As the summer holidays approach, we understand that nine weeks off can be quite a stretch to keep children entertained. Ideas may be hard to come by, but fear not – our special wellbeing and transition booklet is here to help!

We are delighted to present this booklet, meticulously crafted to support your transition to the next academic year while fostering your overall wellbeing. Within these pages, you’ll discover tailored adventures and challenges for your year group, ranging from outdoor explorations to creative projects and mindfulness exercises.

We firmly believe that becoming a positive and resilient learner is key to success and our booklet aims to empower you on this journey. So, why not make the most of the summer break by ticking off as many activities as you can before September? Let the adventure begin....

GETTING READY FOR YEAR 6

Read Read Read

Try to read three new books (of your choice) over the summer.

High-Frequency Words

Go through all of your Year 4 and Year 5 high-frequency words so that you are raring to go in Year 6 !

To Be or Not to Be ...

Write a script for a short play and perform it with family members or friends.

What Time Is It?

Become accustomed to telling the time using analogue and digital clocks.

Be a Techie

If you have one at home, practise logging into a computer and creating Word and PowerPoint documents.

Bonjour mes amis! Go through your French vocabulary and try Duolingo in readiness for your French trip next summer.

Times Tables Mastery

Become a master of times tables up to 12x12. How quickly can you complete a Super 144?

Contents & Index Pages

Look at a non-fiction book (maybe an atlas or children’s encyclopedia) and get used to using the contents pages and index sections to find information.

Figure Out Teams

Log on to Microsoft Teams, access a summer holiday assignment and then ‘hand in’ (submit).

LOOKING AFTER YOUR WELLBEING

Stay Active

Have fun going on bike rides, swimming or going for long walks with friends or family. Get moving and stay healthy!

Mindfulness Practice

Spend time each day practising mindfulness or meditation to promote mental wellbeing.

Start a Gardening Project

Start a small garden or tend to potted plants to learn about nature and responsibility.

Go Cloud Watching

Sit or lie down outside, look up into the sky and watch the clouds. What images do you see?

Community Service

Volunteer for community service projects or charity initiatives to foster empathy and compassion.

Life’s A Picnic

Plan a family picnic. Can you make the sandwiches and salads and cut up the strawberries? Can you choose the cakes and sweet treats? Pack up the hamper and spend time with those you love.

BECOMING MORE INDEPENDENT

Self-Care Routine

Establish a daily self-care routine that includes activities such as exercise, grooming and relaxation.

Do Some Chores

Ask if you can help your parents with some chores around the house. Offer to clear up after a meal, fold laundry or get dusting those surfaces.

Basic First Aid

Learn basic first aid skills like how to apply bandages and how to clean cuts and scrapes. Do you know when to seek help from an adult?

Pack Your Bag

If you are going on holiday or staying overnight with a grandparent or friend, pack your own bag (pyjamas ... check, toothbrush ... check).

BECOMING MORE INDEPENDENT

On the Buses

Take a public bus or train with a parent. Read the schedules, know the route and pay the fare – be in charge!

Set Yourself Goals

Set a few small, achievable goals for the upcoming school year, both academically and personally. This will help foster your independence and self-motivation.

Finding Your Way

Learn how to read simple maps and navigate basic directions. Can you direct your parents home from the supermarket ?

Would you know what to say or do if you had to call the emergency services? (Ambulance, Fire Service or Police). Could you give them your address and your parents’ mobile numbers? Could you find a safe meeting spot?

Explore New Hobbies

Try out different hobbies or interests, such as photography, coding or dancing to discover new passions.

Garden Camping

Camp outside for the night in your garden. Make sure you have snacks and a torch!

HAVING SOME FUN

Family Movie Night

Enjoy movie nights with family members, discussing themes and messages from the films. Would you recommend it to a friend ? Give your review.

Get Creative

Use recycled materials or items found in the garden (moss, leaves, flower petals, sticks, etc.) to create a work of art.

Build a Den

Inside or outside, create a cosy den –you can do this on your own or with friends and family.

Skim a Stone

If you visit a beach, lake or local pond this summer, try skimming stones. Tip: Flat stones are the best !

Don’t forget to play outside. Skip, jump, run, hop, catch or throw. Be as active as you can!
