Deze agenda is een publicatie van Studium Generale, dat onderdeel uitmaakt van het Studenten Service Centrum van de Universiteit Maastricht. Ze biedt een overzicht van het programma van activiteiten op het gebied van brede wetenschappelijke, maatschappelijke en culturele vorming. Het programma bestaat uit lezingen, collegereeksen, debatten, talkshows, films en het PAS Festival.
This agenda is a publication of Studium Generale, which is part of the Student Services Centre of Maastricht University. It offers an overview of our programme of activities covering a broad spectrum of scientific, social, and cultural topics of education. It consists of lectures, lecture series, talk shows, debates, films and the PAS Festival.
Annabel Miedema (1992) studeerde af aan de Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in Den Haag in 2016 en is sindsdien werkzaam als fotograaf, foto-illustrator en beeldredacteur voor onder andere de Volkskrant. Miedema’s werk kenmerkt zich door eenvoud, licht, speelsheid en kleurgebruik. “Het is altijd weer een uitdaging abstracte, ingewikkelde of zware onderwerpen een beetje luchtig in beeld te brengen”.
Annabel Miedema (b. 1992) graduated from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague in 2016 and has since worked as a photographer, photo illustrator and picture editor for publications including de Volkskrant. Miedema's work is characterised by simplicity, light, playfulness and use of colour. ‘It is always a challenge to portray abstract, complicated or heavy subjects in a light-hearted way’.

Ten geleide
Onder de vleugels van Studium Generale start in september het dialoogplatform OmniUM (Latijns voor van allemaal). Als internationale en diverse universiteit waar iedereen welkom is, ziet de Universiteit Maastricht het als haar rol te laten zien dat respectvolle, menswaardige dialogen ook in debat met elkaar mogelijk zijn. Juist nu, in een tijd van snelle grote veranderingen die ook op het welbevinden van studenten van grote invloed zijn, en zeker ook bij kwesties die de gemoederen bewegen, is het belangrijk een open en veilige ruimte te bieden om samen te komen en met elkaar van gedachten te wisselen.

OmniUM gaat dat faciliteren en ondersteunt met raad en daad iedereen uit de universitaire gemeenschap die vanuit betrokkenheid wil reflecteren op moeilijke kwesties in gesprekken, debatten en discussies. Ben jij een student, een medewerker, vereniging of organisatie van de universiteit die iets op de agenda wil zetten? Heb je ideeën voor een dialoogprogramma maar wil je advies over de opzet en zoek je een plek waar het kan? Wij, als team Studium Generale, zijn altijd hard aan het werk om een mooi programma te maken voor ons publiek. Ook doen we ons best om dit programma onder de aandacht te brengen. Toch zijn wij er ons van bewust dat er altijd ruimte is voor verbetering. We zijn erg benieuwd wat jij van ons programma vindt en wat je wensen zijn. Ook willen we graag weten of, en zo ja wat we kunnen verbeteren op het gebied van communicatie.
Editorial OMNIUM, PLATFORM FOR DIALOGUE
The dialogue platform OmniUM (Latin for from all of us) will start in September under the wings of Studium Generale. As an international and diverse university where everyone is welcome, Maastricht University sees it as its role to show that respectful, humane dialogues are also possible in debate with each other. Especially now, in a time of rapid, major changes that also have a major influence on the well-being of students, and certainly also when it is about issues that move people's minds, it is important to offer an open and safe space to come together and interact with each other to exchange ideas.
OmniUM will facilitate this and will support, with advice and assistance, everyone from the university community who wants to reflect on difficult issues through involvement in conversations, debates and discussions. Are you a student, employee, association or organisation of the university that wants to put something on the agenda? Do you have ideas for a dialogue programme but would you like advice about the design and are you looking for a place where it is possible? Het Pleasure, Art and Science FestivalPAS is dé plek waar cultuur, wetenschap en kunst samenkomen. Tijdens dit gratis festival zet de Universiteit Maastricht de deuren van een aantal van haar gebouwen open. Iedereen is welkom! Je kunt kiezen uit meer dan vijftig activiteiten per avond.
Ben je nieuwsgierig naar het onderzoek dat bij de universiteit wordt gedaan? En wil je dat combineren met een grote variatie aan concerten, (straat)theater- en dansvoorstellingen, kunstprojecten en andere acts? Dompel je dan onder tijdens het PAS Festival en ga mee op avontuur langs binnentuinen, binnenplaatsen, een bestuurskamer, onderwijsruimtes, mooie zalen zoals de oude Statenzaal en andere verborgen plekken van de universiteit. Ook het prachtige Natuurhistorisch Museum Maastricht is van de partij. Elke act, elke presentatie is een uniek verhaal. Geniet tussendoor van een drankje.
Het Studenten Service Centrum aan de Bonnefantenstraat 2 fungeert als festivalhart. Hier is de festivalbrochure beschikbaar met een tijdschema om je avond te plannen. Maar rondlopen en je ter plekke laten verrassen kan natuurlijk ook!

The Pleasure, Art and Science FestivalPAS is the ultimate meeting place for culture, science and art. At this free festival, Maastricht University opens the doors to several of its buildings. Everyone is welcome! You can choose from more than fifty activities each evening.
Are you curious about the research being done at the university? And would you like to combine that with a wide variety of concerts, theatre, street theatre and dance performances, art projects and other acts? Then immerse yourself in the PAS Festival and join in the adventure, visiting courtyards and gardens, a board room, lecture theatres, beautiful halls like the old Statenzaal and other hidden spots in the university. Another venue is the magnificent Natural History Museum of Maastricht. Each act and each presentation is a unique story. And in between them all, you can enjoy a drink.
The festival hub is located at the Student Services Centre at Bonnefantenstraat 2, where you can pick up the festival guide to help plan your evening. But of course you can also just wander about and let things take you by surprise!

Human rights is a topic that is constantly on the agenda. We keep hoping things will change for the better, but atrocities are daily news. Uprisings and big political changes can lead to better human rights conditions, but also to war and crimes against humanity. This series of lectures will explore the significance of human rights in a globalising world. The lectures will demonstrate how human rights are
increasingly becoming an instrument with which to challenge the negative side effects of globalisation.

Wat doet de mens met taal? En wat doet taal met de mens? Deze twee vragen staan centraal in deze reeks die draait om een kwestie die het volgende citaat van Ludwig Wittgenstein aanduidt: “De grenzen van mijn taal vormen de grenzen van mijn wereld.” Wat zijn de grenzen van de taal?
Kunnen ze overschreden worden? En zo ja, hoe? De moderne taalfilosofie geeft de grenzen aan van de door René Descartes op de rails gezette bewustzijnsfilosofie.
Zowel de hermeneutische als analytische filosofie doen daarbij een duit in het zakje.
De Kritische Theorie en het Poststructuralisme verleggen het accent door aandacht te vragen voor de relatie tussen taal en macht. Normaliseren priesters en psychiaters met hun taalgebruik niet het (zelf) begrip van gelovigen en patiënten? Berust daarop hun macht? Vergt de bevrijding van het taalgebruik van hulpverleners en dat
van anderen niet een beeldenstorm? Of is de hoop dat de kunst mensen kan bevrijden van de taal waarin zij gevangen zitten een al te romantisch verlangen? De gestelde vragen vergen een analyse van het werk van onder anderen Herder, Frege, Gadamer, Klemperer, Adorno, Quine, Davidson, Foucault and Stanley.

New Perspectives onto the Universe in the Era of Multi-Messenger Astrophysics

Since the revolutionary discovery of gravitational wave emission from a binary black hole merger in 2015, the remarkable gravitational wave detectors LIGO, Virgo and KAGRA have detected at least ninety compact object mergers. These events are transforming modern astronomy.
The first binary neutron star merger was observed in 2017 in both gravitational and electromagnetic radiation, thus opening up a new era in multi-messenger astrophysics. Multi-messenger astrophysics is the coordinated observation and interpretation of multiple signals received from the same astronomical event. The multi-messenger
aspect has enabled major advances in various fields of modern physics: from gravity, high-energy astrophysics and nuclear physics to cosmology.
In this talk, Nissanke will discuss her work in strong-field gravity astrophysics and how combining observations, theory and experiment have been key in making progress in this field. She will present the challenges and the opportunities that have emerged in multi-messenger astrophysics, and what the future holds.

How do you storm a world that doesn’t seem made for you? She They Us shows how women deal with daily discrimination in the areas of gender, sexuality, skin colour, class and religion. A documentary series about the fight for a future in which everyone can be equal. We are showing two parts of the series.
Part one: ACCEPTANCE
Hanne is a top international model and is 17 when they discover that they are an intersex person. Today, they use this model status to stop cosmetic operations on intersex children, which they had to undergo themself. And on the verge of her big breakthrough, Charlotte, a Belgian
singer with Caribbean roots, enters into confrontation with the trauma of racism. It appears that the world just does not accept either of them.
Part two: SAFETY
Why is a safe environment for women not a matter of course? Eefje is an e-sports journalist for renowned gaming events. Like many women in the game world, besides being stalked, she is confronted on a daily basis with online misogyny and threats. Fatima-Zohra brings together abused and threatened Muslim girls and women, in order to create a safe space within their community. There, they learn to rebuild their self-confidence.
The film is introduced by a spoken word artist. Afterwards, there is a Q&A with director Zaïde Bil.

Dagelijks overschrijden honderden grensbewoners in de Euregio Maas-Rijn de landsgrens om te werken, winkelen, studeren of recreëren. Het opheffen van de grenscontroles heeft het makkelijker gemaakt, maar er bestaan nog veel zichtbare en onzichtbare beperkingen als het gaat om grensoverschrijdende samenwerking en mobiliteit. Deze reeks gaat in op de noodzaak voor en de wijze waarop verdergaande Europese integratie aan de grens dient plaats te vinden. Hoe hebben bijvoor-
beeld (bestuurlijke) samenwerking, arbeidsmobiliteit, veiligheid en gezondheidszorg zich grensoverschrijdende ontwikkelt en wat kunnen we van de toekomst verwachten? Hoe kunnen we Europese Integratie aan de grens verder bevorderen?

Symbiose – het samenleven van organismen van dezelfde soort, verschillende soorten of van organismen en technische artefacten – is een van de meest voorkomende kenmerken van het leven op aarde en motor van biologische en culturele innovatie. Het samenleven is echter niet altijd voordelig voor de in symbiose
levende soorten. Soms wel, zoals bij de symbiose tussen insecten en bloemen, die de insecten voedsel verschaffen en bloemen bevruchting, maar soms is de symbiose slechts voordelig voor de ene soort en nadelig voor de andere, zoals in het geval van parasieten zoals het coronavirus.
Jos de Mul zal het leven in het Symbioceen toelichten aan de hand van symbiose tussen mens en kunstmatige intelligentie met als voorbeeld ChatGPT. Hij zal betogen dat zich achter de op het eerste gezicht nuttige ‘intelligente chatbox’ een technische parasiet schuilgaat, die data uit zijn ‘gebruikers’ slurpt.

Welke rol kunnen publieksfilosofen spelen in het gepolariseerde maatschappelijke debat? In deze lezing gaat filosoof, schrijver en programmamaker Stine Jensen in op haar boek Onderstroom, waarin ze verkent hoe mediastormen en mediahypes ontstaan. Wat speelt er daarbij onder de oppervlakte en hoe kun je filosofie inzetten om dit soort hypes te duiden? Hoe kun je ontsnappen aan de waan van de dag? Het is een ode aan de verbeelding, het speelse plezier van goed kijken, lezen en luisteren.

MONDAY 30 SEPTEMBER Neutrino
The Super-Kamiokande Neutrino
Detector is located at a depth of more than a thousand metres, in the Japanese mountain Ikeno-yama. This detector is designed for the physical study of the neutrino – an elementary particle that may explain the origin of the universe. International scientists live and work in the mountain village together with the local population and their spiritual leaders.
In this poetic-philosophical documentary, directed by Hannie van den Bergh and Jan van den Berg, the invisible quantum world and tangible reality come together in encounters with colourful scientists and villagers. A film that starts out as a personal voyage of discovery into physical knowledge grows into a universal existential quest.
The film will be introduced by Prof. Patrick Decowski, Professor of Physics at the University of Amsterdam and affiliated with the Institute for Subatomic Physics Nikhef. The film is followed by a Q&A with the directors and Patrick Decowski.

This stunning documentary directed by Bernando Ruiz shows how science be-
came the cornerstone of a universal fight for human rights. The story starts in the 1980s, when a group of Argentine students decide to help legendary forensic scientist Clyde Snow with his investigation into the desaparacidos – the thousands of people who ‘disappeared’ during the Argentine dictatorship in the preceding years. The team had great success, because in the decades that followed they were called upon to dig for the truth behind massacres and mass graves all over the world, from Kurdistan to Ethiopia, including the horrific El Mozoto massacre in El Salvador. Wherever they go, the scientists manage to uncover the truth, but not without danger.

Elke Nederlander krijgt structureel te veel PFAS binnen. Regelmatig verschijnen nieuwsberichten over te hoge concentraties ervan in steden, niet alleen nabij fabrieken. Het zit in veel producten die we dagelijks gebruiken zoals anti-aanbakpannen, regenjassen en schoenspray. Maar ook: in de lucht, ons drinkwater en eten. PFAS is niet meer weg te denken uit ons leven, maar wat is het precies?
Expert Chiel Jonker legt uit waaruit PFAS bestaat en wat het tot zo’n populaire chemische stoffengroep maakt, waar deze stoffen in onze omgeving terecht komen en welk (potentieel) risico dat inhoudt voor onze gezondheid. Ook vertelt hij over zijn eigen onderzoek naar PFAS en licht hij toe waarom het belangrijk is om onderzoek te blijven doen naar dit soort chemische stoffen.

In deze lezing wordt dieper ingegaan op het DNA van de democratie. Dat begint met de verbreding naar een democratische samenlevingsvorm, de democratische mens en de meocratische deugden. Men kan niet volstaan met het beginsel van volkssoevereiniteit, een grondwettelijke verankering van vrije en eerlijke verkiezingen, maar zal ook de rol van de deugd in de
democratische samenleving moeten bespreken en wat dat betekent voor de invulling van het begrip burgerschap. Bakker doet dat aan de hand van de grondlegger van die gedachte, de 19e-eeuwse Franse denker/schrijver/politicus Alexis de Tocqueville (1805 -1859). Hoe kan zijn inzicht in de rol van de deugdzame burger vorm krijgen in onze tijd en hoe kunnen deze inzichten gerelateerd worden aan het maatschappelijke onbehagen? Bakker bespreekt de moderne context aan de hand van zijn boek dat in maart jl. erscheen: Over de Democratie in Nederland.

Since 1980, the world economy has been undergoing a fundamental transformation. Profits and stock valuations of dominant firms are growing faster than ever; seemingly a sign of economic growth and progress. At the same time, we see that wages for production and service workers are stagnating, that labour dynamism and labour participation are falling, and that the number of startup companies is decreasing. The Profit Paradox asks what is going
on in the global economy. In his lecture, Jan Eeckhout will explore this question with you.
Jan Eeckhout is the ICREA Research Professor at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona and has taught at the University of Pennsylvania, University College London, Princeton and New York University. ICREA, the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies, is a foundation supported by the Catalan Government and guided by a Board of Trustees. Whereas previously, you had to search for extreme right-wing ideas in a dark corner of the internet, nowadays the rhetoric seems to be everywhere. Whether it concerns replacement theories in the Dutch Lower House, remarks in Facebook comments under news items, or projections on the Erasmus Bridge, the extreme rightwing message seeps into our lives every day. According to former research journalist and extremism researcher Nikki Sterkenburg, this development has not appeared out of thin air. From 2015, she spent many years with extreme right-wing acti-
vists and saw how the Dutch extreme right-wing movement succeeded in normalising its xenophobia and intolerant message and in creating indifference. In this lecture, she will discuss issues like how it is possible that such a fertile breeding ground could exist, at what point opinions become problematic and which challenges are involved in combatting non-violent extremism. She is currently working as the deputy head of National Security Analysis with the National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security (NCTV), but she is giving this lecture in a personal capacity.
