Message from LEADERSHIP What an honour to look back on a year defined by innovation, achievement, and compassion right across the Foundation. As we reflect on the many accomplishments, one word comes to mind: celebration. Truly, this year’s highlight reel is one to celebrate. Providence Health Care (PHC) launched a compassionate new approach to elder care. We supported a ground-breaking new clinic at St. Paul’s for people with mental health and substance use challenges. PHC became a founding member of Canada’s Digital Technology Supercluster. And that’s not all. Here are a few more of our most inspiring milestones: Unprecedented generosity. We received one of the largest private donations in Canadian history with Jim Pattison’s transformative $75 million gift to the Foundation. His donation will literally lay

the foundation for the new St. Paul’s within the Jim Pattison Medical Centre. Noteworthy alliances. We marked the first year since the amalgamation of St. Paul’s Foundation and Tapestry Foundation. It is a privilege to raise funds for enhanced patient care, capital projects, equipment needs, research, teaching and innovation to improve the care of patients across all Providence Health Care hospitals and residences in British Columbia. Annual traditions. In November, we celebrated the 20th anniversary of St. Paul’s inspiring Lights of Hope campaign. Thanks to you, we raised $3.1 million to support the greatest needs of our patients, residents, and caregivers. Not long after that, we hosted Feast of Fortune to welcome the Lunar New Year. And again, your generosity helped us raise more than $900,000 to purchase an

ultra-high-tech mammography machine for the Providence Breast Centre at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital (MSJ). New beginnings. We are delighted to welcome Fiona Dalton, the new President & CEO of PHC. Fiona brings us almost 25 years experience leading complex, publicly-funded health care organizations, notably with the UK’s National Health Service. Fond farewells. We bid a very fond farewell to Dianne Doyle, who began a well-earned retirement after 12 years as PHC’s President & CEO. Dianne was a tireless advocate for improving the hospital’s aging infrastructure and she leaves us having set the stage for a

brand new St. Paul’s. Thank you, Dianne: you inspired us with your leadership and guidance. Extraordinary donors. Everything you see in this report is a celebration of our donors’ generosity, and the crucial role you have played in our many achievements. Together, we are building the future of health care and that’s yet another reason to celebrate. Thank you.

Celebrate CHANGEMAKERS In March 2017, our Foundation celebrated an incredible act of generosity: a $75 million donation from Jim Pattison. His gift will help build the Jim Pattison Medical Centre, home of the new St. Paul’s Hospital: a world-class health campus to be built just three kilometres from our original building on Burrard. The new St. Paul’s represents a unique opportunity to help transform health care for the people of British Columbia. It will be a catalyst to drive innovation and excellence. And it will fundamentally shift the way health care services are experienced by patients, staff, and the wider community. Perhaps best of all, the new St. Paul’s will open its doors building on a 125-year history of delivering integrated, patient-centred, compassionate care.

6  |  ANNUAL REPORT  |  2017 - 2018

How very fitting that Jim Pattison’s name— synonymous with philanthropy, innovation, and community engagement—will anchor the new St. Paul’s.

Jim Pattison’s gift is a watershed for the new St. Paul’s and for all British Columbians. And we are profoundly grateful for it. Every gift makes a difference. Your gift makes a difference. We couldn’t do what we do without donors like you.

Celebrate SENIORS There’s a reason so many Christmas carols are about getting home, or being at home, for the holidays. It’s because home is our comfort. It’s our haven. It’s where we gather to celebrate our milestones with family and friends. But what if you live in residential care? How do you build a home and create a sense of comfort and community in a medical setting? That’s the question Carrie Willekes, Resident Care Manager at MSJ, set out to answer. After countless interviews with residents, families, and staff, it turned out that the way to make residential sites feel like a home, is to make them function like a home. Willekes says, “Think about all of the things that make your home welcoming and comfortable: food, celebrations, family, friends, dignity, being engaged in your care and decision-making. These are the same things our residents and their families want.”

It’s a simple but profound insight, and it’s transforming elder care at PHC. Gone is the institutional model that prioritized routine and structure. In its place, we are crafting a social model that more closely resembles the life our residents had in their family homes. “We don’t even call it ‘elder care.’ We call it living,” says Willekes. Your donations to St. Paul’s Foundation do so much for so many. We hope you are as gratified as we are to know that your support is building communities that seniors (and future seniors!) will genuinely want to call home. Read more about the work of Carrie and other seniors & residential care staff at helpstpauls.com/seniors.

Celebrate COLLABORATION St. Paul’s Foundation was thrilled to pick up the threads initially woven by Tapestry Foundation to celebrate the 11th annual Scotiabank Feast of Fortune: our annual fundraising gala in support of vital equipment at MSJ. Although this was our Foundation’s first time hosting the event, Scotiabank Feast of Fortune has a wonderful history and donors like you have helped raise almost $5 million. This year, more than 600 business leaders, community ambassadors, and philanthropists from Vancouver’s diverse community gathered to welcome the Year of the Dog. And in keeping with the dog, a character symbolizing loyalty and kindness, your support helped us raise $900,115 for a state-of-the-art mammography machine for MSJ. Last year, more than 15,000 breast images were taken at MSJ. It is interesting (and more than a little heartwarming) to note that the new

8  |  ANNUAL REPORT  |  2017 - 2018

machine replaces one purchased in 2008 with funds raised at the very first Scotiabank Feast of Fortune. Staff and patients alike are excited about this revolutionary new screening tool. It allows for better cancer detection by using an advanced form of mammography called “tomosynthesis.” This creates a 3-D image of the breast and enables doctors to see through denser tissue which can help detect breast cancer earlier, while it is most treatable. Thank you to all committee members, guests, donors, sponsors, and auction contributors for your generous support of the event, Mount Saint Joseph Hospital, and St. Paul’s Foundation. Thanks to you, we can ensure that patients continue to receive the best care, with the best tools, for the next ten years and beyond.

Celebrate COMMUNITY

Star light. Star bright. First star I see tonight. There’s a reason we wish on the first star in the night sky: because it twinkles with light and hope. Then, almost before you know it, that first star becomes part of a blanket of stars that fills the night sky with lights of hope. Similarly, at the darkest time of year, Lights of Hope illuminates Vancouver’s Burrard Street corridor and transforms the façade of St. Paul’s Hospital into a beacon of light and joy. Thanks to you, this spectacular showcase is more than just a beloved holiday tradition: it’s one of our Foundation’s most enduring and meaningful fundraising campaigns. And this year was no exception. On November 16th, we gathered with you outside St. Paul’s Hospital to celebrate the 20th annual Lights of Hope. We lit the night sky in support of our patient’s greatest needs and together we raised $3.1 million.

When you give to Lights of Hope, your gift goes wherever the need is most acute. It could be urgently-needed equipment, or funding for a community program that provides outreach and connection, or an innovative teaching initiative that would not otherwise get off the ground. Ultimately, Lights of Hope is a beautiful reminder of the life-changing work being done at St. Paul’s and at all PHC sites. And it’s a touchstone that clearly resonates with our entire community: since 1998, we’ve raised more than $34 million. On behalf of St. Paul’s Foundation, PHC, and the tens of thousands of patients, residents, and caregivers who benefit from your support, thank you for inspiring hope.

Celebrate HEALING Each year, the Teck Emergency Centre at St. Paul’s sees almost 12,000 patients with mental-health and substance-use issues. That’s not only more than half of St. Paul’s overall emergency department (ED) cases, that’s more than any other ED in the province. Something needed to be done to ensure we are providing the necessary and specialized care and support for our patients, while taking the pressure off the already-crowded ED. The HUB’s wraparound model of care is the result. It’s a unique and collaborative emergency treatment model, complemented by substanceuse treatment and transitional support, specifically designed to meet the needs of St. Paul’s most vulnerable patients with culturally appropriate, trauma-informed care. The model of care emphasizes a team-based approach. Through the different programs, patients can access physicians and nurses specializing in addiction medicine, social workers, “peer navigators” who have “ recovered from substance use, and Indigenous healing partners. In addition to its specialized multi-disciplinary team, the HUB model of care unites emergency care, rapid access to treatment, and a transition centre to provide support and resources for the return into the community. Patients are assessed in specialized settings separate from the ED. They receive the treatment they need. When they are ready to transition back to their communities, St. Paul’s will work closely with community

10  |  ANNUAL REPORT  |  2017 - 2018

Artist Jerry Whitehead and his mural inside the HUB at St. Paul’s.

mental-health and substance-use services and housing providers. Ultimately, the hope is that HUB will help slow the “revolving door” of crisis response and help smooth the transition from acute care to community services. HUB is a celebration of healing, compassion, and reconciliation. It’s a concrete and hopeful response to Vancouver’s opioid crisis and a testament to the power of collaboration. HUB was made possible through support from the Ministry of Health, Providence Health Care, the Vancouver Police Department and Vancouver Police Foundation, the City of Vancouver, St. Paul’s Foundation, PHC Office of Innovation and Strategic Partnerships, Vancouver Coastal Health, Weatherhaven Global Resources Ltd., and, of course, donors like you.

Celebrate INNOVATION Imagine a future in which the treatments for diseases like cancer, diabetes, and even depression are customized to work specifically for you. A future in which getting a kidney—or donating one—isn’t much more disruptive than having your tonsils out. A future in which your own genes can prevent you from getting sick in the first place. In February, those futuristic visions took a giant leap forward with the creation of Canada’s Digital Technology Supercluster. BC has the fastest-growing tech sector in Canada, and this Supercluster brings together more than 200 organizations—including PHC (supported by St. Paul’s Foundation)—that will, among other things, help transform the delivery of health care as we know it. In all, the federal government announced five superclusters in five different areas of strength seeded across Canada. Given that BC has the fastest-growing tech sector in Canada, our Supercluster is strategically positioned for a number of ambitious and exciting projects. After all, data is a building block of the 21st century. And there’s no part of our lives that won’t be touched by it, including and most fundamentally, our wellbeing.

Phase one of our Supercluster will include creating an infrastructure to support a secure database of genomic information. Scientists and researchers will use this to develop advanced cancer treatments through personalized onco-genomics. Big data will also be harnessed to create individuallytailored therapies for other conditions. And a digital platform will be launched to help Canadians themselves better manage their own health care. Leaders in their respective sectors of industry and academia are partnering with PHC to realize precision health goals. Of course, one of the most important partners is you. As a supporter of St. Paul’s Foundation, you are a vital part of this exciting initiative. The future is happening right here, right now. We are so grateful that you’re a part of it. Learn more about St. Paul’s role in the Digital Technology Supercluster at helpstpauls.com/supercluster.

Celebrate TEAMWORK At PHC, teamwork is among the most important components in patient care. From maternity, to anesthesiology, to emergency medicine: concise, accurate communication is the key to collaborating across disciplines. That is perhaps never more critical than during a tense, stressful medical emergency. Enter the Simulation Program. Simulations allow participants to practice complex medical procedures and to learn how to communicate more effectively during an emergency. Physicians and students alike agree that “nothing comes close” to the hands-on benefits of medical simulations. St. Paul’s has well-established simulation programs in the ICU, at the Heart Centre, the Teck Emergency Centre, and in the Maternity and Anesthesiology Departments. And now, thanks to your support, PHC is launching a new, unified Simulation Program to serve the entire PHC network. Teams from every site will be able to collaborate and discover new

12  |  ANNUAL REPORT  |  2017 - 2018

and better ways of handling crisis situations. With this training, our medical professionals will feel confident and empowered when a real emergency occurs. The importance of teamwork isn’t limited to the staff and physicians at PHC. It includes our donors and volunteers, too. It’s true! Think about any team sport: Each player has a different, but important, role. When everyone works together, the team is more successful. Our team is more successful because of your support; the success of the Simulation Program is just one example of that. In sports, in medicine, in life: teamwork enables us to reach higher, go further, and achieve more than we could on our own. Thank you for being such a valuable member of our team. Learn more about PHC’s simulation programs at helpstpauls.com/simulation.

Your gifts make a difference in the lives of our residents, patients, and caregivers at all of our health care sites, such as Mrs. Li Tak at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital’s extended care unit.
