Stay Savvy and Be Art Smart How to avoid online ticket scams.

The lowest-priced tickets *always* come from strazcenter.org. From Caught in the Act, the official blog of the Straz Center

Tickets to the Straz Center’s 2017-2018 season recently went on sale to the public. We feel it’s our duty to remind you to buy straight from our website if you want the lowest ticket prices. The other websites look legit, but they’re tricking you into paying sometimes hundreds of dollars more for a single ticket. It’s a simple scam, and one our audience members fall for every year. We try to combat this fraud, but we can’t succeed without you being aware of what’s happening. Strazcenter.org is the only official online ticket seller to performances in our halls. Anywhere else online will be a scalping scam. The names look real, and theirs are usually the first and foremost to pop up on an internet search for “Book of Mormon tickets”or “tickets Phantom of the Opera”or “tickets to Straight No Chaser.” They are names like tampatickets.com, carolmorsanihall. com, and even strazcentertickets.com. These

companies target unsuspecting buyers who click on whatever websites show up first after an internet search – usually the “sponsored ads” that look almost identical to an organic search result. Right now, these types of sites are deceiving Straz Center patrons about ticket prices, availability and seat locations. Unfortunately, many Straz Center patrons have been fooled by such scalping scams that run rampant on the internet. “The easiest way to see that our tickets are being scalped,” says LeeAnn Douglas, digital marketing director at the Straz Center, “is to search Google for a show’s name plus ‘tickets’ and ‘Tampa’and various ticket brokers’ Google ads will pop up. It’s true especially for the blockbuster shows. Click on any one of these ads and you can see that these brokers are selling tickets at three and four times the actual price,”she says. The ticket broker business of buying performance tickets and reselling them online at four and five times the value tallies millions of lost dollars for patrons and the A screenshot of the results that pop up when you search “rent tickets tampa.” Our official website (outlined in red) shows up after four ads from ticket brokers.

local economy each year. Because most of these brokers work remotely in other states and sell tickets from as many venues as they can – not just the Straz Center – the fraudulent resell of tickets results in dollars derailed into other states and patrons taking a hard blow to the pocketbook. Arts and entertainment patrons, who are unaware that these “ticket brokers”pose as allies of the venue yet, in reality, are poaching and price-gouging tickets, unwittingly contribute to keeping the scalping rings in business. “I had a friend text me that she wanted to see Il Divo but the tickets were too expensive,”LeeAnn says. “When I asked her to send me the link, I could see right away that she wasn’t on our site. I redirected her to strazcenter.org, and she was very happy because she was able to get orchestra seats for a quarter of the price the ticket broker was asking. In the end, she got great seats with a VIP package from our website for the same price that she would have paid a ticket broker for seats in the gallery.” With the sheer number of brokers nationwide running these companies, it is impossible for the Straz Center to stop them from buying tickets. But it is possible – and simple and easy – for patrons to stop supporting these businesses. “We need to educate the buying public on how to avoid buying from a broker,” says LeeAnn. “Instead of automatically clicking the top search result, which is always a paid advertisement, they need to make sure they take a moment to look at the search results and find the Straz Center’s official site. Or better yet, bookmark one of the Straz Center’s websites [www.strazcenter.org or https://shop. strazcenter.org], and then any time they want to buy a ticket for one of our events, there is no need to perform a search at all.” So, if you purchase tickets online, make sure you, your family and friends use strazcenter.org. Otherwise, you will be overpaying to scalpers without even knowing it.

This is how the Straz Center’s official website, strazcenter.org, appears on a mobile device.

The Straz Center and its arts and entertainment allies continue efforts to fight on behalf of our patrons. A $300 ticket to a Broadway show from a broker could pay for dinner, an overnight hotel stay and a show at the Straz Center price – all money nourishing our local businesses and economy. The Straz Center’s mission is to inspire audiences and artists to dream and discover, to create and celebrate, and part of our commitment is to make sure audiences know the truth about consumer issues in the arts. Please help us spread the word about buying tickets directly from our website as we prepare for another spectacular season of performing arts. This way, we can all stay savvy and be art smart.

strazcenter.org is the ONLY official online ticket seller to Straz Center performances.

Celluloid Dreams

An in-depth convo with Straz Center Senior Director of Marketing, Summer Bohnenkamp, who directs her fifth production with Jobsite Theater – this season’s opener, The Flick.

This season opens with Annie Baker’s 2014 Pulitzer Prize-winner, The Flick, a play that captures quintessential Jobsite at its best: a simple set, a small cast of exquisitely drawn workaday characters, and a tiny little premise that symbolizes the entire degradation of moral authenticity that has become our modern life. It’s a play about people cleaning an old movie house. “The story is about three people who are lost,” says The Flick’s director, Summer Bohnenkamp. “They work in the last indie movie house in Massachusetts that plays real film, not digital. It has a projector you have to load and everything. All the action takes place either before or after a film, and there they are in the theater talking, cleaning the theater, figuring out who they are. In a way, it reminds me of [the movie] Empire Records. It’s the same kind of idea.”

Bohnenkamp herself started similarly, selling tickets in the ticket office at The Straz, then working her way to senior management in marketing. By day, she handles the massive needs of overseeing the marketing of hundreds of performances – everything from networking and buying media to writing institutional marketing plans and providing voiceovers for television ads. Her abiding love of theater keeps her with one foot in the show, one foot in the business as she balances her life between the corporate pressures of arts marketing and the creative outlet of bringing excellent scripts to life as an actor and a director.

I don’t cook well; I’m not crafty. But, theater is something I can make that is good. It’s lasting.

Jobsite Theater, almost 19 years ears into its illustrious reputation as one ne of the strongest regional theater companies ompanies in Florida and beginning their 13th as resident theater company of the Strazz Center Center, earned their reputation by putting up challenging, edgy, sometimes cerebral, often hysterical, intermittently campy theater works designed to be politically and socially relevant. The company keeps the definitions of “political” and “social” loose on purpose: Jobsite prides itself on its blue-collar work ethic while keeping a watchful eye on the systems of power and relationships, always ready to mount the kind of winning assessment of both that good theater dramatizes.

“It’s cool to make something,” she says. “When I direct or act, I get to make something, and I don’t really ‘make’

other tthings. I don’t cook well; I’m not crafty. theater is something I can make that is But, the good. It’s lasting. Hopefully, the audience actors get something out of it, too. and act are elements of trust and family that There a created through the process of making get cre a play that are very rewarding. Theater is a living, breathing thing that is never the same twice. It’s better than any therapy or exercise I can think of.” Bohnenkamp’s other directorial achievements with Jobsite most recently includes their award-winning production of Time Stands Still. Prior to that, she co-directed Annapurna and served as an associate director for reasons to be pretty and All New People. With The Flick, Bohnenkamp returns to her favorite style of script, a stripped-down, dialogue-driven, naturalistic look at people and motivations in situations we can all recognize.. “I like plays that are real people talking. We’ve heard these people, we’ve e eavesdropped on people just like e the characters in this play. We know them. All the shows I’ve done have been en about regular, recognizable people, and d it’s interesting to delve into that level el of realness when, in actuality, you’re creating e crea ating something totally false. The three e characters cha aracter es in The Flick have some very interesting resttin i g quirks,” she says. “The dialogue rev reveals veals alll the major surprises. These people e who seem m

obvious have secrets and important stories. It’s very funny.” From auditions, Bohnenkamp pulled three actors who can capture the subtle depth of the characters and deliver the complexity of the subtext in Baker’s script. “Brian Shea plays ‘Sam,’ the manager, and he killed it right off the page. He does neuroses so well, which is required for Sam. ‘Rose,’ the projectionist, is played by Georgia Mallory Guy, who can do anything. She came into the audition and gave off exactly what I was envisioning for Rose. We have Thomas Morgan playing ‘Avery,’ the young one of the bunch and the central character. Thomas knows who Avery is, and he had a well-defined character even in the auditions. It’s a good room,” she says, referring to a well-known theater term for having a cast that is positive and hard-working. “This is going to be a fantastic show.”

The Flick runs in the Shimberg Playhouse from now until Sept. 24. Get your tickets at strazcenter.org.

From the President/CEO and Chairman of the Board Dear Friends,

It’s finally September, and you know what season it is – a season of love. That’s right, the sleeper hit of the 20th century turns 20 years JUDITH LISI old this year, and the RENT President/CEO 20th Anniversary Tour lands in Morsani Hall Sep. 19-24. Jonathan Larson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning musical about young New Yorkers laying their lives on the line for love, dreams, hope and each other speaks as loudly and defiantly GARY SASSO now as it did in 1996. Poised Chairman to ensnare a new generation of young fans, RENT still stands as a rock musical about the power to thrive in a world determined to knock you down. Another, quieter yet equally compelling Pulitzer winner is also playing this month courtesy of our resident award-winning theater company, Jobsite Theater. Annie Baker’s hilarious 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, The Flick, reels out its trio of movie house workers in a naturalistic drama that captures the conundrum of authenticity in a fast-changing, digital world. Funny, surprising and characteristic of Baker’s notable way with dialogue, The Flick is now playing at the Shimberg Playhouse until Sept. 24. To read an interview with Summer Bohnenkamp, director of The Flick, turn to pages 6-7. Finally, mark your calendars for the Straz Center’s Totally ’80s Open House Party on Sunday, Oct. 8, where we will be throwing open our doors to celebrate opening 30 years ago in 1987. We’ll have live bands cranking ’80s hits as well as plenty of family-friendly activities, food and drink specials and more. Please come by with your family and friends and help us celebrate this tremendous occasion. We look forward to seeing you at these shows and at Open House.

A Note on the Play

The Flick takes place in 2012 inside a run-down movie theater in central Massachusetts. Learn more about this play, why we chose it, and much more at JobsiteTheater.org.

Join our Annual Campaign!

Do you believe in our work? Would you like to see us continue to grow – not just in terms of our work on stage but in the community – while continuing to work toward a living wage for our artists? It’s easier than you might think! Please join our 2017 Annual Campaign; we have a $60,000 goal for the year, and we still need to raise another $18,000. However, thanks to a generous grant from the Gobioff Foundation, we only need to raise $9,000 of that from the general public – they will match the rest, dollar-for-dollar! This campaign is CRITICAL to the future of our company. Visit us at JobsiteTheater.org to learn more about our new membership levels. You can really make a difference! 11

A Note About the Plot

BB

enny is Mark and Roger’s former roommate. With the help of his wealthy father-in-law, Benny has bought the building in which Mark and Roger live, and the lot next door that is inhabited by a group of homeless people. Benny wants to build a high-tech cyber-arts studio on the property. Toward this end, he plans to clear the homeless from the lot and evict all the tenants from the building, including Mark and Roger.

Mark’s former lover, Maureen, schedules a performance protest of Benny’s scheme for midnight on Christmas Eve. Benny offers a deal to Mark and Roger: If they convince Maureen to stop her protest, they can stay in the building rent-free. At the end of Act I, Maureen stages her performance. A riot erupts in the lot, which Mark videotapes. Then Benny padlocks the building, locking out all the tenants. Act II begins on New Year’s Eve as Mark, Roger and friends attempt to break back into the building. The rest of the act follows the events of the year.

The Straz Center Endowment Fund

The Straz Center’s Endowment was established during the construction phase of the Center in the 1980s. The second phase of endowment growth occurred between 1999 and 2004, when The Campaign for The Center, a comprehensive effort combining endowment and building needs, increased the endowment to $30 million. Increased investment income realized from a permanent and growing endowment is critical to the success and future of the Straz Center. We continue to build the endowment to ensure our financial stability and secure the Center’s programming for the 21st century and beyond. For more information on how you can participate, please call the development department at 813.222.1035.

Volunteer Recognition

The Straz Center would like to recognize and thank all the volunteers who provide support through their service both in front and in back of house. Without the countless hours put in by our ushers, lounge hosts, retail volunteers, office volunteers and Patel Conservatory volunteers, we could not provide the world class service our patrons have come to expect. As we celebrate our 2016-17 season, the Straz Center would like to extend an extra special thank you to those volunteers who have been with us since the first season in 1987-88. AN ANNUAL DONOR

Through her work using improv games, theater instructor Sarah Berland helps special-needs adults learn to adapt to change so they can hold a job. With a dependable job, they get a shot at an independent life. Because of annual donors, Sarah gets to realize her dream: to be the best teacher for all her students. She can, because you did. Annual donations supply teachers the resources they need, whether they’re in our classrooms or in our community, to provide unparalleled instruction and change lives.
