Welcome to Lower School

Year 1 is a very happy place to be with lots of new and exciting things to look forward to. It might feel strange to be in a different part of the school but you will soon get used to it. The good news is that it is not very far to walk to lunch!

Here are some things we thought you might like to hear about before your first day. We are looking forward to seeing you in September!

Please make sure you are at school before registration at 8.25 am. When you get to your classroom, don’t forget to hang up your belongings and put your book bag in your tray.

Each classroom has a cloakroom area for you to hang up your coat, blazer, swimming bag, PE kit and games kit. The peg area looks like this and you will have a named peg:

at School

The Year 1 classrooms are lovely, big, bright rooms and exciting places to learn. There are three different classrooms that look like this:

This

is the classroom by the All Weather Pitch

This

is the classroom in the middle

This is the classroom next to White Lodge

Assembly

On a Monday morning, Year 1-6 have a whole school assembly, in the Tippet Hall. It’s a lovely way to start the week off together.

On Fridays there is a fun, celebration assembly where you might get to walk down the red carpet. Year 1 and Year 2 also go to Chapel together for their own assembly too.

Lessons

You will spend lots of time in your classroom, where your form teacher will teach you but you will also have other teachers for some lessons, just like you did in Reception.

Your teacher will put up a visual timetable in your classroom each day so you know what lessons you will have. You will soon get used to the routine:

Timetable

Your timetable might look something like this:

All about Year 1

Here is what some of the current Year 1 children have to say about being in Year 1:

In Maths you will get to learn lots of new things. We use lots of new equipment. We learn about time and money.

English lessons are great fun. You will get a book to write in. We listen to lots of lovely stories too.

In DT, you get to make lots of cool, moving things IT is my favourite lesson because we get to play games and use the computers in the IT room just like in Reception.

Madam Powell comes to our classroom to teach us French just like she came to Reception.

Science is fun, we learn lots of fun things. Sometimes we do experiments.

Music is exciting and fun and we learn lots of new things and perform in a Christmas show.

In RS
get

you

to learn about different religions.

We have great Topic lessons in Year 1 and learn lots of cool new things.

PSHE is really relaxing and calming. If you felt worried, this lesson will make you feel much better.

PE is fun and we do lots of running and practice lots of different sports. I really enjoy playing tennis

In Art, you can be very creative. Your lessons are in the art room which is a wonderful room to work in. I love art! Your teachers are called, Mrs Gravenor and Miss Alison

You get to tell your teacher what you would like for lunch each day. Just like in Reception you will sit in the and eat in the dining room. The teachers will ask you what you’d like to eat for lunch each morning when you get into your classroom.

In Year 1 you will carry on coming into school dressed in your games kit in the first term. After Christmas you will get changed in the classroom. This will make you feel really grown up! You may have a few different teachers but they are all very kind and helpful.

Lunchtime and After School Clubs

You will be able to join lunchtime and after school clubs if you want to. There might be some new ones for you to try that you didn’t have in Reception, like fencing and tennis.

Homework

In Year 1 you will carry on learning to read and will need to read to an adult every day at home, like you did in Reception.

You will carry on learning phonics and spellings and start to use a program called Spelling shed. This has some fun games to play, to help you learn your weekly spellings. Your teacher will also give you a half termly grid to choose fun activities to do at home too.

STPIRAN’SSCHOOL|The School Day STPIRAN’SSCHOOL|Page 10

Break time and Lunch Times

At breaktime you will have a snack in your classroom, just like you did in Reception.

At lunchtime you will have a set place to sit at just like you did in Reception.

Always try to have a ‘colourful’ plate with lots of healthy vegetables.

Although you will have plenty of opportunities to have water at break and at lunch times, you must bring a water bottle into the classroom.

Clan Points

In Year 1 you will be put into a clan. The clans are called:

North, South, East and West and your PE shirt will have a coloured strip on it to match the clan you are in.

You can earn lots of clan points for yourself and your clan. You can also earn pom poms for your class which go towards a class rewards. You also did this in Reception.

The most important thing is to just try your best and ask if you are not sure about something.

Lost Property

Try to look after your things as well as you can but if you do lose something you can check with Matron or look in the baskets which are in the information lobby, by the dining room. Please try to name as much as possible, as it is much easier to help locate or return.

If you are worried

All the staff at school, particularly your form teachers and your lovely Teaching Assistants are there to help you if you feel ‘lost’, worried or simply don’t know that you should be doing. We also have a special worry monster.

This is what the current Year 1 wanted to share with you:

Moving up to a new year is scary because you don’t know what your new teacher will be like but they always end up being nice.”

“The teachers are very good at helping you if you are worried about anything. Just speak to them and they will get things sorted for you.”

“The teachers are very kind and they are called Miss Shilston, Mrs Williams and Mrs Omar, so do not worry.”

“Please do not worry about Year 1 – it is so much fun. You get a new teacher – hope that you enjoy!”

Year 1 is very nice and nothing to feel worried about. You will soon get used to it.

We hope this Handbook has helped to give you a taste of what there is to look forward to. Remember we are all here to help each other! Some of the more familiar faces you will get to know are on the next page.
