As the summer holidays approach, we understand that nine weeks off can be quite a stretch to keep children entertained. Ideas may be hard to come by, but fear not – our special wellbeing and transition booklet is here to help!

We are delighted to present this booklet, meticulously crafted to support your transition to the next academic year while fostering your overall wellbeing. GETTING READY FOR YEAR 5: Academic

A Diary with a Twist

Start a summer diary, but write the entries from the perspective of your favourite book character.

What Time Is It?

Become accustomed to telling the time using an analogue clock.

Write a Letter

Compose a letter to a friend or family member, sharing a summer experience and asking questions about theirs.

Read Read Read

Try to read three new books (of your choice) over the summer.

Times Tables Mastery

Become a master of times tables up to 12x12. How quickly can you complete a Super 144 ?

GETTING READY FOR YEAR 5: Academic

Why Chinthurst?

Write a persuasive brochure on why someone should come to Chinthurst.

Logic Puzzles

Learn how to do Sudoku puzzles, crosswords and other logic puzzles. Beware, they can become very addictive!

Keep a Word Journal

Create lists of synonyms and antonyms for any interesting words you find in books over the summer.

Create a Comic

Develop, write and illustrate a comic strip. Heroes and villains or a friends’ adventure? Be creative!

Sit Back and Relax

Listen to an audiobook while relaxing.

GETTING READY FOR YEAR 5: Academic

Get Building

Engage in small building projects involving measuring and geometry, such as making a birdhouse or a simple shelf.

Test Yourself

How quickly can you read a page of a book and then summarise it accurately? Try and beat it next time.

To Be or Not to Be

Write a script for a short play and perform it with family members or friends.

Watch the Olympics

Choose an Olympic event and keep score during games, practising addition and subtraction.

Time for a Change

Choose one of your favourite books and rewrite the ending. Will it be happily ever after or a tear-jerker ? It’s up to you!

GETTING READY FOR YEAR 5: Pastoral

Works of Art

Read about a famous piece of artwork, artist or art movement and create your own interpretations through drawings or paintings.

Learn a New Language

Begin learning a new language through apps, online resources or language workbooks. Which one would wow us the most?

Listen to Music

Listen to some different genres of music, learn about musical instruments or try playing a new instrument. You might discover a hidden talent!

Try a Scavenger Hunt

Explore the great outdoors and go on a scavenger hunt to identify different plants, animals and natural geographical features.

GETTING READY FOR YEAR 5: Pastoral

Would you know what to say or do if you had to call the emergency services? (Ambulance, Fire Service or Police). Ask your parent or carer about this. Remember – never call unless it’s a real emergency!

Remember Remember

Do you know your parents’ mobile phone numbers? Learn at least one off by heart.

Junk Modelling

Get creative with arts and crafts projects using different materials, e.g. paper, clay or items from your recycling box.

If you go out for a meal at a restaurant with your family this summer, speak to the waiter and order what everyone wants.

GETTING READY FOR YEAR 5: Pastoral

Mindfulness Practice

Try daily mindfulness exercises such as deep breathing, meditation or yoga to promote relaxation and focus.

Community Service

Volunteer for community service projects or charity initiatives to foster empathy and compassion.

Help Someone Else

Ask if you can help your parents with a job around the house. Offer to clear up after a meal, help wash up or change your bedsheets.

Get Creative

Use various materials you find in the garden (moss, leaves, flower petals, sticks, etc.) and create a magnificent landscape collage.

GETTING READY FOR YEAR 5: Pastoral

Think Outside The Box

Learn about different countries through books or videos and discover their cultures and cuisines. Maybe even taste some!

Get Tied in Knots

Do you know how to tie a knot? Make a bow? Grab some string and have a go!

Bounce Bounce Bounce

Don’t forget to play outside. Skip, jump, run, hop, catch or throw. Be as active as you can!
