PREFACE & ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

This commemorative book was produced in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of St Martins Lutheran College. We would like to express our great thanks to the past and present students, staff and parents who have contributed their time, memories and photographs for inclusion in this commemorative book.

In a busy school it is impossible to include everything that has occurred over the last 40 years. Throughout these pages you will find some of the major events and milestones from the College’s 40 year history. Memories may fade with time and one person’s recollection may differ from another’s, but our hope is that this book can record the school’s story from humble beginnings for years to come.

The stories and information within this book were compiled from the College’s archive system and the recollection of current and former members of staff along with the wider school community.

While every effort has been made to ensure that the information in this book is accurate and factual, we ask that any identified inaccuracies are communicated to the College via email at marketing@stmartins.sa.edu.au

One thing that has certainly shone through while compiling this book is the immense spirit of the St Martins community. From the very beginning the support of the students, staff and parents was commendable and has continued as the school has grown into the College it is today.

St Martins Lutheran College would like to thank everyone that has been part of the journey over the last 40 years. May this blessed school continue for another 40 years.

THE EARLY YEARS

1982 - 1986

FOREWORD

February 7 1982 - First day of St Martins Lutheran School.

During 1981 various meetings were held to plan the beginning of St Martins Lutheran School. How? When? Where? And Why? Going forward in faith, hope and love our prayers were answered. The Christmas Holidays of 1981 were spent planning and preparing, to have the location of “St Mary’s Catholic Junior School” transformed to “St Martins Lutheran School”. This location on Pick Avenue was our home for 5 years and it was the most exciting time for us.

Our founding Principal Mr Neil Fulwood and his family, along with my husband, Harrold and our daughter, Sharolyn spent many days cleaning and scrubbing as we prepared for school to begin in February 1982. Gambier East Primary School was a great help during this time; they gifted us desks, books, and other resources to help us begin our journey. They also allowed us to have library lessons at their school and utilise their Canteen for lunch orders once a week.

Neil and I joined the “Small Schools Hub” for professional development – sharing ideas and enjoying each other’s company. Our involvement in this meant we could also be involved with the “Small Schools Sports Day”. Practicing marching for the Commercial Street parade, then out to Blue Lake Sports Park for the big event are such fond memories.

Mr Fulwood began the 1982 school year with students in Years 4, 5, 6 and 7 while I had the Years 1, 2 and 3. However, with the mid-year intake of Preps my Year 3 students progressed to Neil’s class. We always had composite classes during these years and as the years progressed the school continued to grow; more children and more staff.

Our congregation, School Council and ‘Parents and Friends’ were very supportive and a blessing to us throughout these early years.

During 1986, prayers had been answered and hard work by all had paid off, our wonderful plans were being fulfilled by our Heavenly Father. Finally, we would have our own school. There were many day trips to “Crouch Street” where the whole community would come along to “dig and delve” to prepare the land for the new building. These were such happy days!

The building was completed and it was time to move! I guess I could say this move was the most exciting one. The first 5 years at Pick Avenue were a wonderful and blessed journey.

Starting a Lutheran School in Mount Gambier

STARTING A LUTHERAN SCHOOL | 1979

In 1979 the St Martin’s Lutheran Church Congregation approved a Committee to investigate the feasibility of starting a Lutheran school. The committee consisted of Pastor B. Bartholomaeus, Dr P. Allen (Chairman), N. Mogg, O. Joppich, S. Wenke, and L. Kowald (Secretary). R. Schwarz and A. Kroker were co-opted onto the committee later in the process.

The first meeting was held on May 31 1979. The results of the feasibility study indicated that a Lutheran school could be successful in Mount Gambier. The Church congregation unanimously accepted the proposal.

FORMING THE SCHOOL COUNCIL | 1981

With the school preparing to open, the feasibility committee were no longer required and hence the first St Martins Lutheran School Council was formed. The members were: Dr P. Allen (Chairman), Pastor B. Bartholomaeus, N. Mogg (Treasurer), A. Kroker, L. Kowald, R. Schwarz, A. Versluis, with B. Kent, P. Lutze and V. Schild representing the Parents and Friends.

CALLING A PRINCIPAL | 7 June 1981

The committee put a call out to Mr Neil Fulwood to be the founding Principal of St Martins Lutheran School on June 7 1981. He accepted the call and visited Mount Gambier to meet with the committee on August 8 1981. On October 18 1981, Mrs Shirley Crook was appointed as the first teacher of St Martins Lutheran School.

In the school’s first year of operation the St Martins staff joined the “Small Schools Hub”. Their involvement in this hub provided many benefits for the school and the students. One of the major benefits was being invited to participate in the Mount Gambier ‘Small Schools Sports Day’. Students excitedly practiced their march around the school grounds in preparation for the Commercial Street Parade where they would proudly carry the new school banner. After the march students were transported to Malseed Park where the sporting activities were held.

Building the Future

SOD TURNING CEREMONY TO CELEBRATE NEW CONSTRUCTION | 9 March 1986

In 1986 a vacant parcel of land was sourced a short distance from Crouch Street North, officially known as Part 9, Section 1126, Gambier. Part of the land had been used as an old quarry that was then filled with rubble and rubbish, like old car wrecks. On March 9 1986 a Sod Turning Ceremony was held to celebrate the construction of what would become the site of the new school facilities. This is the College’s current site on St Martins Drive. The original school building is now the Administration building.

LAYING THE FOUNDATION STONE | 6 July 1986

On July 6 1986, the school community gathered to lay the foundation stone at the new school construction site. It features the bible verse, “Train up a child in the way he should go.” Proverbs 22:6

BUILDING THE FUTURE | March - December 1986

The construction of the new school commenced in March 1986 and continued through to December. During this time, there were a number of staff, parent volunteers and members of the Church congregation who dedicated their time to the preparation and construction of the new school. It was not uncommon for families to be completing yard work, planting trees and painting at the new school site in the evenings and on weekends. It was thanks to these generous people and the local builders that the new school site was ready for the 1987 school year.

MOVING ON UP | December 1986

The construction was completed and it was all hands on deck to move location from Pick Avenue to Crouch Street before the new year. The staff spent their holiday break making trips across town with trailer loads of desks, chairs and learning resources to ensure the school was setup and ready to open at the new location for the start of the 1987 school year. It was reported in a January 1987 edition of The Border Watch that the cost of construction reached $450,000.

GROWING ENROLMENTS WARRANTS MORE STAFF | 1986

After opening St Martins with just two staff in 1982, the growth of the schools enrolments warranted the need for additional teaching and administration staff. In 1986 there were an additional three staff employed by the school.

THE DAWN OF A NEW SCHOOL

1987 - 1994

FOREWORD

March 1 1987 - Official Opening of the new school building at the Crouch Street North location.

My journey with St Martins Lutheran College commenced in 1989 when the school was still in its infancy; seven years in operation. I commenced my employment as the second School Secretary, replacing Val Schild. There were approximately one hundred students and I was one of six staff members. My job was school secretary and being the only administrative staff member, it translated to ‘everything’ including one of my favourite things, interacting with the children.

The entrance to the school was a straight white metal track with blue gums lining one side of the road with bright student artwork attached to the fence and I found it such a welcoming path to the school. The Luther Rose greeted you as you approached the front door and it became obvious to me from the outset that the community of St Martins was a Christ centred and supportive community which had very close ties with the Kindy and Church. I was instantly welcomed and drawn into this loving community.

There was a very active Parents & Friends, Catering Committee (combined with the Church) and supportive parent body. The building was modern and new and the foundation steps of those from the Church whose vision to build a school and provide quality Christian Lutheran education to the Mount Gambier community was well under way.

In 1990 the school’s second Principal Anthony Mueller arrived. With his vision and enthusiasm, the school continued to grow in student and staff numbers as well as building projects. The Worship program grew and developed under his leadership in conjunction with Pastor Byron Klein, who played a major role in the spiritual life of the staff and students.

St Martins’ presence and reputation in the community continued to grow with enrolments increasing to the level that waiting lists were necessary.

The School Council was incredibly active and hands on, not just with the decision making but day to day jobs and activities. The members were heavily invested in the school and its future.

This was a period of growth and change at St Martins. It was full of planning for the future of the school. The school held successful annual fairs, lamington drives, provided quality catering for many events in the community including weddings, Christmas Carol singing through the streets of Mount Gambier and a float in the pageant each year, just to name a few.

I am proud to have been a fundamental part of this wonderful school community in a full-time capacity for twenty-six years and then have the privilege to continue in a relieving role for another seven years. It has been a privilege to serve Christ, the students, the staff and the St Martins Community. My life has been richer for thirty-three years as a result.

SCHOOL FAIR | 1991

The School Fair was an annual event in the 1990s with the entire school community invited to attend and/or run a stall. The stalls included tractor rides, a merry-go-round, baked goods, flowers and a barbeque, among many other things. The School fairs provided an opportunity for families to connect with the school and with other families in a social setting, while raising funds for school resources.

NEW PLAYGROUND INSTALLED | 1992

Students eagerly watched on as a new playground was constructed in the school yard! During this time there was a lot of excitement among the children as the playground had everything from a flying fox to a fireman’s pole. THE GROWTH OF LUTHERAN EDUCATION IN MOUNT GAMBIER

1995 - 2003

FOREWORD

March 27 2002 - Year 3 students participating in computing lessons

The era of 1995 to 2003 was characterised by the expansion of the school from one class per year level to two. This was a big decision at the time and hindsight has proven it to be a great decision. With more students comes the need for more classrooms, facilities, resources and staff across all areas of the school. First came four new classrooms which now serve Year 2 and 3 students, as well as grounds improvements and development of the main carpark. Then came the MultiPurpose Hall, Chapel and Canteen followed by another four classrooms which are still the Foundation and Year 1 classrooms. 2002 brought about plans for expanding the school into secondary schooling and over the coming years major build works were underway along with recruiting staff and students to be a part of this next phase of Lutheran Education in Mount Gambier.

As the school has grown so too have the opportunities for the students. School Captains and Vice Captains, House Captains for the three teams Henty, Sturt and Cunningham. In 2002 the House names changed to Tremelling, Livingston, Yeates and Whitty named after local accomplished sportsmen as the need for four teams came about. Music and singing have always been a part of St Martins including Festival of Music, bands and school concerts. It was 2001 when the Year 6/7 students performed the first musical ‘A Kids Summer Nights Dream’ under the direction of Mrs Tanya Harms. It was a great success and the annual musical has continued with the Year 6 cohort ever since. Interschool sport, sports days, Tournament of the Minds, debating, dance clubs, Jump Rope for Heart, camps and sleepovers at school all filled the year. 1998 was the inaugural Canberra Camp after many visits to the Grampians by the Upper Primary students.

Parents have always been a great support and especially during these years. Craft Groups, Mother’s and Father’s Day Stalls, working bees, Hot Lunch Days, fundraising for playgrounds, cricket nets, Lego, maths equipment, library books and much more. It was the Barn Dances, Trivia Nights and school fairs that brought everyone together. Their involvement in such a way created the wonderful sense of community that St Martins is still known for today.

House Teams Rebranded

ST MARTINS WELCOMES MR ALEXANDER | January 2002

At the start of the 2002 school year St Martins Lutheran School welcomed new Principal, Mr John Alexander. Mr Alexander came to St Martins from Living Waters Lutheran Primary School in Alice Springs NT.

HOUSE TEAMS CHANGE | 2002

In late 2001, student numbers grew to a size where there were simply too many students in each of the three existing houses Henty (red), Cunningham (yellow) and Sturt (blue), named after early settlers of the Mount Gambier area. Extensive research was conducted, with local Aboriginal words, significant Australian sports people, and noted local Mount Gambians considered as the names for the new four House system. Principal John Alexander made the final decision and thus were born the current House team names, Livingston (blue), Tremelling (red), Whitty (green) and Yeates (yellow), named after high achieving local sports people.

Yeates - Mount Gambier local, John Yeates, was an avid footballer who captained the Geelong Football Club in the 1960s. He was the youngest captain in the Victorian Football League at that time.

Whitty - W. J. (Bill) Whitty, was another local athlete who formed part of the 13th Australian Cricket touring team in 1909. In his first overseas trip the team travelled to Birmingham to face England. While they lost this test they went on to retain the Ashes that year.

Tremelling - John Tremelling was a local electrician who competed in the World Pistol Shooting Championships in Moscow in 1958. John returned home with a Silver and a Bronze medal, after receiving the highest score obtained by an Australian until that point. Upon returning from Moscow John qualified for the free pistol event at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome.

Livingston - John and Frank Livingston, were yachtsmen from Mount Gambier who won many famous Yacht Races in their yacht Kurrewa IV. Their finest victory, in 1948, came in the 1,300-mile Auckland-toSydney race, when they set a new time record despite the presence of a cyclone.

THE RISE OF THE COLLEGE

2004 - 2013

FOREWORD

2004 - Students play in front of the newly built Secondary School building ‘The Ark’.

At the beginning of the 2004 school year St Martins opened its doors with a new name, St Martins Lutheran College. The new name reflected a new direction with the enrolment of Year 8 students for the first time. This was also the year that saw the retirement of a founding member of the school, Shirley Crook. Shirley had seen significant change during her 23 years at the school and was well-known for her ongoing enthusiasm.

The College took on the look and feel of Secondary education with the opening of the upstairs section of the Ark by founding Principal, Neil Fulwood. His granddaughter Lilli was later to be a student in this very building. It was nicknamed the Ark quite early in its construction as it looked rather like Noah’s Ark. Coincidentally, around this time, the College built a float for the Christmas pageant, a Noah’s Ark!

Principal John Alexander, who had overseen the transition to secondary, retired at the end of 2006 bringing a new Principal, Dianne Eckermann, to the school. Robyn Teakle became Head of Primary and Merryn Ruwoldt Head of Secondary school, followed by Robert Albrecht in 2011.

Celebrations accompanied the graduation of the first Year 12 cohort, Madeline Jennings, Rachel Harris, Cassandra Williams, Caitlin Dow and Hannah Sims, in 2008. It may have been a small group, but it laid the foundation for Year 12 classes to come.

Other highlights included bringing home the Most Improved shield from the SESSSA athletics competition in 2010, finally some silverware for the College! This was also the year the Trade Training Centre, funded through a successful grant application, opened. The opening in 2011 of a muchneeded new library and classrooms provided more space for a growing school. The golf program and a secondary school musical added to the variety of experiences provided for students. International tours to both China and Germany forged good friendships, an appreciation of other cultures and hopefully some language acquisition as well.

The years 2004 to 2013 were a time of considerable growth in student numbers, facilities and opportunities, making St Martins a vibrant, welcoming school, continuing to grow in Christ.

ST MARTINS REBRAND | 2008

In 2008, Principal, Mrs Dianne Eckermann, saw the opportunity to rebrand the College with a new logo, typeface and signage. This rebrand provided a fresh, modern and sophisticated new look for the College. The logo (which is the current logo of the College) was designed by then teacher, Donna Wild. Donna worked with Dianne to produce a logo that truly represented the College and the region with symbolism incorporated into the design.

The symbolism within the logo is: The blue lines represent the waters of the Blue Lake and the life giving water that flows through Jesus our Saviour. The three lines making up the triangle also represent the triune God as well as symbolising our local area. The cross intertwines between these two symbols as a constant reminder that Jesus is always with us, beside us, before us and behind us in all that we do.

A TIME OF GROWTH AND REFLECTION

2014 - 2021

FOREWORD

April 20 2018 - St Martins Lutheran College German Study Tour

“Those who drink the water should never forget those who dug the well.” Chinese proverb

The period between 2014 and 2021 was a time of great growth at St Martins as student numbers expanded rapidly, with new buildings, staff, and other key areas needing to also grow to meet needs.

But as the College’s fourth decade came to an end, it was also a time to look back and reflect on where the school had come from.

Personally moving from the Primary School into Secondary at St Martins, prompted me to reflect on the courage of the first group of students and families to embark on Secondary education at St Martins in 2003. In this year, fifteen eager new students set out on a journey that had never happened at St Martins before.

Whenever I think of this first group of Year 8’s and their families and the courage they showed, I’m always amazed. They were very much taking a leap of faith.

People don’t like to be guinea pigs at the best of times. They don’t like thinking that something new is going to be tested on them, that might not be that good to start off with. This wasn’t testing out a new ice-cream shop either. This was their children’s future.

Secondary education at St Martins was an uncertain proposition at the time. There were only fifteen students. How was St Martins going to provide a variety of subjects to meet their children’s needs as they moved into their senior years? It might be okay for Year 8 and 9 where everyone would be doing similar core subjects, but what then?

It’s comparatively easy sending children to St Martins these days. Facilities are good, students are blessed with high quality teachers, numbers have grown with students able to access the same wide range of subjects as at any other school.

These students and families aren’t the only ones who dug the well we now drink from though. Over four decades ago it was the members of the St Martins congregation who had a dream for providing a Lutheran education in Mount Gambier. It was the families at the time who put their faith in a completely new school. It was the Shirley Crooks, Neil Fulwood and the other early staff who set the school’s culture and Spirit, which is so special.

And it’s every other person who has been a part of St Martins over the past four decades.

THE FUTURE: ON FIRM FOUNDATIONS

2022 and Beyond

FOREWORD

September 16 2021 - Aerial photo of St Martins Lutheran College

So, what about the College’s future? Well, the College is at an exciting stage in its growth and development. We are currently blessed to have an enrolment of around 780 students and an excellent staff of close to 130. We have very supportive parents and the loyal support of our St Martin’s Church congregation. And we enjoy a good reputation in the local region for providing a quality Christian education, within a caring community atmosphere. But there is always more to do.

In the last 12 months we have seen several new and exciting initiatives for the College. These have included:

• the official opening of new Visual Arts, and Food and Hospitality facilities

• all teams representing the College being officially known as “The Saints”

• an extension to the Trade Training Centre building to provide more classrooms

• the refurbishment of the audio-visual system in the College Gym

• the creation of a new play area for our Junior School students; and

• the purchase of an additional 11 acres of land bordering the College campus

In August 2021 the College adopted a new Statement of Purpose as follows:

We are a welcoming, caring, Christ-centred learning community where students grow, flourish and are inspired to make a difference.

At the same time, the College approved a new five-year strategic plan with three key focus areas:

• whole College wellbeing

• contemporary teaching, learning and curriculum; and

• College facilities

With these focus areas in mind, this year we have seen several exciting new initiatives, including specialist staff training in Inquiry Learning and the teaching of reading. This has been part of a concerted effort to further strengthen student learning across the College, along with reading and literacy skills

Other exciting initiatives have included:

• the establishment of a set of Wellbeing Principles for the College

• the completion of a brand-new state of the art Science Laboratory

• the installation of two new Middle School classrooms

• new fencing around the College and further landscaping

Capital works projects planned for the rest of this year include:

• the expansion of our current College Canteen

• the replacement of the Gymnasium floor; and

• the creation of a Wellbeing Centre

On the back of this, the College has just finalised a new Campus Master Plan, which provides for the future development of a range of exciting new facilities over the next twenty-five years. Next year we hope to start on some projects based on this new plan.

As we celebrate our 40th anniversary as a school, the College is entering an exciting phase with a bright future. We are very grateful for the support that we receive from our school families, staff, College friends, the St Martin’s Church congregation and the wider community. We thank God for the many blessings that we have received over the last 40 years.

Alan Connah (2018 - Current) Principal
