STRUCTURAL SAFETY

ON SEPTEMBER 17TH, A BREAKFAST SEMINAR focused on the structural safety and maintenance of buildings was moderated by Chad Toms (Partner at Whiteford, Taylor & Preston), and lead by Wayne Hosking (Vice President at Construction Systems Group, Inc.), Dean Gutierrez (Executive General Adjuster at McLarens), Igor Conv (Vice President at Mann Properties, Inc.) and Ellen Throop (Partner at Davis, Agnor, Rapaport & Skalny LLC). There was a great turnout and attendees learned:

■ The necessity for structural maintenance and how it can impact your association

■ The roles of a manager, lawyer, engineer and insurance agent in keeping buildings safe

■ Best practices for structural inspections and what to look for ■ Possible legislation that is being discussed in Maryland Here are a few resources for information around aging infrastructure and building safety:

■ Did you know there is a group within Community Associa-

tion’s Institute that solely focuses on research? The Foundation for Community Association Research provides authoritative

research and analysis on community association trends, issues, and operations. The mission is to foster successful and sustainable communities. The Foundation previously identified aging infrastructure as a critical concern for communities. Here is a report they produced to address this growing problem: Breaking Point: Examining Aging Infrastructure in Community Associations.

■ Todd El-Taher of Hann & Hann Construction Services wrote an article in response to the Champlain Towers tragedy: The Toxic Mix of Deficits, Denial and Declining Infrastructure.

■ Michelle Baldry of Reserve Advisors created a list of frequently asked questions (F.A.Q.s) around reserve studies and aging infrastructure: Frequently Asked Questions: Reserve Studies and Aging Infrastructure.
