Breeder Perspectives on POLLED

This magazine was developed for those passionate about Polled! In the #PolledPanel feature of #PolledPlace, breeders have the opportunity to share their perspective on Polled. Thank you to Levi Martin for sharing your Polled story and views on the future of Polled Holsteins!

A Focus on International POLLED

Redmaw Holsteins - Courtney & Jared Ireland - Australia We are located in Lockington, North Victoria in Australia about two and a half hours north of Melbourne, not far from the Murray River. We run about 250ha of which about 200ha is lazer graded out for use with flood irrigation. Growing mainly rye grass and clovers during colder months and topping up with cereal hay if needed and switching to lucerne and sorghums into summer when it heats up with rye grass silage available during hot afternoons to keep the cows eating. Temperatures can range from 45 degrees Celsius in summer and just nudge into the minus 1 or 2 area during winter. We milk 400 to 420 cows and usually have 250+ head of youngstock on farm as well. Calving in three batches a year with bigger mobs in March/April and August/September and 40 odd cows in November, trying to take full advantage of when the most green feed is available for grazing. Milking is done in a 44 unit rotary, twice a day with two full-time staff and one part-time milker. I got interested in Polled genetics off the back of a bad habit I have of really liking Red & White Holsteins. Lawn Boy P was always a bull I wanted to use, but I just never got around to it for one reason or another, so when Tiger-Lily Ladd-P-Red became available in Australia, I got 5 straws and decided to flush an old VG-87 Red GGFABER daughter that I had. That was how it all started! Unfortunately that flush ended in two Polled bulls and one horned heifer, but I used the remaining straws on some other cows and scored a Polled Red & White. This cow is now on her second lactation with two Red & White Polled daughters herself. Now with all of the higher genomic Polled bulls around, we are also using them on the rest of the herd and not just the Red & White cows. My main criteria is that they still have to bring traits to the table that I need for the herd to move forward genetically, and we still use the odd Red & White bull here and there, and if I can find one that is Polled, it is a big bonus. Our first Polled cow, as mentioned above, is sired by Tiger Lily Ladd-P-Red. Her name is Redmaw Ladd Jaffa-P. She scored GP-81 as a 2-Yr-Old calving in at 1-10, but had a pretty hard go of it, so I was just happy she got back in calf straight away. We now have Red and Polled daughters of her by Poppe Snowstorm and Sunquest Barcuda-PP. Our best Polled animal is Redmaw Powerball Lautamay-P. She is a Powerball x Redmaw Davinci Lautamay GP-84-2Y

x Mayfield x Comestar Lautamai Man Oman. She has a BPI of +262 (Aust index), making her one of the highest Polled animals and a GTPI of +2456. We have flushed her twice. Once to Delta, which are due November 2018 and the other flush to SSI Exactly Percy-P. She has a Polled full brother at Genetics Australia called LOGANX-P and a half brother by SSI Montross Jett called LAUTETT, so hopefully we can score something nice to get the next generation into AI as well. So far, we have bred Polled into the Lautamay (Comestar L’s) family, the Janea/Jazz/Jaffa family, which all go back to Beshore Rotate Buppilyn Jody and have produced many top genomic male and females here in Australia. Also a handful of other families that have one or two Polled ones that we will continue to work. Courtney’s Dad has a heifer here we look after for him that is a Polled Jedi x Modern P x Ladd P x Gen-I-Beq Snowman Summer. Currently the bulls with Polled daughters in our herd are from of mixture of US and German bulls including Tiger-Lily Ladd-P, Kerndtway Eraser-P, View-Home Powerball-P, BG Nick PP ( Ohio Style son from a full sister to Eraser-P), Keilaglen Pollpower (Aust born Powerball son) and some Sunquest Barcuda PP calves on the ground the last couple of months. We are currently still expecting some more Barcuda PP, and the first pregnancies are due from our young bull LOGANX-P in the next couple of weeks. Percy-P GGI Paletti-PP and Wilder Born-P calves are due in March/April 2019. For our current joining, we are using some more LOGANX-P and some more GGI Paletti-PP (Powerball x Special Effect from the Des-Y-Gen Planet Silk family). I think going forward for Polled Holsteins in Australia, the key will be to find some outcross to Powerball-P as he seems to be doing a really good job at breeding on and will soon enough be in the majority of top BPI Polled animals, but I guess that is the fun of trying to incorporate a gene like Polled into the gene pool. Probably he most exciting thing for us now is creating Polled animals from top proven and genomic horned sires over some of Polled females to create different Polled genes, oh, and of course for me to keep my bad habit of Red & Whites going whilst adding Polled in as well.

Polled Testing There are 2 independent origins of polled, one found in Holstein-Friesian and Jersey breeds (Pf), the other in many European breeds of Celtic origin (Pc) such as Angus, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Dexter, Limousin, Charolais, and Hereford, among others. Polledness is dominant; a polled animal can have one or two copies of the gene. All offspring of a bull with 2 copies of polled (homozygous) will be polled. Genetic testing is a cost-effective means to determine if a polled animal has 1 or 2 copies of the gene. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory offers a test for the polled gene to assist breeders in selecting cattle that have 2 copies of Polled gene. H/H HORNED. #PolledProgress in 2018 As we deal with the stresses and challenges of today's dairy industry, it is a positive light to focus on the #PolledProgress that has been made this past year. 2018 began with the highest Polled Holstein heifer at +2868 GTPI - that's 171 points higher than the top heifer at the beginning of 2017...#PolledProgress! The highest Homozygous Polled Holstein at the beginning of 2018 was at +2668 GTPI - that's 89 points higher...#PolledProgress! A Polled Intermediate Champion of World Dairy Expo, now that's exciting...#PolledProgress!!! The advancements that can be made in just one generation with this dominant trait continue. Yes, Polled is a DOMINANT trait and it shows up right away after just one mating, no waiting around for a recessive "carrier" trait to come through. *PO = Polled Observed *PC = Heterozygous Polled Confirmed (tested for Polled) *PP = Homozygous Polled (100% of their offspring will be Polled) Polled bulls are being used on some of the very best genetics around the world.
