JEZELF IN DE WERELD TE ZIEN SEEING YOURSELF IN THE WORLD

De Wynand Wijnen onderwijsprijs ging dit jaar naar het TeenzCollege, dat een programma biedt dat jongeren al vroegtijdig betrekt bij de universiteit. Een verdiende erkenning waar ik ze van harte mee feliciteer. Een programma dat niet alleen een positieve band tussen de universiteit en de regio bevordert, maar bovenal academische nieuwsgierigheid stimuleert.

Academische nieuwsgierigheid, of eigenlijk nieuwsgierigheid in het algemeen: hoe belangrijk is dat wel niet. Ik houd van mensen die nieuwsgierig zijn, mensen met weetlust. Bij Mathieu Segers, de hoogleraar Europese geschiedenis die in december overleed, ontbrandde die nieuwsgierigheid op 15-jarige leeftijd tijdens de onderhandelingen over het Verdrag van Maastricht. Het ging nooit meer bij hem weg en leverde een indrukwekkend oeuvre op. Wat een verlies dat we zijn intellectuele rijkdom en inzichten moeten missen.

Nieuwsgierigheid vraagt dat je je openstelt voor het andere en dat je je eigen vooringenomenheid durft te laten varen. Segers had het in de podcast Café

Europa over het verschil van jezelf zien in de wereld of de wereld zien vanuit jezelf: “Je bent als mens geneigd om de wereld vanuit jezelf te zien. Dan zie je heel veel dingen niet en ontstaan er misverstanden. […] De opdracht is jezelf in de wereld te zien. Dat kan alleen als je je best doet je te verplaatsen in andere perspectieven.”

Dit ging niet alleen over nieuwsgierigheid, maar ook over perspectief en hoe je je verhoudt tot de wereld. Kijk je naar de wereld met jezelf als maatstaf, óf zie je het geheel en wat jouw rol is? Het verschil tussen individualisme en maatschappelijke betrokkenheid.

Met het programma van Studium Generale hopen wij bij te dragen aan deze opdracht. We hopen dat ook dit programma weer helpt om nieuwe perspectieven af te tasten en de wereld te zien. Bijvoorbeeld met lezingen over ons sociale brein, geroofd joods kunstbezit, transgenerationele trauma’s en met de Schumanlezing.

The Wynand Wijnen education prize, went this year to the TeenzCollege, which provides a programme that gets young people involved in the university early on. A well-deserved recognition, on which I warmly congratulate them. Not only does the programme promote a positive link between the university and the region, but it also stimulates academic curiosity.

And academic curiosity, or rather curiosity in general, is extremely important. I like people who are curious; people with an appetite for knowledge. In the case of Mathieu Segers, the professor of European history who passed away at the end of December, this curiosity was sparked off at the age of 15, when he experienced the Maastricht Treaty negotiations. His curiosity never left him and led to an impressive oeuvre. It is a great loss that we have to do without his intellectual richness and wisdom.

Curiosity demands that you open up to other things and dare to let go of your own prejudices. In the podcast Café Europa, Segers talked about the difference between seeing yourself in

the world and seeing the world through yourself. “As a person, you are inclined to see the world through yourself. Then there are many things you don’t see, and misunderstandings arise. […] The task is to see yourself in the world. You can only do so if you try your best to put yourself in other perspectives.”

This was not just about curiosity, but also about perspective and how you relate to the world. Do you look at the world by taking yourself as the benchmark, or do you see the whole picture and your role in it? It is the difference between individualism and social engagement.

We hope to contribute to carrying out this task through the Studium Generale programme. We also hope that this programme will once again help you to explore new perspectives and see the world, through lectures on, for example, the origin of extreme beliefs, holistic approaches to psychiatric disorders, and through the Schuman Lecture.

Wat mensen slimmer maakt dan andere apen is niet een groter brein, maar een socialer brein: taal, cultuur, kennis en kunst bestaan omdat wij van elkaar en aan

elkaar kunnen leren. Wij zijn geëvolueerd als groepsdieren. In deze lezing wordt ingezoomd op een belangrijk maar onderschat gevolg daarvan: onze hypergevoeligheid voor tradities, conventies en omgangsvormen. Snappen hoe en waarom deze gevoeligheid het gevolg is van genetische en culturele selectie geeft een nieuw perspectief op cultuurverschillen — en op wat we fout doen in onze huidige omgang met multiculturalisme en culturele fricties.

The Person in Psychiatry: An Ecohumanist, Enactive Approach to Psychiatry

Many people suffer from psychiatric disorders and mental distress. Yet much is still unclear – regarding both how to

understand these problems and how best to treat them. One of the main difficulties is articulating the relationship between the wide array of factors that may cause or contribute to psychiatric disorders.

Taking an enactive, ecohumanist approach, Sanneke de Haan argues that taking people’s experiences seriously requires us to look at their developmental history and the role of the specific sociocultural practices they take part in, and finally to take account of people’s existential (self)understanding.

Instead of assuming an individualistic approach, a focus on the person in psychiatry reveals the need to take their context – broadly understood –into account. This is in line with holistic, personalised approaches to treatment. It also implies that psychiatry may need to become more societally and/or politically engaged.

There is a Place on Earth is about the role of artists in wilderness conservation. The documentary takes us on a poetic journey around the world, where we meet artists who show great commitment to the environment in their extremely creative

work. In the process, we experience a unique, intuitive connection to the wild –and feel the necessity to protect it. In order to make the film, interviews were held with both artists and conservationists, in Portugal, India, the USA, France, Canada, Hawaii, South Africa and the Netherlands.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Ellen van den Honert.

The beliefs of a conspiracy theorist, terrorist, anti-institutional extremist or fundamentalist are all paradigm examples of extreme beliefs. However, it is far from clear what extreme beliefs are. What makes them problematic? And who decides?

In this lecture, Naomi Kloosterboer and Nora Kindermann discuss the challenges of defining extreme beliefs, of understanding and explaining extreme beliefs and of engaging with extreme believers in private and public circumstances.

Alex de Koter bestudeert de levensloop van sterren die eindigen in een supernovaexplosie. Hij kijkt ook naar de invloed die deze zogenoemde zware sterren hebben op hun omgeving. Het onderzoeksdoel van zijn groep is het in kaart brengen

en begrijpen van de condities waarmee zware sterren hun levens beginnen, en de natuurkunde die de levensloop van deze sterren stuurt. Er zijn aanwijzingen die erop duiden dat de allereerste sterren die ooit in het heelal zijn gevormd zware sterren waren. Door middel van zowel observationele als theoretische studies, met behulp van de grootste waarneemfaciliteiten op aarde en in de ruimte, is zijn doel op termijn deze eerste sterren en hun rol in de vorming van sterrenstelsels te begrijpen.

Veel oorlogen en bezettingen gaan gepaard met plunderingen van cultureel erfgoed, waaronder kunstvoorwerpen. Zo zijn tijdens het nazibewind op grote schaal kunstvoorwerpen geroofd. In 1944 heeft Nederland wetgeving ingevoerd op grond waarvan geroofde eigendommen konden worden teruggeëist. Nederland heeft in 2001 een Restitutiecommissie opgericht om slachtoffers van kunstroof een nieuwe

mogelijkheid te bieden om roofkunst terug te eisen. In zijn lezing zal Van Vliet ingaan op het Nederlandse beleid ten aanzien van restitutie, procedures aangespannen in de Verenigde Staten, en het debat over teruggave van voorwerpen die in eerdere perioden zijn geroofd of weggehaald, bijvoorbeeld uit voormalige koloniën.

The eminent Dutch-born sculptor and Holocaust survivor Maurice Blik talks to journalist and Maastricht University alumnus York Membery about being interned in the notorious WWII concentration camp, Bergen-Belsen.

Born into a Jewish family in Amsterdam in 1939, both his grandmother and his baby sister died at Belsen, while his father was murdered at Auschwitz. They were among the more than 100,000 Dutch Jews to perish in the Holocaust. Blik, a past president of the Royal British Society of Sculptors, is the author of The Art of Survival.

York Membery is a regular contributor to BBC History Magazine, the Daily Mail and the Sunday Times in the UK. He took a History PhD at Maastricht University.

With music of the Cassiopeia Collective. Isabel Rico (flute and piano) and Irina Loskova (soprano) will play songs from a.o. Duparc, Richepin.

This interview is organised on the occasion of Nationale dodenherdenking, Remembrance of the Dead. On this day, we commemorate all the civilians and members of the armed forces of the Kingdom of the Netherlands who died in the Second World War, as well as in wars or peacekeeping missions since WWII.

Professor of Violence in Dependency Relationships at Avans Hogeschool and Police Academy, Head of research at the Dutch National Expertise Centre for Honour-related Violence

Every 8 days on average, a woman is murdered in the Netherlands because she is a woman. This puts the Netherlands top of the list in Europe. This type of murder, also known as femicide, is rarely

committed on impulse. In many cases, the perpetrator is a partner or ex-partner. There is an increasing focus on femicide and its consequences.

In this lecture, expert Janine Janssen deals with the following questions in depth. What exactly is femicide? What is the usual pattern that leads to murder and who are the perpetrators? Can femicide be prevented? And: how is it different from gender-related violence in general, and why is it important to keep paying attention to this type of violence as well?

Shebang en psychiater Glenn Helberg

Locatie wordt later bekend gemaakt Op uitnodiging van Shebang, een nomadische ontwikkelplek in Amsterdam ZuidOost voor creatieve makers en denkers, heeft psychiater Glenn Helberg 5 programma’s gecureerd over de geschiedenis van Suriname en de Antillen met een accent op het slavernijverleden. Hij ging op zoek naar (persoonlijke) verhalen die laten zien hoe een systeem van verdeel en heers werd opgetuigd en nog tot vandaag de dag invloed heeft. Trauma’s worden van generatie op generatie doorgegeven. Samen met theatermakers, dansers, kunstenaars en muzikanten gaf hij vorm aan deze verhalen en geschiedenis.

Het vierde programma uit de reeks is nu in Maastricht te zien. Op deze multidisciplinaire avond worden we door de performers Junadry Leocaria, Gregory Shaggy Albertzoon, Laurindo Andrea en Adeiye Tjon meegenomen naar Curaçao. Zij onderzoeken met hun dans en spoken-word hoe taal als instrument is ingezet om verdeeldheid systematisch voort te zetten, evenals hoe dit doorwerkt in toegang tot sociale posities en colorisme. Zij gaan in gesprek over de blijvende veerkracht die getraceerd kan worden in verhalen van heldendaden om deze gezamenlijk te voelen en tot ons te nemen.

Dit programma kwam tot stand in samenwerking met Alydia Wever, Fré Calmes, Raul Balai en Kimberley Smit.

Met Glenn Helberg, de makers en performers is er na afloop een gesprek.

Glenn Helberg is een Curaçaos-Nederlands psychiater en activist. Als medeoprichter van het Expertisecentrum Transculturele Therapie kijkt Helberg naar wat de mens vormt, zoals taal, historie en cultuur. De dominante westerse psychiatrie is voor Helberg niet voldoende om zijn patiënten te behandelen, die betrekt te weinig alle relevante contexten. Denk daarbij bijvoorbeeld aan cultuur, geschiedenis, familie, religie en seksualiteit, of het koloniaal trauma dat van generatie op generatie een rol speelt.

De avond tegen de draad wordt georganiseerd ter ere van het voormalig hoofd van Studium Generale, Jacques Reiners, die in april 2022 overleed. We hebben met pijn afscheid moeten nemen. Hij was tot 2018, bijna 40 jaar lang, de inspirator en initiator van prachtige programma’s en festivals, waaronder de veel gememoreerde Avond(en) van het woord. Na zijn afscheid van de universiteit bleef hij betrokken vanuit zijn Bureau Tegendraadse Activiteiten. Met deze avond houden we Jacques’ tegendraadse natuur in ere.

The return of the nation state is said to be the foremost geopolitical phenomenon of our time. Gone is the commitment to globalisation and Europeanisation. National borders are being reinforced, and politicians promising to “protect” citizens from migrants, external regulations, and “alien” cultures are winning elections. The Council of the EU is already dominated by sovereigntist politicians, and the forthcoming elections to the European Parliament may well reinforce the renaissance of nations, states and walls in Europe.

In his Schuman Lecture, Zielonka will ask whether the ongoing rebound is likely to

live up to its promises in the era of intense connectivity and interdependence generated by digital technologies. His conclusions will suggest a Europe of networks emerging from the ashes of sovereigntist nostalgia.

Jan Zielonka is professor of politics and international relations at the University of Venice, Cá Foscari, and Emeritus Professorial Fellow at St Antony's College, University of Oxford. He is also associated with the University of Warsaw, the College of Europe in Bruges and the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute in Florence. In the 1980s-1990s, he taught at the University of Leiden, and he still contributes articles to NRC Handelsblad. Zielonka has produced nineteen books. In his latest The Lost Future: And How to Reclaim It, he makes a case for a new politics of time and space. Why is the distribution of time and space so unequal?

Schuman Lecture

Every year, Maastricht University and the City of Maastricht jointly organise this lecture in commemoration of Robert Schuman and the Treaties of Rome (1957) and Maastricht (1992). Robert Schuman (1886-1963) was the French Minister of Foreign Affairs and co-founder of the European Union.

Studium Generale and Opera Zuid are teaming up to offer students a unique opportunity to go to the opera – at a quarter of the normal price!

From ingenious disguises to secret dates; the clichés of love are presented with a twist in the double bill La scala di seta / Il signor Bruschino by bel canto grandmaster Gioacchino Rossini. In these two operas, the young Rossini first showed his grandiose Romantic style. He composed his witty, energetic music to the comic stories of Giuseppe Maria Foppa.

Although all the secret loves and devious schemes in both one-act plays cause plenty of chaos and laughable commotion, everyone eventually declares their love to the right person. This also applies to the director Morcos Darbyshire, who says, ‘For me, these operas are a kind of love letter to Rossini himself… The composer

created real gems, and that at the age of twenty’. A comical ‘feel-good’ performance not to be missed!

The opera will be performed in Italian with Dutch and English surtitles. Prior to the opera, there will be an introduction in English at 18.30.

De Universiteit Maastricht zet de deuren open voor iedereen die nieuwsgierig is en zich graag onderdompelt in een avond vol avontuur. Maak kennis met de nieuwste onderzoeken van de universiteit, trakteer jezelf op concerten, (straat-)theater, dans en kunst en geniet tussendoor van een drankje. Het wordt weer moeilijk kiezen met meer dan 60 activiteiten per avond.

Next season, Studium Generale starts again with the PAS Festival. This free festival offers you two evenings full of Pleasure, Art and Science. Duur / Duration Collegereeksen: 19.30 tot 21.30 uur, met een korte pauze na een uur. Lezingen: 20.00 tot 21.30 uur, tenzij met pauze, dan is 22.00 uur de eindtijd. Film & Talk: 19.30 uur, de eindtijd is afhankelijk van de lengte van de film.

Toegang / Admission

Tenzij anders staat aangegeven, zijn de activiteiten gratis toegankelijk. Reserveren is mogelijk via onze website. Unless announced otherwise, the activities are free of charge. Reservations are possible through our website.

Opnames / Recordings

Bij programma’s waar opnames worden gemaakt, kan het publiek in beeld komen.

Mocht u dit niet willen, geef dit dan s.v.p. bij aanvang aan bij de Studium Generale medewerker die de avond begeleidt.

Vol / Full

We moeten ons aan de brandweervoorschriften houden en kunnen niet meer mensen in de zaal laten dan toegestaan.

We must adhere to the fire regulations and we cannot let more people in the room than permitted.

Garderobe / Cloakroom

De garderobes op de UM zijn niet bewaakt. Het Studium Generale is niet verantwoordelijk voor diefstal of beschadiging van goederen. The cloakrooms at the UM are not guarded. Studium Generale is not responsible for theft or damage to goods.

Parkeren / Parking

Tijdens de activiteiten op de Tongersestraat 53 en de Minderbroedersberg 4-6 kan er gratis worden geparkeerd (bij de slagboom melden). De parkeerplaats sluit een kwartier na afloop van de activiteit. Haal uw auto tijdig weg!

During the activities at Tongersestraat 53 and Minderbroedersberg 4-6 it is possible to

park for free (report at the barrier). The parking lot closes fifteen minutes after the end of the activity. Get your car away in time!
