Greetings from Conrad and Becky Carlsen of Carlsen Farm in the beautiful Endless Mountains region of NE Pennsylvania! We live near Rome, PA, minutes from the New York State border. You may know us by our “Frith-jof” prefix and our love of Red & White Holsteins and showing, but there is more to our story than that. Carlsen Farm began as a retirement project for Conrad’s father, Frithjof “Fred” Carlsen, in 1985. Papa was born in Norway, and brought Red Holsteins into the herd as they reminded him of Norwegian Reds. Conrad assumed management of the 182-acre farm in 1986, and we purchased it a few years later. Our 150-year-old barn had 28 tie-stalls and an attached freestall barn. Conrad milked 90 cows twice daily for the first ten years. We then milked two groups of higher quality cows, continually improving herd quality by culling. I grew up on a dairy farm and was an RN in a hospital for several years, then stayed home to raise our children: Kristin (Tom) Shores, Tory (Amy) Carlsen, and Kelsey (Stephen) Peterson. All three children helped regularly with chores and showed in 4-H while growing up, and look forward to their children showing someday. We’ve had two Polled Junior Champions at the PA State 4-H Show, and numerous Premier Breeder and Exhibitor Banners at our county fair Red & White Show, where we show and promote Polled. We sold our milking herd in 2011, and continued to down-size by selling fresh heifers. A family approached us in early 2016, looking for a farm to purchase in our area, and we sold our farm to them three months later. We then sold our remaining animals except the best show and genomic prospects, purchasing a 20-acre farmette nearby. We now house a few younger animals in our small barn, boarding bred heifers and show heifers. We have a dozen animals with GTPI up to +2677 to work with, using sexed semen, IVF, and ET work for more chances for high offspring and/ or desirable traits, and speeding up the interval between generations. Sometimes we work with other farms using these tools to maximize their genetic potential. We purchased our first Registered Holsteins in 1988, and had a registered herd bull for years. Conrad was attacked by a bull and gored in the upper thigh in 1986, so we knew how

Our first Polled bull, Hickorymea Tiger P-Red-ET, was purchased from Eddie Johnson in 1995. I began working in the barn and with the breeding program 20 years ago, and by 2002 we were using AI to individualize matings and phase out herd bulls. A key mating was Frith-jof Tiger Val P-Red (VG-85) to Briar Factor Sabre-Red-ET, resulting in Frith-jof Sabre Vicky-Red*PC (VG-88). She produced 33 embryos to Indianhead Revenge in her first conventional flush! She had 24 offspring from various sires including a Polled Shottle bull which we tried to send to AI, but couldn’t attract any interest. Penn-Dell Holsteins (Jay Houser, Jim and Teresa Houser, Charlotte Aumen) have several members of this family, including Frith-jof Rbrst Valntin-Red*PO (VG-88), Penn-Dell Lou Velvet-Red*PO (VG-86), and Frith-jof R Valencia-Red-ET*PC (VG-87.) Valencia’s daughter Penn-Dell Magna Violet-Red*PP (VG-86) exported embryos to Matt Seeliger of Westdama Dairy in Australia, resulting in four heifer calves. Some have had success in shows, and some are Homozygous Polled. Genomic testing our herd in 2011 helped to identify superior animals to work with. KHW Kite Advent-Red-ET and Apples Absolute-Red-ET worked well for us. Frithjof Advent Rosalyn*PC (VG-87), was flushed to Absolute. Daughters were Frith-jof Absolute Roma-ET (EX-93), Frithjof Ab Riviera-Red-ET*PC (EX-91), and Frith-jof Absolute P Rio-ET*PC (VG-87). James and Pamela Morse of Troy, PA purchased Riviera for their daughter, Cecilia. Riviera’s Sandy-Valley Colt P-Red-ET daughter, Orcherdhill Colt Rory-Red*PO, was the first Polled Junior All-American Red & White in 2012. Rio’s Colt P daughter, Frith-jof Colt Ruby PPRed (VG-87) was the number one GTPI Homozygous Polled Red & White female in 2012, and was sold to Regancrest Farm, along with Rio.

continued from page 6 We decided to work with Vicky’s daughter, Frith-jof Advent Vixen-Red (EX-90). We bred her to MD-Valleyvue Christian-ET to improve TPI, then flushed that heifer to Colt P, resulting in a Red *PC heifer. We felt the only way to make enough progress in Polled and Red would be to cross out and use a high genomic young sire, regardless of whether it was Polled or Red. I selected Seagull-Bay Supersire-ET, who stood out above the rest of available young sires, and this heifer was also *PC *RC. The next flush was to Ladys-Manor Olympian, resulting in Frith-jof Olympia Visa P-ET*RC (VG-85) TPI +2355. Fortunately, the Polled and Red traits transmitted well over several generations. Visa is now housed at Davi-Le-Ray Farm, the commercial farm of our friends, Chris and Martha Young. Zimmerview Lucky PPRed-ET was an ideal match to improve calving ease, milk and components, and DPR, while maintaining good type with the chance of Homozygous Polled. We used sexed semen for the resulting calf: Frith-jof Luk Violet PP-Red! Violet was previously the #1 GTPI Red PP female, and she is also A2A2! We’re awaiting the results of RZG testing to determine the embryo interest in Violet. She’s the complete package, with over 1,000 lbs. milk, positive % components, PL +7.5, DPR +1.1, UDC +2.42, FLC +1.48, no negative recessives, robot-friendly udders, and more than 140 points over PA GTPI! Homozygous Polled calves are quite rare, especially with the combination of Red and A2A2. We’ve been very blessed with Violet, born on the day we laid my mother to rest. Needless to say, Zimmer-

view Lucky PP-Red is one of our new favorite sires! Violet is off to a great start, and when she’s ready to flush and breed, the pool of PP, Red, PC, RC and high GTPI bulls available will be much more elite. Violet has great potential to make superior *PC or *PP offspring by doubling up on the traits she excels at, and has the advantage that all her offspring will be at least *PC and *RC. There may come a point in the near future, as more elite bulls and females are Polled, that animals who don’t carry it will be at a disadvantage. Violet’s offspring won’t have that worry! The gap is definitely closing between the GTPI of the top animals overall and the top Polled animals. We purchased Ms Fantasy E Fantastic-P-ET *RC *PP TPI +1902 in 2013 and did several flushes, including one to EDG Rubicon-ET. One of those calves was Frith-jof R Finesse P-ET *RC, GTPI+2454. Dam and daughter were sold at the 2015 Eastern Elite sale to Ken and Marilyn Umble of Glen Valley Farm. What a smart buy! Fantastic is now EX-90, and Finesse is now GP-83 with a Jedi daughter, Glen-Valley Jedi Fantasy *PC, GTPI +2671. This is an example of the #PolledProgress you can make when breeding with a Homozygous Polled bull, heifer, or cow! Lots of farmers love cattle that look good, but ALL farmers love those healthy, fertile cows that help pay the bills!

TOG Listowel Obsidian P from Select Sires is on my watch list. One of my long term goals is to have a completely Polled show string that is competitive on the state and regional level. Short term goal is Foxy is entered in the 2018 Jersey Jug-hoping to get her there and for some good exposure at the All American Jersey Show in Louisville to keep building on her story. I would really like to see someone come up with a Homozygous Polled bull that has a good combination of type, components, and milk with great health traits. Actually, what I would really like is a Polled fancy show bull, but that is a small portion of the semen market I realize. (I am working on it with my small herd, but it sure is easier when you have more than 20 breeding age animals.) I think a bull like this would check a lot of boxes for most people and be popular. A2A2 would be icing on the cake. I am not talking about extreme high genomic numbers, but a good all-around bull like Oliver-P only Homozygous from a solid cow family that would get a lot of use. I really think that PP should stand for Pretty and Productive as well as Homozygous Polled. Oliver-P has really brought Polled to the forefront in Jerseys because he is a great combination of milk and type, his daughters are beautiful-uddered cows that work hard. I really hope breeders start crossing those Oliver-P daughters with some of the Polled bulls available out there and we can

keep making more Polled progress as a breed. Homozygous Polled can put you in the driver’s seat in a big way! With the huge popularity of Oliver-P and record setting semen sales from him, this means that there should be huge amount of offspring from him in the next year or so. Of these offspring, half of them should be Polled. It is my hope that breeders will keep moving forward with breeding these offspring to Polled bulls as there are a lot more higher quality polled bulls available at this time and why wouldn’t want to go with a 75% chance of a Polled calf rather than a 50% chance. Instead of breeding Polled back to horned and keeping your fingers crossed that you’ll get a Polled calf out of a really nice bull. With my Homozygous Polled cow, I can now go in any direction I want and know that I am guaranteed to have a Polled calf. I think in the past, due to the limited number of Polled bulls that met breeders expectations for production and type, it was hard to make a good mating between two Polled animals with confidence of the outcome. I think this paradigm has shifted considerably due in part to more availability of Polled bloodlines through genomic testing, awareness of animal welfare pressures, and being cost efficient. Polled animals take an item off everybody’s “to do” list from day one. And who isn’t looking for one less item to take off their cost of production and increase their bottom line. Polled just makes good business sense if you ask me!

National Dairy Shrine has the privilege to honor five individuals for their lifetime service with the coveted Pioneer Award. These gentlemen are outstanding representatives of the dairy industry. Their recognition as Pioneers of the National Dairy Shrine only adds to the honor roll of leaders in the National Dairy Hall of Fame. One of this year’s honorees is the well-known cattle breeder David Burket. David from East Freedom, Pennsylvania, has dedicated over 60 years to the development and promotion of quality breeding, becoming an internationally recognized leader in developing polled and red & white Holstein cattle. David took over the family farm in 1946 at the age of 14 after his father suffered an injury. What started out as a fringe area of interest to some in the dairy industry, the incorporation of polled genetics has now exploded into mainstream application, from David’s work and effort in promoting the benefits of polled cattle to dairy breeders around the globe. Burket is one of the first breeders to place a polled Registered Holstein sire into an Artificial Insemination (AI) organization in 1975, when Burket Falls ABC became available through American Breeders Service (ABS). Today, researchers have determined that about two-thirds of the present polled Holstein population trace to this bull. Several more polled sires have followed to widen the Burket Falls influence. David, his wife Betty, and their sons continue to own and operate Burket Falls Holsteins, which was started in 1960. Burket Falls has developed outstanding genetics over the years, including red & white and black & white Holsteins and breed changing polled cattle. Over 150 Burket Falls bred animals have been classified Excellent. Over 65 have been designated Gold Medal Dams and Dams of Merit as well as numerous All-American nominations in both black and white and red and white Holsteins. The number of cattle sold to fellow breeders has only built the legacy of Burket Falls’ genetics. David has also found the time to serve his community and industry. David has been active in his church as well as serving the Pennsylvania Holstein Association in various roles for over 30 years. Burket served on numerous National Breed Association committees as well as the Pennsylvania Dairyman’s Association and PA Farm and Home Administration. David has been recognized as a Pennsylvania Holstein Hall of Fame member, a Larry Moore Distinguished Breeder by the National Red & White Dairy Cattle Association and a recipient of the Chesapeake Bay Clean Water Farm Award. Burket will receive the 2018 Pioneer Recognition at the annual National Dairy Shrine Awards Banquet on Thursday, October 4th in Madison, Wisconsin. A Focus on International POLLED

Wulfstock Farm - Guido Simon - Germany Our Wulfstock Farm is located one hour east of the city Dortmund near the center of Germany in a slightly hilly area called "Sauerland." Since 2005, we produce organic milk, the 80 cows are on 24h pasture for 8 months a year, but the barn is always accessible to make our AMS work. 80% of the herd is Holstein (30% of them Red & White) and 20% Jersey. I try to breed some “funny” colors like lineback or belted, but those are just a handful. I have been breeding for Polled since 1998. I saw for the first time ever a Polled bull in the US Top 100 TPI list, Burket Falls Polled Plus P-RC. At that time (the 1990s), we bred in Germany only for production and the cows got worse and worse in my opinion. So I thought, if breeding is useless anyhow I could also breed for traits like Polled, what was in the official thinking a "useless trait" not many people even knew about. Around 2010, when dehorning by farmers was prohibited in the German organic farming, things changed rapidly. I love the truly balanced cow as you get it if you work with Bill Weeks' aAa system. From 2000 to 2010, I worked as a aAa analyzer myself. And I like well-proven bulls with daughter proofs at least in 3rd lactation and high productive life. My “horny” cows are all mated by Polled bulls, but the Polled cows are inseminated by non-Polled bulls again. So I have some Polled Ramosses, O-Mans and Mascols. From the 10 doses of Polled Plus P, I got 3 Polled females, one was a poor cow, the second I sold and she made a good placing in the National Show, and the third developed into a cow that had quite some influence in the German Polled Holsteins - Wulfstock PolledPlus MabelPoll P-RC VG-87. She had many sons in AI, one of them the #1 Polled bull in the first days of genomics, Wulfstock O-Man O-Magic P-RC. Her daughter SHB Mr. Sam Mrs Poll P-RC was sold to Hubertus Diers (Prisma Gen) and is the mother of the heavily used PP bull in Germany, Laptop PP. I started to breed Polled into Wulfstock Mabelpoll from the wellknown German cow family of Wulfstock O-Man Magic-O P-RC Blackstar Mabel VG-89 4th lactation EX and this family has the most members in our barn. We also have Polled descendents from Tirsvad Luke Classic EX-90, Zimview Enhancer Gina VG-88 and Heatherstone-V Leader Hosta-Red VG-85. The Polled animals we are currently working with

include Wulfstock Lawn Boy Milu P EX, Wulfstock O-Man Magic-O P-RC EX and Wulfstock Honour Kiona P EX (Jersey). For Holsteins, we have daughters by Lawn Boy P and his sons Laron P, Label P and Raspberry Lou P. We also have daughters of Fison PP, Raeman P (France), History PP, Relief P, Mitey P, Rocco P, Toubib P, Sellabull PP (US), Remake P, Ohio P, Mirador P, Lou P, Beamer P, Dellboy P, Android P (Germany). From our homebred Polled bulls, we

have daughters of Wulfstock O-Magic P RC, Wulfstock Jelly P (Göpel). For Jerseys, our Polled animals are sired by Motivation PP, Miracle PP, Dallas PP, Honour P and from our homebred Jersey bulls, Wulfstock Eclip P Wulfstock Honour Kiona P EX (GGI), Wulfstock Trenton P (K.I. Samen). Currently, we are using Linedancer P (KI Samen) and again some Lawn Boy P and Polled Plus P (US), History PP, Rex PP You can get Polled bulls from everywhere now, but nearly all of them are only genomically proven, I still miss all-time great proven bulls like Lawn Boy P who could “play with the big boys” in his time. I would like to see more Polled Lineback Holsteins and perhaps a Polled Dutch Belted one. The future is Polled, no doubt. In 25 years we will have a worldwide ban for dehorning and we have to take care of some Polled Lineback Ramos daughter bloodlines with horns for the anthroposophical community. I heard that they try to just cut the Polled gene into clones from superstars like Bookem. Nice for the Polled gene, but bad for my fun as a breeder. With genomics, this fun dropped heavily, because without ET (as an organic breeder) I can’t keep the pace anymore. If they now start breeding with CRISPR/Cas, I am out even more. So my farm will end as a kind of genetic reserve habitat - perhaps one day they’ll need it again.

Polled: The Next Frontier The very first World Dairy Expo issue of the #PolledPlace magazine was in 2014 with only 36 Homozygous Polled Bulls (Holstein & Jersey) included in the #PolledPlacings listings. Today, there are 60, YES 60 Homozygous Polled bulls to select from in several different breeds. Congratulations to the breeders and AI companies for providing a great list of bulls - both Heterozygous and Homozygous Polled and thank you for supporting this issue with your advertising and editorial! I am very proud to share this with visitors during the week of World Dairy Expo along with the #PolledPromoters Directory. As mentioned in a couple articles, Polled has entered quite a few herds thanks to Burket-Falls. Congratulations to David Burket on being named to the National Dairy Hall of Fame! Polled Testing There are 2 independent origins of polled, one found in Holstein-Friesian and Jersey breeds (Pf), the other in many European breeds of Celtic origin (Pc) such as Angus, Blonde dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Aquitaine, Dexter, Limousin, Charolais, and Hereford, among others. Polledness is dominant; a polled animal can have one or two copies of the gene. All offspring of a bull with 2 copies of polled (homozygous) will be polled. Genetic testing is a cost-effective means to determine if a polled animal has 1 or 2 copies of the gene. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory offers a test for the polled gene to assist breeders in selecting cattle that have 2 copies of Polled gene. H/H HORNED. No copies of either Polled molecular marker are present. Pf/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker is present. At least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pf/Pf POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled. Pc/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker is present. At least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pc/Pc POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled. Pc/Pf POLLED.
