossible) publicly revealed she is an incest survivor. Choosing both first-person and ensemble documentary voices, Béart creates a powerful platform for fellow fighters to challenge the insidious shame that arises from incest. Along with codirector Anastasia Mikova, two other women and a man, Béart points the finger at the laws and social taboos of a country where a child is sexually abused every three minutes. Reluctant to include her own story at first, Béart powerfully remonstrates: “the silence—which is first imposed by the person who rapes you—this silence makes a terrible noise within you and takes all kinds of forms” in this stirring and personal critique.
After the film, there is a Q&A with Joachim Lumbroso, who is portrayed in the film and with an expert in the field of trauma and psychology.

Bewegen is gezond. Voldoende bewegen heeft invloed op het gewicht en verbetert de motoriek. Ook is het goed voor de ontwikkeling van de hersenen en de mentale gezondheid, onder andere omdat bewegen stressregulatie verbetert. Daarnaast gaat beweging chronische ziektes tegen, zoals hart- en vaatziekten, diabetes en overgewicht. Genoeg redenen om hier in deze reeks uitgebreid bij stil te staan.
Elke avond begint met een college van een expert. De colleges worden zowel live als online aangeboden. De posterpresentaties van de studenten in de pauze en de onderwijsgroepen, waarin in kleine groepen onder begeleiding van studenten dieper op de stof wordt ingegaan, zijn alleen live. De Gezondheidsuniversiteit Maastricht is een samenwerking tussen het Maastricht UMC+ en de Universiteit Maastricht. Het is een initiatief van studenten van de Faculty of Health Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML).

LET’S TALK is a programme in which we not only give the floor to experts, but also challenge the audience to speak up and interact. In a lively and relaxed setting, we address issues of (student) life: relationships, career, love, health, stress, party life, engagement, etc. Have a drink, listen, talk and sharpen your thoughts and opinions.
The topic will be chosen by the FHML Honours students who organise this edition. Keep an eye on our website for more information.

Nanotechnologie speelt een steeds grotere rol in ons dagelijks leven doordat het toepassingen als mobiele telefoons, gezichtsherkenning en kunstmatige intelligentie mogelijk maakt. Toch is het vrij onzichtbaar welke fysica en technologie hierbij een rol speelt op de nanoschaal.
Deze lezing geeft een overzicht van de geschiedenis en de huidige ontwikkelingen in de nanotechnologie, waarbij zowel natuurkundige limieten als uitdagingen in fabricagetechniek de revue passeren. Vervolgens kijken we vooruit naar nieuwe ontwikkelingen, ultieme grenzen van de
nanotechnologie, en de impact op onze toekomstige samenleving.

On mainstream social media platforms, young far-right women make extremism relatable. They share Instagram stories about organic foods, while subtly propagating the ‘pure’ white race and the Great Replacement theory. Amid discussions of dating and family life, they call on women to become housewives in order to counteract the effects of feminism.
Eviane Leidig offers an in-depth look into the world of far-right women influencers and the digital lifestyle they cultivate as they seek recruits for white nationalism. While marketing themselves as authentic and accessible, in order to reach new followers, they successfully spread a hateful ideology. Leidig will discuss how the current success of far-right women influencers can be explained, how the scope and reach of their ideas differ from pre-internet years, and in what ways these influencers impact gender roles.

Tot zo’n veertig jaar geleden werd de menselijke evolutie gezien als een rechtlijnige opeenvolging van soorten die langzaam veranderden van primitieve mensaapachtigen tot de moderne mens. Sindsdien hebben betere dateringsmethoden van fossielen en een groot aantal nieuwe vondsten laten zien dat er
zeker vanaf 3.5 miljoen jaar geleden meerdere mensachtige soorten tegelijkertijd voorkwamen, vaak ook in hetzelfde gebied. In zijn lezing zal Fred Spoor het hebben over de co-existentie van soorten in onze evolutionaire stamboom, gebaseerd op zijn eigen onderzoek, met name in oostelijk Afrika.

In zijn boek En nu? De mens als bedreigde diersoort verkent Jan Bransen een nieuw mensbeeld aan de hand van elf mentaliteitsveranderingen. Centraal staat de verandering van ‘de mens als heerser’ naar ‘de mens als debutant’. Een belangrijke stelling in het boek is dat als wij ons als debutant zouden opstellen, we een enorme boost zouden geven aan de rol van ons leer- en ontwikkelingsvermogen. Dat gegeven zal hij in deze lezing koppelen aan een verschil tussen het gebruiken van politieke strijd en het gebruiken van levensbeschouwelijke investeringen om onze pluraliteit vreedzaam en duurzaam met elkaar te organiseren.

Independent jurisdiction and flesh-andblood judges are true cornerstones of legal protection in our society. In that light, what does the rise of AI mean for independent and expert jurisdiction? Up to now, jurisdiction has adopted a reticent stance with regard to AI. But on the other
hand, it recently turned out that a judge had used ChatGPT in drawing up a draft verdict. Judges also have to judge on issues in which AI plays a role, for example if the use of AI by the government appears to violate citizens’ rights.
This raises the question of what the rise of AI means for the judiciary and particularly for the role of jurisdiction in protecting fundamental rights. Completely erroneously, numerous judges still seem to be thinking ‘AI is not for me’. But in the year 2024, legal protection also requires judges to keep an open mind regarding AI, and to recognise opportunities as well as risks.
