SERVICE DOG REGISTRATION

F

or those of us who are dog lovers, there is nothing better than a welcome home from a warm puppy who has unconditional love for you and cannot wait for you to come home – and walk him, feed him, and play with him. As our love for our dogs has grown, so has our love for taking them with us wherever and whenever we can. So, we can’t take them to work – or at least most of us can’t – but we CAN take them to outdoor cafes, dog parks and stores that cater to doggie needs.

Here at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, we too want to welcome your furry friends and have some areas where they are completely welcome to join you and us. In an effort to ensure a comfortable environment for all of our yacht club members and their guests, SPYC members accompanied by dogs are welcome to enjoy the downtown clubhouse on the Heritage Lounge outdoor patio in the designated “dog-friendly” zone.

At Pass-a-Grille, there is a similar location for our furry friends on the outdoor deck area. Members and guests are required to keep their dog on a leash, always maintain control and do not disturb other guests.

We are mindful of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which allows service animals. However, as a private club that is not open to the general public and in order to provide for our members with a disability, the Club will permit a service dog to accompany a member, provided the members register the

dog with the general manager or the membership director of the downtown Club or the manager of PAG confirming the dog is required due to a disability and stating the tasks the dog has been trained to perform.

Please visit the administrative offices of the downtown Club Tuesday through Saturday or PAG Thursday through Saturday between the hours of 11:30 am - 5:00 pm to complete the registration paperwork for your service dog. It will be noted on your account, so the servers know your dog is registered as a service dog.

TWILIGHT SERIES O

n September 7th another Twilight Series wrapped up with a very successful awards dinner.

By July, it seemed we were on our way to another great season with a possibility of twenty plus races. Then, another weather pattern developed and the last two months allowed only a handful of races. We managed to complete 17. Typically, 15 to 20 boats, with as many as six J70s, were out each Friday. Over 30 boats registered (to be eligible for scoring) and as many as 60 different boats came out to race at least once. It was great to see Mike Siedlecki get some new competition with Lon Ethington’s boat, a sister ship Martin 23. Grant Dumas continued to support our Club by encouraging sailors to compete on his boat. Daniel Dawson was presented with the “Nancy Ammon” award in recognition of his many successful efforts to grow our sailing/racing community.

A

fter focusing on our Opti sailors in the last article, it’s time to take a look at what our Laser Sailors were up to this past summer! With events across the US and Europe, our sailors were busy prepping for and competing in a number of big name events.

SPYC was well represented at the US Laser National Championships hosted by the Houston Yacht Club. Our top performers were Guthrie Braun and Ethan Danielson sailing in the Laser 4.7 finishing in 1st and 2nd overall. Emma Shakespeare and Heather Kerns also competed sailing in the highly competitive Laser Radial Fleet.

SPYC was also very well represented at the US Sailing Girls Single-handed Championship for the Leiter Cup at the Stamford Yacht Club in Connecticut. Our top finisher was Heather Kerns in 6th overall followed by Heidi Hicks in 13th and Emma Shakespeare in 16th.

SPYC Laser sailors Ethan Danielson and Guthrie Braun made the trip overseas to Poland to compete in the 375 boat Laser 4.7 World Championships. Annually this is one of the biggest laser events in the world. Our SPYC sailors showed with continued hard work they will soon be ready to compete at the top of the world stage! The SPYC Laser Team has a busy schedule this fall leading up to the Orange Bowl Regatta and the Laser National Championship in January. Chances are if you are on the waterfront downtown, you will see the team out fine-tuning their skills!

YACHTING INFORMATION

S Sailing is divided into eleven Distinct Areas. Our Club is located in “Area D” which includes Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, North and South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Edith Collins from Roswell, Georgia (our Area D Coordinator) tenure expires this month.

Our new “Area D” Coordinator is Sam Vasquez from Gulfport Yacht Club (GYA).

Our area has 4 Regional Sailing Associations- RSA the Gulf Yachting Association (GYA), South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association (SAYRA), Dixie Inland Yacht Racing Association (DIYRA) Florida Sailing Association (FSA). The RSA’s host an array of US Sailing Courses. US Sailing and the FSA will host a

47th Annual North American Invitational Cruiser Navigation RallY October 23-27, 2018 Volunteers needed as observers & scrutinizers on boats.

US Sailing Regional Symposium at SPYC on 12/1/2018. There is no fee for US Sailing members and $10 for non-members; lunch is included. The event is round table discussion for organizations to share ideas and concerns about sailing education and programming in the area - register with ussailing.org. *Heads up on the upcoming Florida Legislature – the Broward County legislature who tried to have a bill passed concerning youth under a certain age on the water (sail or power) may try to introduce the bill again. *Continue to monitor the water issues and do your part to keep all of our waters clean.

Nancy & Tim Snyder won the competitive Tartan 10 section of Chicago Yacht Club’s Race to Mackinac. Their boat Cheap Thrill prevailed over the 2nd place boat Meat in a match race that included 6 lead changes in the final 130 miles up the northern part of the course.

“Spectators” watched the race on YellowBrick tracking until its conclusion at 1:32 am Tuesday morning. Conditions were very rough on the first day, which resulted in over 50 boats withdrawing out of the 300+ boat racing fleet.

road Reacher’s Race Captain, Gwen Mann, met with her event committee and planned a very busy schedule for the upcoming year. We will be doing a lot racing, sailing for fun, and learning sailing tactics in preparation for next year’s Rainbow Regatta.

Our first big event will be the 47th Annual Commodore Lucas Invitational Ladies Pram Regatta. The Commodore Lucas Trophy was presented by Commodore John S. Lucas in 1972 to the Broad Reachers of the Pass-a-Grille Yacht Club to promote yacht racing between female sailing groups in the Tampa Bay area and to encourage proficiency in seamanship, good sportsmanship, and outstanding proficiency in the sport. The

Deed of Gift states that “Eligibility shall be by invitation to the selected organized women’s sailing groups.” This regatta consists of a round-robin series of five races held in Prams. Spencer Lucas will be on hand to present this year’s trophy to the winner.

We will be inviting two sailors each from nine other sailing clubs in the area. We have had up to 16 competitors sailing in this event!!! Should be exciting and a lot of fun!!

he Salty Sisters held their Annual Welcome Back Party on September 5th at “Gina’s Hideaway.” It was a gala event with many Salties dressed in Roaring Twenties attire.

Activities included flappers, libations, dancing, and “gambling.”

A fantastic jazz band from Gibbs High School came and played for us during lunch.

Nita George, aka Big Gus and General Manager of Gina’s Hideaway, introduced some of the bouncers that were on duty keeping everyone under control and making sure they knew the password to get in.

e look forward to seeing everyone back from summer travels. You’re invited to our spooky October program – Paranormal Investigation 101: Local Lore and Legends. Our speaker Dr. Brandy Stark, a St. Petersburg College faculty member, studies the liminal world. As an academic, with degrees in History & Classics, Religious Studies, Liberal Studies, and Humanities, came a new drive to study the paranormal. In 1997, she founded the SPIRITS of St. Petersburg, a group of local enthusiasts with whom she explores the lore, legend, and spirits of Pinellas County. Her outreach includes the Paranormal Pets podcast, participation in the World’s Largest Ghost Hunt, and numerous talks on ghosts throughout the area.

Her passion for these subjects is what inspires her as an artist; her works often manifesting as ancient characters, legends, deities and more. What has she learned in over two decades of research based in the supernatural? Join us to find out which stories are legend, lore, and what areas are haunted!

eptember and October found our Riders Club members traveling far and wide. Norm sent this great photo from the Harley Store he visited in Banff, Canada. It looks like they have created a great way to ride a Harley during the winter months.

We are looking forward to welcoming Norm back this month; we have missed riding with him. Ted Henter’s travels have included Baltimore and Panama and we are also anticipating his return very soon. Bart Franey traveled to Maine where he again rented a motorcycle. The Riders Club could not be more pleased with how Bart has embraced his new hobby and cannot wait to see which motorcycle wins his final approval.

Bob Kline checked in from Northern California, wishing he had been able to take his bike. The scenery was gorgeous and just calling for a motorcycle ride. Douglas and Michele traveled to

Edinburgh Scotland for a week and Wayne traveled to North Carolina. Wayne is busy planning new rides to Sebring, and Homosassa, where we will stop at MacRae’s which features a motel, Tiki Hut Bar with food service, and a fish market with gift/bait shop. This hidden gem is off the beaten path and a wonderful ride for our Club.

he Golf Group suffers summer flight for several months in the heat of summer. Because of this, we do not schedule golf in July/August. However, each August we run over to Top Golf in Tampa for a fun day of camaraderie with golf shots, food, and drink. There are 45 Top Golfs in North America. TG is really an entertainment center with 102 tee boxes on three levels, all with tables and wait staff. The object is to hit computer specified targets.

ur August Ad-hoc cruise was supposed to be to Bird Key Yacht Club. It’s not often we have to cancel a cruise, but weather and safety override our desire to get together and the cruise was cancelled due to red tide. We still want to thank our Port Directors Rob & Michele Matthes for all the work coordinating, and then helping make this difficult decision (and saving us some bucks too!).

FLYING CLUB

A

s the summer winds down, we are back to our regular scheduled meetings and will hopefully have an entertaining, and useful, schedule for existing and new members. Our September meeting brought a special guest, Viktor Romenenko former Soviet Cosmonaut, who talked of his early days flying soviet fighter jets during the cold war; which he admitted were very fast but a handful right up to his space training, making flights in both Vostok and Soyuz craft. He retired before the full association was

in place with NASA, but said he had always wanted to visit the International Space Station. Highlight of his talk was an original Soviet spacesuit. Much amusement was had seeing one of our members (no names mentioned) trying to get into it. Victor admitted that most soviet cosmonauts were chosen partially for their size, with limited room in a Soyuz.

The summer included a few fly-ins and one member had the chance to attend the June AOPA fly-in at Missoula, MT. This event follows the usual format, with multiple static displays of aircraft from light sport up to WWII warbirds and heavies.

The fly-ins attract planes and pilots from all over the country, and for some it was a “right of passage” making a 2,000+ mile journey in a GA aircraft. This fall we have fly-ins in Bushnell (if you like grass strips) and The DeLand Sport Aviation Showcase…see you there! Next meeting will be Sunday, Oct. 14th at 6:00 pm (exact location TBA). his past Friday, the Wing Shooters travelled to Tampa Bay Sporting Clays. After so much rain, several areas were closed and we drove over water covered dirt roads to get the job done. Several carts bogged done in the mud and had to be pushed out. Yuck!
