PASTORAL CARE AT ST MICHAEL’S COLLEGE

The Pastoral Care of students at St Michael’s College is informed by the Lasallian Vision of schooling, and the personal capabilities outlined in the Australian Curriculum (Years 7-10 ) and the South Australian Certificate of Education (Years 11-12), to assist with the development of all students so that they are able to reach their academic, spiritual, emotional, social, and physical potential.

More specifically, through Pastoral Care we:

1. Provide an environment in which every student is valued, feels safe and has someone with whom they can talk.

2. Respect the dignity of each person.

3. Develop a spirit of community through positive relationships between staff, students and parents.

4. Develop self-discipline and personal responsibility.

5. Provide opportunities for spiritual growth/reflection.

6. Educate students in a Christ centred model of leadership.

7. Encourage participation in social justice initiatives.

8. Provide activities and strategies that develop students’ personal, organisational and lifestyle skills and choices.

9. Provide guidance with regard to subject selection, vocational and career options.

10. Foster participation in community building and recreational activities.

11. Encourage students to build on their strengths, celebrate achievement.

Application of the above is in specific Year Level Pastoral programs.

Principles Considered:

• Respectful relationships that support each student.

• Students deserve the fundamental right to safety and protection.

• Families and schools work in partnership with one another and outside agencies.

• The care and wellbeing of students has to be honest, respectful and trusting between the adults and students.

MISSION AND VISION WHO WE ARE

Mission and Vision

St Michael’s College is a Catholic school in the Lasallian tradition which is committed to the human and Christian education of the young, especially the poor*, through Community, Challenge, Choice.

Community

We are an inclusive and respectful community where each individual is known, valued and cared for, enabling them to feel confident to explore their curiosities, flourish and fully realise their potential.

Challenge

Individual growth is achieved through engagement, opportunity and recognition, underpinned by a positive learning culture that is authentic, challenging and supportive.

Choice

Through a quality Lasallian education, inspired by the Gospel and a concern for social justice, students are empowered to better choose who they become as people, learners and leaders in the world.

* The Lasallian school calls its members to an awareness of the poor and victims of injustice, and responds to their needs through programs of community service, advocacy and justice education.

Our Purpose

St Michael’s College is dedicated to a whole of College approach to facilitate our Catholic and Lasallian educational experience. Our strong heritage is based on the principles of 300 years of Lasallian Education, guided by the De La Salle Brothers and our Founder’s teachings.

A member of the global Lasallian family, St Michael’s College is committed to create a welcoming, inclusive Lasallian community, aligned with strategic commitment to optimise student experiences and outcomes.

Our commitment is to provide opportunities that will prepare students to be compassionate and enthusiastic participants in society who prioritise service to others, especially the marginalised and those in need. Guided by Lasallian teachings, enriched by contemporary educational theory and practices, students, staff and families are empowered to flourish and find success.

THE CREST

Quis ut deus: Latin for ‘who is like God’

Glorious Cross: symbol of salvation and resurrection

Laurel leaves: symbol of reward and achievement Shield: symbol of strength, faith and fortitude

Star of Bethlehem: symbol of the sign of faith.

St Michael the Archangel

St Michael was the great champion of God when the first creatures rebelled against their Creator. God called upon the angels who had chosen Michael to throw Lucifer and his companions out of heaven down into darkness. The archangel who led the army of the faithful angels cried out a mighty war cry: Mi (who) Ka (is like) El (God)! Who is like God!

‘Who is like God’ is reflected on the College crest in Latin “Quis et Deus”. This war cry became the archangel’s name Michael.

OUR HISTORY

The origins of Lasallian education date back to 17th century French priest St John Baptist de La Salle, founder of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian schools (De La Salle Brothers).

St John Baptist de La Salle was born in Rheims in 1651 to wealthy parents. A highly educated person, St John Baptist de La Salle was preparing for his ordination into the priesthood in 1678 when he was inspired to become a teacher after a meeting with a lay teacher. Responding to the needs of impoverished boys, he established schools which were accessible to all, especially to the socially and economically deprived.

In 1719 St John Baptist de La Salle died, but his philosophy continued to grow and expand. His idea of providing education for young people that reflects the values of Jesus Christ inspired a tradition which now spans across 80 countries. St John Baptist de La Salle was canonised in 1900, and in 1950 Pope Pius XII named him Patron of Teachers.

The first Lasallian school in Australia opened by the Brothers in 1906 and was located in Armidale, New South Wales.

In 1954, St Michael’s College, Beverley was founded to cater for the growing population in the western suburbs of Adelaide. With an enrolment of 29 students on that first day, St Michael’s College today boasts an enrolment of over 1950 students. The College will be fully co-educational in 2027.

The children in your care are a letter which Christ dictates to you, which you write each day in their hearts, not with ink, but with the Spirit of God.

St John Baptist de La Salle, 1680

PERSONAL AND SOCIAL CAPABILITY

The Alice Springs (Mparntwe) Declaration in 2019 outlines a vision for all Australian students that they ‘have a sense of self-worth, self-awareness and personal identity that enables them to manage their emotional, mental, spiritual and physical wellbeing’, with a sense of hope and ‘optimism about their lives and the future’ (MCEETYA, p. 9).

The development of personal and social capability is a foundation for learning and for citizenship. Therefore, underpinning the Lasallian ethos are the curriculum documents of both Australian Curriculum (ACARA) (Years 7-10) and the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE Years 11-12). Within these frameworks, it is specified that students develop their personal and social capability.

Personal and social capability involves students in a range of practices including:

• recognising and regulating emotions,

• developing empathy for others and understanding relationships,

• establishing and building positive relationships,

• making responsible decisions,

• working effectively in teams,

• handling challenging situations constructively,

• leadership skills.

PASTORAL CARE IN YEAR 7

At St Michael’s College our focus is to assist your child with a positive and smooth transition from Primary to Secondary school. The educational needs of our students remain our top priority. The College offers support through our transitional model of Pastoral Care and ‘peer support’ programs, which help students acclimate to their new learning environment. Our Pastoral Care program emphasises ‘Personal Growth and Building Resilience,’ addressing the various changes students face during this period.

Our focus includes transitioning students into secondary education and College life, fostering strategies for collaboration and friendship, recognising different forms of bullying, and promoting resilience and wellbeing. By doing so, we equip students with the tools to make positive choices and

serve as role models. The Year 7 Program also aims to develop capabilities highlighted in the Australian Curriculum, such as self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and social management. These are cultivated through a range of activities and learning experiences that support the holistic development of students—spiritually, academically, and socially.

Our College has dedicated teaching staff and designated areas where younger students can gather during recess and lunch times. We have adopted the interstate Catholic schools model to ensure a seamless transition for Year 7 into the secondary schooling framework.

PASTORAL CARE IN YEAR 10

Year 10 Pastoral Care seeks to develop student wellbeing and confidence as the transition from middle school to senior school takes place. The Pastoral program provides a multitude of opportunities for students to develop themselves, focusing on self, community, leadership and future pathways.

Community and self is explored through two key events. Community Action Day (CAD) and Reflection Action Day (RAD). CAD introduces students to the many diverse ministries of the Catholic Church and other charity organisations in Adelaide. Students, through various activities explore the act of helping others less fortunate than themselves on the day. RAD explores key issues affecting students at this time in their lives. Students are provided with inspiration for self- motivation and personal development. They are challenged to reflect on their relationships, their priorities and the direction of their lives as they enter their senior years of schooling.

Leadership is encouraged through the Peer Leadership program. Peer Support leaders mentor and assist Year 7 students with transition into Secondary education, welcoming them into the St Michael’s environment. They are also considered Year 10 Leaders who are involved with organising, leading and participating in events both at the college and in the wider school community. This program evolves in Lasallian Leadership in Year 11 and 12 providing students with an opportunity to develop their faith and leadership over many years.

PASTORAL CARE IN YEAR 12

At St Michael’s College, Pastoral Care is guided by the Lasallian vision of education, aiming to support every student’s academic, spiritual, emotional, social, and physical development.

Our Year 12 Pastoral Program seeks to achieve this through the following initiatives:

Fostering Self-Discipline and Responsibility

By setting clear standards and maintaining them through year level assemblies and Pastoral Care sessions, we encourage students to develop self-discipline and take personal responsibility for their actions.

Promoting Spiritual Growth and Reflection

Opportunities for spiritual growth are provided through Year Level Masses, the Year 12 Retreat and Seminar Days. These events are designed to deepen students’ sense of purpose and their relationship with God.

Encouraging a Growth Mindset

With guest speakers like Holly Scott, a resilience expert, and partnerships with organisations such as Headspace, we inspire students to adopt a growth mindset. Year 12 students are reminded that their ATAR does

not define them and that building positive habits daily lays the foundation for future success.

Developing Essential Skills

We offer activities and strategies to enhance personal, organisational and lifestyle skills. Outside presenters such as Elevate Education provide tailored study skills workshops and exam preparation, reinforced by discussions in assemblies throughout the year.

Celebrating Achievement

Achievements are celebrated regularly through weekly College Leader meetings and opportunities for students to speak or perform at gatherings. Milestones are further recognised at Academic Assemblies and Service Award Ceremonies, fostering a culture of encouragement and College pride.
