The Straz Center education program readies local high school musical theater talents for the big time with the Broadway Star of the Future program. Winners get a chance to wow Broadway producers and directors in NYC for their shot at the title – and potentially launch their careers with a Jimmy® Award.

W

e all know you get to Carnegie Hall with practice, practice, practice, but the joke omits the part about breaking into the business, which may be the most confounding part of wanting to be a working performer. Between a hefty mythologizing about the la-la land of show business and the often unknown paths leading to the Great White Way if you’re distanced from the Big Apple, musical theater students often feel overwhelmed by the size of their dream. A long-time champion of the Florida State Thespians, a chapter of Education Theatre Association which supports excellence in theater education, The Straz established the Broadway Star of the Future award, a prize to two performers during the Thespians’ week-long annual festival at The Straz. These two winners, one female and one male, get

a chaperoned, all-expense-paid trip to New York City to participate in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards presented by the Broadway League Foundation and created by legendary Broadway producer and theater owner James M. Nederlander. The Jimmys®, as they are affectionately known, is no mere red-carpet event. Oh, no. It’s a national competition, Broadway-style, which introduces aspiring musical theater performers to the demanding, week-in-thelife experience of a working actor. They have nine days to learn songs, choreography, medleys and cues for a two-hour, ticketed, live competition show at the Minksoff Theatre. They are ranked in secret by judges during rehearsal week solo performances, then the highest-ranking students are judged again during the full-cast medley sections of the Minskoff show. Scores are tallied, and four

finalists are announced for a nail-biting final competition round, performing their solos once again to a packed Broadway house. One male and one female win a Jimmy, which includes a $10,000 check and guaranteed visibility with some of Broadway’s most respected vocal coaches, choreographers, directors and producers. This year’s contenders will also be seen by Ben Platt, who currently stars in Dear Evan Hansen, as he hosts the 2017 Jimmy® Awards in New York. Realizing that the thespian pool did not reflect the talent in smaller or underserved schools, leadership at the Patel Conservatory decided to change things up a bit, separating the Broadway Star of the Future program from the Thespian Festival, which will still happen every spring at The Straz. The exciting development this year involves our very own workshop-and-awards-show, a live, ticketed performance of the Broadway Star of the Future Awards Showcase in Ferguson Hall.

““We’re “W We expecting this show to be a glitz and d glamour affair. We We have ha ave e exceptional talent ent nt in n this area, and they heyy deserve a taste of the he e professional life that The hat T he he Straz can give them.” Throughout the year, two to three reviewers from a stable of credentialed volunteers travel to local high schools in a four-county radius that applied to have their musicals and performers judged for several award categories. These reviewers nominate

Outstanding Musical as well as Outstanding Actress and Actor, and these area schools and individuals collaborate in a one-day workshop to create the awards show for Broadway Star of the Future. Then it’s places! Curtain! . . . and by the end of the show on June 4, we will know which two high school musical theater performers will be heading to New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts for rehearsals and their shot at the 2017 Jimmy Award in the Minskoff Theatre. “Hosting this Broadway Star of the Future program widens the net of who we can celebrate,” says Vice President of Education Suzanne Livesay. “Any school with grades 9-12 can apply for review, which is so exciting for us. We get to see the bigger picture of who is out there and give them an opportunity to get to New York if that’s where they want to be.” Naturally, there are no guarantees, just opportunities – but the Straz Center’s 2012 Broadway Star of the Future, Joshua Grosso, won The Jimmy that year and was featured in the PBS documentary about the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, B Broadway or Bust. ““We’re expecting this show tto be a glitz and glamour affair,” Livesay says. “We have exceptional talent in this area, and they deserve a taste of the professional life that The Straz can give them from a live competition showcase in a fantastic theater. The winners will be prepared to go to New York, and we will have an incredible annual event to look forward to as a thriving, high school musical environment that makes real, professional inroads for our children.” Bravo, Straz Education!

The Broadway Star of the Future Awards Showcase happens Jun. 4 in Ferguson Hall. Tickets are on sale now. For more information, visit strazcenter.org/ Arts-Education/Broadway-Star-of-the-Future or email broadwaystarofthefuture@strazcenter.org.

The Million Little Stories That Make Up Who We Are Every dollar given to The Straz touches another life. At The Straz, we’re more than just a show. We are Patel Conservatory music teachers driving to Ruskin to work with migrant children as part of an outreach program. We are dance teachers who refuse to miss a single class at Metropolitan Ministries because we know how important it is to show up for kids who already know too much about broken promises. We are professional teaching artists who forge the next generation of American musical theater performers, jazz musicians and classical ballerinas. We are the gathering place for friends to see a Broadway musical together or catch the latest funk band from Brooklyn. We are the memory of an unforgettable wedding ceremony on Morsani stage or by the Hillsborough River. We are girls’ night out. We are the anniversary treat, the birthday present, the Sunday afternoon adventure for families from every neighborhood around Tampa Bay. We are the place where hope renews, again and again, with every curtain rising, every lift of a maestro’s baton. In every quiet, dark moment when the lights go down, we are the safe space for dreaming and doing. Day after day, we are a million little stories like these, of people whose lives change because of something they experience through The Straz. This spring, we will share some of these stories so you can see what annual gifts to The Straz do for other people. Ticket sales don’t cover these priceless experiences. We’re able to offer them because someone like you sees the bigger story about what The Straz does for our community. We invite you to belong at The Straz by becoming an annual donor. Every dollar given directly improves someone’s life, whether you give $10 a month or $10,000 a year. You will make a difference. To learn more about how we’re using annual gifts, visit us at strazcenter.org/whysupport. Do you have a story about how The Straz changed you? We’d love to hear it. Email us at belong@strazcenter.org.

From the President/CEO and Chairman of the Board Spring’s awakening, friends, and we have performances popping out all over in April and May – including the arrival of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The King and I in Morsani Hall May 2-7. We’ve got non-stop fun lined up starting with Not Today Satan, the JUDITH LISI President/CEO comedy show of Bianca Del Rio, the season six winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race, in Ferguson Hall on April 7. One Woman Sex and the City saunters into the Jaeb Theater April 11-13, a tribute to all six seasons of the delightfully debauched hit television show. A few weeks later, Sex Tips for GARY SASSO Straight Women from a Gay Man Chairman lands in the Jaeb Theater on April 27-30, back by popular demand from its run last season. And, as if the laughs couldn’t get any better, we welcome superstar Chris Rock to Morsani Hall April 14 and 15 for his Total Blackout tour. Another superstar stops by Morsani Hall on April 21 when omniscient foodie Alton Brown appears for his Eat Your Science tour, right after an unpredictable evening with psychic phenom Teresa Caputo, The Long Island Medium, on April 18. On April 22, ROCKTOPIA LIVE: A Classic (R)evolution, merges classic rock with classical music in a revolutionary type of musical concert. It should be (you guessed it) an instant classic. A star of a different sort, Puccini’s Tosca, caps off the grand opera season in Morsani Hall on April 7 and 9. This epic tale is considered one of the great masterpieces of all time for good reason, so don’t miss it. Club Jaeb songster Joshua James performs May 15 and Aaron Tveit takes the Ferguson stage April 30 as part of the Straz’s unique, unforgettable cabaret series. We are also pleased to announce the M.E. Tour with Marsha Ambrosius (of Floetry) and Eric Bénet in Ferguson Hall on April 20. For the little ones, we’re offering the annual Wee Folk favorite, Sandi Sylver Puppet Show, in the Rehearsal Hall on April 22. Remember that Jobsite Theater has A Skull in Connemara, the blasphemously funny whodunit from Irish playwright Martin McDonagh, in the Shimberg Playhouse until April 9. Thank you so much for being with us. Enjoy the show!

SATURDAY, APRIL 22, 8:00PM MORSANI HALL Straz Center for the Performing Arts presents

ROCKTOPIA LIVE: A Classic (R)evolution CREATION/BIRTH “Also Sprach Zarathustra” (Strauss) “Baba O’Riley” (The Who) “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik” (Mozart) “Come Sail Away” (Styx) Though the opening to Strauss’ Tone Poem, “Also Sprach Zarathustra,” was written to reflect a sunrise, this incredible excerpt has come to mean much more. Written in 1896, it was made famous as the opening to the film 2001: A Space Odyssey and has now come to signify the dawn of time or the beginning of the human presence on Earth. Pete Townshend originally wrote “Baba O’Riley” for his Lifehouse project, a rock opera that was to be the follow-up to The Who’s 1969 opera, Tommy. “Baba O’Riley” was going to be used as a song sung by Ray, the Scottish farmer at the beginning of the album as he gathers his wife Sally and his two children to begin their exodus to London. It later became an anthem of teenage excess during Woodstock. We use it as classic rock staple to catapult us into the frenetic experience that is life. “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik” is a 1787 composition for a chamber ensemble by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The German title means “a little serenade,” though it is often rendered more literally but less accurately as “a little night music.” “The Mozart” comes as an almost humorous interruption to the frenzy, which precedes it. The “powdered wig” classical character of the Mozart leads directly into the famous piano solo at the beginning of “Come Sail Away” which is a parody of classical piano styles. The song, written by Dennis De Young of Styx, is thought to contain an allusion to the Bible verse of Ezekiel chapter 1:1-28 where a large wheel/cloud appears to Ezekiel and gives him instructions from God: “A gathering of angels appeared above my head. They sang to me this song of hope, and this is what they said...” (And later in the song) “... I thought that they were angels, but to my surprise, they climbed aboard their starship and headed for the skies.” Some people believe the figure Ezekiel saw was not a messenger sent from God but an alien spacecraft or a time machine from the future. We use it as an invitation to come on a journey of sorts. In this 12-minute segment, the very essence of Rocktopia is revealed. ADOLESCENCE “Lasicia Ch’io Pianga” (Handel) “Your Song” (Elton John) “Let me weep … May sorrow break these chains.” This unspeakably beautiful aria, “Lasicia Ch’io Pianga,” was written in 1705 and then re-used by Handel many times over. The lyrics of “Your Song” express the romantic thoughts of an innocent. Lyricist Bernie Taupin offers a straightforward, heart-on-your-sleeve, love-song lyric at the beginning. At times, the selfdeprecating narrator stumbles to get out his feelings. Rocktopia seamlessly combines the two songs and genres, making a beautiful duet about young love. TICKETS: 813.229.STAR (7827) • STRAZCENTER.ORG

15

“Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor” (Rachmaninoff) “Alone” (Heart) Completing the young love theme, we introduce a third character during Rachmaninoff’s heart-wrenching piano concerto, who then sings of angst and torment through the music of Heart’s “Alone.” EXPERIMENTATION “The Rite of Spring” (Stravinsky) “Purple Haze” (Jimi Hendrix) The 1913 premiere of Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring” stands alone as the most scandalous premiere in the history of classical music. A riot broke out at the first performance! The audience threw things at the stage, fights broke out and, finally, police were called to calm the situation. The music utterly revolutionized composition. The harmonies were far more dissonant, the rhythms way more complex and the subject material (an ancient Russian pagan ritual where a virgin is forced to dance herself to death) far more violent and sexual than anything which had proceeded it. This was truly a REVOLUTION! It is not entirely dissimilar to the musical revolution started by Jimi Hendrix. More violent, more sexual, more dissonant – it’s the same! In fact, there are many who consider “The Rite of Spring” to be the first rock piece ever written! Beyond the historical similarities, there are actually harmonic parallels between “The Rite of Spring” and “Purple Haze” making their combination a bit more organic. DREAMS “Symphonie Fantastique” (Berlioz) “Dream On” (Aerosmith) In looking to pair a dynamic and dramatic segment of classical music with Aerosmith’s “Dream On,” Maestro Fleischer was immediately drawn to the opening phrase of the Berlioz “Symphonie Fantastique,” a work he has conducted many times. Hector Berlioz struggled enormously before his quirky and individual brand of composition caught on during the mid19th century. Steve Tyler said that “Dream On” is about striving, dreaming, “the hunger to be somebody.” There is a yearning, yet hazy and dramatic angst in the introductions to both works. “Symphonie Fantastique” is the autobiographical story of a half-crazed “artist” who, in desperation, takes an overdose of opium and has a fantastical dream. The heart and soul of both works seemed to be as one – the artists’ struggle to reach, strive and dream. OPRESSION/REBELLION “Another Brick in the Wall” Part 2 (Pink Floyd) “Uprising” (Muse) “Another Brick in the Wall” is the title of three songs set to variations of the same basic theme, on Pink Floyd’s 1979 rock opera, The Wall, subtitled Part 1 (working title “Reminiscing”), Part 2 (working title “Education”) and Part 3 (working title “Drugs”). Part 2 is a protest song against rigid schooling in general and boarding schools in the U.K. in particular. After being insulted by the teacher, Pink, the rock opera’s protagonist, dreams that the kids in his school begin to protest against their abusive teachers. It talks about how he had a personal wall around him from the rest of the world, the teachers were just another brick in the wall. For a more modern day approach on the subject and with a wider span on the topic of oppression/rebellion, we fused “Uprising,” a song by English alternative rock band Muse, featured on their fifth studio album The Resistance in 2009.

FINALE (part 1) THE QUEST “Kashmir” (Led Zeppelin) “Nessun Dorma” (Puccini) In Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir,” the vocal character in the song is a traveler searching time and space. In this singular arrangement, we find not only a quest of sorts, but also an epic fusion between two giants of their genres and historical time period in music. “Nessun Dorma” is notably one of the most beautiful arias ever written. The song itself is from the master Puccini’s opera Turandot and comes at a rather bizarre moment in the plot when the lead tenor Kalaf has to answer three questions in a special quiz devised by the Princess. If he answers correctly, he becomes the Princess’ husband, if he fails, he will be executed. “No one sleeps tonight…in the morning, I will win!” EQUALITY “Gate of Kiev” from “Pictures at an Exhibition” (Mussorgsky) “Where the Streets Have No Name” (U2) U2’s “Where the Streets Have No Name” reflects the idea that one can identify the race, gender, religion and socio-economic status of a person by hearing their street address. It speaks to a world where everybody is equal and there is no longer a class system. Rocktopia chose to use “Gate of Kiev” from Mussorgsky’s piano work, “Pictures at an Exhibition” because of the connection between streets and gates (gates provide open access to streets – in a sense, opening the door to a new kind of world) and because the nature of this music is completely life-affirming. We added a chorus to this music making it a very big, grand, operatic sound. Maestro Fleischer’s lyrics are “Gloria Humana” and “Gloria Terra” which translate to: “Glory to Humanity” and “Glory to the Earth.” At the climactic moment of the introduction, there is a short quote from Bach’s Toccata & Fugue in D minor. This opening piece of ACT 2 truly embodies the heart and soul of Rocktopia. AMORE “Romeo & Juliet Overture” (Tchaikovsky) “Because the Night” (Patti Smith Group) “Because the Night” represents raw sexual attraction. Rocktopia’s arrangement of this aspect of love/lust begins by quoting Tchaikovsky’s “Romeo & Juliet Overture.” Tchaikovsky nails the white-hot passion and conflict between the two lovers. Combining these two felt, to us, such a natural fit. “Quando Me’n Vo” (Puccini) “Something” (The Beatles) “Caruso” (Andrea Boccelli) “I Want to Know What Love Is” (Foreigner) This unique Rocktopia fusion of Italian opera and pop mixed with classic rock takes the audience through the human journey of love. Beginning somewhat flirtatiously and unsure, the arc leads to a much deeper and long lasting romantic relationship. The musical journey takes a similar path by starting small and simple, then climaxing to a rousing full orchestra and gospel choir.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILTY “Fanfare for the Common Man” (Copland) “On the Turning Away” (Pink Floyd) Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man” was written in 1942, during World War II as a part of the Cincinnati Symphony’s effort to keep support for the war effort as high as possible. Eighteen fanfares were commissioned by the Cincinnati symphony, but Copland’s masterful “Fanfare for the Common Man” is the only one which is still performed. This incredibly powerful work speaks to all that is noble and just in the human spirit. It is the very sound of moral determination: doing what’s right, doing what’s just. Pink Floyd’s “On the Turning Away” stands as another example of music’s ability to stir the most noble of feelings in a person. Maestro Fleischer’s unique arrangement sort of fell into place, weaving one into the other as though the two were born as one. LOSS “Adagio for Strings” (Barber) “Who Wants to Live Forever” / “We Are The Champions” Queen “Adagio for Strings” is a work by Samuel Barber, arranged in 1936 for string orchestra from the second movement of his String Quartet, Op. 11. This intense work for strings has been used in many film scores; most notably Platoon to express the deepest and most tragic human emotions. Queen’s “Who wants to Live Forever” and “We are the Champions,” written by Freddie Mercury (1946 – 1991), provide the perfect backdrop for our tribute to those who are gone and often much too soon. FINALE (part 2): THE HUMAN CONDITION “Ode to Joy” Symphony No. 9 (Beethoven) “Don’t Stop Believin’” (Journey) “Ode to Joy” (German: “Ode an die Freude,” first line: “Freude, schöner Götterfunken”) is an ode written in 1785 by the German poet, playwright and historian Friedrich Schiller, enthusiastically celebrating the brotherhood and unity of all mankind. The ode is best known for its musical setting by Ludwig van Beethoven in the final movement of his Ninth Symphony (completed in 1824). It remains today as one of the most recognizable classical themes of all time, evoking genuine human emotion every time it is performed. The Beethoven version was adopted as the Anthem of Europe by the Council of Europe in 1972 and has been used in settings ranging from religious to athletic to cinematic. “Don’t Stop Believin’,” by the American rock band Journey, has been described as a perfect rock song and an anthem, featuring “one of the best opening keyboard riffs in rock” (Jonathan Cain). As of November 2011, it is the top-selling catalog track in iTunes history, having a true re-birth through its many recent appearances on film, sports presentations, and television exposing the anthem to new audiences both young and old. Rocktopia uses this fusion to celebrate life, music and the brotherhood of mankind. The taking of photographs and/or use of other recording equipment is strictly prohibited. MONDAY, APRIL 24, 7:30PM JAEB THEATER Straz Center for the Performing Arts presents

Joshua James as part of Club Jaeb

Raised in hard-bitten Nebraska, Joshua James’ work reflects a distinctly American ache, a yearning for a big sky and an open road. Beckoned westward out of his heartland home by the voices of Jim Morrison and Isaac Brock, he made it as far as the mountains of Utah, where like the settlers before him, he was stopped in his tracks by the arresting beauty. Here, where the mountains pierce the heavens, some believe a conduit is open between man and the divine. Strangely familiar, yet refreshingly innovative, James’ songs are devastating in their honesty, working with themes that are intermittently elating, melancholic, and transcendent. He doesn’t so much perform these songs, as he does let them possess him, allowing his voice to be throttled from a husky whisper to a full-bodied roar. His first two albums, 2007’s The Sun Is Always Brighter and 2009’s Build Me This, topped the year-end Best of iTunes lists, while earning ecstatic praise from press. After the commercial release of his first album in 2007, James spent five years touring across the United States and to far-flung places such as Romania and Japan. In early 2011, he headed back to Utah, taking a break from the road. During this extended stay at home, James took to vegetable gardening, raising goats and chickens, and developed a heightened connection to the living things around him. The concept of becoming selfsufficient and living off the land became increasingly appealing. Ultimately, his home and burgeoning farm were deemed “Willamette Mountain,” a namesake that came to James in a dream. Both figuratively and literally, Willamette Mountain serves as a daily reminder of the simple beauties that can so easily be overlooked. It was here that he bore the songs compiling his album, From The Top Of Willamette Mountain. Of his new album, released in April 2017, James says, “As a mother sends her child out into the world, so do we with My Spirit Sister. Evan, Timmy, Isaac and myself worked on making a record that settles in the center, somewhere between hope and heartbreak. The times in which these songs were made was one of personal upheaval and slight confusion. I was tying strings from which I could swing back and forth between emotions. Looking back now, I have only the recordings to remind me. And so, here she lies.” Music: www.joshuajames.tv FB: facebook.com/joshuajamesband// The taking of photographs and/or use of other recording equipment is strictly prohibited. The Straz Center Endowment Fund

The Straz Center’s Endowment was established during the construction phase of the Center in the 1980s. The second phase of endowment growth occurred between 1999 and 2004, when The Campaign for The Center, a comprehensive effort combining endowment and building needs, increased the endowment to $30 million. Increased investment income realized from a permanent and growing endowment is critical to the success and future of the Straz Center. We continue to build the endowment to ensure our financial stability and secure the Center’s programming for the 21st century and beyond. For more information on how you can participate, please call the development department at 813.222.1035.

Volunteer Recognition

The Straz Center would like to recognize and thank all the volunteers who provide support through their service both in front and in back of house. Without the countless hours put in by our ushers, lounge hosts, retail volunteers, office volunteers and Patel Conservatory volunteers, we could not provide the world class service our patrons have come to expect. As we celebrate our 2016-17 season, the Straz Center would like to extend an extra special thank you to those volunteers who have been with us since the first season in 1987-88. BECOME AN ANNUAL DONOR And help her achieve the story of her dreams . . .

She knew what she wanted. She saw it. But how to get there? Gifts from our annual donors help fund our scholarship program – those gifts and hundreds of hours of practice in our classrooms got her on the stage today. She is one of thousands of young people who have big dreams and the determination to make them happen. Help write their stories. Make your gift at strazcenter.org or call 813.222.1036.
