This commemorative book was produced in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of St Martins Lutheran College. We would like to express our great thanks to the past and present students, staff and parents who have contributed their time, memories and photographs for inclusion in this commemorative book.
In a busy school it is impossible to include everything that has occurred over the last 40 years. Throughout these pages you will find some of the major events and milestones from the College’s 40 year history. Memories may fade with time and one person’s recollection may differ from another’s, but our hope is that this book can record the school’s story from humble beginnings for years to come.
The stories and information within this book were compiled from the College’s archive system and the recollection of current and former members of staff along with the wider school community.
While every effort has been made to ensure that the information in this book is accurate and factual, we ask that any identified inaccuracies are communicated to the College via email at marketing@stmartins.sa.edu.au
One thing that has certainly shone through while compiling this book is the immense spirit of the St Martins community. From the very beginning the support of the students, staff and parents was commendable and has continued as the school has grown into the College it is today.
St Martins Lutheran College would like to thank everyone that has been part of the journey over the last 40 years. May this blessed school continue for another 40 years.
1982 - 1986
During 1981 various meetings were held to plan the beginning of St Martins Lutheran School. How? When? Where? And Why? Going forward in faith, hope and love our prayers were answered. The Christmas Holidays of 1981 were spent planning and preparing, to have the location of “St Mary’s Catholic Junior School” transformed to “St Martins Lutheran School”. This location on Pick Avenue was our home for 5 years and it was the most exciting time for us.
Our founding Principal Mr Neil Fulwood and his family, along with my husband, Harrold and our daughter, Sharolyn spent many days cleaning and scrubbing as we prepared for school to begin in February 1982. Gambier East Primary School was a great help during this time; they gifted us desks, books, and other resources to help us begin our journey. They also allowed us to have library lessons at their school and utilise their Canteen for lunch orders once a week.
Neil and I joined the “Small Schools Hub” for professional development – sharing ideas and enjoying each other’s company. Our involvement in this meant we could also be involved with the “Small Schools Sports Day”. Practicing marching for the Commercial Street parade, then out to Blue Lake Sports Park for the big event are such fond memories.
Mr Fulwood began the 1982 school year with students in Years 4, 5, 6 and 7 while I had the Years 1, 2 and 3. However, with the mid-year intake of Preps my Year 3 students progressed to Neil’s class. We always had composite classes during these years and as the years progressed the school continued to grow; more children and more staff.
Our congregation, School Council and ‘Parents and Friends’ were very supportive and a blessing to us throughout these early years.
During 1986, prayers had been answered and hard work by all had paid off, our wonderful plans were being fulfilled by our Heavenly Father. Finally, we would have our own school. There were many day trips to “Crouch Street” where the whole community would come along to “dig and delve” to prepare the land for the new building. These were such happy days!
The building was completed and it was time to move! I guess I could say this move was the most exciting one. The first 5 years at Pick Avenue were a wonderful and blessed journey.
“From little things big things grow.” Shirley Crook (1982 - 2004)
Founding Classroom TeacherIn 1979 the St Martin’s Lutheran Church Congregation approved a Committee to investigate the feasibility of starting a Lutheran school. The committee consisted of Pastor B. Bartholomaeus, Dr P. Allen (Chairman), N. Mogg, O. Joppich, S. Wenke, and L. Kowald (Secretary). R. Schwarz and A. Kroker were co-opted onto the committee later in the process.
The first meeting was held on May 31 1979. The results of the feasibility study indicated that a Lutheran school could be successful in Mount Gambier. The Church congregation unanimously accepted the proposal.
With the school preparing to open, the feasibility committee were no longer required and hence the first St Martins Lutheran School Council was formed. The members were: Dr P. Allen (Chairman), Pastor B. Bartholomaeus, N. Mogg (Treasurer), A. Kroker, L. Kowald, R. Schwarz, A. Versluis, with B. Kent, P. Lutze and V. Schild representing the Parents and Friends.
The committee put a call out to Mr Neil Fulwood to be the founding Principal of St Martins Lutheran School on June 7 1981. He accepted the call and visited Mount Gambier to meet with the committee on August 8 1981. On October 18 1981, Mrs Shirley Crook was appointed as the first teacher of St Martins Lutheran School.
In February 1982, the first students were officially enrolled at St Martins Lutheran School. Year 1 student, Simon Belcher, is recorded as student 001 in the original enrolment register.
St Martins Lutheran School was officially opened by Pastor B. Bartholomaeus on February 7 1982, with 33 primary students and two staff, Principal, Mr Neil Fulwood, and Teacher, Mrs Shirley Crook . The school originally operated in the school rooms located at St Mary’s Catholic Church on Pick Avenue, Mount Gambier, which is now the location of Boandik St Mary’s Aged Care Facility.

In the school’s first year of operation the St Martins staff joined the “Small Schools Hub”. Their involvement in this hub provided many benefits for the school and the students. One of the major benefits was being invited to participate in the Mount Gambier ‘Small Schools Sports Day’. Students excitedly practiced their march around the school grounds in preparation for the Commercial Street Parade where they would proudly carry the new school banner. After the march students were transported to Malseed Park where the sporting activities were held.
In 1986 a vacant parcel of land was sourced a short distance from Crouch Street North, officially known as Part 9, Section 1126, Gambier. Part of the land had been used as an old quarry that was then filled with rubble and rubbish, like old car wrecks. On March 9 1986 a Sod Turning Ceremony was held to celebrate the construction of what would become the site of the new school facilities. This is the College’s current site on St Martins Drive. The original school building is now the Administration building.
On July 6 1986, the school community gathered to lay the foundation stone at the new school construction site. It features the bible verse, “Train up a child in the way he should go.” Proverbs 22:6
The construction of the new school commenced in March 1986 and continued through to December. During this time, there were a number of staff, parent volunteers and members of the Church congregation who dedicated their time to the preparation and construction of the new school. It was not uncommon for families to be completing yard work, planting trees and painting at the new school site in the evenings and on weekends. It was thanks to these generous people and the local builders that the new school site was ready for the 1987 school year.
The construction was completed and it was all hands on deck to move location from Pick Avenue to Crouch Street before the new year. The staff spent their holiday break making trips across town with trailer loads of desks, chairs and learning resources to ensure the school was setup and ready to open at the new location for the start of the 1987 school year. It was reported in a January 1987 edition of The Border Watch that the cost of construction reached $450,000.
After opening St Martins with just two staff in 1982, the growth of the schools enrolments warranted the need for additional teaching and administration staff. In 1986 there were an additional three staff employed by the school.
1987 - 1994
My journey with St Martins Lutheran College commenced in 1989 when the school was still in its infancy; seven years in operation. I commenced my employment as the second School Secretary, replacing Val Schild. There were approximately one hundred students and I was one of six staff members. My job was school secretary and being the only administrative staff member, it translated to ‘everything’ including one of my favourite things, interacting with the children.
The entrance to the school was a straight white metal track with blue gums lining one side of the road with bright student artwork attached to the fence and I found it such a welcoming path to the school. The Luther Rose greeted you as you approached the front door and it became obvious to me from the outset that the community of St Martins was a Christ centred and supportive community which had very close ties with the Kindy and Church. I was instantly welcomed and drawn into this loving community.
There was a very active Parents & Friends, Catering Committee (combined with the Church) and supportive parent body. The building was modern and new and the foundation steps of those from the Church whose vision to build a school and provide quality Christian Lutheran education to the Mount Gambier community was well under way.
In 1990 the school’s second Principal Anthony Mueller arrived. With his vision and enthusiasm, the school continued to grow in student and staff numbers as well as building projects. The Worship program grew and developed under his leadership in conjunction with Pastor Byron Klein, who played a major role in the spiritual life of the staff and students.
St Martins’ presence and reputation in the community continued to grow with enrolments increasing to the level that waiting lists were necessary.
The School Council was incredibly active and hands on, not just with the decision making but day to day jobs and activities. The members were heavily invested in the school and its future.
This was a period of growth and change at St Martins. It was full of planning for the future of the school. The school held successful annual fairs, lamington drives, provided quality catering for many events in the community including weddings, Christmas Carol singing through the streets of Mount Gambier and a float in the pageant each year, just to name a few.
I am proud to have been a fundamental part of this wonderful school community in a full-time capacity for twenty-six years and then have the privilege to continue in a relieving role for another seven years. It has been a privilege to serve Christ, the students, the staff and the St Martins Community. My life has been richer for thirty-three years as a result.
Cherylynn Perryman (1989- 2015)
School Secretary and Personal Assistant to the PrincipalNEW FACILITIES COMPLETED IN TIME FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR | 2 February 1987
The students of St Martins Lutheran School started their first day at the new location on Crouch Street North on February 2 1987.
OPENING OF NEW SCHOOL | 1 March 1987
The new location of St Martins Lutheran School was officially opened on March 1 1987. Students, staff, parents, friends and members of the Church congregation were all in attendance with Pastor Klein leading the service.
On December 14 1987, Principal Mr Neil Fulwood sealed a time capsule to be opened 25 years later, in 2012.
For no other foundation can any one lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ 1 Corinthians 3:11
In 1988, a twilight Sports Day was held at the school, with students and staff being encouraged to wear fancy dress costumes.
Construction of the Principal’s residence commenced on the school grounds in 1988. It was officially completed and blessed on May 26 1988. The house was originally built for Mr Fulwood and his family to reside in. Throughout the years principals, pastors, school staff members and others have lived in the house. The building is now the location of the St Martins Out of School Hours Care (SMOSHC) and the Uniform Shop.
The Fulwood Building was officially opened in 1989 and was the first addition at the new school location. The new learning space was originally a shelter shed for students during break times.
December 1989
The founding Principal of St Martins Lutheran School, Mr Neil Fulwood, farewelled the community at the end of 1989. During his time at the school he oversaw the construction of the new school facilities; student enrolments grew from 33 students to 107 with an immense amount of community and cultural growth. His service from 1982 to 1989 left a strong foundation for the school to continue growing.
An annual Christmas activity was Christmas carolling on the back of a truck. St Martins staff and students would sit on the flatbed of a semi trailer and travel around Mount Gambier stopping at various locations to sing Christmas carols.
Top: 1989 - Principal Neil Fulwood addresses the congregation for the last timeIt was with great delight that St Martins Lutheran School welcomed new Principal, Mr Anthony Mueller, to start the year in 1990. Mr Mueller brought fresh ideas and drive for progression to the role, a perfect combination for a young school very much in its establishment phase.
November 1990
Participating in the Mount Gambier Christmas Parade has been a key event on the School calendar. In 1990, the students acted out the nativity scene and sang Christmas carols while Principal, Mr Anthony Mueller, played the guitar.
The School Fair was an annual event in the 1990s with the entire school community invited to attend and/or run a stall. The stalls included tractor rides, a merry-go-round, baked goods, flowers and a barbeque, among many other things. The School fairs provided an opportunity for families to connect with the school and with other families in a social setting, while raising funds for school resources.
Students eagerly watched on as a new playground was constructed in the school yard! During this time there was a lot of excitement among the children as the playground had everything from a flying fox to a fireman’s pole. This playground provided hours of entertainment for St Martins students for over 29 years before it was eventually dismantled in early 2021 to make way for additional classrooms.
| 14-15 November 1992
To celebrate the 10th Anniversary of St Martins Lutheran School, services were held on March 14 and 15 1992.
Stage 2 of the Master Plan was an extension to the original school building. The construction was completed in February 1993 and was officially opened by SA Director of Lutheran Education, Kevin Oster, on March 7 1993. This extension is now the Front Office and Administration area.
With Stage 2 completed, Stage 3 commenced. Stage 3 extended the other end of the main school building, providing additional classrooms for growing student enrolments.
1995 - 2003
The era of 1995 to 2003 was characterised by the expansion of the school from one class per year level to two. This was a big decision at the time and hindsight has proven it to be a great decision. With more students comes the need for more classrooms, facilities, resources and staff across all areas of the school. First came four new classrooms which now serve Year 2 and 3 students, as well as grounds improvements and development of the main carpark. Then came the MultiPurpose Hall, Chapel and Canteen followed by another four classrooms which are still the Foundation and Year 1 classrooms. 2002 brought about plans for expanding the school into secondary schooling and over the coming years major build works were underway along with recruiting staff and students to be a part of this next phase of Lutheran Education in Mount Gambier.
As the school has grown so too have the opportunities for the students. School Captains and Vice Captains, House Captains for the three teams Henty, Sturt and Cunningham. In 2002 the House names changed to Tremelling, Livingston, Yeates and Whitty named after local accomplished sportsmen as the need for four teams came about. Music and singing have always been a part of St Martins including Festival of Music, bands and school concerts. It was 2001 when the Year 6/7 students performed the first musical ‘A Kids Summer Nights Dream’ under the direction of Mrs Tanya Harms. It was a great success and the annual musical has continued with the Year 6 cohort ever since. Interschool sport, sports days, Tournament of the Minds, debating, dance clubs, Jump Rope for Heart, camps and sleepovers at school all filled the year. 1998 was the inaugural Canberra Camp after many visits to the Grampians by the Upper Primary students.
Parents have always been a great support and especially during these years. Craft Groups, Mother’s and Father’s Day Stalls, working bees, Hot Lunch Days, fundraising for playgrounds, cricket nets, Lego, maths equipment, library books and much more. It was the Barn Dances, Trivia Nights and school fairs that brought everyone together. Their involvement in such a way created the wonderful sense of community that St Martins is still known for today.
RobynTeakle (1990 - 2022)
Deputy Principal and Head of Junior SchoolIn 1995 the School was growing at a rapid rate, with classes from Reception to Year 7. It was decided that the school would begin the process of double streaming classes throughout the primary years. 1995 was the first year the school year commenced with two Reception classes.
On May 8 1996, the Honourable Harold Allison M.P. officially opened Stage 5 of the Master Plan. This stage featured four classrooms, a teacher preparation area and a new toilet block; this space is now used as the Year 2 and 3 learning space.
1996 saw the implementation of the school’s first Student Representative Council (SRC), a program that still runs at the College. The SRC is comprised of students elected by their peers to represent the opinions and ideas of the entire student body. In 1996 the student representatives were led by President, Michael Niemz and Vice President, Anna Coverdale.
After serving as the St Martins Lutheran School Principal for seven years, Mr Anthony Mueller farewelled the school in August 1996 as he took up the position of Head of Middle School at Immanuel Lutheran College in Buderim (Maroochydore) Queensland. During his time at the School from 1990 to 1996 he commenced double streaming throughout the primary years, and oversaw the development of four additional classrooms. Student enrolments grew from 118 to 266 and the staff grew from 9 to 23.
With the School continuing to grow at a rapid rate the community welcomed new Principal, Mr Peter Smith to start the 1997 school year.
On February 15 1998, President of the Lutheran Church of Australia, Dr. Lance Steicke, officially opened Stage 6, the Multi Purpose Hall. This building consisted of a Gym, Worship Centre, Canteen and Uniform Shop (now PE staff office).
In 1998 the Year 7 students travelled by bus to Canberra. In Canberra they visited Parliament House and the Australian Institute of Sport, as well as other activities. This is a much loved camp that still occurs annually.
After serving the St Martins Lutheran Church for 12 years and spending a considerable amount of time at the school, Pastor Byron Klein retired at the end of 1998. He was an integral part of worship in the early years of St Martins Lutheran School and instilled great values and faith into the students, staff and wider school community.
Mr Peter Smith, served as the Principal of St Martins Lutheran School for two years before becoming the Principal of Eastside Lutheran School in Hobart, Tasmania. During his time at St Martins he managed the successful completion of the Multi Purpose Hall and the introduction of a Japanese Language Program.
ST MARTINS COMMUNITY WELCOMES MR HOLLIDAY | 1999
In 1999, Mr Brian Holliday joined St Martins Lutheran School as Principal. During his time at the School he was instrumental in the evolution of worship at St Martins, introducing a more contemporary style.
Grandparents Day is a highlight on the school calendar. In 1999 students invited their grandparents and special friends along to a special performance in the School’s gym. There were drama performances, musical numbers and a worship service. The special guests then attended class with the students, some participating in computer lessons, reading, or other fun activities, before enjoying lunch together in the School gardens.
MR HOLLIDAY LEADS SCHOOL INTO NEW MILLENNIUM | 2000
Mr Holliday was the Principal of St Martins for one and a half years before moving on mid way through 2000. Mrs Loretta Ashford stepped up as Acting Principal to finish the 2000 school year.
On February 11 2001, Director of Lutheran Schools SA and NT, Barry Kahl, officially opened the Foundation and Year 1 classrooms.
Mrs Loretta Ashford was the Principal of St Martins Lutheran School from 2000 to 2001. The wider St Martins community was grateful for her service as Principal over the school years and wished her well in her new role at Lutheran Education VIC, NSW and TAS.
ST MARTINS WELCOMES MR ALEXANDER | January 2002
At the start of the 2002 school year St Martins Lutheran School welcomed new Principal, Mr John Alexander. Mr Alexander came to St Martins from Living Waters Lutheran Primary School in Alice Springs NT.
HOUSE TEAMS CHANGE | 2002
In late 2001, student numbers grew to a size where there were simply too many students in each of the three existing houses Henty (red), Cunningham (yellow) and Sturt (blue), named after early settlers of the Mount Gambier area. Extensive research was conducted, with local Aboriginal words, significant Australian sports people, and noted local Mount Gambians considered as the names for the new four House system. Principal John Alexander made the final decision and thus were born the current House team names, Livingston (blue), Tremelling (red), Whitty (green) and Yeates (yellow), named after high achieving local sports people.
Yeates - Mount Gambier local, John Yeates, was an avid footballer who captained the Geelong Football Club in the 1960s. He was the youngest captain in the Victorian Football League at that time.
Whitty - W. J. (Bill) Whitty, was another local athlete who formed part of the 13th Australian Cricket touring team in 1909. In his first overseas trip the team travelled to Birmingham to face England. While they lost this test they went on to retain the Ashes that year.
Tremelling - John Tremelling was a local electrician who competed in the World Pistol Shooting Championships in Moscow in 1958. John returned home with a Silver and a Bronze medal, after receiving the highest score obtained by an Australian until that point. Upon returning from Moscow John qualified for the free pistol event at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome.
Livingston - John and Frank Livingston, were yachtsmen from Mount Gambier who won many famous Yacht Races in their yacht Kurrewa IV. Their finest victory, in 1948, came in the 1,300-mile Auckland-toSydney race, when they set a new time record despite the presence of a cyclone.
After 22 great years of providing Lutheran education in Mount Gambier St Martins Lutheran School expanded to include secondary education. The school started from a humble 33 students and 2 staff in 1982 and grew to have 317 students and 36 staff in 2003.
2004 - 2013
At the beginning of the 2004 school year St Martins opened its doors with a new name, St Martins Lutheran College. The new name reflected a new direction with the enrolment of Year 8 students for the first time. This was also the year that saw the retirement of a founding member of the school, Shirley Crook. Shirley had seen significant change during her 23 years at the school and was well-known for her ongoing enthusiasm.
The College took on the look and feel of Secondary education with the opening of the upstairs section of the Ark by founding Principal, Neil Fulwood. His granddaughter Lilli was later to be a student in this very building. It was nicknamed the Ark quite early in its construction as it looked rather like Noah’s Ark. Coincidentally, around this time, the College built a float for the Christmas pageant, a Noah’s Ark!
Principal John Alexander, who had overseen the transition to secondary, retired at the end of 2006 bringing a new Principal, Dianne Eckermann, to the school. Robyn Teakle became Head of Primary and Merryn Ruwoldt Head of Secondary school, followed by Robert Albrecht in 2011.
Celebrations accompanied the graduation of the first Year 12 cohort, Madeline Jennings, Rachel Harris, Cassandra Williams, Caitlin Dow and Hannah Sims, in 2008. It may have been a small group, but it laid the foundation for Year 12 classes to come.
Other highlights included bringing home the Most Improved shield from the SESSSA athletics competition in 2010, finally some silverware for the College! This was also the year the Trade Training Centre, funded through a successful grant application, opened. The opening in 2011 of a muchneeded new library and classrooms provided more space for a growing school. The golf program and a secondary school musical added to the variety of experiences provided for students. International tours to both China and Germany forged good friendships, an appreciation of other cultures and hopefully some language acquisition as well.
The years 2004 to 2013 were a time of considerable growth in student numbers, facilities and opportunities, making St Martins a vibrant, welcoming school, continuing to grow in Christ.
Dianne Eckermann(2007 - 2017)
Former PrincipalJanuary 2004
St Martins Lutheran School became St Martins Lutheran College and expanded to include Secondary students in 2004. The first Year 8 class had just 14 students.
At the end of 2004 St Martins Lutheran College farewelled Shirley Crook, the school’s founding teacher, after 23 years of dedicated service to the school and its students. Shirley embodies the St Martins Spirit; her connection to the College runs deep and she will forever remain a valued member of the community.
The school name change at the start of 2004 also saw a change in logo. The Luther Rose that had been proudly worn by St Martins students for 22 years was switched out for a new design. The new design was predominantly text based with the College’s name and motto being the focus.
The upstairs of ‘the Ark’(Rooms 201 - 206) were officially opened on May 22 2005, by the College’s inaugural Principal, Mr Neil Fulwood. These classrooms were pivotal in the expansion of the College to incorporate the secondary years. Shortly after completion, the building was christened the ‘Ark’, due to its large, boxy design and vague resemblance to the way the ark is described in the Bible.
In 2006 the downstairs of the Ark was completed (Rooms 101 - 106).
After five years at the College, the community wished Principal Mr John Alexander well as he entered the next stage of his life in retirement. His years at the College, particularly his role in the commencement of Secondary education at St Martins, were extremely important in the school’s history.
MRS ECKERMANN JOINS THE COLLEGE |
January 2007
The beginning of the 2007 school year saw new Principal, Mrs Dianne Eckermann start her St Martins journey.
ST MARTINS CELEBRATES 25 YEARS |
7 February 2007
In 2007, the College celebrated 25 years since it first opened in 1982. In those 25 years the College grew from two staff and one class with 33 students, to 60 staff members and 21 classes with 423 students.
With student enrolments continuing to trend upward at a rapid rate, the College made a decision to split into two sub-schools. Much like a traditional school the Foundation to Year 6 students were referred to as the Primary School and students in Year 7 to Year 12 were the Secondary School. While this split was already quite prominent throughout the College it saw the appointment of Mrs Robyn Teakle as Head of Primary and Mrs Merryn Ruwoldt as Head of Secondary.
In 2008, Principal, Mrs Dianne Eckermann, saw the opportunity to rebrand the College with a new logo, typeface and signage. This rebrand provided a fresh, modern and sophisticated new look for the College. The logo (which is the current logo of the College) was designed by then teacher, Donna Wild. Donna worked with Dianne to produce a logo that truly represented the College and the region with symbolism incorporated into the design.
The symbolism within the logo is: The blue lines represent the waters of the Blue Lake and the life giving water that flows through Jesus our Saviour. The three lines making up the triangle also represent the triune God as well as symbolising our local area. The cross intertwines between these two symbols as a constant reminder that Jesus is always with us, beside us, before us and behind us in all that we do.
St Martins Lutheran College had its first class of Year 12 students in 2008. There were five students in the class, Madeline Jennings, Rachel Harris, Cassandra Williams, Caitlin Dow and Hannah Sims.
In 2009, St Martins held its first ever ‘China Trip’! A group of staff, students and parents journeyed to China to immerse themselves in the culture. This became a biennial trip for the College up until the global COVID-19 Pandemic that halted international travel in 2020.
St Martins hosted the 2010 South East Secondary School Sports Association (SESSSA) Athletics Carnival at Marist Park. The students performed well and took home the shield for ‘Most Improved Team’, an accolade that the College would receive for many years after as the Secondary School at St Martins continued to grow.
On July 19 2010, the College reached 500 enrolled students. The 500th student was Isabella Lawrie from Foundation, who was presented with a book by Mrs Dianne Eckermann.
In 2010 the College farewelled Head of Secondary, Mrs Merryn Ruwoldt after four years of service, during which she oversaw significant growth of the Secondary years at St Martins. With a farewell often comes a new hello and at the beginning of 2011 St Martins welcomed the new Head of Secondary, Mr Robert Albrecht.
On May 6 2011, South Australian Senator, the Hon Dana Wortley, officially opened the new Trade Training Centre and Library complex, which also consisted of the Year 5 and Year 6 classrooms.
In 2011, St Martins staff members undertook the first of five German Study Tours. St Martins staff and students travelled with students and staff from Immanuel College. This became a biennial trip for the College up until the global COVID-19 pandemic that halted international travel in 2020.
In 2012, St Martins Lutheran College, with the guidance of teacher Mr Duncan Savage and the generosity of some family businesses, started the SMLCGolf program. This was the College’s first specialised sporting program and has grown in popularity and student involvement.
College Principal, Mrs Dianne Eckermann, travelled to China in 2013 to visit Shouguang Century School. It was on this trip that Mrs Eckermann signed the Sister School Agreement, which still stands to this day.
2014 - 2021
“Those who drink the water should never forget those who dug the well.” Chinese proverb
The period between 2014 and 2021 was a time of great growth at St Martins as student numbers expanded rapidly, with new buildings, staff, and other key areas needing to also grow to meet needs.
But as the College’s fourth decade came to an end, it was also a time to look back and reflect on where the school had come from.
Personally moving from the Primary School into Secondary at St Martins, prompted me to reflect on the courage of the first group of students and families to embark on Secondary education at St Martins in 2003. In this year, fifteen eager new students set out on a journey that had never happened at St Martins before.
Whenever I think of this first group of Year 8’s and their families and the courage they showed, I’m always amazed. They were very much taking a leap of faith.
People don’t like to be guinea pigs at the best of times. They don’t like thinking that something new is going to be tested on them, that might not be that good to start off with. This wasn’t testing out a new ice-cream shop either. This was their children’s future.
Secondary education at St Martins was an uncertain proposition at the time. There were only fifteen students. How was St Martins going to provide a variety of subjects to meet their children’s needs as they moved into their senior years? It might be okay for Year 8 and 9 where everyone would be doing similar core subjects, but what then?
It’s comparatively easy sending children to St Martins these days. Facilities are good, students are blessed with high quality teachers, numbers have grown with students able to access the same wide range of subjects as at any other school.
These students and families aren’t the only ones who dug the well we now drink from though. Over four decades ago it was the members of the St Martins congregation who had a dream for providing a Lutheran education in Mount Gambier. It was the families at the time who put their faith in a completely new school. It was the Shirley Crooks, Neil Fulwood and the other early staff who set the school’s culture and Spirit, which is so special.
And it’s every other person who has been a part of St Martins over the past four decades.
Damian Bradley (1998 - 2022) Head of Middle SchoolGALLIPOLI CENTENARY TOUR | 25 April 2015
April 25 2015 marked 100 years since the ANZACs landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula. To honour this event, 27 students, staff and parents participated in a Gallipoli Centenary Tour. The tour travelled through Belgium, France and Turkey, visiting many battlefields, cemeteries and memorials. On ANZAC Day the group attended a cold and wet dawn service at VillersBretonneux, along with 8,000 other attendees, to pay their respect and honour the sacrifices made. This tour was a once in a lifetime opportunity and one that the group will remember forever.
11 December 2015
After five years, Head of Secondary, Mr Robert Albrecht, farewelled St Martins and welcomed retirement. During his time at the College Robert was instrumental in building a culture of successful learning in the secondary years.
| 2016
Mr Damian Bradley had been a Primary classroom teacher at St Martins for 18 years before becoming the Head of Secondary in 2016.
CELEBRATING 175 YEARS OF LUTHERAN EDUCATION | 2014
In 2014, Lutheran Education celebrated 175 Years of Lutheran schooling in South Australia, Northern Territory and Western Australia. St Martins Lutheran College held a special celebratory event where, Principal Mrs Dianne Eckermann planted a tree as an acknowledgement of this special milestone. This tree stands proudly in the grassed area by the Library and Gym.
December 2017
After 11 Years of service and dedication to St Martins Lutheran College, Mrs Dianne Eckermann bid farewell as she took the leap, moving back to Adelaide and accepting a role as the Director of Leadership in the Lutheran Education Australia National Office.
During her time at the College she developed greater opportunities for hundreds of students from across the region, leading them towards bright and successful futures. In her time at St Martins the school doubled in size and experienced an immense amount of cultural and structural growth.
After the farewell of longstanding Principal Mrs Dianne Eckermann, a new Principal had been appointed to lead the College, however, was unable to start until mid year. During this six month period Deputy Principal/Head of Primary School, Mrs Robyn Teakle, led the College as Acting Principal.
On May 4 2018 Member for Barker, Mr Tony Pasin MP, officially opened the Middle School classrooms (107, 108, 207, 208) which are an extension to the existing Ark building.
On July 27 2018, Mr Alan Connah was officially installed as the Principal of St Martins Lutheran College. Mr Connah came to the College from Kinabalu International School in Sabah, Malaysia, with a wealth of experience to lead St Martins through the next stages of growth.
In 2018, nine St Martins students and five adults undertook the first service learning trip to Pematangsiantar, Indonesia. It was on this trip that the group visited and spent time in the College’s partner school, SDHKI 3, a small elementary school in North Sumatra.
The St Martins time capsule that was sealed and planted on December 14 1987, by Principal Mr Neil Fulwood, was set to be opened 25 Years later in 2012. It was during earth works for the new Library in 2010/2011 that the time capsule was dug up and placed in storage. Unfortunately, its time in storage lasted a few years longer than intended. While it was some years late, the time capsule was officially opened on October 27 2018, 31 years after its burial. The College held a special event to celebrate this with old scholars, founding staff and members of the wider community present.
St Martins Lutheran College started 2020 with a restructure. The College had previously been split into Primary and Secondary sub-schools, but with the significant growth of student enrolments it was decided that the structure of the school needed to be changed. From 2020 Mrs Robyn Teakle would continue in the role of Head of Junior School (Foundation - Year 6), Mr Damian Bradley would assume the role of Head of Middle School (Year 7Year 9) and Mrs Kathy Oliphant would be the Head of Senior School (Year 10 - Year 12) from 2021 onwards. During the 2020 school year Mrs Jayne Fulton held the role of Acting Head of Senior School. During this time there was an additional role added to the leadership team; Mr Jason Plunkett was appointed as the Head of Teaching and Learning.
At the beginning of 2021 the process of naming the College’s sporting teams began. Everyone in the College community was invited to have their say and vote on their preferred team name. After much deliberation the Leadership Team announced that in external competitions the College’s sporting teams would be known as ‘The Saints’. The naming of the team prompted the creation of a full catalogue of brand new sports uniforms, across all disciplines.
On November 5 2021 Member for Barker, Mr Tony Pasin MP, officially opened the new Visual Arts, and Food and Hospitality Centre.
So, what about the College’s future? Well, the College is at an exciting stage in its growth and development. We are currently blessed to have an enrolment of around 780 students and an excellent staff of close to 130. We have very supportive parents and the loyal support of our St Martin’s Church congregation. And we enjoy a good reputation in the local region for providing a quality Christian education, within a caring community atmosphere. But there is always more to do.
In the last 12 months we have seen several new and exciting initiatives for the College. These have included:
• the official opening of new Visual Arts, and Food and Hospitality facilities
• all teams representing the College being officially known as “The Saints”
• an extension to the Trade Training Centre building to provide more classrooms
• the refurbishment of the audio-visual system in the College Gym
• the creation of a new play area for our Junior School students; and
• the purchase of an additional 11 acres of land bordering the College campus
In August 2021 the College adopted a new Statement of Purpose as follows:
We are a welcoming, caring, Christ-centred learning community where students grow, flourish and are inspired to make a difference.
At the same time, the College approved a new five-year strategic plan with three key focus areas:
• whole College wellbeing
• contemporary teaching, learning and curriculum; and
• College facilities
With these focus areas in mind, this year we have seen several exciting new initiatives, including specialist staff training in Inquiry Learning and the teaching of reading. This has been part of a concerted effort to further strengthen student learning across the College, along with reading and literacy skills
Other exciting initiatives have included:
• the establishment of a set of Wellbeing Principles for the College
• the completion of a brand-new state of the art Science Laboratory
• the installation of two new Middle School classrooms
• new fencing around the College and further landscaping
Capital works projects planned for the rest of this year include:
• the expansion of our current College Canteen
• the replacement of the Gymnasium floor; and
• the creation of a Wellbeing Centre
On the back of this, the College has just finalised a new Campus Master Plan, which provides for the future development of a range of exciting new facilities over the next twenty-five years. Next year we hope to start on some projects based on this new plan.
As we celebrate our 40th anniversary as a school, the College is entering an exciting phase with a bright future. We are very grateful for the support that we receive from our school families, staff, College friends, the St Martin’s Church congregation and the wider community. We thank God for the many blessings that we have received over the last 40 years.
Alan Connah (2018 - Current) Principal
St Martins Lutheran College held its 40th Anniversary celebratory dinner at The Commodore on Saturday August 27 2022.
The evening saw old scholars, past staff, distinguished guests and current staff come together to celebrate this milestone. Guests enjoyed catching up with old friends, sharing their stories and memories from the last 40 years.
Special videos were shared on the night of key figures in the College’s history, to view the videos please scan the respective QR Codes below.
In 1981 Mr Neil Fulwood was called to be the founding Principal of St Martins Lutheran School. Neil was an integral part of St Martins in the early years. He, alongside Shirley Crook and their families, worked tirelessly to ensure the school was prepared for the first official day in 1982.
During Neil’s time as Principal the school experienced steady growth and as such a vacant parcel of land off of Crouch Street North was purchased for St Martins’ own school building to be constructed.
After 8 years of dedicated service Mr Neil Fulwood left St Martins with a strong foundation for the school to continue growing.
Mr Anthony Mueller commenced his time as Principal of St Martins in 1990. Mr Mueller came to St Martins from St John’s Lutheran School in Eudunda, South Australia.
It was during his time as Principal that the school had grown to the point of requiring double streaming classes. Under his guidance the school building was extended and additional classrooms built to allow room for growing student enrolments.
Mr Mueller farewelled St Martins after 7 years as Principal as he took up the position of Head of Middle School at Immanuel Lutheran College in Buderim (Maroochydore), Queensland.
In 1997 St Martins welcomed Mr Peter Smith. Peter had been Principal of Immanuel Lutheran School in Gawler East before becoming the Principal of St Martins.
During his time at the school he managed the successful completion of the Multi Purpose Hall, consisting of a Gym, Worship Centre, Canteen, and oversaw the introduction of a Japanese Language Program.
At the end of 1998, after two years of service, Mr Smith accepted a role as the Principal of Eastside Lutheran College in Hobart Tasmania.
Mr Brian Holliday became the Principal of St Martins Lutheran School in 1999. He came to Mount Gambier from Jindera, New South Wales, where he was teaching at St John’s Lutheran School.
During his time at the School he was instrumental in the evolution of Worship at St Martins, introducing a more contemporary style.
Mr Holliday concluded his St Martins journey mid way through 2000 and made the move to Living Waters Lutheran College in Warnbro, Western Australia.
After Mr Holliday moved on midway through 2000 Mrs Loretta Ashford, who had been the Deputy Principal, stepped into the role of Principal.
It was during her time as Principal that the extension to the Junior School was constructed and officially opened. This extension is the current Foundation and Year 1 Classrooms.
At the end of 2001, after one and a half years as Principal, Mrs Ashford accepted a new role as the Head of Sub School at Lutheran Education VIC, NSW and TAS.
In 2002, St Martins Lutheran School welcomed new Principal Mr John Alexander. Prior to his arrival in Mount Gambier Mr Alexander had been living in the Nothern Territory and working at Alice Springs’ Living Waters Lutheran Primary School.
During his time at St Martins John was actively involved in the transition from Primary School to College, with the introduction of secondary students in 2004. John also oversaw the construction of the College’s secondary building ‘The Ark’.
After 5 years as Principal of St Martins John retired to Mildura, Victoria.
In 2007 Mrs Dianne Eckermann started her journey as the Principal of St Martins Lutheran College. Mrs Eckermann had been the Head of Middle School at Immanuel College before making the move to Mount Gambier.
Mrs Eckermann arrived at a pivotal moment in the School’s history. The College had begun its secondary schooling only 3 years prior and had outgrown the facilities and resources. Her wealth of knowledge and experience in education greatly aided the College through its next stages.
During her time at St Martins she led the construction of the Trade Training Centre, Library Complex and Ark extension and fostered great relationships with the students and staff. In 2017, after 11 years of dedicated service Mrs Eckermann accepted a role as the Director of Leadership in Lutheran Education and moved back to Adelaide.
Mr Alan Connah commenced his time as the Principal of St Martins Lutheran College on 27 July 2018. Mr Connah came to the College from Kinabalu International School in Sabah, Malaysia, with a wealth of experience to lead St Martins through the next stages.
During his time as Principal the College has continued to grow. Notable moments include the College undergoing an internal restructure and the completion of the Food, Hospitality and Arts Centre.
Alan has placed the College in good stead to continue growing for many years to come.
