Tutor Point (SEND Teacher)

The duties and responsibilities of a Tutor Point Teacher are to support children with learning difficulties. They should provide information and advice to all teachers regarding these pupils’ individual needs so that children are afforded the opportunity to develop and improve their academic ability and ultimately achieve their full potential. Experience in Learning Support is essential as well as a broad working knowledge of SEND issues.

• Monday to Friday

• 8.00 am to 4.30 pm

• Term-time

• Part-time would be considered (3 or 4 days)

Role and Responsibilities:

Teaching and Learning:

• Identify the individual needs of pupils who receive support at the school;

• Contribute to raising standards of attainment by appropriately preparing and teaching stimulating and energetic lessons of a high standard designed to meet the needs of the pupils in your charge;

• Assist pupils to learn as effectively as possible in both group situations and individually, inside and outside the classroom;

• Follow programmes of study, carry out necessary assessments, provide full information/comments for records and monitor pupils in accordance with agreed departmental and school policies;

• Select appropriate learning resources and develop study skills through the Library, ICT and other sources;

• Review, monitor and evaluate own practice, ensuring that teaching is academically differentiated and appropriate to the individual;

• In collaboration with other Tutor Point teachers, support and advise mainstream subject teachers to define appropriate activities for the pupils and to maintain and update all appropriate data and reports;

• Assess and record children’s progress systematically and keep records to check that work is understood and completed, monitor strengths and weaknesses, inform planning and recognise the level at which each child is achieving;

• Mark and monitor children’s work regularly and set work collaboratively with the mainstream teachers;

• Visit your pupils within the classroom, providing teacher-directed support for groups and targeted individuals.

• In collaboration with the SENDCo, develop plans which identify clear targets and success criteria for its development and/or maintenance;

• Assist the SENDCo in liaising with parents and other agencies, such as the medical profession, social workers, speech and language therapists and educational psychologists;

• Follow all codes of practice in relation to the school’s Behaviour Policy and pastoral care ethos;

• Ensure the well-being of all children by following health and safety regulations including the reporting of accidents and incidents;

• Prepare school reports and reports for external agencies as requested by the SENDCo or SLT;

• Attend and contribute purposefully to the life of the school through effective participation in briefings, staff meetings, and departmental meetings and through the use of management systems necessary to coordinate the management of the school;

• Take responsibility for acquiring and improving skills by attending future training as required;

• Assist with administration within the Tutor Point Department;

• Write Pupil Passports, which identify key areas of need and support;

• Liaise and co-operate with parents, staff and others involved in the smooth, effective, safe and secure operation of the school;

• Attend and lead parents’ evenings relevant to your pupils;

• Undertake break and lunchtime duties as requested;

• Lead an after-school activity.

Person Specification and Qualifications

A minimum Level 5 accredited qualification in Special Needs, with an understanding of the most frequently seen learning difficulties (e.g. Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, ASC) and how to remediate them ✓

Ability to liaise with a range of people inside and outside school - including colleagues, parents, other specialists ✓

Ability to interpret and act upon educational psychology and other specialist reports ✓

Sound knowledge of the teaching of reading and writing ✓

Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice ✓

Empathy with children with SEND, and their parents ✓

Experience with a school information system ✓

Qualified, experienced primary school teacher ✓

Ability to assess pupils with SEND ✓

Ability to lead SEND training with teachers and other support staff ✓

Experience with EAL ✓
