Who we are

Our Purpose

Mission and Vision

St Michael’s College is a Catholic school in the Lasallian tradition which is committed to the human and Christian education of the young, especially the poor*, through Community, Challenge, Choice.

A member of the global Lasallian family, St Michael’s College is committed to create a welcoming, inclusive Lasallian community, aligned with strategic commitment to optimise student experiences and outcomes.

Community

Our commitment is to provide opportunities that will prepare students to be compassionate and enthusiastic participants in society who prioritise service to others, especially the marginalised and those in need. Guided by Lasallian teachings, enriched by contemporary educational theory and practices, students, staff and families are empowered to flourish and find success.

We are an inclusive and respectful community where each individual is known, valued and cared for, enabling them to feel confident to explore their curiosities, flourish and fully realise their potential.

Challenge Individual growth is achieved through engagement, opportunity and recognition, underpinned by a positive learning culture that is authentic, challenging and supportive.

Choice Through a quality Lasallian education, inspired by the Gospel and a concern for social justice, students are empowered to better choose who they become as people, learners and leaders in the world. * The Lasallian school calls its members to an awareness of the poor and victims of injustice, and respond to their needs through programs of community service, advocacy and justice education.

Our Ethos

History

St Michael the Archangel

The origins of Lasallian education date back to 17th century French priest St John Baptist de La Salle, founder of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian schools (De La Salle Brothers).

St Michael was the great champion of God when the first creatures rebelled against their Creator. God called upon the angels who had chosen Michael to throw Lucifer and his companions out of heaven down into darkness. The archangel who led the army of the faithful angels cried out a mighty war cry:

St John Baptist de La Salle was born in Rheims in 1651 to wealthy parents. A highly educated person, St John was preparing for his ordination into the priesthood in 1678 when he was inspired to become a teacher after a meeting with a lay teacher. Responding to the needs of impoverished boys, he established schools which were accessible to all, especially to the socially and economically deprived. In 1719 St John Baptist de La Salle died, but his philosophy continued to grow and expand. His idea of providing education for young people that reflects the values of Jesus Christ inspired a tradition which now spans across 80 countries. St John Baptist de La Salle was canonised in 1900, and in 1950 Pope Pius XII named him Patron of Teachers. The first Lasallian school in Australia opened by the Brothers in 1906 and was located in Armidale, New South Wales. In 1954, St Michael’s College, Beverley was founded to cater for the growing population in the western suburbs of Adelaide. With an enrolment of 29 students on that first day, St Michael’s College today boasts an enrolment of over 1950 students. The College will be fully co-educational in 2027.

Mi (who) Ka (is like) El (God)! Who is like God! ‘Who is like God’ is reflected on the College crest in Latin “Quis et Deus”. This war cry became the archangel’s name Michael.

The Crest Quis ut deus: Latin for ‘who is like God’. Glorious Cross: symbol of salvation and resurrection. Laurel leaves: symbol of reward and achievement. Shield: symbol of strength, faith and fortitude. Star of Bethlehem: symbol of the sign of faith.

Personal and Social Capability The Alice Springs (Mparntwe) Declaration in 2019 outlines a vision for all Australian students that they ‘have a sense of self-worth, self-awareness and personal identity that enables them to manage their emotional, mental, spiritual and physical wellbeing’, with a sense of hope and ‘optimism about their lives and the future’ (MCEETYA, p. 9). The development of personal and social capability is a foundation for learning and for citizenship. Therefore, underpinning the Lasallian ethos are the curriculum documents of both Australian Curriculum (ACARA) (Years 7-10) and the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE Years 11-12). Within these frameworks, it is specified that students develop their personal and social capability.

4

Personal and social capability involves students in a range of practices including: •

recognising and regulating emotions,

developing empathy for others and understanding relationships,

establishing and building positive relationships,

making responsible decisions,

working effectively in teams,

handling challenging situations constructively,

leadership skills.

Rationale Overview

Pastoral Care

Principles Considered:

The Pastoral Care of students at St Michael’s College is informed by the Lasallian Vision of schooling, and the personal capabilities outlined in the Australian Curriculum ( Years 7-10 ) and the South Australian Certificate of Education ( Years 11-12), to assist with the development of all students so that they are able to reach their academic, spiritual, emotional, social, and physical potential.

Respectful relationships that support each student

Students deserve the fundamental right to safety and protection

Families and schools work in partnership with one another and outside agencies

The care and wellbeing of students has to be honest, respectful and trusting between the adults and students

More specifically, through Pastoral Care we: 1. Provide an environment in which every student is valued, feels safe and has someone with whom they can talk. 2. Respect the dignity of each person. 3. Develop a spirit of community through positive relationships between staff, students and parents. 4. Develop self-discipline and personal responsibility. 5. Provide opportunities for spiritual growth/ reflection. 6. Educate students in a Christ centred model of leadership. 7. Encourage participation in social justice initiatives. 8. Provide activities and strategies that develop students’ personal, organisational and lifestyle skills and choices. 9. Provide guidance with regard to subject selection, vocational and career options. 10. Foster participation in community building and recreational activities. 11. Encourage students to build on their strengths, celebrate achievement. Application of the above is in specific Year Level Pastoral programs.

Year 7

St Michael’s College, in conjunction with Catholic Education of South Australia, have made a commitment to move Year 7 to the secondary campus. This means that, in most schools, Year 6 will become the final year of primary schooling. Year 7 will become the first year of junior secondary schooling. St Michael’s College made this change in 2018 with the Beverley Campus and has involved all local catchment schools from South Australia making this change in 2019. St Michael’s College is working in clusters and regions to ensure a smooth transition for students from one school to the next. The educational needs of our students are paramount. St Michael’s College offers support such in this transitional model of Pastoral Care and ‘peer support’ programs that nurture students as they settle into their new learning environment. Our Pastoral Care program focuses on ‘Personal Growth and Building Resilience’, as students are experiencing a number of changes in their lives. We will focus on transitioning students into secondary education and College life, strategies for working with others and forming/maintaining friendships, recognising different forms of bullying, and building resilience and wellbeing.

8

In doing this we will be providing students with the necessary tools to make good choices and be positive role models. The Year 7 Program also incorporates and seeks to develop the capabilities highlighted in the Australian Curriculum (selfawareness, self-management, social awareness and social management) through student involvement in a range of activities and learning experiences which aid in the development of the whole person; spiritually, academically and socially. Our College has dedicated teaching staff and areas where younger students can gather at recess and lunch times. We have mirrored the interstate Catholic schools model to ensure a smooth transition of Year 7 becoming a part of the secondary schooling model.

Year 10

Year 10 Pastoral Care seeks to develop student wellbeing and confidence as the transition from middle school to senior school takes place. The Pastoral program provides a multitude of opportunities for students to develop themselves, focusing on self, community, leadership and future pathways. Community and self is explored through two key events. Community Action Day (CAD) and Reflection Action Day (RAD). CAD introduces students to the many diverse ministries of the Catholic Church and other charity organisations in Adelaide. Students through various activities explore the act of helping others less fortunate than themselves on the day. RAD explores key issues affecting students at this time in their lives. Students are provided with inspiration for selfmotivation and personal development. They are challenged to reflect on their relationships, their priorities and the direction of their lives as they enter their senior years of schooling. Leadership is encouraged through the Peer Support program. Peer Support leaders mentor and assist Year 7 students with transition into Secondary education, welcoming them into the St Michael’s environment. They are also considered Year 10 Leaders who are involved with organising,

14

leading and participating in events both at the college and in the wider school community. This program evolves in Lasallian Leadership in Year 11 and 12 providing students with an opportunity to develop their faith and leadership over many years. Many events centre on life choices. The Year 10 program supports this with programs such as the Sonya Ryan Foundation – cyber safety, Paul Dillon – drugs and alcohol, Police driver education and guest speakers; Dietician Yasmina Diab and speakers from Pelvic Pain Foundation. Students will also hear from old scholars Daniel Scali and Michael Sorgiovanni on ways to improve your mindset and achieve your goals, pushing past boundaries that hold you back from being successful. Through the “Blurred Minds Academy”, Year 10s will be educated on the dangers and legality of vaping. The development of faith is supported through biweekly Chapel service, year level mass and various assemblies. Academically, Year 10 students explore their future through the Exploring Identities and Futures (EIF) a compulsory subject within SACE. They are introduced to SACE and make choices for subject selection going into Year 11.

The Year 11 Pastoral program is based around providing information to students to assist them in making good choices in their lives. The focus is on academic progression, leadership and life choices. Academic progress is monitored according to SACE requirements and time is spent preparing students to select subjects for Year 12. Students also participate in exams at the end of each semester. Leadership is encouraged through Lasallian Youth Leadership, where participants are involved in organising, leading and participating in various community events. Year 11 students then vote for their College Leaders in Year 12. Faith development is supported through Chapel, liturgies, Mass and a Reflection Day.

The Pastoral Care of students at St Michael’s College is informed by the Lasallian Vision of schooling, to assist with the development of all students so that they are able to reach their academic, spiritual, emotional, social, and physical potential. In Year 12 we aim to achieve the following through our Pastoral Program:

Provide activities and strategies that develop students’ personal, organisational and lifestyle skills and choices by facilitating the study skills organisation, Elevate to present to our students on various occasions throughout the year, as well as addressing these themes in our year level assemblies.

Develop self-discipline and personal responsibility by outlining and maintaining standards through our assemblies and in Pastoral Care.

Encourage students to build on their strengths and celebrate achievement by conducting weekly College Leadership meetings as well as encouraging students to speak and/or perform at year level gatherings. We also celebrate student achievement at Academic Assemblies and Service Award Ceremonies.

Provide opportunities for spiritual growth and reflection through our Year Level Masses, Year 12 Retreat and Seminar Days throughout the year. Enhance growth mindset, with the implementation of various guest speakers and seminars, including; Headspace and resilience expert, Holly Scott. Students in Year 12 are often reminded that they are not defined by their ATAR and that forming positive habits every day will set them up for a bright future.
