CHAPTER ONE 2
COMMODORE’S LOG H
appy new fiscal year! We have a new budget, new Executive Committee, new Board members, and new Club Officers. We also have the traditions and wisdom of those that served before us which will enable us to continue the successes of this Club we all love. I consider it both an honor and a privilege to follow in the footsteps of now Past Commodore, Jim Byrne. Jim has masterfully provided the direction and leadership to advance the mission of our Club. I would like to thank Jim and Jennifer for the hundreds of hours they have given to our Club. I sure hope Jim doesn’t send us a bill. Please congratulate and thank Jim (and Jennifer) on his leadership when you see him. I am pleased to announce the results of our Annual Election and First Meeting of the new Board: 2019 - 2020 OFFICERS • Vice Commodore, David Mendelblatt • Rear Commodore, William “Bill” Waters, Sr. • Treasurer, Brian Smith • Secretary, Wendy Reuss-Stocke 2019 - 2020 BOARD OF DIRECTORS • Grant Dumas • Christopher Fraser • Veronica Hickey • George Pennington • Jeannie O’Grady Congratulations to our new Officers and Directors, and thank you to everyone that ran. The slate of candidates this year was very strong. If you did not get elected this year, I encourage you to run again next year. For those of you that were not able to make it to the Annual Meeting, the annual report on the Club was very good. We met all of our financial goals, we exceeded our budget for new members and we fully funded all of our capital reserves.
The best part of the entire meeting was seeing the expressions on the faces of our Junior Sailors when they received a standing ovation. I sure miss the days of loading up my son’s boat and traveling to Youth Regattas. Congratulations to our Officers, Directors, and Club Preparing for a Youth Regatta Management on a great year! November and December are very exciting months at SPYC. Here are a few events you may want to place on your calendar: • Blessing of the Fleet & Jazz Brunch- Nov. 3rd • 18th Annual Vintage Motor Classic- Nov. 10th • Commodore’s Mad Hatter’s Ball- Nov. 16th • Gingerbread House Decorating- Nov. 30th • Thanksgiving at Downtown & Pass-a-Grille - Nov. 28th • 20th Annual Christmas Boutique- Dec. 3rd • Annual Lighting of the Yachts- Dec. 14th • Children’s Christmas Party & Brunch- Dec. 15th • New Year’s Eve at SPYC- Dec. 31st PLEASE DON’T FORGET TO VOTE YES ON NOVEMBER 5TH. The Sailing Center Referendum is very important to the Club. The referendum would allow the City of St. Petersburg to give us a 20 year lease. Our current lease is only 5 years. We want it, the City wants it, and it is good for the community. We just need to vote. You can find more details at the front desk of the Club. I look forward to having another great year. Happy Thanksgiving!
Commodore Michael Blacker

JUNIOR SAILING by Todd Fedszyn
T
he SPYC Junior Sailing Team has a busy start to the 2019/2020 sailing with sailors competing in the Bahamas, Mississippi, and everywhere in between. With an active team of new Green Fleet sailors, and our constantly growing Opti RWB and laser Team, we are looking forward to another great year. SPYC sailors Bella Shakespeare and Dorothy Mendelblatt both qualified to represent the USA at the Opti North American Championship based on their great performances at the USODA Team Trials earlier this year. Sailing in a tough fleet of international sailors, both sailors showed they will be at the top of their fleets for years to come.
The SPYC Laser Team made the trek to Pass Christian, Mississippi to compete in the Laser Gulf Coast Championships. Although the fleet was small, it was packed with top talent from many of the best teams in the South. Guthrie Braun was our top performer in 3rd overall and was closely followed by Ethan Danielson in 4th. Heather Kerns finished in 7th overall was 2nd female and Emily Allen finished 10th and was 3rd female. The Laser Team was once again well represented at the SAISA HS Cressy Qualifier hosted this year by Ransom Everglades School in Miami. 50 radials competed in 15 races over 2 days looking to qualify for the High School Singlehanded National Championship. Guthrie Braun was our top finisher in 4th place overall, followed by Ethan Danielson in 9th, Heather Kerns in 10th and 1st female. Other notable performances were Heidi Hicks in 13th and 2nd female, Emily Allen 18th and 4th female, Preston Weaver 19th and first freshman, and Emma Shakespeare 20th and 5th female.

s they sometimes say, some things must come to an end as one door closes and another opens. After five fulfilling years as your Fleet Captain, this is my last Cruising Fleet article as it’s time for a change. What an enjoyable time it has been meeting new friends, having some incredible experiences and creating lasting memories. I hope you will join us at our November 14th meeting when we will have a “passing of the flag” as I transition duties to your new incoming Fleet Captain, Willy Bain. For me and my husband Brian, it’s not the end, but a new beginning as we turn the page for the next chapter, and journey with new and exciting experiences on land instead of the water. We might even meet-up with the Cruising Fleet for some “surf and turf” combined events (more on that later). Meanwhile, here’s the rest of the update on the Cruising Fleet:

In September, the Fleet went to Twin Dolphin Marina (9/27-9/29) with activities for the weekend arranged by our Port Directors Camille Iurillo & Joe Petrella. After arriving Friday, the group had a cookout September Port Directors – Camille near the pool and enjoyed Iurillo and Joe Petrella the evening. Saturday some strolled around town before meeting for dinner that evening at Pier 22 in our own private room. What a great weekend thanks to Joe & Camille, and all who came by boat or iron dinghy!
Upcoming events for the Cruising Fleet to enjoy include: Cruising Fleet Program Meeting – Thu, Nov 14 (5:30 social, 6:30 dinner, program to follow) Blessing of the Fleet – Sunday, Nov 3 “Flash” cruise to Field Club – Nov 8-10 Cruising Fleet Tables at the Jazz Brunch (11/3) and Commodore’s Ball (11/16) December Annual Holiday & Awards Dinner – Friday Dec 13 Lighting of the Yachts – Saturday, Dec 14
Special Reminder: All SPYC members are encouraged to join us for our annual Blessing of the Fleet on Sunday, November 3rd. Bring your boat to receive a blessing, accompanied by our incoming Flag Officers and Fleet Captain. Be a part of this historic Club tradition! Details and sign-up available through e-news and the website. Mark your calendars and join us for our special November 14th Dinner Program Meeting when we “pass the flag” to the new Fleet Captain. Our special guest speaker is awardwinning author Robert N. Macomber speaking on “Yachts That Went To War”. We will also begin sign-up for our January Cruise to our own SPYC (1-17-1/19) at this time. November Program - Honor Series Author Robert N. Macomber

rom cruising yachts to motor yachts (they could be the same thing), it’s a popular transition from the water to the land (or vice versa). And so it goes, we started up our new SPYC RV group in October with a great turnout to our first meeting! I didn’t know there were so many Happy Campers at our Club! After getting logistics out of the way, such as meeting dates, we got down to business with idea generating and information sharing.
Larry and Joy Wissing will share their Alaska Adventure with us, not just a picture show but a real account of what to expect and how to handle the gorgeous wilderness. Being from Florida, part of the adventure is getting to and from Alaska. shooting places, we have lots of choices on the way home. One of our shooting venues is Tenoroc near Lakeland. The property was once a mining site for the Coronet Phospate Co. According to myth the land was polluted and donated to Polk County in lieu of a massive cleanup. Notice Tenoroc is a semordnilap, it’s Coronet spelled backwards. I don’t believe the pollution story; lots of lakes, no fishing restrictions and wild hogs are plentiful. Those hogs eat everything. As far as shooting goes, Tenoroc is tough and can be embarrassing to anyone bragging about their shooting skills. However, knowing you’ll be dining afterwards at Harry’s is enough to override an exposure of your true shooting skill. Harry’s Seafood Bar and Grille sits on that beautiful square in Lakeland and is a great place to forget about all those missed targets. Back to Lightning and his skill level…. he’s deadly with a shotgun, he’s from Kentucky.

ur Riders were overjoyed to see the daily rain end, so they dusted off their motorcycles to meet for a lunch ride in St. Petersburg at El Maguey’s Mexican Restaurant. This is a favorite local lunch ride for our club. We always enjoy El Maguey’s authentic Mexican fare, at great prices. We are planning another overnight ride (actually a week ride) which will take us to the Carolina’s this time. Cherohala Skyway is a 43 mile scenic Byway that connects Tellico Plains, Tennessee to Robbinsville, North Carolina, and passes through two national forests. The Cherohala Skyway opened in 1996 after 34 years of construction. We may stretch out this trip to include a day or two to tackle the Rattler and the Dragon.

Ray and Charlotte should be heading back to Florida soon and our Riders look forward to welcoming them back and enjoying a ride together. Norm has returned from some summer travels and is looking forward to a ride. Bob is currently traveling and our Riders will miss riding with him over the next several months.
