A Great Weekend For This Year’s Working Steam

This year saw another successful Stotfold Working Steam weekend, thankfully the rain held off and we even saw some lovely autumn sunshine make an appearance!

The weekend always brings a slightly different crowd to the event with many steam and machiner y enthusiasts travelling from far and wide to experience and enjoy ever y thing the weekend has to offer. We were thrilled to also see may local residents come along to enjoy the huge variety of attractions, alongside a fabulous array of craft stalls and

an incredible selection of places to eat and drink

As always, the Stotfold News Magazine were delighted to suppor t the event with our ‘guess the weight of the pumpkin’ providing many hours of amusement We especially enjoyed watching those that took the task ver y seriously - the weight was actually 21 2kg! - we had over 70 guesses on the Saturday ranging from the incredibly close to the not so accurate!

Our thanks as always to ever yone that came along to suppor t the weekendthe funds raised play a pivotal role in securing the future of our Mill and the ongoing maintenance and running costs involved.

Thank you also to all those that shared their lovely photographs with us, including local photography enthusiasts Jane Evans and Stephen McKenna who have kindly loaned us some to share with you on these two pages.

LOCAL life..

Finding out more about the people behind our local businesses...

Each m onth we like to introduce you to another of ou r wonderfu l Stotfold & Arlesey N ews Magazine advertisers - this month we are talking to familiar face to many, Emma Azzopardi from Box of Cakes

Box of Cakes

Emma, Box Of Cakes star ted it's journey primarily as a baking business - can you talk us through how the business ended up how it is today? After many years as a home -based baker, it was time to find premises as I needed more space. We began with just cakes, coffee and snacks and after a shor t while, due to the amount of customer suppor t and requests, we added to our menu. As we became bigger and busier, we extended hours and added breakfast too along with takeaway. I then took on extra staff to still enable me to keep my hand in making celebration and wedding cakes

Box of Cakes has always been a community business that cares (your Covid care packages you were a prime example of this) - What do you enjoy most about being such a large par t of the Stotfold community? Being involved in suppor ting businesses, schools and charities with sponsorship, raffle prizes and gifts and par ticipating in community events when they arise. It's great to see the children growing up that visit us here on a regular basis and you really get to know families and their pets too

If you could bake one thing which contained all of your most favourite ingredients togetherwhat would this be and why? I was about to reply our Pina Colada cake because I absolutely love pineapple and coconut (reminds me of my honeymoon) however its missing a couple of ingredients that I also love, so without a doubt, 'Hummingbird cake' It's SO good, and not sickly sweet so an all day cake, but I believe any time is the right time for cake!!

Your working day star ts ridiculously early - if you had chance to bake something spectacular for three special people - who would they be and why? Wow, this one made me think David Attenborough, what an icon, I would love to create a Natural World masterpiece, with so much scope for colours, textures and structural design

Roald Dahl - He represents ever y thing Chocolate, colour ful, funny, weird and wonder ful, proving imagination has no limitations and lastly Henr y Cavill - just because!!!

We know you are an incredibly busy person and like to travel - Where in the world do you feel has the best food and what are your favourite dishes to enjoy?

This one is ver y easy for me... Italy! Most of my best memories are linked to great food here, incredible Pizza and Gelato in Sardinia, Antipasti and Pasta in Rome, amazing porchini risotto in Venice, apres ski Lemoncello in Livigno and the best coffee in Murano (think I had five!) and its so true when things are made with love, passion and local fresh produce, it makes you want to return again and again!

We love to learn more ab ou t ou r wonde rfu l magazine ad vertisers! If you have a local business and would like to par ticipate in a future LOCAL LIFE feature then get in touch!

The Working Steam Weekend was, as always, a lovely event, with plenty of visitors enjoying the various exhibits and stalls Did you get to see the Steam Ploughing, or maybe the Tractor Pulling? If you’d be interested in making next year ’s Working Steam Weekend another successful one, maybe you’d like to join our Events Team?

On the subject of the Working Steam Weekend, and indeed the whole summer season, we’d like to say a huge thank you to ever yone who has come to the Mill this year (exhibitors, visitors and traders at the big events, and our lovely visitors on Sundays). The biggest thank you goes to our amazing volunteers, not just at the Steam Fair and Working Steam Weekend but at the Mill throughout our opening season.

Ever yone at Stotfold Mill is a volunteer, from the chaps running the milling machiner y to the marshals wandering the show ground We all give up our time to keep the Mill working and the wheels of histor y turning If it wasn’t for our amazing volunteers, the Working Steam Weekend and Steam Fair in the spring wouldn’t happen, and our wonder ful working watermill wouldn’t run Thank you We really do appreciate ever y thing you do

So, what’s next for the Mill?

By the time you read this, we’ll be closed for the Winter –which doesn’t mean we stop working! The Mill requires plenty of elbow grease and maintenance over the winter months There’s always something to be done at the Mill!

Not only that, we’re planning a Christmas trail for children (a bit like our regular Spooktacular, but with a Christmas theme!) More details about this fun event will be on our website shor tly Right now, the weather has taken a decided turn for the autumnal, so I’m off to find my woolly socks and thermal gloves, ready for the chilly months ahead Maybe I’ll see you kicking up leaves in the Nature Reser ve this month or admiring the sharp silhouette of a bare branch against the crisp blue sky? If you take a pic, don’t forget to tag us in any social media posts!

Of course, the next big thing is to plan for the 2025 season –if you’d like to join us as a volunteer, do get in touch via enquiries@stotfoldmill.com We’re looking for ward to welcoming you to the team!

Poppies & Poppyfields Nurser y

Autumn is a lovely time of the year, with beautiful colours, conkers and that lovely autumnal smell. We have also had stacks of rain which provides oppor tunity for splashing in puddles, watching rain drops run down the windows and looking at patterns on umbrellas, wellingtons and raincoats! Children have loved looking for dewy cobwebs, first thing in the morning, counting birds and squirrels, and having fun with forest school activities!

Children have explored transpor t and movement, which has provided invaluable oppor tunity for reinforcing road safety, which is even more impor tant with the quietness of electric cars and the ever-increasing traffic on our roads We have looked at speed and distance within our activities Our Giant African Land Snails were sadly not in the running when compared to spiders or squirrels dashing about in our gardens and through the trees!!

October was Black Histor y Month and we introduced activities to value diversity, including dance, music, famous people and foods We also had an amazing session with Abi, an ex-parent who came to teach French to our children They loved it! Thankyou, Abi!

Our new families are settling well into Poppies life and we send our best wishes to our children continuing their learning in their new Lower Schools Our structured groups; Dandelions, Fir Cones and Pebbles are settling well, where ability-appropriate activities are designed to suppor t the development of ever y child in our Poppies family

We would also like to take this oppor tunity to thank all at Stotfold Mill for their October Steam Weekend. This is provided by volunteers, and for that we say a big thankyou! Many of our families enjoy this community event!

Poppies and Poppyfields both offer breakfast club, nurser y sessions, afterschool club, and full day care, from Monday to Friday during the term and additionally offer holiday club. Poppies age range is 2 years old to Reception, while Poppyfields is 2 years old to Year 2. QUIZ

News from Roecroft Lower School

This month we have an update from our Key Stage 2 teams; the children have cer tainly been busy! We star ted the term in English by focusing on non-chronological repor ts The children produced repor ts about their class birds using interesting openers and different sentence types We then moved on to writing poetr y and descriptive pieces

In Ar t, our topic has been based on ar twork from the Stone Age period, namely the amazing caves in Lascaux, France In Geography, we star ted the term by studying the UK We used atlases to find major rivers and cities in the countr y, as well as the different seas that surround us With the weather in September being full of rain, we spent more time than usual in our hall covering indoor PE skills such as core skills and gymnastics When the weather did change, we enjoyed getting out on to the field for games of football!

Year 4 have had a brilliant star t to their final year, demonstrating our school values beautifully by applying for jobs in different committees including Ar t Council, Science Ambassadors and Eco Warriors. In Histor y, the children have been learning about the Romans focussing on how they created and maintained an empire. In English, the children have then been exploring non-chronological repor ts and using their historical knowledge of the Romans to create their own repor t targeted at children.

In Science, they have loved learning about electricity for the first time. They have shown a brilliant understanding of how to stay safe around electricity and made their own circuits, added homemade switches and tested materials to identify conductors too.

In DT, they have explored mechanisms and designed and produced moving persuasive posters We loved seeing the children demonstrate their passions and had posters covering a wide range of topics including adopting animals, preser ving rainforests and playing spor ts

Thank you for taking the time to read about how busy our children have been and for showing an interest in our school community We have learnt this term how impor tant our school community is and have been reminded of the impor tance of showing care and love to those around us In school we follow a behaviour curriculum linked to the Values -Based Education approach; this sees us teaching the values of Respect, Belonging, Honesty, Kindness, Perseverance, Resilience, Cooperation, Appreciation, Tolerance, Positivity and Courage, to name but a few I wonder which of these values really resonate with you personally

With warmest wishes, Mrs Cross

Update from The Need Project

• 721 parcels provided in 21 working days • 416 top- up-bags collected from our Pop- up sites • £51,025 estimated value of the food for the month • £6,602 50, the average monthly cost to run the charity • 1620 adults, 1467 children & 322 pensioners - the amount of people helped in August

It’s been another ver y busy month for us at the project September has seen a large number of referrals come in to us721, which is about 120 more than August There have been over 415 top up bags of the best before items, which would normally other wise have gone in the bin

We are truly grateful for our amazing suppor t as usual We are so grateful for the thoughts and especially the prayers, which help and are so impor tant Also, the practical suppor t, be it through donations or just a smiling face We continue to see many people at our doors during the week and it always makes us happy that the top up bags of best before going out, rather than binned.

We now have nearly 18,000 items towards our total goal of 30,000 tins and we are amazed by how much we been given. We are going to extend it through October because of the church and school har vest festivals. We have already star ted preparing for Christmas. We will be ver y ver y busy as usual. I would like to sincerely thank all the volunteers, throughout the project, which without them, we would not be able to function. They are truly a real blessing to me and ever y one of them goes the extra mile.

Moving onto the new building It seems a little bit like a long process to me, but things are moving along Hopefully, we will get the keys soon and can star t to develop the building into what we feel is right It is still to be a place of Christian worship, but also our new home and we will be able to develop a space for the community, which can be used by all

As we pray ever y morning at the Project, we ask for God’s guidance in all that we are doing and all the decisions we make and in ever y conversation with ever y person We know things are really hard for so many people and it doesn’t seem to be getting any easier, but we are tr ying to do what we can with what we’ve got, and we are always happy to talk to people. Please pop in and see us and asked what we are doing. Thank you again for ever y thing you do for us, and I pray you have a blessed month. We pray we will bless people, and we will continue to be blessed by others. We thank God for his incredible provision. Thank you Gordon - Praise God always

Lights O f Life Ser vice O f Remembrance

The Garden House Hospice in Letchwor th is opening its gardens to the public in November for its annual festival of remembrance A ‘stunning’ display of lights will be created as a tribute to people no longer with us The annual ‘Lights of Life’ ser vice will take place from 5-6pm on Sunday 17th November It will be hosted by BBC Regional Radio presenter, Babs Michel and also consists of live music from local singer- songwriter Rox y Searle, readings from staff and families, and the official switch on of the ‘Lights of Life’ The ser vice is free to attend but must be pre -booked due to high demand

People are also invited to write a message on a dedication star which will be hung in a display in the gardens surrounded by twinkling lights For each star dedicated the Hospice asks for a donation, which is used to fund the care they give patients and their loved ones this winter

These dedication stars can be viewed at the ser vice, or in a garden visit later in the week. 15-minute slots can be booked between 5-7pm from Wednesday 20th to Sunday 24th November.

Kerr y Cunnane is Legacy and In-Memor y Giving Manager at the Hospice: “Lights of Life is a lovely way to remember a loved one This is our 25th year holding this special event Ever yone is welcome to be a par t of Lights of Life www ghhospicecare org uk/lights -of-life

It has been a challenging year for the Stotfold Nature Reser ve, with lots of rain causing ver y muddy conditions, just at a time when we were tr ying to get the boardwalk replaced After several delays, the first phase of the work has been completed We recognize that there is still a muddy gap, and more replacement work needs to be done, which we hope the Mill will be able to fund soon

In the meantime Teasel volunteers have tried to keep as much of the site as possible accessible, strimming paths and cutting back overhanging vegetation in our for tnightly work par ties And our effor ts have once again been recognized, when the site was awarded Green Flag status for 2024 – a Government sponsored scheme which recognises and rewards well managed parks and green spaces across the countr y

Teasel also carries out work on other green spaces around Stotfold –including Etonbur y Heritage Community Orchard, in par tnership with Arlesey group Acorn.

During the summer, a maze of paths had been cut through the long grass, but in September we cleared the whole area in between the trees, and raked the grass off to the side Hopefully we will be able to use this as a mulch around the trees next year Many of the trees (apples, pears and plums) had fruit, although by the time it was ripe for human consumption most of the fruit had gone Hopefully this was enjoyed by the local insects, birds and small mammals Whilst the trees are still young, the main concern is that they thrive and continue to grow The orchard lies between the Pendleton Centre and Etonbur y Wood

At Teasel it is not all about work, and in October we booked a couple of sessions Badger watching at the Tewin Orchard reser ve If you are patient visitors are treated to an amazing spectacle of these splendid creatures feeding and playing. The first group saw a record 18 all out at the same time! At this time of year Badgers are feeding up for the winter – they don’t hibernate, but still spend the coldest days sleeping in their Setts (the underground network of tunnels and chambers where they live during the day). Mental Health Matters - with Jo Loach

Winter wellbeing

Now that the clocks have gone back, our daylight hours are diminishing as we head towards the Winter Solstice Many of us find the long, cold, dark days of Winter a challenge to navigate The additional difficulties around excessive rain with the flooding implications, can add to these as we’ve recently seen While it can be easy to hunker down and hibernate during these months, it can also be helpful to remind ourselves of the basics that suppor t our mental and emotional health We may need to be more intentional and proactive about practising good self-care to keep our spirits up at this time With less daylight hours on offer, it’s impor tant to prioritise getting outside even for shor t periods on a lunch break or at the weekends Time out in nature, when suitably wrapped up for the weather can really calm our often- stressed-out systems Even a shor t twenty-minute walk outside has been shown to lift us

Last time I spoke of ‘glimmers’ and this is the time to seek to see and savour the Winter wonders on offer The act of moving/walking par ticularly with friends and even better with the four-legged, tail wagging variety can be a real pleasure. Winter offers to wow us with all the ever-changing scenes of nature. As the temperatures drop, there’s the mesmerising, soothing powers of a real fire. To get lost in the movement and colour of the flames can be deeply relaxing.

As always, remaining connected to trusted friends is of paramount impor tance. This is even more true if you struggle with Winter blues or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Again, it may be necessar y to be more intentional about meeting up with loved ones to relax, talk, share highs and lows and eat home -made winter warming food together.
