2020 - 2021 GRATITUDE REPORT | 4
MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP Welcome to our 2020-2021 Gratitude Report: your support was unflagging and instrumental in achieving so many milestones. Here are some highlights. Pandemic response. With the majority of our staff working from home, our ever-resourceful team engaged with you virtually. We shared our signature events online including Lights of Hope, Scotiabank Feast of Fortune, and our Health Innovation Series. The Foundation also became an “operations centre,” managing the flood of in-kind donations for our frontline workers that poured in from across the community. Construction kickoff. In March, we celebrated the start of construction of the new St. Paul’s Hospital. Following public health guidelines, we gathered with lead donor Jim Pattison and held a small but meaningful event at the Station Street site to mark the historic day. Construction begins. From L-R: Eric Harris, Chair, Board of Directors, Providence Health Care; Paul Hollands, Chair, Campaign Executive Committee, St. Paul’s Foundation; Fiona Dalton, President & CEO, Providence Health Care; Jim Pattison, Lead Donor; Dr. Sean Virani, Physician Program Director, St. Paul’s Heart Centre, and Head, St. Paul’s Division of Cardiology; John Montalbano, Chair, Board of Directors, St. Paul’s Foundation; and Dick Vollet, President & CEO, St. Paul’s Foundation
To the new St. Paul’s and beyond. Thanks to you, we reached our $225 million goal for the new St. Paul’s Hospital a year ahead of schedule! And we’re just getting started. There are a number of significant capital projects coming to the Jim Pattison Medical Centre including
5 | 2020 - 2021 GRATITUDE REPORT
our $50 million Clinical Support and Research Centre (CSRC). This massive 750,000-square-foot facility (the current St. Paul’s Hospital is 300,000 square feet!) will house the majority of St. Paul’s world-leading research programs. And it will bring about opportunities for discovery, collaboration, and innovation like never before. Truly a home sweet home. Another transformative capital project on the horizon is our commitment to Providence Living to create a holistic new model for publiclyfunded long-term care. Planning is already well underway for The Views in Comox and will continue with the St. Vincent’s Heather redevelopment in Vancouver. Indigenous wellness and reconciliation. Providence Health Care and St. Paul’s Foundation remain committed to the process of Truth and Reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples across BC. We are embedding reconciliation into everything we do.
Dick Vollet
Your abiding support. The pandemic has changed the way we work, the way we care for patients and residents, and the things we deem most important in our lives. In this year of flux, we are grateful for your continued support of the Foundation and the people we serve. We are humbled by your trust and generosity. Thank you.

Many of us remember the days when neighbours would rally around if someone in the community got sick or needed help. Often that meant leaving covered BLM casserole dishes on the doorstep. And so, as our teams stood firm on OUTREACH the frontlines, GRITyou came forward to help in this most compassionate way with countless meals, snacks, and INCLUSION coffee cards. HOPE AT HOME Last year’s Lights of Hope introduced Hope at Home lanterns. They brought light and joy to homes across BC while supporting our greatest needs across Providence. It was so successful, we’re doing it again this year! David Oliver, from Cranbrook, BC, purchased lanterns for his entire family as a “thank you” for the care his late wife received. “St. Paul’s gave Irma and me the priceless gift of four extra, active years together. These lanterns are a wonderful reminder that St. Paul’s SUPPORT helps families like ours every single day.”

A kidney transplant is one of St. Paul’s most life-changing surgeries, especially if the new kidney comes from a living donor. AMAZING GRACE One of the pandemic’s most heartrending lessons is the vulnerability of seniors, especially those living in long-term care. Your gifts gave our residents a vital link to the outside world. iPads became a gateway to family, friends, concerts, and religious services. Big screen TVs allowed for virtual visits from our dedicated volunteers. At Mount Saint Joseph Hospital, Fanny hosted weekly newspaper-reading sessions for our residents. When it became clear that her Cantonese-speaking audience was mostly interested in the flyers, restaurant specials, and recipes, the sessions morphed into joyful conversations about food, family, and memories.

When the pandemic threatened to delay essential breast surgeries, Providence Breast Centre (PBC) fast-tracked a technique that doesn’t require general anesthesia. PLANTING TREES UNDER WHICH WE WILL NOT SIT Our patients, families, and caregivers trust me to share the stories of their care. This year, I have been especially moved by their words – and by the courage of our frontline workers, the resilience of our community, and the incredible impact of your donations. This has inspired my husband, Andy Ali, and I to make a legacy gift to the Foundation in our wills. We’re not old (well, not that old) and we’re definitely not rich. But one day (hopefully many years from now!), our donation will stand as a meaningful tribute to the things that matter most: tread lightly, give back, make a difference. Kris Wallace, Writing Specialist, St. Paul’s Foundation
Legacy donors Andy Ali and Kris Wallace with their daughter Piper.
