2019 - 2020 GRATITUDE REPORT

2 | 2019 - 2020 GRATITUDE REPORT

It’s all because of you. Your generosity. Your compassion. Your support.

Thank you!

Message from Leadership Welcome to our first-ever Gratitude Report. Similar to an annual report, except it’s all about you. This is our heartfelt thank you and our chance to share the incredible impact of your generosity. Here are a few of the year’s highlights. Pandemic Response. St. Paul’s Foundation was just weeks away from wrapping up the most successful year in our history. Then the pandemic hit. Despite the fear and uncertainty, our donors, our communities, and our staff stepped up. Way up. PHC’s 8,000-strong medical and support teams stood firm on the frontlines every single day with inspiring professionalism and compassion. Foundation employees jumped into new roles to support PHC staff. And our donors came forward – oh, how you came forward – to help in unprecedented ways. Read about how you led the charge in the fight against COVID-19 on page 6. Capital Campaign. The Capital Campaign in support of the new St. Paul’s has been a standout achievement this year: we are more than 90% of the way to achieving our $225 million goal! We are grateful to a mighty group of community leaders and visionaries including: Michael and Carmelina De Lazzari’s $3 million gift to create the De Lazzari Family Chair in Heart Lung Innovation; Scotiabank’s $2 million in support of youth transition programs; a promise to raise $6 million from the Rotary Club of Vancouver Hearing Foundation; and a $2 million gift from the Bank of Montreal to strengthen our commitment to Indigenous health and wellness. We are especially proud of a collective gift from all 14 of St. Paul’s own radiologists. Together, they have pledged $1 million to transform the future of health care at the new St. Paul’s. Research Excellence. The new St. Paul’s at the Jim Pattison Medical Centre includes a multi-million dollar research and innovation facility. With it, we are poised to become part of a globally-recognized R&D ecosystem (like Silicon Valley, but for health sciences) with a BC government recommendation for the new St. Paul’s to be the cornerstone of an innovation precinct in the False Creek Flats neighbourhood. This will put us at the very centre of health research and discovery: a catalyst to attract and enable investment and growth of BC companies in life sciences, bio-technology, IT, AR/VR, and digital health.

Research Leadership. This is a game-changing project that needs strong leadership and a big vision. That’s why we were so pleased to join PHC in welcoming acclaimed research scientist Dr. Darryl Knight as PHC’s new vice-president of Research & Academic Affairs and president of the Providence Health Care Research Institute (PHCRI). New St. Paul’s. The new St. Paul’s redevelopment team is hard at work designing all aspects of the new campus, and deploying donor gifts into specific areas of care including surgery, imaging, renal, emergency, heart, lung, healthy aging, and our world-class research and innovation hub. You heard it here first: although we don’t have an exact date yet, plans are already in motion for a ground-breaking ceremony before the end of 2020. New Model of Seniors Care. We already knew – and the pandemic confirmed – that we need a whole new approach to elder care. That’s why the Foundation and Providence Living (a new nonprofit health care organization established by PHC focused on seniors and long-term care) are redoubling our efforts to build Canada’s first publicly-funded dementia villages, first in Comox, then Vancouver.

Dick Vollet

Deep and Abiding Gratitude. Your gifts have made a profound and lasting difference this year. We are both proud and humbled by your support – especially during these uncertain times. If this virus has touched your life or the life of a loved one, please take care and be kind to yourself. And know that we have never been more grateful for your continuing faith in our mission. Thank you,

Dick Vollet President and CEO, St. Paul’s Foundation

John Montalbano Board Chair, St. Paul’s Foundation

Our COVID-19 response Thanks to you, teams at St. Paul’s, Mount Saint Joseph Hospital, and our long-term care homes had the tools, equipment, comfort, and support they needed to do what they do best: care for patients and residents. Community outpouring. Individual donors, companies both large and small, hotels, restaurants, ride shares, Girl Guides … our neighbours across Vancouver and beyond reached out with unprecedented generosity. Donations-in-kind included meals and snacks, accommodation, transportation, even comfortable furniture (break rooms in the old St. Paul’s buildings weren’t exactly comfortable (or restorative), the list goes on and on. To keep up with your generosity, the Foundation redeployed 20% of our staff to PHC to assist with COVID-19 preparedness and to distribute all of your wonderful gifts to our frontline workers. Thanks to this collective effort, staff across PHC’s hospitals and long-term care homes had nourishing meals, safe rides to work, hotel rooms to shower and rest in between shifts or before driving home, and well-equipped break rooms to relax and refresh.

6 | 2019 - 2020 GRATITUDE REPORT

You helped us provide compassionate care for our patients and speed up life-saving research.

Foundation initiatives. Donors large and small also wanted to give money. So we launched our COVID-19 Response Fund with a focus on three critical areas: research and innovation, acute care, and seniors and long-term care. Generous matching gifts from the Conconi Family and Y.P. Heung Foundations, and donors like you, helped raise over $1.7 million to support COVID-19 Response Fund at St. Paul’s Foundation. Gifts to this fund made a huge difference in acute care during the initial wave, and will continue to safeguard our community going forward. Your donations have funded life-saving research, rapid and widespread testing, the acceleration of virtual health measures, enhanced infection control, and PPE. On the research front, as scientists worldwide race to develop a vaccine, “made-at-St-Paul’s” initiatives include developing faster tests; looking for ways to block the virus from entering the body; examining existing drugs as possible treatments; and setting up a patient registry and biobank to better understand severe postinfection complications.

You brightened the spirits of our health care workers with donations of meals, hand-made cards, and of course, daily cheers.

Within our long-term care homes, your gifts have truly taken compassion to the next level. You’ve helped purchase iPads so residents can stay in touch with family; build viewing platforms outside our homes so residents in wheelchairs can see their visitors; and nurture our residents’ physical, mental, and spiritual well-being with things like art, music, and pet therapy and activities and outreach that put the “sweet” in home sweet home. Truly, we have never been more grateful for your generosity, for your dedicated and ongoing support of our patients and seniors, and for your continuing faith in our mission. Thank you.

Every gift makes a difference! Whether you gave $2 and boosted the glow of the Living Light – an interactive art piece at our Lights of Hope display – or $2 million to fund critically needed equipment, you have contributed to compassionate care and improved our patients’ and residents’ quality of life. By supporting PHC’s greatest needs, you’ve given young people at Foundry-Granville a safe place to get the mental health help they need. Patients in the cardiac surgery ward, who come from all over BC and Yukon, can stay connected to their loved ones using iPads. Patients who are hard of hearing can access pocket talkers to amplify the sound of their caregivers’ voices.

In 2019, Lights of Hope at St. Paul’s was celebrated across Vancouver at other PHC hospitals and care homes and at landmarks including TELUS World of Science, BC Place Stadium, Vancouver Convention Centre, TELUS Garden, and along Davie Street.

And you made innovation come to life! This year we launched Canada’s first dedicated cardiac CT scanner, leading to more specific diagnoses and life-saving early intervention.

8 | 2019 - 2020 GRATITUDE REPORT

You helped the Indigenous Health and Wellness program purchase traditional healing supplies for the All Nations Sacred Space. Pictured here are Indigenous health workers Rose McDonald, Anishinaabe; and Lavita Trimble, Nisga’a.

A MAN’S NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCE RESULTS IN A $1 MILLION GIFT TOWARDS LIFE-SAVING EQUIPMENT Dr. Chris Dawkins had just finished a home workout when he suddenly suffered a heart attack. If it weren’t for a first-in-Canada protocol between B.C. Ambulance Service and St. Paul’s, he would have died. Following instructions from a 911 dispatcher, his wife kept him alive until the paramedics arrived. Paramedics strapped on a LUCAS chest compression machine that kept Dawkins’ blood flowing for 52 minutes until he could be hooked up to an ECMO heart/lung bypass machine for surgery at St. Paul’s. There, cardiologists performed an angiogram to remove the blockage to his heart. After this story appeared in the Vancouver Sun, an anonymous donor ensured even more lives would be saved, donating $1 million to purchase three ECMO machines, seven LUCAS systems, and other equipment. “This is so inspiring - someone affected by the story of a life being saved,” said Dr. Dan Kalla, director of emergency medicine at St. Paul’s.

ED physician Dr. Brian Grunau, cardiac surgeon Dr. Jamil Bashir, perfusionist Amy Chu, patient Dr. Chris Dawkins, paramedic Tom Watson, BCEHS call taker Anne-Marie Forrest, and paramedic Ben Johnson with the LUCAS device.

Together we can make a big difference in women’s lives. - Lucia

Big need, big impact Over six weeks, Lucia received a breast cancer diagnosis and had a double mastectomy. To help women like Lucia, donors at our 13th annual Scotiabank Feast of Fortune gala funded a portable SPY-PHI imaging system for the Providence Breast Centre at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital. The SPY-PHI system allows surgeons to visualize blood flow in invasive operations like breast reconstructions, helping them better make critical surgical decisions in real time.

Transforming lives through transplants You’re helping us lead the way in kidney and heart transplants.

A MARATHON OF HEART TRANSPLANTS Dr. Anson Cheung made provincial history in August 2019, preforming four successful heart transplants in a row over the course of 60 hours. New heart recipient, Prem Sagar, was grateful to Dr. Cheung and his donor, saying, “I was just born again.” St. Paul’s is the only facility in BC performing adult heart transplants.

Dr. Anson Cheung, St. Paul’s heart surgeon, and surgical director, Cardiac Transplant Program of BC.

Dr. Mustafa Toma, medical director of the heart transplant program, says incredible teamwork is critical: “There is no way that we could continue to increase our volume of transplantation, while improving outcomes, without the dedication of members of the transplant teams in BC.”

CELEBRATING TRANSPLANT MILESTONES Organ donors give hope to thousands of people with endstage organ failure. In 2019, we held a special event at St. Paul’s to recognize the 5,000th organ transplant performed in BC; a kidney transplant. Soon after, we marked another significant milestone: the 3,000th kidney transplant. St. Paul’s is a provincial referral and renal transplant centre.

10 | 2019 - 2020 GRATITUDE REPORT

“Through the support we receive, we have been able to transform many lives,” says Dr. David Landsberg, who built the renal transplantation program at St. Paul’s 35 years ago.

Targeting new ways to combat disease Supported by St. Paul’s Foundation, PHC is a founding member of Canada’s Digital Technology Supercluster. Donors make it possible for PHC to be on the leading edge of health care innovation, and this will only be amplified at the new St. Paul’s at the Jim Pattison Medical Centre. FASTER DIAGNOSIS OF SKIN CANCER, QUICKER ULTRASOUND RESULTS One in six Canadians will develop some form of skin cancer during their lifetime – and Canada has a shortage of dermatologists. The Dermatology Point-of-Care Intelligent Network project will help improve diagnosis of skin cancer, particularly malignant melanoma, by family physicians. Using an app, doctors can take photos of moles and upload to a virtual databank, where Artificial Intelligence compares them to thousands of others to detect malignancies. “We are the leader in Canada on this,” says Dr. Nardia Strydom, PHC’s head of family practice and community medicine. Technology developed for the dermatology project will be used in the Intelligent Network Point-of-Care Ultrasound (PoCUS) project. Doctors everywhere will use wireless handheld ultrasound devices, offering feedback in real time. And patients will have access to potentially life-saving ultrasound scans no matter where they live. “Sometimes scans can produce results that are clinically significant in seconds,” says Dr. Oron Frenkel, St. Paul’s emergency physician.

A wall with a story to tell With donor support, people living at Youville Residence transformed their space, creating colourful murals alongside artist Anne Thorsteinsson. Artist’s rendering of dementia village

The future of seniors’ and dementia care Home for our seniors is more than a place; it’s a feeling.

Families brought in photos of gardens, seniors talked about their favourite fruit, staff remembered a resident’s love for a hummingbird, and the artist painted them into the scenes - all to bring more heart into the place they call home.

We support freedom of movement, autonomy, and choice for all our seniors in long-term care. That’s why Providence Living, a non-profit health care organization established by PHC to redefine seniors’ care in BC, recently signed a project agreement with Island Health to build what is believed to be the first publicly-funded dementia village in BC, and possibly Canada, in Comox. Seniors will live in a nurturing, respectful environment inspired by the dementia village in De Hogeweyk, Netherlands. Construction of the 156-bed village will take place on the site of the existing longterm care home, The Views (site of the former St. Joseph’s General Hospital) likely beginning in 2021. Another village is also slated for Vancouver.

Helping youth access the care they need “I was 18 years old when I first came to St. Paul’s, full of confusion and fear. Over the years, and throughout various admissions, the team at St. Paul’s has continued to walk alongside me. I’m thrilled to see that the mental health programs at St. Paul’s are receiving more funding. As a past and current patient of the St. Paul’s Eating Disorder program, I can speak to the dire need for more funding.” – Sierra Turner, speaking at the May 2019 Scotiabank gift announcement.

Thanks to a gift from RBC Foundation, Foundry continues to grow their youth peer support and family support programs across BC. By bringing mental health and substance use care and support services under one roof, Foundry ensures young people aged 12 to 24 can find the help they need in their communities - and have a voice in their care. With 11 community-based, partnership-driven centres across BC, the Foundry network served 9,770 unique youth in 2019. But the need to provide care is great and an additional eight locations are set to open by 2023. By late March 2020, Foundry was connecting with youth online and providing virtual services due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sierra Turner, grateful patient

This gift established the Scotiabank Youth Transition Program, a new program which supports young people with serious health issues as they transition from pediatric to adult care.

A legacy for nurses With Pat Graham’s gift, nurses can enhance their education and professional development, leading to better patient care. One group that best exemplifies St. Paul’s 125-year legacy of compassion is our nurses. When the last class graduated in 1974, St. Paul’s School of Nursing had trained nearly 4,000 nurses! Sheila Patricia Graham, known as Pat, was one of our nursing graduates, and received her nursing diploma in August 1940. Pat was proud to work her entire 36-year career as a registered nurse at St. Paul’s. In her will, Pat generously directed one quarter of her estate to St. Paul’s Foundation. She instructed her executors to help identify “one or more appropriate charitable purposes consistent with my long history as a registered nurse at St. Paul’s Hospital.” Working together, the Pat Graham Nursing Award was established in 2017. Thanks to Pat’s gift, each year 20 to 30 nurses at St. Paul’s receive the Pat Graham Nursing Award, presented at PHC’s annual Professional Practice Awards Ceremony. The award comes with funds recipients can use for tuition costs or professional development, to provide patients with the highest level of care. We are all beneficiaries of Pat’s foresight in making a gift in her will to St. Paul’s. Thank you, Pat!
