Exciting news for Tesla owners in the Lincoln area! Eustis Body Shop is pleased to announce that the Lincoln Amber Hill location has officially become a Tesla Approved Collision Center. Assemble Lincoln Announces Responses for Downtown Lincoln Convention Center Site Selection RFP

Assemble Lincoln, the standing committee of Lancaster County tasked with the development of the Downtown Lincoln Convention Center, is pleased to announce the receipt of proposals from qualified landowners for the site selection of the new facility. Every spring and fall, HBAL organizes a Parade of Homes for the public, offering potential home buyers a great opportunity to walk through new homes and meet the builders. The Spring Parade begins on Mother’s Day, May 12 and runs through Sunday, May 19. Homes will be open weeknights from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from Noon to 5 p.m.

Tobacco Free Lancaster County (TFLC) had an absolute blast at Inspire Girls 2024 this March! It was all about good vibes, awesome experiences and some serious girl power.

This year's event focused on truly empowering areas including: selfdefense and safety awareness, leadership and career development, arts and creative expression, STEM education and a special focus on body positivity and mental health. April Sampson Cancer Center to Provide Leading-Edge Cancer Care

Progressive, centralized cancer care under one roof is now a reality for patients in April Sampson Cancer Center Nebraska and beyond, with the opening of the April Sampson Cancer Center. This state-ofthe-art facility is a collaboration between Bryan Health and Cancer Partners of Nebraska.

“The April Sampson Cancer Center is completely focused on and designed with patients’ needs at the forefront,” said Russ Gronewold, President and CEO, Bryan Health. “We worked with our cancer patients who’ve experienced care across the country, as well great physicians who gave their time to plan every component.”

In Nebraska, over 75,000 people require cancer care every year. The April Sampson Cancer Center offers advanced technology and treatment within a healing, comfortable environment. The facility provides cancer care under one roof and during one stop, improving upon a system that can involve multiple meetings with several specialists over the course of weeks.

The April Sampson Cancer Center is a 140,000 square foot building and the first structure on the new Bryan South Campus. The project and new campus location were unveiled in late 2020 after John Sampson, President of Sampson Construction, and his daughter, Cori Vokoun, Vice President of Sampson Construction, donated 29 acres of land for the facility. The comprehensive community cancer center is named after April Sampson, John’s wife and Cori’s mother, who lost her life in 2016 after bravely battling breast cancer for decades.

End-of-Year SP Group PC Intern Meme Project

SP Group, P.C. tax season interns recently organized an “Intern Training” session for the team. The team builder was a great opportunity to break up the grind of tax season and to bring some much-needed life and energy into the firm to help them cross the April 15 deadline.

This year’s tax season interns included, from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Jennifer Sedlacek, Addison Priess, Graesyn Buttler, Grant Nickels, Jameson Herzberg and Mikayla Wallace; and from Nebraska Wesleyan University: Bobby Simmons. Together, they conceptualized the “Build a Meme Party” to “educate” all team members on the fine art of building a meme. After a tutorial, each team member was tasked with developing their own meme. Once completed, the compilation of memes were presented and, true to SP’s competitive nature, a winner was declared. Trevin Little walked away with a Scheels gift card and bragging rights.

This “End-of-Year Intern Project” was a terrific opportunity to mix some light-hearted fun in with the serious business of helping their clients with their tax service needs. Lots of laughs were shared capping off another successful intern season.

Meet Wendi Anderson, Director of Outpatient Services at HopeSpoke.

Tell us a little about your business. - HopeSpoke's mission is to inspire healthy futures for children and families through comprehensive behavioral and mental health services. We are celebrating our 75th anniversary this year! The agency was founded in 1949 as the Child Guidance Center, part of a national movement recognizing that young people's mental health needs are different from those of adults. Community Chest (now the United Way of Lincoln and Lancaster County) and the Junior League of Lincoln were visionary in developing what at the time was a highly innovative concept. In 2018 we rebranded as HopeSpoke. Over the past 75 years, we've expanded our programs to meet local needs. Today, HopeSpoke provides Outpatient mental health services; Extended Day Treatment, an after-school program for children ages 5-11 who require a higher level of care; a Therapeutic Group Home for teenage boys; and crisis response services. HopeSpoke therapists are also based within 15 Lincoln Public Schools locations.

While we still primarily serve young people in Lincoln and the surrounding areas, we have expanded to include individuals across the lifespan. We specialize in working with those who have experienced trauma, and we are constantly working to build our skills set and provide the best possible clinical care for everyone we serve.

How did you get started in the business? - I knew in college that I wanted to have a career helping others and ideally with a focus on children. I was a nanny in college and I loved the interactions with the kids in that family and found it easy to connect with them. After I graduated with my undergraduate degree I did some research and identified the career of a therapist and instantly knew that was the trajectory of my career. That lead me to going on to graduate school and obtaining my master’s degree. My field experiences, volunteer work and internships all were working with children, which solidified my desire to find a job where that would be my focus. Child Guidance Center is where I landed my career entry job as a therapist and I have grown my professional career working in our community within this agency.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? - I believe my most important achievement professionally has been growing and developing within the field. There have been so many changes since I started my career related to requirements around documentation, best practices, outcomes, evidence based practices, licensure advancements and how the world views mental health, among many others. Balance is so critical in this field and having a professional network and team to process with and not end up being burnt out is really important. The work can be very challenging and emotionally draining because everything doesn’t always work out as we would like for our clients and families. That can be really hard to walk away from at the end of some days. I have had opportunities within my work at HopeSpoke to grow and develop both clinically and professionally and advance in positions. This has helped me continue to find balance and stay dedicated in the field.

Tell us a little about your family. - This summer my husband, Mark and I will celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. Mark is a teacher in the Lincoln Public School System. Together we have a nine year old son, Grayson, and two ornery dogs. We keep busy doing lots of activities that Grayson is involved in, (mainly sports and music related), different projects around the home-we are always up to something and learning new skills together.

Imagine this: a client fills out a contact form on your website. They book a session, receive a confirmation email, sign a contract or provide background information and pay a deposit without you having to lift a finger.

Or this: a sales rep on your team is out in the field collecting information on potential leads. They add the contact information into the CRM app on their phone. Based on specific criteria that is entered, a task is automatically assigned to the appropriate team member for follow-up before the sales rep gets back to the office. These are things that I can help you get set up for your business. I love talking with the business owner about what they need to accomplish and strategizing with them how we can streamline and automate where possible to ensure a smooth experience for their customers and the business.

How did you get started in the business? - After decades worth of experience in information management, process improvement, operations, and system implementation, I decided I wanted to share that background with others as my own boss. I started out offering general admin services, but quickly realized that it’s systems that light me up.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - As an entrepreneur, the biggest challenge for me has been identifying who are the folks who can really benefit from my services and how can I connect with them. Is it in-person networking? A social media presence?

What has been your most important achievement professionally? - The people I’ve met and the difference I’ve been able to make. As a manager I loved being able to match up an employee with work that really used their skills and interests. In my current role, it’s so rewarding to see people realize the benefits of the tools we put in place.

Tell us a little about your family. - My husband and I have been married 30 years. Our oldest daughter is an engineer in Lincoln and our younger daughter is an entrepreneur living with her husband in Eagle. I’m so blessed that we can frequently get together for board games or events at the Lied or maybe some disc golf.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - Joining the Army where I met my future husband. It’s true that choosing the right partner in life is so impactful! We’ve always supported each other in our endeavors, and I wouldn’t be on this journey of entrepreneurship without him!

What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - I’m very involved with my church; chairing the finance committee, playing the piano and leading out in weekly Bible study. How did you get started in the business? - I got started in commercial real estate at the end of 2014, through a connected family member who worked at Greenleaf. I started my career doing research for the company, and after stepping away for several years to focus on raising my kids, I am back and learning new roles of the business.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? - Getting a call from John Linscott, asking when I’d come back and work at Greenleaf! Upon moving myself and my two kids back to Nebraska the goal was to come back to Greenleaf at some point and the timing aligned well with what I needed. I am glad to be back!

Tell us a little about your family. - I am a mother of two beautiful children, who are my entire world. I was a stay-at-home mom for many years and I was blessed to create such special bonds with both of them. They never fail to make me smile and laugh. My oldest is the ‘man of the house ‘and he holds that role so well by taking the responsibility of helping keep a tidy house, and offering to shovel snow when its so cold outside. I am proud of who they are now and who they are to become.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - Personally, I have been through a lot of difficult things over the last few years that have made a significant impact on my life and the way I feel. Navigating being divorced young and becoming a single mom was not how I pictured mine or my kids lives. However, I have become a stronger version of myself, which is reflected in the love and care I am able to share with not only both of my kids, but myself as well.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Lately, I’ve been spending my days off supporting my oldest in ice hockey and relaxing when I can. We can’t wait for warmer weather; that brings baseball for bubs, sand volleyball for myself, lake days and walks to the neighborhood park with my little family.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I remember getting a water baby for almost every single Birthday and Christmas as a child. I have since passed them down to my own daughter and continue to add to the collection. I have some that are close to 34 years old.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - You glow differently when your confidence is fueled by a belief in yourself instead of validation from others.

If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Truthful.

What is your favorite movie? - Ever since Pitch Perfect came out I have said that is my favorite movie, and although I haven’t watched it in a while, I know that once I do, I’ll be singing along with the movie.

Tell us a little about your business. - Legacy Retirement Communities offer Independent Living and Assisted Living, as well as Memory Care.

How did you get started in the business? - When I was eighteen, I lived near The Legacy on 56th and Pioneers and was in awe of the beautiful waterfall on the northeast corner of the intersection, out in front of the building. I told myself I would like to live there. I soon found out I was too young to live there because it was a retirement community. But I could work there! I already had experience working with seniors as I would help my mother who would take seniors to doctors’ appointments and help clean their homes. It was a true calling for me as I love to serve others and live my life with a purpose.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? biggest challenge professionally has been feeling confident in myself. I sometimes struggle with second guessing myself and over thinking.

What has been your most important achievement professionally?

- My most important achievement professionally has been becoming a leader for those I have the pleasure of working with. I have been with Legacy for almost 27 years, and I believe I have grown into a leader that people can look up to.

Tell us a little about your family. - I have been married to my wife for eight years now. We have a cat, Clyde, and a dog, Onyx, we love them so much. I have an older sister who is married and has two sons. My parents live in Missouri in an Amish Community, and they formerly ran a Bed and Breakfast.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - I would say that one of the biggest turning points in my life was the moment I took the Dining Room Manager position. When I stepped into that role, the leaders I had, and my coworkers, helped me grow both professionally and personally.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - My favorite thing to do on my day off is spend time with my wife and best friends. I love going to the farmers market in the Haymarket. I love going to The Mill for coffee and conversation with my friends. We love to people-watch, and to run into people we know.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - A unique thing about me is I was born in Guam. I was 11 days old when we moved to California – my first plane ride. Although I was born in Guam, I’ve never been and would love to go back sometime in my life.

Who inspires you? - My parents inspire me. They taught me the true meaning of love and have helped me become the person I am today. They have always been there for each other, and for me, no matter what. I get my wit from my dad and compassion from my mom.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - My favorite quote is from the movie A League of Their Own. Jimmy Dugan said, “There’s no crying in baseball.” My dad would say that to me and my sister.

If you had a theme song, what would it be? - My theme song would be “Love Can Build a Bridge” by the Judds.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? - If I could have a superpower, it would be teleportation. I am known to be late most of the time so that would help me out!

What has been your most important achievement professionally? - I also work with our Long Term Care Insurance Policy clients, navigating the insurance policies and helping our clients with the process.

Tell us a little about your family. - I am married to my wonderful husband, Jayden. We have four amazing kids: Zayden (15), Jaxen (12), Adalynn (six), and Paisley (three). In addition to our children, we also have three dogs, two mini cows, two goats, lots of chickens and three bunnies. Our family is always on the go, keeping busy with the kids and their activities.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - Becoming a mother has brought me so much joy, patience and understanding of life. It has taught me to live for the little things, as they turn into big memories.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - A day off? What's that? Haha, I love to stay active with my kids. They keep me busy with their sports and other activities. If we have a free weekend, we enjoy working on our property and growing our funny farm. We also like hiking, being on the water and the Lake of the Ozarks and going antiquing.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I am a family photographer; my business is called Grove Photography. I enjoy capturing authentic and intimate moments between families and loved ones. I have a passion for creating memories to be cherished for generations to come.

Who inspires you? - Single parents who never give up and hustle every day to show up for their kids. The struggle to provide for and be present for your family as a single parent is nothing to be overlooked.

Neither book has to do with leadership which is what I normally read, but they both were quite impactful.

Laura ‘Bird’ Kuhn 'Grateful' to Lead Pro Volleyball Federation’s Inaugural Season

The inaugural year in the Pro Volleyball Federation wrapped-up with Laura “Bird” Kuhn as the interim coach for the Omaha Supernovas. “My whole reason for doing this was to be a part of the first season for our sport and for these athletes,” Kuhn said.

The Omaha Supernovas were one of seven franchises starting from scratch in the country’s lone conventional pro volleyball league — also starting from scratch — and a big dose of unexpected happened after Omaha’s first two matches.

Kuhn was the first assistant hired by coach Shelton Collier, whom she played for at Georgia Tech in the early 2000s. But after starting the season one to one, Collier moved out of the head coaching role and into an advisory position. Kuhn was then tabbed interim coach to finish the season.

Nebraska Community Foundation Announces Two New Hires

Nebraska Community Foundation (NCF) recently welcomed Jean Hinton of Lincoln and Maggie Smith of Albion to its talented team of professionals committed to building stronger communities and a Greater Nebraska.

As the Office and Gift Processing Assistant, Hinton is responsible for managing efficient and accurate gift processing records and procedures, ensuring effective use of information systems and technology specific to donor and volunteer information, providing a wide range of confidential administrative support services for NCF staff and volunteers, as well as assisting in maintaining an efficient office.

Prior to joining NCF, Hinton worked at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in a variety of administrative and supportive roles for a cumulative 16 years. Her experience handling confidential data and helping departments stay organized will be an asset to the NCF team. Hinton obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

Smith joins NCF as the Affiliated Fund Development Coordinator for Northeast Nebraska, where she will work with volunteer leaders to build community awareness, conduct fundraising efforts and increase community impact through grantmaking and citizen engagement.

Smith most recently served as the director of economic development and housing for Albion Economic Development Corporation in Albion, Nebraska. Her work there, combined with her experience as a director of faith formation for Families in Faith Catholic Parishes and as an assistant for the University of Nebraska Extension in Seward County, prepared her for the relationship-building and guidance role she will occupy for NCF affiliated funds in northeast Nebraska. Smith obtained a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education-Leadership and a Master of Science in Leadership Education-Human Resource Development from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Stacia joined SCORE to help clients who want to start a business or already have a small business. Klinkebiel Receives Holder Fellowship to Enhance Sleep, Dreaming Course

Nebraska Wesleyan University awarded Chelsea Klinkebiel, Assistant Professor of Psychology, the annual 2024 Holder Fellowship for Instructional Improvement, to recognize her instructional innovation and teaching excellence.

Klinkebiel will use the award to enhance the curriculum of the "Psychology of Sleep and Dreaming" course, which she will teach this fall. “Students will learn the basics about how we sleep, why we sleep, sleep stages and what makes for effective sleep, both quantity and quality. They will also learn about dreaming.”

The course has traditionally been taught from a learning and memory-focused approach that’s based on cognitive psychology. The new curriculum will integrate clinical aspects, including sleep disorders and treatment and pediatric sleep medicine.

The fellowship funds will help update resources essential for student engagement and learning, including textbooks, research materials and new equipment that will track sleep patterns.

Part of the curriculum will explore the origin of dreams. “There’s not a ton of research in this area, but some of the foundational theories that formed the discipline of psychology focus on dreaming,” she says. “For example, there are many instances where things are brewing in our unconscious and we're not aware, and those come out in our dreams.”

Sheridan is First Husker Elected to National Academy of Education

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Susan Sheridan has been elected to the National Academy of Education.

Sheridan is the first Husker faculty member selected for the honor. She is the George Holmes University Professor of educational psychology and the founding director of the Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families and Schools, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

“The work that I’ve been able to do has only been possible because of the many relationships and partnerships that I’ve been a part of over the past 30-plus years,” she said. “My collaborations with colleagues and students that share in this vision and help push it forward has leveraged our efforts in ways that I could never have imagined.”

Sheridan has been at Nebraska since 1998 after several years at the University of Utah, but she traces her interest in helping schools and families work together to benefit children to her stint as a “baby school psychologist” early in her career. “I realized then that paradoxically, we have to support adults to make a difference in kids’ lives.”

The mission of the National Academy of Education, founded in 1965, is to advance high-quality research to improve education policy and practice. Parents don’t forget to register your middle schooler for a summer camp at Bright Lights! It’s important for children to stay engaged and learning over the summer, and it can be the perfect time for them to meet new people and try a new hobby. Bright Lights is the perfect way to do both.

CASA for Lancaster County Announces MayJune Volunteer Training Schedule

CASA for Lancaster County is seeking volunteers. A training session for new volunteers is set to begin on May 28. This is a six-week training course held on Tuesday nights from 6 to 9 p.m. All training sessions will be held at CASA for Lancaster County, 1141 H St., STE C on the third floor.

CASA volunteers are trained community advocates who are assigned to abused/ neglected children who are in Juvenile Court through no fault of their own.

CASA volunteers have a court order that gives them access to the child and to all their records so that the CASA volunteer can gather information and determine the needs of the child. This is done by interviewing all interested and concerned parties to determine the facts and reviewing all records and documents.

CASA volunteers get to know the child and they communicate the child’s needs and wishes to the judge. CASA volunteers are required to attend approximately 30 hours of pre-service training and 12 hours of in-service (continuing education) annually and are supervised by a CASA staff person.

Friendship Home Announces 22nd Annual Safe Quarters on October 13

On Sunday, October 13, Friendship Home will host its 22nd Annual Safe Quarters event. On this day, hundreds of Friendship Home volunteers will head out to Lincoln neighborhoods to knock on every household door and collect financial contributions for survivors of domestic violence, all while raising awareness of the life-saving services Friendship Home provides.

Safe Quarters is Friendship Home’s largest annual fundraiser. In 2023, over $80,000 was raised, and as a result, Friendship Home was able to save and change the lives of over 1,600 survivors of domestic violence. Tabitha Expands Workforce Development Resources for Nurses

Nonprofit Tabitha’s Workforce Development program is cultivating new pathways for clinical success with the introduction of its Refresher Sessions.

Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) or Med Aides (MAs) whose licenses have lapsed, who are returning to healthcare or simply want to renew their skills are invited to register. In these hour-long sessions, Tabitha’s education experts will provide students with the tools and knowledge needed for CNAs to thrive on written and clinical reinstatement exams, or MAs to complete re-competence.

Additionally, limited openings remain in Tabitha’s upcoming CNA Classes. Each class includes an online-only portion, followed by in-person clinical sessions in Lincoln. Through the Sue Hill Sponsorship Program, tuition and class costs are covered, and completion of the program includes various opportunities to grow further within the Tabitha team.

Matt Talbot Hosting Open House May 30

17 years ago, Carly was a single mother with three daughters ages three, 14 months and a newborn. When returning home from the hospital, Carly was met with an eviction notice, little support and post-partum depression. Carly and her daughters were facing a crisis.

Thankfully, Carly got connected to a housing case manager at Matt Talbot. Together, they worked to set goals, enroll in life skills classes and other programs to accelerate her ability to find housing. Within four months, Carly and her daughters were under the same roof again.

Today, Carly owns a growing barbershop at Von Hair, is married, active in her church community and passionate about giving back. She even volunteers to give haircuts at Matt Talbot and loves listening to people’s stories and sharing her own as she cuts hair.

Stories like Carly's are made possible by gifts from a generous community. Last year, "Give to Lincoln Day'' donations were directed toward a facility expansion project that strengthened the housing program, creating a space for newly housed clients to "shop" for basic household items such as dishes, cleaning supplies, sheets and towels. GOTR combines lessons to foster

social skills and character-development with fun running games to train for a 5K run at the end of each eight-week season. Led by two to three trained coaches, teams of 10 to 20 third- through fifth-/ sixth-grade girls complete a nationally standardized confidencebuilding curriculum.

Lincoln Children's Museum Recaps 2nd Annual Childcare Provider Night April 9

The Lincoln Children's Museum hosted a fun evening of appreciation and support for childcare providers on April 9. With over 200 attendees, the event demonstrated the community's commitment to those who play a vital role in nurturing and educating children in Lincoln and surrounding communities. Childcare Provider Night provided a well-deserved opportunity for providers to unwind and connect with fellow professionals in a festive atmosphere. Attendees were treated to a diverse range of activities, including engaging with resource vendors, enjoying delicious food and drinks and participating in DIY crafts. The event also featured enlightening learning sessions, relaxing yoga sessions and more, ensuring there was something for everyone to enjoy. "The Lincoln Children's Museum is proud to support childcare providers who dedicate themselves to the well-being and development of our community's children," said Mandy Haase-Thomas, M.A., Chief Operations Officer at the Lincoln Children's Museum. Christian Record Services Celebrates the Growth of PhoneFaith

Christian Record Services, Inc. is thrilled to share news about the growth of PhoneFaith as part of its outreach ministry to the blind community.

When Christian Record Services (CRS) acquired PhoneFaith from another nonprofit in 2020, it had approximately 20-30 participants a month. Since then, the program has grown, and in January 2024, there were 217 total participants, peaking during the revivals and other special programs with well-known presenters.

In addition, PhoneFaith is piloting programs in Spanish this spring and summer. The programs will be available on the second Tuesdays of the month, starting on April and continuing through August.

Daily PhoneFaith dial-in presentations offer opportunities to inform and encourage, through mental health and wellness sessions, social meet-and-greet interactions, Bible games and prayer.

PhoneFaith was started by CRS Board Member, Dr. Dexter Thomas, who is blind, as he searched for tangible ways to connect with other people who were blind or visually impaired. It continues today under the leadership of Dr. Leanora Ruff, who organizes and coordinates the volunteer hosts and presenters needed for the weekly presentations.

“It is heart-warming to observe the value of PhoneFaith to participants as they engage with others who experience a similar journey. Camp Quality Heartland is looking for volunteers for their week-long overnight summer camp being held July 7-12 in Fremont. Opportunities are available to be a Camper Companion, Medical Team Member or Support Staff.

This camp is for kids impacted by pediatric cancer and their siblings. Camp Quality provides FREE year-round support activities for children with cancer and their families. Camp activities include: hiking and nature walks, scavenger hunts, archery, swimming and water fun, all-camp games, crafts and tie-dying, campfires and s’mores and so much more! Habitat Offers Home Repairs Program to the Public

TeamMates of Lincoln Reaps 100% on Jersey Mike’s Day of Giving

Habitat for Humanity of Lincoln is now offering their Home Repairs Program for homeowners in Lincoln. This program helps qualifying homeowners with limited incomes to get the repairs and improvements they need so that they can remain safe and comfortable in their homes and rooted in their neighborhoods.

Repairs offered include accessibility modifications (ramps and grab bars), weatherization (windows and insulation), energy efficiency (appliances, water heater, a/c and furnace replacement) and critical repairs (roofs and gutter replacement). Applicants must live in and own the home that needs to be repaired and they must incomequalify. Financing is based on affordability and will consist of a mix of grant funding and no-interest loans.

Catholic Social Services Announces Spring Furniture Drive

Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska (CSS) is asking the public’s help to fulfill an urgent need for donated furniture to assist those in need.

“Requests for furniture are running nearly double the usual demand,” said Katie Patrick, CSS Executive Director. “Those requests come from more than two dozen human service agencies in Lincoln that are trying to help their clients, plus we have a need for used furniture for our own clients.”

Patrick said CSS is one of only a handful of agencies in Lincoln that provide used furniture for free to people that are trying to get back on their feet. “That’s why we are launching our CSS Lincoln Spring Furniture Drive.”

Items most in demand include:

• Bedroom Furniture: such as beds (sizes Queen, Full and Single), chest of drawers and nightstands

• Living Room Furniture: such couches, loveseats, coffee tables, end tables and lamps

• Kitchen tables and chairs

Fresh Start Celebrates Newly Renovated Space

13th Annual Give to Lincoln Day Set for May 30

Fresh Start is buzzing with excitement as they celebrate the newly renovated spaces throughout the shelter. They are nearing the end of their $1.5 million capital campaign goal, with just under 10% left to raise. The residents, staff and board members are pleased with the progress so far. LaCresha Brooks, Development Coordinator, expresses gratitude for the exceptional support received during the campaign, acknowledging the community's strength.

Despite the loud construction, residents are thrilled with the renovations. Monica Zinke, Executive Director of Fresh Start, highlights the importance of modernizing the 90-year-old building to enhance functionality for current and future participants. Safety measures have been improved, upper-level renovations are finished, and the mortgage debt has been cleared.

Ms. Zinke shares “This campaign is increasing our ability to make this feel like a home for our residents. One where they know they belong, and where they can take steps to move forward with the next, healthier phase of their lives.”

There are a few projects pending completion, including the bathroom renovation and painting. Support is still needed to cross the finish line of the campaign and raise the remaining amount.

Lincoln Community Foundation (LCF) recently announced the 13th annual Give to Lincoln Day is set for Thursday, May 30 with the largest match fund in the event’s 12-year history. Coordinated by LCF, Give to Lincoln Day is an online event encouraging donations to support the local nonprofits and causes people care about. The event has raised more than $57 million since 2012.

This year, every participating nonprofit organization will receive a proportional share of the record $650,000 match fund based upon its percentage of total dollars raised, thanks to LCF and many generous sponsors including Presenting Sponsor, West Gate Bank. Extreme weather has increased in frequency and intensity. The Red Cross is responding to nearly twice as many large disasters now compared to a decade ago. Spring weather can lead to severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, damaging winds and flooding. Planning is key to being ready for an emergency. Being prepared is easy, just three short steps away:

1. Get a kit. Get your emergency preparedness kit ready.

2. Make a plan. Talk with household members about what you would do during emergencies. Plan what to do in case you are separated — choose two places to meet — one right outside your home in case of a sudden emergency such as a fire, and another outside your neighborhood in case you cannot return home or are asked to evacuate.

3. Be informed. Know the risks where you live, work, learn and play. Download the free Red Cross First Aid app so you’ll know what to do if emergency help is delayed and the free Emergency app for weather alerts, open Red Cross shelter locations and safety steps for different emergencies. Big Brothers Big Sisters Lincoln (BBBS), is happy to announce the 2nd Annual Big Putt Golf Tournament. The event is scheduled to take place on Friday, May 10, at the beautiful Woodland Hills Golf Course in Eagle, NE. Proceeds from the event will directly benefit the communitybased mentoring program. This exciting tournament aims to raise funds to expand opportunities for Little/Big mentoring matches and increase support for families served by BBBS. A Carriage House Update

CEDARS board members, staff, donors and friends recently gathered at their Pioneers campus to celebrate the official groundbreaking for the home of their newest program, Carriage House!

CEDARS Carriage House will be a home for pregnant and parenting teens who are facing homelessness and could benefit from intensive, wrap-around support to successfully transition to their own apartment or back home to family.

Construction has been moving along at a steady pace since the groundbreaking ceremony, and the 6,800-square-foot building is anticipated to be completed by Fall 2024. Once open, Carriage House will serve up to 24 pregnant and parenting teens each year. Features of Carriage House include four 1-bedroom and two 2-bedroom apartments, as well as common space for youth and office space for staff to provide ongoing supervision and support. In addition to a safe and stable home, teens at Carriage House will receive intensive life skills training in the areas of prenatal care, parenting, nutrition, budgeting, household maintenance, continued education, and access to health care and other resources. Each apartment will include a full kitchen, a washing machine, and a dryer for youth to practice self-sufficiency. Mental health and therapeutic services will also be in place, all designed to prepare youth – and their young families - for a successful future.

Goodwill Helps UNL, Concordia and Wesleyan Students Declutter During Finals

Goodwill Industries Serving Southeast Nebraska, Inc. is teaming up with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Concordia University and Nebraska Wesleyan University for their annual Campus Move-Out Donation Drive.

During the last two weeks of the school year, Goodwill will place donation barrels inside residence halls, so students can conveniently donate their extra clothing, electronics and home goods before they head home for the summer. Concordia students can donate from April 22 to May 5, Wesleyan students can donate from April 26 to May 8 and UNL students can donate from May 8 to May 22.

When students donate to Goodwill, they help change lives through the power of work. The revenue from Goodwill’s thrift stores in Lincoln and York helps fund local programs that assist job seekers as they overcome barriers to employment. In 2023 alone, Goodwill served over 5,000 individuals with employment-related services, such as job skills training, mentorship, mock interviews and more. Thanks to community donors, Goodwill also diverted over 1.4 million pounds of materials from the local landfill. Goodwill is grateful for support from organizations like UNL, Concordia and Wesleyan that make this impact possible.

People’s City Mission Announces 7th Annual “Towel Day” Drive with Don’t Panic Labs

People’s City Mission (PCM) provides a towel to each of their guests when they come in with a projection of helping over 1,600 unduplicated individuals this year, that’s a lot of towels! Towels are an easily overlooked need and PCM is so grateful for Don’t Panic Labs for doing this drive with them every year to make sure each guest has their own towel.

Collection dates are May 13-26. You can drop new or gently used towels, hand towels and wash cloths off at any of the partner locations or you can donate online at pcmlincoln.org (click “Donate Online Today” button, choose “Towel Day 2024” in the Campaign drop down menu), and those funds will directly be used to buy towels. You can also purchase towels from the PCM Amazon Wish List (on their website).

Disability Rights Nebraska to Host Free Event: From Polict to Practice

How do you make decisions? What do you do if you need help with taxes, medical care or auto repairs? You get help from friends, family or experts. Getting help when it is needed is also called Supported Decision Making. We all use it.

Disability Rights Nebraska is hosting a Summit to raise awareness of Supported Decision Making (SDM) as a means to increase self-determination among people with disabilities and the aging population. Self-determination is having the right to make your own choices and set your own goals. Multiple studies show that people with greater self-determination are healthier, more independent, more well adjusted and better able to recognize and resist abuse.

The event will take place August 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center on the UNO campus. Zoom participation available. The event features panel discussions with people with disabilities and family members using the SDM process as an alternative to full guardianship and a keynote address by national SDM expert Jonathon Martinis.

Sessions on policy development are aimed at making the process readily accessible and effective in Nebraska and examining Nebraska’s current legal guardianship structure. The Summit is free of charge and open to anyone interested. Registration required. Attendees are welcome to attend their choice of sessions. Lunch is provided, vendor tables are available.

The Malone Center Breaks Ground for New Building

The Malone Center is transforming its 14,000 sq. ft. building that stood as a staple in Lincoln for nearly 70 years. The new 55,000 sq. ft. building projected to be complete by 2025 will be built to withstand 100 more years of service to the people of Lincoln.

CEO of The Malone Center, John Goodwin, says the demolition and construction of the old building aren’t stopping their programs. He said if anything it’s lit a fire inside those with the center to get out into the community. “We’re more than just a building,” Goodwin explained. “Our job is to be out in the community, bringing that community center to them.”

Goodwin said they are temporarily relocating some of their offerings like their maternal wellness program to First United Methodist. Their Preschool program will be moved to City Impact.

According to the CEO, the Malone Center is excited to serve up longawaited updates for people who need it. He says the $25 million project will feature a large gymnasium with a state-of-the-art scoreboard, as well as classrooms to carry out programs.

Over 150 individuals converge to Omaha area lake site to qualify for August’s 50 Mile March.

On Saturday, April 13, the 50 Mile March Foundation welcomed over 150 individuals to Chalco Hills Recreation Area to ruck march 15 miles to qualify for their signature event to be held in August 2024.

The 50 Mile March is a 50 mile ruck march from the steps of the Nebraska State Capitol to Omaha, Nebraska to raise awareness and funds to support our community's Veterans. Founded in 2020, the March began as six individuals walking and fundraising. Today, over 150 walkers, nearly 100 volunteers and even more supporters helped execute this exciting community event. Participants trained, fundraised, and built a community in preparation of 22 hours and over 120,000 steps each August. This year's march, Operation Noble Watchman, will be held August 24-25.

The American Stroke Association Focuses on Defeating Stroke Through Education and Collaboration

Stroke can happen to anyone, at any age. In fact, globally about one in four adults over the age of 25 will have a stroke in their lifetime. During American Stroke Month, the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association, as part of a nationally supported collaboration with HCA Healthcare and the HCA Healthcare Foundation, will teach people everywhere that stroke is largely preventable, treatable and beatable.

A stroke happens when normal blood flow in the brain is interrupted. When parts of the brain don’t get the oxygen-rich blood they need, those affected brain cells die. In cases of stroke, response time matters. Unfortunately, most adults in the U.S. don’t know the F.A.S.T warning signs of a stroke. Here are six ways you can act now to beat stroke:

A large majority of strokes can be prevented through education and lifestyle changes such as moving more, healthy eating, managing your blood pressure, getting healthy sleep and quitting smoking and vaping.

The F.A.S.T. Experience (www.stroke.org/fast-experience) is a new digital tool launched by the American Stroke Association this month that engages users in a virtual experience educating them on what the warning signs of a stroke look, feel and/or sound like. By helping users to experience the stroke warning signs in a simulated way that is both educational and engaging, the expectation is that they will retain this information longer and share it with family and friends.

By simulating the symptoms of a stroke – Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, and Time to call 911 – the general public, caregivers, family members, and friends can better understand what stroke patients experience and equip them to spot stroke warning signs and help save a life in the future.

Angels Among Us Named Runza’s Dine Out Partner

Angels Among Us was honored to be chosen as the Dine Out Partner for Runza’s Lincoln Co-op locations on March 26 raising just shy of $10,000! 10% of sales were donated that day from 25 locations in the following communities: Lincoln, Beatrice, Crete, David City, Fairbury, Geneva, Milford, Seward, Syracuse, Waverly and York.

The co-op of Runza owners voted to support Angels Among Us’ mission and engaged their staff and networks to promote the day and make it a success. All Runza staff wore stickers, put fliers in every bag, placed yard signs at their locations and helped to spread awareness leading up to the day. Angels Among Us had volunteers are various locations greeting folks and thanking them for their support. In addition to many people participating by dining or going through the drive-through, corporate partners stepped in to support. If you want to be part of the popular ancestry search trend, you may not need to look any further than the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia (AHSGR) which is now a FamilySearch Affiliate Library. This means it has access to more genealogy resources to help you make more family discoveries. FamilySearch is a world leader in family history.

There are only a few hundred affiliate libraries in the country. The designation means local patrons will now have greater and more convenient access to the wealth of genealogical resources available through FamilySearch. The popular web service has over six billion searchable names and two billion images of historical genealogical records—and you get the helpful assistance of library staff.

YMCA of Lincoln to Host Swimsuit Drive to Support Area Youth

The YMCA of Lincoln is set to host its fourth annual community-wide swimsuit drive from May 8 to 22, collecting new and gently used swimsuits for more than 150 children enrolled in grant-based swim lessons this summer. The opportunity to teach youth how to swim, along with lifesaving water safety skills is made possible by a swimming lesson grant through Y-USA and in partnership with Lincoln Public Schools and Lincoln Community Learning Centers.

“Two of the biggest barriers families face when wanting to provide swim lessons for their children are transportation and cost – both for the lessons and swimsuits,” shared Tabetha Burnham, Aquatics Director at the Northeast YMCA. “As the community’s leader in swim instruction, the Y is grateful to be in a position to teach children of all ages and from all backgrounds the importance of water safety while helping overcome fears.”

To participate, donors can drop off swimsuits at any of the four Lincoln YMCA locations. Sizes needed are school age XS-XL for boys and girls (one-piece preferred). Swimsuits will be distributed to students attending Lincoln’s Community Learning Centers, with swim lessons beginning in early June. YMCA and community members donating swimsuits will be entered to win one free session (six classes) of group swimming lessons at the Lincoln YMCA along with a free week pass to “Try the Y.”

I want to take a moment to thank everyone that came out to support LIBA’s Free Enterprise Celebration! We had an incredible turnout, and we appreciate Lincoln and our business community’s continued support. With the ‘FEC’ and Nebraska’s Legislative session behind us, we can get back to focusing on several changes that are coming to our organization.

As many of you know, when I took over LIBA in January, the first thing I did was send out surveys to current and past members to see what you liked about LIBA, what you didn’t like about LIBA and what you’d change about our organization. From our surveys, the number one reason our members joined LIBA and expect the most from our organization was you wanted representation in government. That’s why I am compelled to reiterate and emphasize the incredible progress we've made in representing our members' interests. During this legislative session, we acted on a record number of bills, a testament to our dedication to being the voice of small businesses in the political arena. We monitored a total of 76 bills, providing testimony on 49 bills that directly impact our members' businesses. Our efforts have not gone unnoticed, and I am sure they will be called to action again when the legislature is called for a special session.

The second largest reason people join LIBA is to add value to their business. We want to offer more value to members than ever before. Some businesses are brand new and need help just navigating through the “red tape” of running a business. Other members are focused on networking. Several need help marketing and connecting. Several members just want a watch-dog representing their best interests in government. We’re going to restructure membership levels to be tailored to our members’ interests. The Post Caters to Community

Located on 20th and N St., The Post brings a welcoming atmosphere to the Telegraph District. Sunlight floods through the inside of the southern-facing windows, welcoming newcomers to The Post. Bushy plants line the indoor patio and the familiar friendly feeling floods the senses. A dapper-looking man is stationed behind the bar top. Jesse Foster welcomes everyone with a wide smile and a booming voice.

Originally from Alabama, Jesse Foster grew up with southern hospitality as a part of his day-to-day life. Before leaving the state, Foster worked to receive a Ph.D. in Psychology with a focus on curriculum, instruction and instructional technology. Finally moving to Nebraska in 2001, Foster worked at the University of NebraskaLincoln before giving it all up.

“I got tired of listening to other people,” Foster said. “I wanted to do something fun.”

Foster then started his newest project: The Post. The Post brings a funky and light twist on a cocktail bar experience. Kim Adams Johnson is the customer concierge and event coordinator at The Post. Adams Johnson explains the unique aspects of what makes The Post special. “We use more of a mixologist frame of mind,” Adams Johnson said. “We make some of our own syrups; we’re putting new spins on some of the older fashion drinks.”

One of the cocktails on their menu is an Old Fashioned but with brown sugar-infused syrup and Uncle Nearest whiskey. Or, if that’s not to your taste, a common drink order is The Post’s Manmosa: beer with orange juice and a splash of grenadine, served with a shot of tequila on the side. The perfect addition to a Sunday brunch.

Every other Sunday, The Post hosts Sunday Southern Brunch, and breakfast food is brought in by Lila Mae’s Southern Kitchen & Lounge. Southern hospitality is an important part of The Post experience. “Communication is key, [Foster] tries to keep things running with communication,” Adams Johnson said. “People don’t listen anymore; they’re just simply waiting for their turn to speak. So that’s what we try to do, here, with our employees, and with people that we work with and with our customers.”

The Post welcomes everyone to come visit, often hosting special event nights. Mondays are “Proper Pajama & Popcorn Party” with a movie projected onto a big screen. The Post will ask for movie suggestions via social media.

Chess club is held every Thursday night and is open to the public. The Post hosts First Saturday, their take on First Friday, but on the first Saturday of the month. They provide spaces for local artists to display their work. They currently are hosting three local artists. It’s clear community is an important part of what makes up The Post. As National Travel and Tourism Week approaches on May 19 - 24, I wanted to dedicate this column to highlighting the incredible work of our Visit Lincoln team. Together, they serve as the driving force behind our success as both a travel destination and as a host to countless events and conferences. I am so proud of the work they do to support our hotels, restaurants, attractions and local retail establishments – just to name a few.

At the heart of Visit Lincoln’s mission is the commitment to creatively tell the story of our city, enticing locals, travelers, meeting planners and event attendees to explore everything our city has to offer. From historical landmarks and a vibrant art scene to exceptional restaurants and award-winning attractions, they ensure our unique narrative reaches audiences across the country. The success of their efforts is reflected in the number of diverse regional and national events they bring to our community. These include state education conferences like DECA, FFA and FCCLA, sporting events like the NSAA State High School Tournaments and Gravel World, and other niche events such as Sports Car Club of America and the Christian Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses District Convention, which alone brings over 5,000 people to Lincoln each year.
