The centre is to be a place where students and staff can explore ideas and share opinions safely. It’s important to have an open academic culture, in which we can reflect on difficult issues in talks, debates and discussions. This gives insight into other people’s perspectives, stimulates engaged citizenship and is a condition of social and cultural progress. The centre has been set up for an open university community that embraces inclusivity, transparency and accessibility, and it welcomes a broad range of individuals; people from different backgrounds, and with various perspectives and interests.
Through crises and wars, contrasts become bigger and bigger, a phenomenon that also seems to be playing out in the changing political landscape in the Netherlands, which is undergoing strong polarisation. Two years ago, our programming already focused on the theme of gaps, in the hope of also building bridges. However, I get the feeling that the gaps are growing and that we’re being asked to choose sides more and more often. Although this may be necessary to underline the importance of something and bring about change, it can also be dangerous, as you don’t have to bother any more about understanding the other side of the gap. However shaky they sometimes are, Studium Generale aims to continue building bridges and making the connections. It’s something we like to get our teeth into.
It’s intended to be a democratic and academic centre, where scholars and students can explore their ideas and express their opinions without fear of reprisal. This freedom is essential. Argumentation is founded on intellectual exercises and a variety of perspectives are juxtaposed.
The university should also be a place where we can enter into dialogue with one another and share opinions at an academic level. Studium Generale provides an opportunity to do so through lectures and debates, and through the addition of a dialogue centre in 2024.
Studium Generale will give shape to this centre, and students will be the driving force behind it. Students and staff can go there with initiatives that revolve around dialogue. Take events like debates, moral deliberation and talks, for instance, but also meetings in a smaller context. In this way, the centre hopes to contribute to a better understanding of one another and each other’s points of view, and to the development of skills involved in conducting an academic dialogue.
This new initiative was already announced in the New Year speech by
Rob van Duijn Head of Studium Generale Office
Fortunately, in view of the interest shown by the public and the valued reactions, it seems we’re not a voice in the wilderness.

Dr. Lennart Soberon Postdoctoral researcher, Vrije Universiteit Brussel Everyone’s a critic! And why shouldn’t they be? In a culture filled with stories and images, we are constantly asked to decode, deconstruct and negotiate meaning. As the most popular visual medium of the 21st century, cinema is especially sensitive to discussions relating to its role as an arbiter of truth and a conduit for ideology. Since it not only records, but mostly represents the world, every aspect of a film is a small reordering of the world, in a way. These artistic choices have consequences for what is deemed truthful, aesthetic and even moral within society, raising questions of whose right it is to tell which type of story – and for what reasons. After all, in the world of cinema, nothing is ever what it seems.

ORGANISED CRIME In this series, we look at different aspects of organised crime in the Netherlands. Criminal groups engage in various organised crime activities, mostly related to drug production and trafficking (cannabis, synthetic drugs and cocaine). The major Dutch ports, particularly Rotterdam, serve as key hubs for illegal activities. Money laundering and cybercrime also contribute to the complexity of the underworld. The country's strategic location, advanced infrastructure and tolerant policies create an environment that is conducive to criminal enterprises. Law enforcement agencies, however, actively collaborate with other (public and private) partners, both nationally and internationally, to combat and prevent these activities, employing advanced technology and intelligence-sharing to disrupt organised crime networks operating within the Dutch borders.

We know so much about the devastating realities of gendered oppression in the present, but how did patriarchy first become embedded in societies all over the globe? Investigating the latest developments in science, anthropology and archaeology, author Angela Saini paints the complex history of how elite men managed to accumulate so much power, and explains why there is nothing inevitable about male domination. Far from being natural, patriarchies are instead long, slow grifts.

POLITICAL APOLOGIES ACROSS CULTURES In recent decades, there has been a considerable rise in the number of apologies offered by states for injustices and human rights violations. But are such gestures a viable reconciliatory tool and do they have a universal potential to redress injustice or restore harmony? Or do people across cultures have different notions about what political apologies mean, what purpose they serve or how they can or should be expressed?
TUE 26 MARCH, 20:00 Auditorium, Tongersestraat 53 Prof. Juliette Schaafsma Professor of cultures in interaction, Tilburg University Juliette Schaafsma investigates how different cultures view political apologies, whether there are cross-cultural differences and how these are valued, interpreted and expressed. In this research, she looks at the role of cultural values such as collectivism and individualism, and norms like honour and loss of face. The research extends over fifteen countries and five continents.
