Cox Market Vice-President Kim Rowell Announces Local Cox Service Expansion

For hundreds of Douglas, Washington, Cass, Dodge and Sarpy County residents set to receive Cox high-speed internet for the first time, a new independent survey says an improvement in quality of life is expected to soon follow.

In January, a close collaboration between Cox Communications and Nebraska Broadband Bridge Program (NBBP) resulted in a $2.4 million grant award, that when matched with Cox’s own $1.3 million investment, will help Cox bring vital connectivity to more than 500 households in those counties surrounding the Greater Omaha Metro area in 2025. However, reliable high-speed internet is only the beginning.

Cox recently expanded its fiber network to reach more than 50,000 households in Arizona, Florida, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Virginia that were previously unserved or underserved. Now, a newly released independent survey of nearly 6,000 households in those new Cox areas found it drove significant impact by stimulating economic growth, narrowing the education gap and encouraging younger generations to remain in their communities with greater prospects of remote learning and working. Exciting Things Happening for Bellevue Chamber of Commerce & Community

Diane Bruce, President and CEO, and Sarah Dighans, Director of Community Engagement, spent most of 2023 reconnecting with chamber members and reestablishing a calendar of worthwhile networking opportunities and events. Thanks to the dedicated support of several volunteer planning committees, four chamber signature events and 16 networking-based events took place from May to December.

The momentum gained in 2023 continues to roll in the first couple months of 2024. Leadership Bellevue will kick off in March. Tell us a little about your business.Huffman Engineering (HEI) is a system integrator that provides Controls and Automation services to highly regulated industries such as pharmaceuticals and utilities like water and wastewater. Our main focus is to assist companies by programming new processes to help make their systems operate more efficiently.

How did you get started in the business? - I was brought into Huffman Engineering, Inc. (HEI) by my friend Alex Flamme. She highlighted the small business atmosphere and how well everyone in the company got along and worked together as a team.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - The biggest challenge I’ve faced was having to change my daily routine from school life to work. Gone were my days only spending threefour hours in a classroom learning. I now had to use that knowledge to focus on problem solving issues from customers and passing that experience off to the next generation.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?

- The biggest turning point in my life would be my first day of college. It was the first time that I wasn’t relying on my parents’ protection and guidance. I had to start experiencing life for myself and I realized that the world is a lot more expensive than a teen would know.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I like to spend my time in the garage working to restore my 1986 Ford Mustang. When I’m not looking to get my hands dirty, I will pass the time reading novels, my favorite genres being Historical Fiction and Mystery.

If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - One word I would use to describe myself would be observant. If I have the time, I like to spend it looking at the finer details and patterns making sure that no information is overlooked.

What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life? - My greatest talent that I rarely get to use is that I’m a pretty good sketcher. A small part of my career is to assist our drafting team with designing layouts for control panels. I use that as an opportunity to sketch a layout of what I believe would work best for the project as well as staying involved with the revisions before the panel is built.

Which talent would you most like to have? - One talent I would love to have would be to play guitar. I love listening to the guitar solos in classic rock songs and dream of having that ability to shred like those legends.

If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - Another profession I would love to be a successful in would be an Artist. I always wanted to express my creativity to others, but also use it in a way that seems functional and can still help solve problems people face through their everyday lives.

What is your favorite local Omaha restaurant? - My favorite restaurant would have to be Mama’s Pizza. Especially the one off Saddle Creek. My family has been going there ever since I was a kid. They have delicious pizza and the best onion rings in town (in my opinion).

Tell us a little about your business. - I work for Flood Communications, locally known as Telemundo Nebraska TV and KBBX Radio Lobo 97.7FM. We have statewide Spanish and English Radio and TV stations. We have the only local Spanish language radio and TV stations covering most of the state and Western Iowa. Our English TV network, News Channel Nebraska, covers local High School sports LIVE year-round and recently had the SuperNovas volleyball team LIVE! Besides Omaha/Lincoln, we have radio stations in Norfolk, Beatrice, Columbus, Nebraska City, Hastings, Grand Island, Kearney, Sidney, Gordon and Valentine.

How did you get started in the business? - I graduated from Kansas State University in Journalism and Mass Communications and a minor in Advertising. I started off at advertising agencies and they all pushed me to television or radio ad sales.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?Gender is still a big issue in the Broadcast World. Moving up, I had to work a lot harder to get to the top.

What has been your most important achievement professionally?

- I was on the National Board of Directors for American Women in Radio and Television for four years and on the National Television Bureau for another four years. As a member of these, I had influence on many policies and met with politicians on different women and/or broadcast issues. Fun fact, I was able to meet with President Clinton at one point.

Tell us a little about your family. - I grew up on a farm in NE Kansas. Most of my family is still around that area. My brother and nephew took over the family farm. I married my college Sweetheart (25 years later) and moved here for him from Las Vegas.

- There are many…I have worked for a lot of major companies and in cities across the USA. I went to work for Flood Communications six years ago and have to say, they are the best company I have worked for. They not only care about their employees, but clients and do amazing innovative marketing for clients. My only regret is that I didn’t find them earlier in my career-they are great to work for!

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I do like to golf, go hiking, photography, graphics, travel and help my mom with Family history research.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - That I met with President Clinton in the Oval Office.

Who inspires you? - Have to say my mom. She is 92 and still mows her yard, has more energy than me and knows and remembers everyone. She remembers people I knew in my life that I don’t remember anymore. She is amazing.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - “Don’t sweat the small stuff.” I used to worry about all the little details and my old boss told me this….helps a lot.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - With Creative Hair Design, the biggest challenge has been learning about a completely different industry, and understanding what the service providers need to be successful in their business.

Tell us a little about your family. - I’m married to my wife Taylor, and we have a two-year-old boy, Brecken.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - Taking on the task of learning about Creative Hair Design’s business. Not only am I learning about the industry, but also learning about what my father, John, has done all these years to create the business he has today.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - On an off day, I love spending time with my son and working on projects around my house. Especially now, as he is reaching the age where he is very curious and wants to help and be a part of whatever it is that I am doing.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I’ve driven race cars since I was six years old. Starting out in go karts and progressing to road course prototype race cars by the age of 15. I’ve also started taking pilot lessons to earn my private license one day.

Who inspires you? - Scott Dixon, a very successful IndyCar driver, who is also a very strong family man. Along with, Tony Robbins. What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - My favorite quote is from Tony Robbins. He described fear at a seminar by saying, “FEAR, it can either mean False Evidence Appearing Real, or F*** Everything And Run. You decide in each moment of your life, which version you live by.”

If you had a theme song, what would it be? - “Marley” by Kenny Chesney.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? - The ability to fly.

Tell us a little about your business. - First Direct is a marketing systems provider that is on a mission to transform businesses with the right information, insights and solutions to empower today’s business owners’ growth and success. How did you get started in the business? - I started back in 1997 at American Business Information diving deep into the data side of marketing, then in 2005 I started First Direct and have had the distinct opportunity to work with several major national brands develop better audience targeting, strategies and solve unique business challenges. I look at this as only just beginning.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - I think challenges of growing a team have been some of the most challenging, we have both staff here in the USA and overseas, creating a community that brings the right people, keeps them aligned and maturing personally, professionally and financially so that they are finding real connection to what they do to help clients and the goals they want to achieve. This process alone, which is always being refined is a challenging process for any professional.

What has been your most important achievement professionally?

- When I look at the impact what we are doing for our clients, and how that translates to their employees and communities that is an achievement that both my team and I thrive on. We have seen some remarkable results over the years such as one client seeing over 1500% ROI and being able to open two more locations just because of the impact of what we do.

Tell us a little about your family. - I have an amazing wife, and two beautiful children (a son and a daughter). My wife Audrey, also works at First Direct leading our Client Marketing Support team, my son is a freshman at UNO and works part time at First Direct helping on client and internal copy development.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I love to go motorcycle riding, flying and sailing. So, depends on if I just have a day off I’ll go flying, if I got more time you’ll find me in the BVI sailing.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - Well I hinted at it above, I am a private pilot and also certified for sail boats and catamarans. What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - “Nothing to it but to do it!” This statement just drives home the point of how important it is to simply take action, the ability for someone to take action is 100% in their control.

Tell us a little about your business. - Holidynamics, Inc. is a designer, manufacturer, and supplier of commercial-grade holiday lighting and décor. Tell us a little about your family. - I come from a large extended family in Omaha. Lots of siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews! I have an amazing wife, son and daughter. They are very supportive of my career and love the holidays just as much as I do.

There hasn’t been a more rewarding role that I have had in my entire life. Who inspires you? - My family inspires me. They are my motivation! I feel that it is important to support the community in which you live and conduct your business. The Greater Omaha Chamber has done a lot to attract new businesses to our city as well as support and promote the growth of existing businesses.

What is your favorite movie? - The 12 Days of Giving – it was a Christmas movie filmed in the city of Fremont, Nebraska. My daughter had a role in the movie as a young figure skater.

Tell us a little about your business. - “You bring the party, we bring the fun!” FotoFunSpot (FFS) is the ultimate photo booth experience for any event. We have so many fun options to choose from and the best team (I like to call us a family) to make it all happen.

How did you get started in the business? - A friend introduced me to the company a year ago and I have been having a blast and getting way more involved ever since. Loving every minute!

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?Balancing mom life and work life! Before starting with FFS, I was a stay-at-home mama for 10 years. It has been a big change for my family and I but I couldn’t be more grateful for this job.

Tell us a little about your family. - I am a married mom of three kiddos, one corgi and an orange tabby cat. My life is hectic and wonderful all rolled up into one.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - Becoming a mom. I have been pushed and pulled in ways I never thought possible and have come to realize how much I can actually accomplish and handle at a time.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Baking and crochet! My kids and I also love to go on hikes with our dog to explore. We also love to play board games.

Who inspires you? - My mom, always. With a sick dad and being his caretaker, she is such an image of strength, courage and faith for me.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” -Maya Angelou. My goal in life is to make everyone around me feel like they are being wrapped in a warm hug or in the warmth of the sunshine. You never know what someone is going through, and making them feel loved or cared for could be just what they need.

If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Caring.

If you had a theme song, what would it be? - "Biscuits" by Kacey Musgraves.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? - Teleportation for sure. I’d never have to pay for flights again! Disneyland, here I come!

Which talent would you most like to have? - I’d love to have a great singing voice! My husband and I love going to Reno’s for karaoke when we can. It is such a blast to get together with our friends and sing our hearts out.

What is your favorite movie? - The Devil Wears Prada is always a go-to along with The Princess Diaries. Can you tell I really like Anne Hathaway?

What is your favorite TV show? - This is a tough one. I’d probably have to say Friends. I can’t count how many times I’ve watched the series from start to finish.

Boesen, a Nebraska creative, has worked with NCF on numerous projects in the past, including asset mapping and the “Dream Switch” song cycle. Boesen has penned numerous plays and served as the lead of Nebraska Wesleyan University’s playwriting program. She is also the co-founder of Blixt Arts Lab, a Lincoln-based arts nonprofit dedicated to strengthening community, sparking curiosity and celebrating creativity through live theater and project-based education.

As NCF’s newest Affiliated Fund Development Coordinators, Ries and TroyerMiller will work with volunteer leaders to build community awareness, conduct fundraising efforts and increase community impact through grantmaking and citizen engagement.

Ries will serve as the Affiliated Fund Development Coordinator for north central Nebraska, where she has extensive nonprofit and fundraising experience. She served as the executive director for the Valley County Health System Foundation for a cumulative 12 years, where her responsibilities included fundraising, grant writing, marketing, public relations, donor stewardship and event coordination. Most recently, she was the Executive Director of Valley County Economic Development and the Ord Chamber of Commerce.

Troyer-Miller joins NCF as an Affiliated Fund Development Coordinator for central Nebraska, bringing a bevy of nonprofit, community-building and mediation expertise. Before joining NCF, she served as Director of Community Impact for Heartland United Way. Prior to that, she worked as a Trainer for Nebraska Mediation Association and as a conflict specialist for Central Mediation Center. Several nonprofit organizations serving South Omaha have joined in unity to catalyze transformational change and long-lasting economic impact through the North and South Omaha Recovery Grant program administered by the Department of Economic Development. Project partners include Canopy South, Girls Inc., One World Community Health Centers, Latino Center of the Midlands, Lending Link, Latino Economic Development Council and The Simple Foundation.

After years of community engagement, project development and collaboration, Canopy South and their partners have been awarded $64 million in state funding to catalyze economic development.

The collaborative effort is full of a diverse range of projects, each with its own unique size and scope, and spanning various sectors such as healthcare, business and economic development, youth and adult education, housing, infrastructure and tourism. Educare of Omaha, Inc. Receives Grant for Reading Program

Did you know the building blocks for reading proficiency are grounded in language developed in the first three years of life? Research shows that reading to children is a wonderful way to increase vocabulary and literary skills.

“Our Read & Play Program promotes early literacy skills in our young students,” Educare of Omaha, Inc. Executive Director Rafel O. Hart said. “The program increases frequency of reading at home and uses follow-up reading activities to promote connection between parents and children.”

Through Read & Play, each child receives a free bilingual and developmentally appropriate book, and parents receive strategies on how to read the book to their child and engage in activities related to the book theme.

The Omaha Community Foundation recently awarded a grant from the Creche Childhood Fund for Educare of Omaha, Inc.’s Read & Play Program. Funds will provide books and materials to support children’s literacy skills at home.

“We are grateful for the support from the Creche Childhood Fund that helps our families build an at-home library of books to enjoy again and again, while creating memories reading and playing together,” Hart said.

March is National Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) Awareness (NIDDA) Month. The YMCA of Greater Omaha Shares 2023 Community Impact

The YMCA is proud to announce the success of their 2023 programs, services and the collective impact had on the greater Omaha community.

Thousands of members are living healthier lives because of the YMCA, providing wellness resources and support. Over 3,000 free Get Started Appointments were completed with Wellness Coaches, while 291 individuals actively participated in community-based wellness programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA, Weight Loss program and Brain & Body initiatives.

Over 15,000 young people experienced teamwork and character development through youth sports, including eSports. Moreover, 1,569 school-age youth discovered connection and community in engaging summer day camp programs.

Safety took center stage as 4,821 youth learned essential water safety practices and participated in swim lessons. In addition, 421 children received invaluable education and care in YMCA Early Learning Centers.

The YMCA has a significant impact on seniors, with 18,244 members gaining access to low-impact exercise and social programs. Importantly, over $1 million in financial assistance was awarded to ensure critical access to YMCA programs and services, benefiting 7,646 individuals of all ages.

Furthermore, the YMCA collaborated with various organizations to give back to the community through free flu shot clinics, shoe drives, water safety education, welcoming-diversity events, youth support staff training and YMCA Healthy Kids Day.

And this year, Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen declared February 11 as “211 Day” in the State of Nebraska.

The 211 Helpline is an essential service that provides free information and referrals to people in Nebraska and Iowa. It places individuals in touch with the resources and social services they need, and provides connections for food, housing, utilities payment assistance, health care, transportation, child care, mental health crises and more.

In 2023 alone, the 211 Helpline recorded more than 313,000 contacts, with callers’ top five needs being: housing, utility assistance, income assistance, transportation and food. With the ongoing increase in contacts, UWM is grateful for support of the 211 Helpline.

Youth Emergency Services Launches $28M Capital Campaign for YES Residential Campus

Youth Emergency Services (YES), a leading organization providing housing and support to youth experiencing instability, crisis and homelessness, is thrilled to announce the launch of its $28 million capital campaign for the YES Residential Campus.

After 50 years of employing a scattered site housing model, YES is embarking on a transformative journey with the YES Residential Campus. This ambitious project will revolutionize the care provided to young people experiencing homelessness and set the stage for another 50 years of impactful service.

Currently at 63% of the fundraising goal, YES has raised $17.7 million. The organization seeks to secure the remaining $10.3 million through a unique opportunity with a 1:2 challenge match from the Lozier Foundation. With the Lozier Foundation pledging $2 million upon reaching $4 million raised by July 1, multi-year pledges are encouraged to activate this match.

Vision Maker Media and The Ross Media Arts Center are thrilled to announce the second set of films of the Native American Film Series (NAFS) 2024 includes Return of the Sacred Pole and Medicine Woman. The first film tells the story of the Omaha tribe and its reclaiming of the sacred pole, its importance to their heritage, its stay at the Peabody and its return to its owners. What does it take to heal people? That’s the question at the heart of Medicine Woman, a one-hour PBS documentary interweaving the lives of Native healers of today with that of the first Native American doctor, Susan La Flesche Picotte. Screenings are March 11 at 7:10 p.m. at The Ross Media Arts Center.

The NAFS features artist profiles, musical performances, family stories and documentaries on historical figures and traditions. Screenings will take place the second Monday of each month in 2024. Did you know MICAH House has its very own Girl Scout Troop?! Troop #64224 “offers the girls an outlet to be creative and connect with others. During the cookie season, the girls will gain confidence, practice leadership skills and learn life skills such as goal setting and problem solving,” said Sam O’Brien, Child Program Specialist.

The troop made a large impact during the 2023 cookie season. Last year, they chose to donate profits from every box sold to Promise 4 Paws, a nonprofit for senior dogs. They sold 2,889 boxes and raised $500 for the charity.

This year, the girls decided to support Humane Pet Services LLC, a humane pet store that only adopts out pets that have been rescued. $1 for every five boxes sold will be donated to Humane Pet Services LLC. Cookies are on sale NOW through the end of March.

In 2019, Pottawattamie County Special Deputy Anthony Kava, Investigator Jim Doty and Deputy Ryan Avis created The Cari Farver Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Community Foundation for Western Iowa to honor Cari Farver. Cari was murdered in 2012, and the case garnered national headlines with coverage from numerous networks, including NBC, Investigation Discovery, ABC, Lifetime and a documentary on Netflix.

The Cari Farver Memorial Scholarship Fund was established at the Community Foundation for Western Iowa, formerly the Pottawattamie County Community Foundation, to honor Cari Farver – a vibrant, talented and caring person from Macedonia, IA. Her friends and family remember Farver as a “courageous spirit” and “love of life” fondly, and the scholarship fund is a tribute to her passion for helping others.

One of several goals for the Cari Farver Memorial Scholarship Fund is to reclaim the narrative surrounding her life and honor her kind and giving nature. Annually, the Cari Farver Scholarship is awarded to a student who is pursuing a career in computer and information technology at Iowa Western.

Bring Camp GOTR to Your Community This Summer

Girls on the Run (GOTR) seeks host sites and coaches to lead Camp GOTR in Metro Nebraska this summer. Camp GOTR combines the best of the traditional Girls on the Run program with all the fun of camp.

Designed for rising thirdthrough fifth-grade girls, Camp GOTR offers two themed curriculum versions. The “Girls Have Heart” curriculum builds friendship skills and the “Girls Have Heart” option focuses on managing emotions. Girls spend a week building friendships, exploring their creativity and playing fun games that keep them moving.

Each half-day week-long Camp GOTR curriculum integrates fun lessons on the theme with physical activity, crafts and skits. Camp GOTR can be delivered at schools, parks or community centers. Most activities take place outside, but an indoor space is required in the event of inclement weather.

Camp Coaches are also needed. Coaching Camp GOTR is a blast. You don’t have to be a runner to be a great coach. You’ll be trained to deliver the curriculum, which includes fun games and activities for a group of 10 to 20 girls. Coaches get a registration discount and GOTR swag for volunteering.

Christian Record Services Ready for Another Summer Camp Season

Do you know someone who is blind or visually impaired? Would they be interested in attending camp next summer with Christian Record Services (CRS)?

Christian Record Services has recently released its roster of summer camp locations as they prepare for another successful summer of camp experiences for children and adults who are blind or experiencing vision loss. This summer, campers may enjoy a plethora of indoor and outdoor activities at summer camps in eight different locations across the country. Activities included horseback riding, archery, water skiing, crafts, cooking and even a zip line over the lake.

A previous camper commented that he was “amazed” at how the camp staff treated the people who were blind, saying “They treated blind people like the rest of the people here. Like human beings.”

Since beginning in 1967, over 50,000 campers have experienced camps through National Camps for Blind Children, a program of Christian Record Services. Each camp is scheduled at a wellequipped site, chosen especially for the standard of excellence and geographical location. Committed staff and counselors are trained to meet the needs of legally blind campers who are between the ages of nine and 65.

The National Association for Women in Construction (NAWIC) is a resource for women in the construction industry and offers its members education, support and networking to help advance their careers in construction, build their technical skills and become leaders. NAWIC Chapter #116 includes Omaha, Lincoln, Council Bluffs and the surrounding areas. Events are on the second Thursday of each month in various locations in the Omaha area. Guests are welcome.

NAWIC hosts a variety of events that serve the community, provides scholarships to men and women pursuing careers in the construction industry via a college education or trade apprenticeship program, hosts educational Lunch-and-Learns for members and more.
