GETTING READY FOR YEAR 3: Academic
Write a Letter
Write a friendly letter to a classmate or friend, sharing a summer experience and asking questions about theirs.
Explore Maps
Look at a world map and identify key features like continents, countries and cities.
What’s Your Favourite?
Ask friends or family about their top five favourite foods and create a pictogram or bar chart to represent the data.
Create a Colourful Poster
Maybe persuading people to recycle or conserve water. Use ‘persuasive’ language and add colourful drawings to make it eye-catching.
GETTING READY FOR YEAR 3: Academic
Audiobook Adventure
Listen to an audiobook of a favourite story and discuss new words or phrases with a parent.
Numbers Numbers Numbers
Confidently retell number bonds to 10, 20 and beyond ... and don’t forget your 2, 5 and 10 times tables!
Story Starters
Write some short, imaginative stories based on creative story starters, e.g. “One day I found a mysterious object in my garden ...”.
Make a Short Play
Script a short play about a magical journey or a funny adventure and perform it for family or friends.
GETTING READY FOR YEAR 3: Academic
Play Shops
Create a pretend shopping list (maybe using your toys) with prices and practise adding up the total cost, using coins to make different amounts.
Get Lost in a Good Book
Choose a chapter book to read on your own (or with help from a family member).
Fact-Finding Mission
Research an interesting topic online or in a book about a place you have visited, then write a short report summarising the key points.
Read and Retell
Read a short story and then retell the main events in your own words, focusing on the key details.
GETTING READY FOR YEAR 3: Academic
Design a Pizza
Can you work out fractions of each ingredient used, e.g. How many peppers? Mushrooms? Ham? Can you split these fractions into quarters? Or halves?
Tales of Adventure
Write a story set in an imaginary world, focusing on exciting events and characters or pick your favourite film and retell the ending. Now can you act it out?
Dress to Impress
Are you now an expert at dressing yourself ? Are you confident with buttons and zips?
I Love Food
Learn to prepare simple, healthy snacks like fruit salads and sandwiches.

Come Rain or Shine
Have a water fight in the garden with friends or family.
Walk in Nature
Go on a nature walk in the local park or garden.

Can you write your full name? Do you know your home address by heart?

Good Table Manners
When having meals, practise good table manners by making sure you are holding and using your cutlery (knife, fork and spoon) correctly.
Bounce Bounce Bounce
Don’t forget to play outside. Skip, jump, run, hop, catch. Be as active as you can!
Self-Care
Practise proper hand-washing and teeth-brushing techniques.
Creative Fun
Draw, paint and colour in – express yourself with art! Practise cutting along a line, glueing and colouring as accurately as you can.

Be a Techie
If you have one at home, practise logging into a computer and typing on a keyboard.
Practise Makes Perfect
Practise tying your shoelaces and tying your school tie (if you wear one). Can you also fasten your seatbelt?
Climb a Tree
Find the perfect tree to climb (in your garden or out on a walk).
Time for Green Fingers
Plant seeds in pots or a small garden patch and learn about how plants grow by watering and caring for them.
Game Night
Try a family game night (you could play board games, charades or card games).

Play in the Woods
This is a great place to build a den and learn how to make smores!
Keep Things Tidy
Help out at home by tidying away your toys after you have finished playing with them.
