Thank you for providing the silver linings to 2020. While it was a year of health concerns, stress, and anxiety for many, the community overwhelmingly came together to support one another and support the hospital. Generous acts of philanthropy enabled St. John’s Health Foundation to purchase essential medical equipment and personal protective equipment. With your support, the hospital has provided excellent care for patients through the pandemic. Through the COVID-19 Response Fund, the Foundation has supported over 265 requests from St. John’s Health employees for financial assistance and access to free mental health counseling sessions for over 215 employees. Contributions from donors near and far and gifts ranging from $25 to $250,000 have shown just how much this community cares about the health and safety of our local families, friends, and neighbors.

This year the Foundation proudly supported major initiatives at St. John’s Health. Sage Living construction will be completed in the summer of 2021. This new long-term care community for seniors, offering skilled nursing, memory care, hospice, and in-patient rehabilitation, will keep loved ones close to home. Another highlight this year was the launch of the Oncology Survivorship Program to offer expanded evidence-based services to cancer patients, survivors, families, and caregivers. Mental Health JH, a pilot program in partnership with the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole, has funded free counseling sessions with local therapists for any community member seeking services. While there were fewer fundraising events in 2020, Rock the Ride, Stripping for a Cure, and the Teton Pines Women’s Golf Association’s Tee It Up For Oncology Golf Tournament were wonderful highlights of the year. This report to the community reflects contributions received during our Fiscal Year, July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020. Thanks to all of you, the Foundation was the recipient of 3,015 charitable contributions, an all-time high! Thank you for your continued support of St. John’s Health Foundation. Oncology Survivorship Program A new survivorship program is being offered at St. John’s for cancer patients, survivors, and their caregivers and family members. It was launched this fall as a pilot, and will be formalized using results and insights from the participants. Extensive research, planning, and the passion of a few invested community members made this pilot possible. When Susie McDowell, Whitney McDowell, and Shannon Hamby-Brooks approached the Health Foundation about their interest in expanded cancer survivorship services, it was clear that there was a need in our community and we had an opportunity to develop a program for individuals at any stage of their cancer journey. The dedicated leadership team in the St. John’s Health Oncology Department immediately jumped in to learn more and help guide the process. This past spring, St. John’s Health Foundation sponsored a research project to explore the interest in expanded oncology support programs and services in the greater Teton Region. A total of 121 surveys were completed, along with 15 one-one-one depth interviews. This research focused on potential programs and services supporting an integrated and holistic approach to cancer care, exploring programs like evidence-based research, nutrition counseling, specialized physical therapy, acupuncture, and more. The findings indicated a desire for expanded and affordable services to help survivors and their loved ones heal from the challenges that can result from cancer and its treatments. St. John’s Health Foundation provided funding for the Oncology Survivorship Pilot Program to offer new and expanded services to improve physical, emotional, spiritual, and psychosocial wellbeing. The services are free to participants and include yoga, healing touch, massage therapy, wellness coaching, mindfulness tools, physical and occupational therapy, spiritual direction, acupuncture, speech therapy, nutrition services, Meals with a Mission, and an oncology support group. The Oncology Department is also creating educational videos for people to access at any time.

2020 has been a year unlike any other. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused stress and anxiety for St. John’s Health employees and so many members of our community. Mental health is a cornerstone to wellness and just as important as physical health. Knowing that many community members do not have resources or knowledge of services available, valley experts from local nonprofits and private practices joined together to form Mental Health JH with funding support from St. John’s Health Foundation and the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole. Mental Health JH is a community wide initiative to make mental health resources accessible. Mental Health JH is a partnership between St. John’s Health, St. John’s Health Foundation, Community Foundation of Jackson Hole, Teton Youth & Family Services, Jackson Hole Community Counseling Center, Curran Seeley Foundation, Community Safety Network, private practice offices, and Jackson Hole nonprofits. In August, Mental Health JH launched its first “Let’s Talk” campaign to shed light on mental health issues that adults, children, and families face, and to let community members know there are resources available. This awareness campaign was a joint effort with contributions and expert advice from local nonprofits and private practitioners. St. John’s Health Foundation’s Mental Health Fund will offset the cost of care for 6 visits to mental and behavioral health practitioners throughout the valley. Symptoms such as feeling fatigued, irritable, anxious, depressed, and experiencing loss of energy, inability to focus, too much or too little sleep, significant changes in appetite, and less interest in things you used to enjoy are signs that your mental health needs care.

COVID-19 Response Fund The COVID-19 pandemic has brought unexpected challenges to our community, our nation, and our world. While so much of this crisis feels out of our control, caring for our community remains the priority for St. John’s Health and supporting the important work of our local hospital remains the priority for St. John’s Health Foundation. During the early stages of the outbreak, the St. John’s Health Foundation Board created the COVID-19 Response Fund to support hospital employees and their families and purchase necessary tools, protection, and equipment for staff to continue to provide exceptional care to patients. Donors immediately began making philanthropic gifts, which enabled St. John’s to purchase personal protective equipment, two ultraviolet disinfecting machines, outdoor testing and isolation tents, and additional medical equipment. Thanks to the remarkable generosity of many, the COVID-19 Response Fund has made it possible for St. John’s Health Foundation to fulfill the emergent needs of the hospital, our healthcare heroes, and our community. The pandemic has been stressful, especially for healthcare workers caring for patients. Staying home isn’t an option for the hospital staff. The community has wrapped their arms around our healthcare heroes by providing meals, treats, gift certificates to local businesses, cards, and encouraging messages.

The Hole Quarantine In March, local businesses began scaling down and temporarily closing as customers stayed home to slow the spread of COVID-19. As community members began to fear for the survival of beloved local shops, restaurants, and companies, Jackson resident Megan Murtagh stepped up with a plan to help. Armed with a substantial social media presence from her blog, Megan launched The Hole Quarantine, a donation-based organization that purchased meals, treats, and gifts for frontline workers from local businesses. The gift, thoughtful cards, and warm meals from The Hole Quarantine brightened the spirits of the hospital staff and supported the local economy. The locally sourced meals and gifts from The Hole Quarantine boosted morale, energized the staff, and provided an important reminder to frontline workers that this community really cares about them!
Jackson Hole Community Mask Project Emergency department nurse Keegan Pfeil played an active role during the coronavirus outbreak by quickly coordinating efforts to make masks for St. John’s Health and our community. In March, Keegan created the Jackson Hole Community Mask Project and invited locals to make cloth masks to donate to the hospital. As soon as the pandemic hit, healthcare systems bought up personal protective equipment, resulting in a national shortage of masks to protect healthcare workers, patients, and visitors. Keegan’s grassroots effort made a big difference in our small town. The response from community members was astounding and donations of handmade masks were delivered to the hospital by the hundreds. We are especially grateful to the Jackson Hole Quilters Guild, Roadhouse, Yellowberry, First Republic Bank, Jackson Hole Real Estate Associates, Iksplor, seamstress superstar Carmen Gloria Rodriguez Sanzana, and so many other caring individuals who spent countless hours sewing, for helping to keep our community masked! “I have seen firsthand, working in the emergency room during this COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of proper personal protective gear, and most importantly, masks. With a global shortage of masks, I wanted to bring our amazing community together to help. Through this community-wide mask campaign, I hope we will be able to protect not only the health care providers in Jackson and the surrounding areas, but our community as a whole. Friends of the Foundation Acts of philanthropy help local patients when they cannot afford their medical care, provide education for nurses, enable the hospital to acquire state-of- the-art medical equipment, and fund critical capital projects. This year, philanthropic support of our community hospital has been more important than ever. Friends of the Foundation gave generously, and for that we are incredibly grateful. Through the pandemic, St. John’s Health has been able to safely care for COVID-19 patients and provide excellent care for our community members.

Pulse Advisory Committee St. John’s Pulse Advisory Committee was created and launched in 2019 as part of the Foundation’s 20th Anniversary. The Committee helped to plan and execute the Rocking Sage Living Community Celebration. Now in its second year, Pulse serves an integral role as ambassadors for our community hospital. This spring, Pulse helped to resurrect the “Here for You JH” campaign developed by Leadership Jackson Hole two years ago. The committee created mental health resources for local businesses, and especially focused their efforts on providing information to salons around the valley. Pulse members meet quarterly.

St. John’s Auxiliary The Foundation is grateful for the continued support received from St. John’s Auxiliary members, who serve as ambassadors for the hospital and provide important financial support and service. Having raised more than $3 million to date, St. John’s Auxiliary is instrumental to the success of St. John’s Health Foundation and St. John’s Health. Funds raised by the Auxiliary support medical equipment purchases and enhance services to better serve our community. The Auxiliary was not able to host Spring Fling Gala and the Golf Tournament this year due to the pandemic, however, members are looking forward to organizing alternative fundraising initiatives this coming year. The Auxiliary’s current pledge is to support the purchase of a new nuclear medicine/CT scanner – integrated technology of both nuclear medicine and CT imaging performed on one system. This scanner will be used to image the heart and look for cancer in various organs. The Auxiliary also provides ongoing support of life enrichment programs at the Living Center. Auxiliary members host an annual holiday party for the residents and provide treats to compliment afternoon tea all year long. With support from local businesses, the Auxiliary is proud to celebrate the first baby born at St. John’s Health each year.

Rock the Ride Rock the Ride is a high-energy indoor team cycling fundraiser that has made a name for itself as the valley’s biggest dance party. Julie Guttormson, owner of VIM and stroke survivor, hosts the fundraiser each year to raise money for local stroke and cardiac patients receiving care at St. John’s Health. Jackson’s wildest Sunday morning party keeps getting bigger each year. The fifth annual Rock the Ride fundraiser was held on March 8, 2020 at Teton Science Schools' Coyote Lane campus. The event raised a record-breaking $118,000 with a turnout of 58 teams, 220 participants, and over 70 local business sponsors. The St. John’s Health Foundation Stroke and Cardiac Fund provides financial support for local patients in the aftermath of a stroke or cardiac event. Examples of funded requests include pediatric echocardiograms, anticoagulant medications for stroke prevention, testing for complex and rare diagnoses, and monitoring devices for conditions such as atrial fibrillation, frequent PVCs, and tachycardia.

Stripping for a Cure Stripping for a Cure, co-founded by Kay Jones and Susie McDowell, is an annual celebration of women, fly fishing and philanthropy bringing female anglers together to raise funds for the St. John’s Health Foundation. In late August, over 48 female anglers joined together for a day of fly fishing and 200 community members supported the cause by donating to the online event. This year’s event raised over $115,000 for the St. John’s Women’s Health Care Fund and Oncology Department. Thanks to Stripping for a Cure and the generous community support of the event, we are able to continue to help women in our community and purchase necessary equipment for Oncology.
Tee It Up for Oncology Tee It Up for Oncology is an annual golf tournament hosted by the Teton Pines Women’s Golf Association in support of St. John’s Oncology department. Thanks to generous participation from the Teton Pines members and Women’s Golf Association, this year’s event raised over $64,000. Since 2012, funds derived from Tee It Up for Oncology have supported the purchase of a 3-D mammography machine, brachytherapy afterloader, CT scanner, and oncology treatment bays. We are so grateful for the continued support from the Teton Pines Women’s Golf Association!

Sage Living
A New Home For A New Age St. John’s new long-term care community, Sage Living, will be ready for residents in June 2021! Residents are eagerly awaiting move-in day and are already requesting rooms. The big question residents have to answer: do you prefer the sunny side of the building with views of Snow King or the northern side with views overlooking the expansive Elk Refuge? Sage Living will offer two 20-bed long-term care neighborhoods, a 16-bed memory support neighborhood, and a 16-bed transitional care unit for patients requiring short-term rehabilitation after surgery or other medical events such as a stroke. Hospice care will be available in all three long-term care neighborhoods. Construction crews are working hard to get Sage Living ready for residents and staff. All of the steel has been erected and roofing is completed. The mechanical and kitchen equipment, windows, and insulation have all been installed throughout the building. Gas, electric, and water are turned on. In the spring of 2021, the mechanical equipment commissioning will begin. This process will ensure that all systems and components of the building are designed, installed, tested, and operate according to the plans. We are excited for the residents who will call Sage Living home. These individuals will receive the services and care they need close family members and friends, in the community they love. 10

Masks Since the start of the pandemic, St. John’s Health Foundation has handed out over 110,000 masks, including 40,000 masks made by locally owned company Yellowberry.

Stroke and Cardiac Care Fund Funded through generous donors to Rock the Ride, a cycling event hosted by VIM, the Stroke and Cardiac Care Fund provides support to individuals who need assistance paying for medical bills or affording basic necessities such as medications, rent, gas, or groceries in the aftermath of a stroke or cardiac emergency.

Nola Peacock, PT, DSc, shares this story about one of her patients: Caleb (not his real name) did not attend cardiac rehab right after his heart attack this winter because he couldn’t pay for it and had no insurance. He was unable to do much of anything other than take care of himself (dressing, showering, eating) after he was discharged from the hospital. His wife was responsible for everything around the home in addition to her full time job. Caleb was unable to work. After he applied for support through St. John’s Health Foundation he was able to attend cardiac rehab. Soon after starting cardiac rehab Caleb began taking on more physical chores at home and errands in town. Early this summer Caleb was able to return to full duty work and re-employ his construction crew of several local residents. He has lost over 30 pounds and is exercising every day. Caleb’s risk for further heart disease decreases every day. And he is back to fishing on the lake!
Obstetrics Lodging Program at the Hitching Post The Obstetrics Lodging Program was created in partnership with the leadership team in the St. John’s obstetrics department. The goal is to ensure safe deliveries for low-income women who are traveling from neighboring communities to have babies at St. John’s Health. Women come from Dubois, Tetonia, Alpine, and other towns that are well over an hour away or present a risk in the event of road closures or unsafe travel conditions in inclement weather. St. John’s Health Foundation works closely with the local OB/GYN providers to keep these patients close to the hospital in case they go into labor. The Foundation covers the cost of lodging at the Hitching Post, directly across the street from St. John’s Health for days leading up to the delivery. This year rooms were provided for 15 women prior to delivering their babies through the Obstetrics Lodging Program. The average stay is 3 to 5 nights.
Cancer Patient Support Fund The Cancer Patient Support Fund provides resources to anyone in active treatment who needs support for transportation, lodging, and to cover the cost basic needs.
