The Thief and His Thief-Taker General

O

The unbelievable true crime story behind the swinging jazz standard “Mack the Knife.”

nce upon a time, there was a five-foot-four London folk hero who inspired John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera, which inspired Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s The Threepenny Opera, which contained the song “Mack the Knife,” which became a snappy lounge tune for jazz bopper Bobby Darin. This is the true tale of Jack Sheppard, born into poverty in 1702 in Spitalfields, England. Sent to work at six years old after his father died, Sheppard lived with a new master, Jonathan Kneebone, who eventually apprenticed Jack to a carpenter when Jack became a teenager, and life was good. For a time. As fate would have it, Sheppard fell in with a charismatic, strapping yet morally suspect woman, Elizabeth Lyon, who was known about the neighborhood as Edgworth Bess for her propensity to liberate objects from their owners, including money for carnal knowledge that she possessed. She introduced Sheppard, a young man of 21, to the vices of the London underbelly at the Black Lion, a local tavern. Quickly, Sheppard discovered he liked the Black Lion and Elizabeth more than carpentry, and in 1724, he made a life-changing (and, as you will discover, dear reader, a life-ending) decision to forego his upstanding path as a carpenter for a life as a petty thief and an escapologist of remarkable talent. Elizabeth introduced Jack to Joseph “Blueskin” Blake, a well-known thief. With his new associates, Jack began pilfering, earning a reputation as one of the city’s notable housebreakers. After stealing spoons from Charing Cross, Jack landed in prison in February 1724. Tying strips of his bedsheets together, Jack escaped after breaking a hole in the roof and lowering himself to freedom. This stunt garnered public attention and admiration after people learned that Sheppard got away scot-free by standing amongst them, pointing at a rooftop and shouting “Look! There he is!” A few months passed, yet Jack was caught pickpocketing in May 1724 and was thrown into a more substantial prison. Elizabeth visited him, was arrested herself and locked in the cell with Jack. As man-and-wife, they were moved to a new prison. Friends sneaked in a few small tools, allowing Jack to saw through the manacles. With a 25-foot drop to the ground, Jack needed more than his bedsheets, so Elizabeth gave her petticoat to the cause. Unfortunately, the 25-foot drop was into another prison yard. Jack drove spikes into the wall, the two climbed over and fled into the city. 4

If Jack’s exploits sound like make-believe, wait until you read about the next escapes. A bigger problem for Jack arrived in the form of the selfappointed “Thief-Taker General,” Jonathan Wild. Wild was an utterly contemptible criminal who’d fashioned himself as a champion of the people by configuring an elaborate robbery scheme whereby he magically “found” people’s stolen property and scooped up all of the reward money. He could find all of their goods because his gang of thieves stole them in the first place. Wild ran the London thieves’ underground from the police station, and he pretty much ran the police department. He had the press wrapped around his finger. No one could rat him out or he’d cry “thief” and have the person hanged without trial. It was a good gig for Wild until he decided that nabbing Jack Sheppard would be his coup de grace. But he had to find Jack first. Wild found Elizabeth, made nice and got her drunk, wherein she divulged Jack’s whereabouts. Wild’s goons apprehended Jack, threw him in Newgate Prison, and the court sentenced him to hang. By now, everyone knew Jack Sheppard. Public opinion of the law and the upper class turned sour, especially as

In November, Blueskin Blake hanged, and five days later, the gallows cart trundled to Tyburn Hill for the execution of Jack Sheppard. Reports say 200,000 people followed Jack to his hanging, with women throwing flowers and men fighting for the chance to shake his hand. Jack Sheppard died, well-admired, on November 16, 1724, nine months after the start of his life of crime. And Wild? Well, he recovered physically, but his reputation was never the same. Despised, Wild fell from favor, his gang of thieves turning evidence on him one by one. Tried, convicted and sentenced to death, Wild met the gallows at Tyburn Hill six months after Jack Sheppard. There was also a large crowd that day, but no one clamored to shake Wild’s hand. The courts banished Elizabeth Lyon to America, a fitting place for prostitutes and moral degenerates, though her story is lost after she arrived in Annapolis, Maryland, shortly after Jack’s death. the disparities in treatment between the rich and poor became glaringly obvious. Jack was low-born, clever, unstoppable, heroically in love and handsome. No one actually wanted him to pay for his crimes. They wanted him to outfox the authorities forever. Suddenly, Jack was the champion of the people, not the smug Thief-Taker General. Elizabeth, smarting from her betrayal, gathered another one of Jack’s paramours, Poll Maggot, and the two conspired to help Jack from his latest predicament. They smuggled him a nightgown. After loosening a bar on his cell window, Jack squeezed through the bars into a hallway, donned the nightgown, walked unrecognized across the reception area and out the main door. He escaped Newgate Prison with Elizabeth and Poll only hours before his gallows bell tolled. News of this flagrant escape spread like fire. People cheered him as the Hero of London.

The impassioned tale of Jack Sheppard, Jonathan Wild and Elizabeth Lyon captured the public’s imagination. Only four years after Jack hanged, John Gay composed The Beggar’s Opera, with the main characters of Macheath and Peachum inspired by Jack Sheppard and Jonathan Wild respectively.

In 1928, Brecht and Weill remade Gay’s work into the ribald THE THREEPENNY OPERA, adding, at the very last minute, an intro number for Macheath called “Mack the Knife.” Though Macheath is a psychopathic interpretation of the Jack Sheppard legend, “Mack the Knife,” took on a life of its own, becoming a hit for Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and most memorably in its lounge-worthy Bobby Darin rendition.

Wild hated it. He managed to capture Jack again, this time chaining him to the floor with handcuffs. In October 1724, Sheppard somehow unshackled himself, broke open the padlocks on six separate prison doors and shimmied up the chimney to the rooftop. Once there, he realized he forgot his trademark sheet. So, he returned to his cell, grabbed his sheet, shimmied back to the roof through the chimney, then lowered himself to a neighboring house before spiriting into the night. Just the day before, in a confounding turn of events, Joseph “Blueskin” Blake found himself against Jonathan Wild in court. Wild, still considered the law, gave damning testimony about Blake, who was sentenced to hang. Enraged, Blake drew a blade, slashing Wild’s throat. Chaos ensued; authorities rushed Wild to the hospital. Jack burgled a final time and was apprehended, drunk, in a tavern wearing the clothes he’d purloined. Carted to the maximum-security room in Newgate Prison, Jack was chained to the floor under 300 pounds of irons. Prison guards charged four shillings for a glimpse of the great Jack Sheppard, raking in mountains of money.

If you want to hear “Mack the Knife” and see what Macheath and Peachum are up to, catch up with Jobsite Theater as they perform The Threepenny Opera, Oct. 18 – Nov. 12, in the Jaeb Theater.

WEDNESDAY, OCT 11, 7:00PM FERGUSON HALL Straz Center for the Performing Arts presents

Chris Thile Multiple Grammy® Award-winner and MacArthur Fellow Chris Thile, a member of Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek, and now the host of A Prairie Home Companion, is a mandolin virtuoso, composer and vocalist. With his broad outlook that encompasses classical, rock, jazz, and bluegrass, Thile transcends the borders of conventionally circumscribed genres, creating a distinctly American canon and a new musical aesthetic for performers and audiences alike. A child prodigy, Thile first rose to fame as a member of Grammy Award-winning trio Nickel Creek, with whom he released four albums and sold over two million records. In 2014, along with a national tour, the trio released a new album, A Dotted Line, their first since 2005. As a soloist, Thile has released five albums including his most recent, Bach: Sonatas and Partitas, Vol.1, which was produced by renowned bassist Edgar Meyer. In February 2013, Thile won a Grammy for his work on The Goat Rodeo Sessions, collaborating with Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer and Stuart Duncan. In September 2014, Thile and Meyer released their latest album collaboration, Bass + Mandolin, which won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. Punch Brothers released their latest album, The Phosphorescent Blues, in January 2015, and a follow up EP, The Wireless, in November of the same year. Most recently, Thile released a double-album with Brad Mehldau, titled Chris Thile & Brad Mehldau, in January 2017 and a collection of works from Bach with Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer in April 2017 called Bach Trios. Beginning in fall of 2016, Thile took the helm of A Prairie Home Companion, a public radio favorite since 1974. Garrison Keillor, the show’s creator and host announced: “He is, I think, the great bluegrass performer of our time and he is a beautiful jazz player. There just isn’t anything he can’t do – and he is very enthusiastic about live radio.” facebook.com/ChrisThile/ twitter.com/christhile The taking of photographs and/or use of other recording equipment is strictly prohibited. MONDAY, OCT 16, 7:30PM JAEB THEATER Straz Center for the Performing Arts presents

Michael McDermott as part of Club Jaeb

Michael McDermott burst onto the scene in his early 20’s with his exceptional debut, 620 W. Surf, and subsequently found himself touted as rock’s “Next Big Thing.” MTV, Rolling Stone, The New York Times and even author Stephen King added their appreciative nods, and having the backing of Giant Records and prestigious producers like Brian Koppelman and Don Gehman seemed to go a long way towards assuring his success – overnight success. The missteps and failures that followed, the collapse of an industry that once embraced him as its next sensation, are troubles and travails that either ruin a person completely, or they force a change of attitude and staunch determination to gather one’s resolve to not only survive, but overcome. McDermott vowed to do both. Ten albums in, it’s resulted in Willow Springs (Pauper Sky, June 17, 2016), one of the most honest, daring and defiant recordings of McDermott’s career. Named for the small town where he now resides with his wife and young daughter, it reflects a certain circumspect about his life, the situations he’s encountered, while realizing that ultimately, his fate resided in his own hands. “This is an album of reckoning, I suppose,” McDermott reflects. “There was a real cacophony of change going on in my life at the time ... being a new father, losing my own father, leaving the city for the country, dealing with sobriety, grief, death, mortality, shame and forgiveness. It was a veritable emotional tsunami and yet somehow, I had to navigate through it all. That journey is reflected in these songs. Willow Springs is the name of the place where I took refuge and had to confront a lot of things.” Recorded at his home in the country and fan-funded, Willow Springs finds McDermott behind the boards as producer for the first time with long-time producer and collaborator, Lex Price, doing the mix. Having enlisted a stellar support group of musicians – including multi-instrumentalist, Price; guitarist, Will Kimbrough; keyboard player, John Deaderick and McDermott’s wife, Heather Horton, on backing vocals – McDermott found himself able to craft the unassuming yet cutting sound he envisioned. Indeed, the results bear out the fact that Willow Springs is the most honest and expressive album of McDermott’s extraordinary 25-year career. Songs such as “These Last Few Days,” “Getaway Car,” “Half Empty Kinda Guy,” “One Minus One” and the title track, convey all at once, a sound that’s both reflective and confessional – borne by stark emotion and a tattered, battered delivery that’s both sobering and sublime. McDermott remains more determined than ever, and Willow Springs is the result. “My enthusiasm is only matched by my desire to continue to evolve as an artist,” he insists. Accolades and kudos can be accumulated one minute and quickly dissipate the next. After all, the music biz is a fickle beast and it doesn’t matter how much you pleased the masses last year, last month or even last week, but rather, about what you offer today. Today, McDermott has offered his best. Kudos to Michael McDermott – overnight success. Synopsis

A pair of streetsingers welcome the audience and give an overview of the world the audience is about to enter (“Ballad of Mack the Knife”). Act I begins in the shop of J. J. Peachum, who runs a rather unusual business – he is the boss of London’s beggars. He equips and trains them in return for a cut of whatever they can beg. In the first scene, he enrolls a new beggar with the help of his wife. After finishing with the new man, they notice that their grown daughter Polly did not come home the previous night. The scene shifts to an empty stable where Macheath himself is about to marry Polly, as soon as his gang has stolen and brought all the necessary food and furnishings. No vows are exchanged, but Polly is satisfied, and everyone sits down to a banquet. Polly begins to show a surprisingly tough side of herself (“Pirate Jenny”). The gang gets nervous when Chief of Police Tiger Brown arrives, but it’s all part of the act; Brown had served with Mack in England’s colonial wars and has prevented Mack from being arrested all these years. The old friends duet (“Army Song”). In the next scene, Polly returns home and defiantly announces that she has married Mack. She stands fast against Mr. and Mrs. Peachum’s anger, but she does let slip Brown’s connection to Mack, which they will use to their advantage. Polly tells Mack that her father will have him arrested. He is finally persuaded that Peachum has enough influence to do it and makes arrangements to leave London, explaining his bandit “business” to Polly so she can manage it in his absence. Before he leaves town, he stops at his favorite brothel, where he sees his ex-lover, Jenny. They sing the “Tango Ballad” about their days together, but Mack doesn’t know Mrs. Peachum has bribed Jenny to turn him in. Despite Brown’s apologies, there’s nothing he can do, and off Mack goes to jail. And this is where we take our intermission. After Mack sings the “Ballad of the Easy Life” to begin our second half, another girlfriend, Lucy (Brown’s daughter) and Polly show up at the same time, setting the stage for a nasty argument that builds to the “Jealousy Duet.” After Polly leaves, Lucy engineers Mack’s escape. When Mr. Peachum finds out, he confronts Brown and informs him that he will unleash all of his beggars during Queen Victoria’s coronation parade, ruining the ceremony and costing Brown his job. Jenny comes to the Peachums’ shop to demand her bribe money, which Mrs. Peachum refuses to pay. Jenny reveals that Mack is at Suky Tawdry’s house. When Brown arrives, determined to arrest Peachum and the beggars, he is horrified to learn that the beggars are already in position and only Mr. Peachum can stop them. To placate Peachum, Brown’s only option is to arrest Mack and have him executed. In the next scene, Mack is back in jail and desperately trying to raise enough of a bribe to get out again, even as the gallows are being assembled. Soon it becomes clear that neither Polly nor the gang members can raise any money, and Mack prepares to die. Then a sudden reversal: a messenger on horseback arrives to announce that Macheath has been pardoned by the Queen and granted a castle and pension. The cast then sings the Finale, which ends with a plea that wrongdoings be pursued but not punished too harshly.

He has performed jazz, Broadway shows, rock, country, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian music in large venues for thousands, in concert halls large and small, club stages, intimate dining rooms, theaters and arenas throughout the world on six continents. He’s played extensively as a soloist on The World, the planet’s largest, ultra-exclusive, private mega-yacht. He’s fluent in jazz, AfroCuban, rock and roll, Texas swing, folk and bluegrass, indie underground, pop standards and EDM wizardry. In addition, he’s also an experienced and accomplished producer and arranger. He’s a master programmer, arranger and instrumentalist. Currently, Jeremy serves as music director for Jobsite Theater in Tampa, having overseen past productions like LIZZIE and current production of The Threepenny Opera. He’s also the founder and leader of The Florida Björkestra – a 30-piece ensemble of instrumentalists, vocalists, actors, cosplayers, artists and makers. Their current production, “The Florida Björkestra’s Buffyfest,” is a multimedia presentation of the musical episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer titled “Once More with Feeling.”

WOODY BOND (Percussion) is a Tampabased musician. His previous Jobsite credits are Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Return to the Forbidden Planet, SILENCE! The Musical, and LIZZIE. He’s also appeared in the bay area productions of Andrews Sisters and My Way. He is currently working towards a degree in music education under the instruction of Mark Feinman at the University of Tampa. Woody is also a firstcall fill-in drummer for numerous bands, taking him to both coasts of the U.S.A. and to festivals such as The Fest in Gainesville and Pouzza Fest in Montreal. When he isn’t performing in theater productions, he can be seen playing drums for Station Cases and Help! Police!, organ for DRUG, and teaching students of all ages for his private studio. Woody would like to thank Jobsite for giving him this opportunity to work with such a large and talented cast, his family for encouraging him to follow his dreams, Sara Farag for her support and encouragement, and Nate Irizarry for absolutely nothing. Of all the guitar players that call Tampa Bay home, MARK WARREN (Guitars) is unquestionably one of them. A childhood filled by Star Trek reruns, KISS albums, and roles in youth productions of Shakespeare classics (Hamlet at age 11 - really!) was followed by the requisite post-high school years of aimless garage combos. Eventually, Warren found himself in the midst of a golden age for Tampa Bay’s original music scene from the late ’80s to early ‘00s with stints in fondly remembered groups such as Mod-L Citizen, Leonard Croon Band, and Barely Pink. The latter quartet released three albums and an EP and in Japan were labelmates with Cheap Trick for about 20 minutes just before the band’s stateside label went belly-up. In more recent times, Warren and his Telecaster have been busy with “power lounge” legends the Vodkanauts (established 2002, currently on an open-ended hiatus) and classic country quintet The Sara Rose Band (appearing Sunday, December 10th at Ella’s in Seminole Heights – come on down, y’all!) Between those two bands and a number of one-off ensembles, Warren has performed at dozens of concerts for WMNF 88.5 Community Radio honoring artists such as

David Bowie, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, and The Who. Plans are afoot for Warren and a number of his Threepenny castmates to play tribute to Queen for yet another WMNF event this coming November. The Threepenny Opera will be Warren’s third outing with Jobsite Theater. In 2014, Warren and his Theremin were part of the award-winning band in Return To The Forbidden Planet and he played guitar in the band for last year’s rockin’ production of LIZZIE. DAVID GAMBINO (Reed 1) Newly relocated from New Orleans, La., David is a multi-instrumentalist specializing in woodwinds. David has spent equal time on stage as he has below it (or in this production’s case, ABOVE it). Some have seen him on stage as Marcellus Washburn in A.C.T.’s production of The Music Man, others have seen him playing Bari Sax in City of Angels for Theatre Baton Rouge. Most recently, David was seen playing unnecessarily large instruments with Chuck Owen and the Jazz Surge for their release of a new album entitled Whispers on the Wind with guests Randy Brecker, Gregoire Maret and Chick Corea. Gambino is currently a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of South Florida. Usually you’ll find him stuck halfway in a copy machine there, trying to print big band music for everyone. JARRYD DOLLARD (Reeds 2) Jazz saxophonist, clarinetist and playwright, Jarryd is known for his soulful sound, comedic personality and his electrifying, high-energy performances. Recently, Jarryd was the saxophonist at Orlando’s premiere Blues Club, the BB KING Blues Club, performing with the Lucille Band. He has also toured worldwide (Europe, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico, Grand Cayman, St Thomas and Puerto Rico) with the BB King All-Star Band onboard the Holland America Cruise Ship for two years. Jarryd is a University of South Florida graduate with a degree in Technical Communications and New Media and minor in Music. While at USF, Jarryd became a member of the prestigious organizations Progressive Black Men Inc. and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. In addition, he is a graduate of the Manhattan Hairstyling TICKETS: 813.229.STAR (7827) • STRAZCENTER.ORG

Academy, obtaining an unrestricted barbers license, and presently displays his artwork at A Cut Above Barber and Beauty Shop. MIKE HENRY (Trombone) is a freelance trombonist from the Tampa Bay area who has appeared with Rafi Cruz and his Orchestra, The Funk Man Band, The Santiago Symphony Orchestra, and the Florida Worship Choir and Orchestra. Mike is also an active member of Global Mission Projects, volunteering his spare time in Cuba with up and coming Christian musicians. Mike’s first love is jazz, soul and salsa. When he is not immersed in his love for music and performance, Mike gigs with Duke Energy to keep the lights on. STEVEN VOUGHT (Trumpet I) is a Florida-born trumpet player who received his undergraduate degree from Stetson University and is currently finishing his masters at the University of South Florida. Outside of school, he has worked with such groups as The Creede Repertory Theatre, The New Tampa Players and the Ocala Symphony. AVA KORD OCTLANCH (Trumpet II) is a senior at Andrew High School and is thrilled for this, her first professional gig. I. S. M. ALISON BURNS (Choreography/Associate Director) is thrilled to be back at Jobsite for yet another epic musical! You last saw her choreography in Jobsite’s LIZZIE and SILENCE! The Musical. Other choreography credits include: The Rocky Horror Show, Godspell, Waist Watchers and Respect (Straz), as well as multiple youth theatre shows including Key.Pin It Real; an original show by Kathie Lee Gifford and David Friedman. Burns is a graduate of New York Cityʼs American Musical and Dramatic Academy and when she’s not dancing, she can be found performing, directing and coaching voice and acting nationwide. findyourlightcoaching.org Thanks to David and the entire Jobsite cast and crew! KEITH COLLEGE (Assistant Stage Manager) is a first-year college student at HCC studying Drama. His main interests reside in performance, stage management and music. Keith also plans to write plays of his own and work on his band. You may remember Keith during last year’s production 22

of LIZZIE as the ASM/ roadie and dashing across the stage moving the props. Keith is delighted to be a part of this production and is forever grateful to Jobsite for the opportunity. RYAN E. FINZELBER (Set and Lighting Designer) is a local freelance lighting designer who also serves as Resident Lighting Designer for Urbanite Theatre in Sarasota. Recent lighting credits include Gloucester Blue, A Skull in Connemara (Jobsite Theatre), Pilgrims, Bo-Nita, My Barking Dog, Breadcrumbs, The Drowning Girls (Urbanite Theatre), Broadway in Black (West Coast Black Theatre Troupe), Red Velvet, Peter and the Starcatcher, Assassins (freeFall Theatre), Grounded, Stalking the Bogeyman (Florida Studio Theatre), Big Fish (Sarasota Players), The Bridges of Madison County (Manatee Players). Visit finzelberdesign.com for more information and production photos! DAVID M. JENKINS (Director) is the Producing Artistic Director and a co-founder of Jobsite. He holds a Ph.D. in Communication (Performance Studies) from the University of South Florida, an M.F.A. in Acting from the University of Florida, and a B.A. in Theater Performance, also from USF. He has additionally studied with Moscow State University, the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts (GITIS) and the San Francisco Mime Troupe. In addition to his full-time work for Jobsite, David teaches in the Honors College at USF as an adjunct instructor. He has recently directed productions of Gloucester Blue, As You Like It, LIZZIE, The Maids, SILENCE! The Musical, Annapurna (with Summer Bohnenkamp), and Twelfth Night for Jobsite as well as Annie Baker’s The Aliens for Stageworks Theatre. He was directed by Israel Horovitz in Sins of the Mother (Frankie/Philly Verga), and has been recently seen in Cloud Nine (Betty/Edward), A Skull in Connemara (Tom Hanlon), Time Stands Still (James), The Hound of the Baskervilles (Dr. Watson) and The Lonesome West (Coleman). The latter earned him a Theatre Tampa Bay nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor, recognition as a Top 9 performance of 2013 by Creative Loafing’s Mark Leib, and the Best Actor Award in CL’s Best of the Bay Reader’s Poll. He was the 2014 recipient of the Best Director Award from CL’s Reader’s

Poll and Best Director of a Musical in the BroadwayWorld Tampa Regional Awards; he also won the 2015 BroadwayWorld Regional Award for Best Actor (Times Stands Still). Creative Loafing has twice honored him as both Best Artistic Director and Best Actor. David has published articles in the scholarly journals Text & Performance Quarterly, Liminalities, and Departures in Critical Qualitative Research. He lives in Tampa Heights in a neat old house with his rad wife and a mess of critters. HEATHER KRUEGER (Associate Director) has been a staple in the Tampa Bay theater scene for more than 20 years. Her impressive vocal ability and stage presence makes her a force to be reckoned with. Heather has performed in shows such as The Marvelous Wonderettes, LIZZIE, SILENCE! The Musical, Bright Lights Big City, Broadway Bound, Forbidden Broadway, The

Rocky Horror Picture Show and Godspell, just to name a few. You can currently find her touring with Let’s Hang On, a Frankie Valli tribute show and performing in shows at Busch Gardens. Heather is excited to be playing a role behind the scenes in this production of The Threepenny Opera. MATTHEW RAY (Stage Manager) is excited to be back in the Jaeb with Jobsite. He is a graduate of the USF theater program and has been working in a Tampa for the past six years. His previous stage managing credits include The Marvelous Wonderettes (StageWorks), Cloud Nine (Jobsite), LIZZIE (Jobsite), and SILENCE! The Musical (Jobsite). He has directed a few things in the area as well, including Collected Stories and Almost an Evening. Straz Center for the Performing Arts presents

Neil deGrasse Tyson: An Astrophysicist Reads the Newspaper Everyone’s favorite astrophysicist returns for another out-of-this-world experience in An Astrophysicist Reads the Newspaper, an exploration of all that is funny, illuminating and alarming in reports about the world’s current events. ABOUT NEIL DEGRASSE TYSON Neil deGrasse Tyson was born and raised in New York City where he was educated in the public schools clear through his graduation from the Bronx High School of Science. Tyson went on to earn his BA in Physics from Harvard and his PhD in Astrophysics from Columbia. Tyson’s professional research interests are broad, but include star formation, exploding stars, dwarf galaxies and the structure of our Milky Way. Tyson was appointed by then-President Bush in 2001 to serve on a 12-member commission that studied the future of the U.S. aerospace industry. The final report was published in 2002 and contained recommendations (for Congress and for the major agencies of the government) that would promote a thriving future of transportation, space exploration and national security. In 2004, Tyson was once again appointed by then-President Bush to serve on a nine-member commission on the implementation of the United States space exploration policy, dubbed the Moon, Mars, and Beyond commission. This group navigated a path by which the new space vision can become a successful part of the American agenda. In 2006, the head of NASA appointed Tyson to serve on its prestigious Advisory Council, which helps guide NASA through its perennial need to fit its ambitious vision into its restricted budget. In addition to dozens of professional publications, Dr. Tyson has written, and continues to write, for the public. From 1995 to 2005, Tyson was a monthly essayist for Natural History magazine under the title “Universe.” Among Tyson’s ten books is his memoir The Sky is Not the Limit: Adventures of an Urban Astrophysicist; and Origins: Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution, co-written with Donald Goldsmith. Origins is the companion book to 26

CENTERBILL • OCTOBER 2017

the PBS-NOVA four-part mini-series Origins, in which Tyson served as on-camera host. The program premiered on September 28 and 29, 2004. Two of Tyson’s recent books are the playful and informative Death By Black Hole and Other Cosmic Quandaries, which was a New York Times bestseller, and The Pluto Files: The Rise and Fall of America’s Favorite Planet, chronicling his experience at the center of the controversy over Pluto’s planetary status. The PBS/NOVA documentary “The Pluto Files,” based on the book, premiered in March 2010. For five seasons, beginning in the fall of 2006, Tyson appeared as the on-camera host of PBSNOVA’s spinoff program NOVA ScienceNOW, which is an accessible look at the frontier of all the science that shapes the understanding of our place in the universe. During the summer of 2009, Tyson identified a stable of professional standup comedians to assist his effort in bringing science to commercial radio with the NSF-funded pilot program StarTalk. Now also a popular podcast and a limited-run television series on the National Geographic Channel, StarTalk combines celebrity guests with informative yet playful banter. The target audience is all those people who never thought they would, or could, like science. In its first year on television, StarTalk was nominated for a Best Informational Programming Emmy®. Tyson is the recipient of nineteen honorary doctorates and the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal, the highest award given by NASA to a non-government citizen. His contributions to the public appreciation of the cosmos have been recognized by the International Astronomical Union in their official naming of asteroid 13123 Tyson. On the lighter side, Tyson was voted Sexiest Astrophysicist Alive by People Magazine in 2000. In February 2012, Tyson released his tenth book, containing every thought he has ever had on the past, present and future of space exploration: Space Chronicles: Facing the Ultimate Frontier. In March 2014, Tyson served as Executive Editor and on camera host and narrator for Cosmos: A Space Time Odyssey, the 21st century continuation of Carl Sagan’s landmark television series. The show ran thirteen episodes in primetime on the FOX network, and appeared in 181 countries in 45 languages around the world on the National Geographic Channels. Cosmos, which is also available in DVD and BluRay, won four Emmy Awards®, a Peabody Award, two Critics Choice awards as well as a dozen other industry recognitions. Tyson is the fifth head of the world-renowned Hayden Planetarium in New York City and the first occupant of its Frederick P. Rose Directorship. He is also a research associate of the Department of Astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History. Neil deGrasse Tyson lives in New York City with his wife, a former IT Manager with Bloomberg Financial Markets, and their two kids. The taking of photographs and/or use of other recording equipment is strictly prohibited. Program information provided by the cast and/or production company.

The group’s name, SIRO, means “white” in Japanese, distinguished by their white-painted faces, and signifies “belonging to no group, impossible to define as anybody.” SIRO-A fuses mime, groundbreaking visual effects and a techno soundtrack to bring their crazy imagination into reality. The group amazed America by their performance on America’s Got Talent season 10, earning the “Golden Buzzer” from Piers Morgan and a standing ovation from all notable judges that sent the team to the semifinals –a live performance at Radio City Music Hall. The Straz Center Endowment Fund

The Straz Center’s Endowment was established during the construction phase of the Center in the 1980s. The second phase of endowment growth occurred between 1999 and 2004, when The Campaign for The Center, a comprehensive effort combining endowment and building needs, increased the endowment to $30 million. Increased investment income realized from a permanent and growing endowment is critical to the success and future of the Straz Center. We continue to build the endowment to ensure our financial stability and secure the Center’s programming for the 21st century and beyond. For more information on how you can participate, please call the development department at 813.222.1035.

Volunteer Recognition

The Straz Center would like to recognize and thank all the volunteers who provide support through their service both in front and in back of house. Without the countless hours put in by our ushers, lounge hosts, retail volunteers, office volunteers and Patel Conservatory volunteers, we could not provide the world class service our patrons have come to expect. As we celebrate our 2017-18 season, the Straz Center would like to extend an extra special thank you to those volunteers who have been with us since the first season in 1987-88. BECOME

AN ANNUAL DONOR

Through her work using improv games, theater instructor Sarah Berland helps special-needs adults learn to adapt to change so they can hold a job. With a dependable job, they get a shot at an independent life. Because of annual donors, Sarah gets to realize her dream: to be the best teacher for all her students. She can, because you did. Annual donations supply teachers the resources they need, whether they’re in our classrooms or in our community, to provide unparalleled instruction and change lives.
