SENDCo (Tutor Point Lead) Teacher)

The SENDCo, in collaboration with the Headmaster and governing body, plays a key role in determining the strategic development of the SEND policy and provision in the school in order to raise the achievement of children with SEND. The SENDCo takes day-to-day responsibility for the operation of the SEND policy and coordination of the provision made for individual children with SEND, working closely with staff, parents and carers, and other agencies. The SENDCo also provides relevant professional guidance to colleagues with the aim of securing high-quality teaching for children with SEND.

HOURS OF WORK:

• Monday to Friday

• 8.00 am to 5.30 pm

• Term-time

Role and Responsibilities:

Teaching and Learning:

• Identify and adopt the most effective teaching approaches for SEND pupils. Monitor, review and update the SEND and EAL policies on an annual basis and oversee their day-to-day operation;

• Monitor any Pupil Passports and IEPs for children with SEND;

• Maintain appropriate and sufficient Tutor Point resources that are accessible to all colleagues teaching the pupils;

• Co-ordinate the provision for the Tutor Point children with SEND and EAL;

• Contribute to the in-service training of all staff with regard to SEND and EAL issues;

• Identify the individual needs of pupils who receive support at the school;

• Contribute to raising standards of attainment by appropriately preparing and teaching stimulating and energetic lessons of a high standard designed to meet the needs of the pupils in your charge;

• Assist pupils to learn as effectively as possible in both group situations and individually, inside and outside the classroom;

• Follow programmes of study, carrying out necessary assessments, providing full information/comments for records and monitoring pupils in accordance with agreed departmental and school policies;

• Select appropriate learning resources and develop study skills through the Library, ICT and other sources;

• In collaboration with other Tutor Point teachers, support and advise mainstream subject teachers to define appropriate activities for the pupils and to maintain and update all appropriate data and reports;

• Assess and record children’s progress systematically and keep records to check work is understood and completed, monitor strengths and weaknesses, inform planning and recognise the level at which each child is achieving.

Recording and Assessment:

• Undertake lesson observations and subsequent follow up with colleagues;

• Assess all pupils appropriately before they start Tutor Point lessons;

• Collect and interpret specialist assessment and performance data and share with other relevant bodies, including the Governors as appropriate;

• Maintain and oversee the records of all Tutor Point children with SEND and EAL;

• Determine training needs for the department and assist staff in identifying key CPD courses to attend;

• Undertake data analysis of exam and test results, both externally and internally marked;

• Liaise with external professional agencies to include Senior Schools and 11+ Grammar Schools exam concessions;

• Keep parents informed about their child’s progress through individual and at Tutor Point Parents’ meetings;

• Keep the Headmaster and Deputy Head Academic fully informed of national developments within the area of SEND, that will impact the future direction of the subject within St Piran’s;

• Develop plans which identify clear targets and success criteria for its development and/or maintenance;

• Liaise with parents and other agencies, such as the medical profession, social workers, speech and language therapists and educational psychologists;

• Prepare and carefully check school reports and reports for external agencies as requested;

• Attend and contribute purposefully to the life of the school through effective participation in briefings, staff meetings, and departmental meetings and through the use of management systems necessary to coordinate the management of the school;

• Take responsibility for acquiring and improving skills by attending future training as required;

• Write and check Pupil Passports, which identify key areas of need and support;

• Undertake break and lunchtime duties as requested;

• Lead an after-school activity.

Management

• Co-ordinate the work of Tutor Point teachers;

• Liaise with and advise fellow teachers on SEND and EAL matters;

• Provide a Tutor Point Development Plan with financial requests in the Easter Term for the Headmaster;

• Line manage and performance partner all other members of the Tutor Point team;

• Oversee the Tutor Point budget.

Person Specification and Qualifications

A minimum Level 5 accredited qualification in Special Needs, with an understanding of the most frequently seen learning difficulties (e.g. Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, ASC) and how to remediate them ✓

Ability to liaise with a range of people inside and outside school - including colleagues, parents, other specialists ✓

Ability to interpret and act upon educational psychology and other specialist reports ✓

Sound knowledge of the teaching of reading and writing ✓

Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice ✓

Empathy with children with SEND, and their parents ✓

Experience with a school information system ✓

Qualified, experienced primary school teacher ✓

Ability to assess pupils with SEND ✓

Ability to lead SEND training with teachers and other support staff ✓

Experience with EAL ✓
