DEAR STRAZ CENTER DONORS AND FRIENDS, This report to the community earmarks the tremendous cultural impact you made possible by your support of the Straz Center for the Performing Arts. As you know, we are much, much MORE THAN JUST A SHOW — and this past season, you made sure everyone else knew it too: • MORE lives changed for the better because of the hundreds of performing arts classes, workshops, outreach efforts and master classes you funded.
• Your support allowed us to book MORE eclectic, invigorating and favorite artists, Broadway shows, comedians, opera, dance companies, musicians, theater works and international speakers for our stages.
• Your choice to invest MORE in the cultural life of our community generated close to 100 million dollars in economic impact. • MORE accessibility, MORE staff and volunteer training, MORE community projects, MORE fun, MORE uplifting events, MORE inclusion and diversity — MORE of the Straz experience for everyone happened because of you.
This past 2015-2016 season, we engaged in MORE planning, MORE visioning, MORE focusing on inclusive community needs — all work you made possible. Our donors, patrons and board offered keen insight into our role in the area-wide shared dream of thrusting the Tampa Bay region into the international spotlight. We covered far too much ground this season to detail every aspect of your impact as a Straz donor and our impact as an organization in this small annual report, but we did our best to catalogue the highlights of new efforts. I offer my deepest gratitude for your ongoing enthusiasm for our mission and your contributions, noted on these pages, to a positive, ever-inspiring community creative force that is the Straz Center. A commitment to diversity and inclusion became a more visible, growing aspect of The Straz’s culture and identity in 2015-2016. We aspired to better serve and represent our community with more initiatives, committees and training sessions. “ Diversity and inclusion is who you are as an organization that broadens who you are in the community. If you don’t look like the community you serve, you’re not serving your community.” – Linda Landman Gonzalez, vice president of philanthropy and multicultural insights with the Orlando Magic and guest speaker to the Straz Center Diversity and Inclusion Committee.
Straz staff volunteered to launch the Diversity and Inclusion Committee and spearheaded the Straz Access initiative and personal development training. Efforts resulted in creating a pilot sensory-friendly performance at the Patel Conservatory, more prominent accessibility signage, regularly occurring ASL-interpreted Broadway nights, expanded programming of international and local artists, enhanced awareness of the many diverse cultures living in and around Tampa – and much more. Support for The Straz provided practical, superlative training in our mission to make Tampa’s performing arts center a home for all.

The Patel Conservatory, the only accredited performing arts school in Florida, continued to flourish with higher enrollment, greater attendance at our professionally produced productions and stronger diversity among students from pre-K to golden age.

Students experienced more scholarships, more workshops, more master classes and more artist-teachers and guest artists than ever before. The Patel Conservatory trained more than 16,000 people in dance, music and theater in the 2015-2016 season.

Building on last season’s success with the Fin Harp and Why Sit When You Can Play?, the xylophone bench, the Straz Center launched a new series of community art projects, engaging people in the creative process and highlighting the extraordinary talents of local and international visual artists. They included portrait photographer Daniel Chauche’s Who We Are: Faces of Tampa Bay, the graffiti-art-installation The Cube, We Built This City and the extraordinary rotating fine art exhibit in Morsani Hall courtesy of Dr. Jay and Ann McKeel Ross. International black-and-white photographer Daniel Chauche, famous for his work with indigenous populations in Guatemala, captured portraits of hundreds of members of the Tampa Bay area during his 2016 residency, curating a stunning photography exhibit in Morsani Hall and along the Riverwalk. 7

Our abundant season offered nearly 1,000 performances, presenting an unparalleled scope of artistry in Florida. The wide range of performers and shows spoke to our richly diverse audience tastes, from pure entertainment to Jobsite Theater’s edgy theater season to erudite presentations from some of today’s greatest minds.
Straz Center donors fuel intellectual and artistic growth as well as the internal growth of the organization itself, making it possible for The Straz to present an array of programming without peer in Florida.
