Sonia Kilvington is a journalist, short story writer, poet and novelist. She currently published in the international noir collection Exiles, as well as being a regular contributor to Contemporary Literary Horizon; her poetry translated into Romanian. She has recently published her second novel in the DI Flynn series, Buried in the Hills; an exciting murder mystery set in Cyprus, and is now writing the final part of the DI Flynn trilogy; The island of Lost Content. Miranda Tringis, Herbalist
Mranda has studied western herbalism and is specialized in Mediterranean medical herbalism. In 2012, she opened her botanical park, CyHerbia, to the public. On site she produces organic herbal teas, tinctures, salves and other herbal products. Miranda has written educational programs for schools on the subject of herbs and is a regular guest on a national television magazine show. She also teaches workshops and gives presentations about herbs in Cyprus and abroad. Миранда Трингис посвятила много времени изучению западных направлений науки о целебных травах с уклоном на средиземноморские растения. В 2012 году она открыла для посетителей свой ботанический парк CyHerbia. Здесь она занимается выращиванием органического чая, производством растворов, мазей и других средств на основе трав. Marcos Komodromos, is an Assistant Professor at the University of Nicosia in the Department of Communications School of Humanities, Social Sciences & Law. He has extensive experience in Public Relations and in the New Media, Management and Internal Communication and delivers professional training to organizations. He is also a consultant in these areas for many organizations. Marcos is a Chartered PR practitioner and a Chartered Trainer in the area of Public Relations. As from 2003 he has his own Radio show as a radio producer and his own Social Media Show on television.

Ricardo Fernandes
Ricardo Fernandes has enjoyed a very impressive international football career. Originally from Portugal, where he was once signed by legendary manager, José Mourinho, he has played for teams in Israel and the Ukraine, as well as four different teams in Cyprus. While currently back in Cyprus and on loan to Nicosia based team, AC Omonia, he has speaks to Status about the highlights of his career, including that very special UEFA Champions League win with Porto in 2004. Towering above the vibrant, multicultural Brazilian city of Reo de Janeiro, Corcovado Mountain is situated within the Tijuca Forest National Park. The park is a paradise of lush vegetation and is home to a wide variety of wild animals. The name Corcovado is reference to the mountains unique and highly unusual hunchback shape. Most notably the mountain is the foothold of Christ the Redeemer, the iconic, globally recognised statue of Jesus presiding over the city of Rio de Janeiro with his arms outstretched. This beautiful statue, which is 30 meters high and is constructed from soapstone, enjoyed the reputation of being the biggest Art Deco statue in the world until 2010. Located in Venezuela’s Canaima National Park, Angel Falls is the highest and most spectacular waterfalls in the world. At a height of At 979 meters and with an uninterrupted drop of 807 meters, Angel Falls is sixteen times the height of Niagara Falls! Unlike many other natural wonders of the world, Angel Falls was discovered quite recently in 1935. Aviator Jimmie Angels encountered them by accident when his plane crashed on the top of Auyantepui, the mountain from which the falls cascade. Hence his amazing discovering was named after him! The sheer beauty and power of the falls should never be underestimated, as under the right conditions, visitors can feel water droplets permeating the air from a distance of up to one kilometer.

Are we travelling to the same place? For many travellers Copacabana is associated exclusively with Rio de Janeiro, that teaming multicultural hotspot of dance and Latin passion. But today I’m travelling to a very different Copacabana - to a small town in Bolivia on the shore of Lake Titicaca. It’s the sacred home of the Incas and the mythical birth place of creation.

La Virgen de la Candelaria
Copacabana is a quiet, rural town where fishing and agriculture are the mainstays of life. It’s a place where languages, traditions, beliefs and unique customs are intermingled in feasts and rituals, music and dances, and the preservation of its sacred places. Like many a world weary traveller, I am visiting Copacabana for one of its sacred festivals. I am praying that the ‘Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria’, will revive my vitality.
Does she have a secret past?
The town is small but interesting, and today its most famous resident awaits me at the Basilica of Our Lady of Copacabana. I pick up the leaflet of many languages and find the famous Virgin shrine was carved by famous religious sculptor, Francisco Tito Yupanqui in 1592. I am surprised to find that she is also known as The Dark Virgin of the Lake, as well as the more respectable, Patroness of Bolivia. Why a Dark Virgin - does she have a secret past?

Из путеводителя, отпечатанного на нескольких языках, я узнаю, что знаменитый храм Богородицы был создан при участии известного церковного скульптора Франциско Тито Юпанки в 1592 году. С удивлением узнаю, что здесь также в ходу названия “Темная Богородица Озера” и “Покровительница Боливии”. Почему “Темная Богородица”? У нее что – какое-то тайное прошлое? S | 69

Miraculous connection
I find out that, ‘The Virgin’ is adored for a series of local miracles; and when I dare to touch her stone dress in a state of reverence, my mind spins back in time, to that moment when my fingers touched the rock at the site of the of the crucifixion in Jerusalem. The connection feels real and my impression is reinforced in the streets outside, as I blink away the blinding light to discover from my guide book, that the town has recreated its own journey of the Stations of the Cross. As I walk through the town’s homage to the Via Dolorosa, my mind pierces through its geographical restraints, and these two distant places seem to merge, across time and space.

They say that there is only one spot worthy of an Andean sunset; that should be experienced from a small boat, afloat on Lake Titicaca. To the Incas, the lake is believed to be the point of all creation. In Incan mythology, the god Viracocha arose from the lake to create the sun, stars and also the first people. This place was incredibly important to them, and so I head off in the direction of the lake’s most significant island, the Isla del Sol (Island of the Sun), home of the Incan sun god Inti, who rescued the world from darkness and fear, according to a popular myth.

Watching the sun set over the Isla del Sol, turns out to be a more magical experience than I could ever have imagined. I watch in awe as the sun bathes the sacred Andean mountains in bright colour; its fiery reds and burnt oranges blazing through the darkening sky, shimmering and reflecting their mystical light into the darkest depths of the lake; before melting into the horizon.
Isla de la Luna
Travelling back to the shore of Copacabana, I am guided by the light of the moon, past the sacred, ‘Isla de la Luna’ (Island of the Moon), the legendary home of the Inca goddess Mama Quilla. During Incan times, the island was home to a society of chosen women, known as the ‘Virgins of the Sun,’ who lived and worked like nuns. They wove clothes made from alpaca wool and performed ceremonies dedicated to the sun. I wish I could have seen them. 72 | S

Во времена расцвета цивилизации инков на острове обитала община избранных женщин, которая именовалась “Девы Солнца”, они вели монашеский образ жизни и постоянно трудились: вязали одежду из шерсти альпаки и поклонялись солнцу. Вот бы хоть раз на них взглянуть… В воздухе парил самолет и аромат новой любви, а на губах было красное вино. За бортом бушевала весна.

The sunken temple
As my boat reaches a sacred place surrounded by the mountains, I pause for a while, gazing at their intense reflected beauty. I want to preserve this perfectly peaceful moment, experiencing it fully, with my mind and soul. I close my eyes and drift off to sleep, the water lapping gently under the boat; until murmured voices invade my dreams, from the temple in the depths of the lake; they are visitors from that sacred place which Inca spirits return to, after death. I listen to their many stories of life in Copacabana; tales of farming, fishing and festivals, and traditions passed down from one generation to another.

When I wake it is already light and in the distance I can see the town shaking off its slumber. It is already the day of the festival, the ‘La Virgen de la Candelaria’, and it’s now time prepare for the most special event of the year! I feel the hum of activity, vibrating from across the water. It rouses me from my lethargy; the steady beat of its Latin heart, echoing on the breeze. It may seem stranger than fiction, but on this mysterious lake, I swear I can hear the exotic voice of Copacabana, calling out my name…

Наступил день фестиваля Ла Вирген де ла Канделария – пора готовиться к самому торжественному событию года! Всеобщее возбуждение витает в атмосфере и резонирует в воде. Я пробуждаюсь от летаргии. Размеренный ритм латинского сердца отдается в мелодии бриза. Все это может показаться неправдоподобнее фантастики, но я могу поклясться, что на этом загадочном озере мне слышатся зовущие меня по имени экзотические голоса Копакабаны… 74 | S

Brian was born in Los Angeles. He spent much of his youth disassembling things with many parts and amusing himself making electrical circuits. Brian studied software engineering at the University of Colorado, and after graduating moved to Paris on a whim. He planned to stay for a summer, but ended up living there for ten years... eventually earning a masters degree in telecommunications. Working in France, he was the lead prototype engineer on a mobile satellite communications system that later became Sirius Radio. None of this had anything to do with photography. His left brain flourished; his right brain languished. One day, Brian picked up a friend’s Mamiya camera. Resisting the urge to disassemble it, he decided to make some pictures instead. The resulting images were published, and a new career direction was born. His work has since been featured in magazines such as GEO and Conde Nast Traveler. Брайан родился в Лос-Анджелесе. Oregano, thyme, marjoram and hyssop are all vying for our attention and the herb garden is awash with colour and fragrance. But nothing beats the intoxicating aroma and the lilac, blue and purple hues of lavender, which has just started to bloom now. Taking a stroll in the lavender lined gardens, brushing against the plants and releasing its aroma lifts the spirits and dispels all thoughts and worries of the day. The climate in Cyprus is very suitable for growing the most fragrant of all 450 varieties of lavender, Lavandula Angustifolia. This variety has the most distinctive floral note and is considered the most valuable for use in perfumery, as well as the most therapeutic. Lavender is one of the most versatile herbs, with a long list of health benefits. It is best known as a relaxant for the nervous system, effective in stressrelief, anxiety, tension and headaches. It is also a powerful antiseptic, antibacterial, analgesic and expectorant, relieving coughs, colds and fever. We can make a relaxing tea from the dried flower petals to benefit from its therapeutic properties. To make a lavender tea, simply put half a teaspoon of dried lavender flowers in your cup, pour boiling water onto it and let steep for 5 minutes. Then strain and drink. for sweetening you may add a teaspoon of honey or a pinch of stevia. 82 | S

С 14 по 29 июня сад органических трав Cyherbia в Авгору проводит ежегодный лавандовый фестиваль. Воздавая должное королеве всех трав, в саду и чайном павильоне ожидается настоящее буйство пурпурно-сиреневого. For external use the essential oil is a must have in every home. It is one of the few essential oils that can be used neat on the skin. To dispel a headache you simply rub one drop of it onto the temples for instant relief. Lavender oil is very helpful in acne. It gets rid of spots and blackheads without drying out the skin. Later, during the first World War he successfully treated wounded soldiers with it. Lavender’s uses are not restricted to tea and aromatherapy, the fresh or dried flowers can also be used in the kitchen! At the herb garden we make lavender cakes and cookies, refreshing ice tea and lemonade, even lavender ice cream and liqueur! From the 14th until the 29th of June Cyherbia Organic Herb Gardens in Avgorou will host its annual Lavender Festival. Celebrating the queen of all herbs, the gardens and tea room will be awash with purples and lilacs. Visitors can take part in the processing of lavender, witness the extraction of lavender essential oil, and taste the special lavender drinks and cookies mentioned above while relaxing in the cool shade of the tea room overlooking the gardens. Craft workshops will be held every day, and of course there will be a vast range of organic lavender products on display in the herb shop. The Lavender Festival truly is a unique experience. Ricardo Ribeiro Fernandes has enjoyed a very impressive international football career. Originally from Portugal, where he was once signed by legendary manager, José Mourinho, he has played for teams in Israel and the Ukraine, as well as four different teams in Cyprus. While currently back in Cyprus and on loan to Nicosia based team, AC Omonia, he has spoken to Status about the highlights of his career, including that very special UEFA Champions League win with Porto in 2004!

Your youth career began at CD Aves training academy at aged nine. Did you feel it offered adequate preparation for a career in international football?
«My father was the one who was always keeping me on my feet and controlling all of my steps.» Благодаря отцу и его неусыпному контролю я всегда твердо стоял на ногах. Думаю, да – это помогло моему стремительному развитию как игрока и личности, ведь нас учили не только футболу, но и общению, а опытные наставники помогали нам расти в личном плане. Очень важно с детских лет учиться преодолевать давление, впитывать все полезное, что передает опытный тренер, который зачастую сам поиграл в футбол, и у нас есть возможность перенять его опыт, которым он с удовольствием делится.
На раннем этапе у тебя был наставник, человек, который помогал в развитии твоей карьеры?
I think it was fine, it helped me a lot to grow as a player and as a person, because your learning is not just about football, it is also about the people around you, and who are helping you to grow as a person. It has an important side to it; learning to deal with the pressure very young, also the experiences that the coaches bring to us, as normally they are ex-footballers, and so we know about their experiences, and they pass those on to us.

In the early years did you have a mentor - was there anyone who you felt helped your career?

It was always my father; I think we shared the dream, me and him, since the beginning. He was always there. I think from ages nine to fifteen; I don’t think he missed a single game! My mother and my father they always followed us everywhere and at sixteen years old I was thinking of giving up on football; my father was the one that put me in order, and told me he was not losing his time with me, to come so near, and then I give up on everything. He was the one who was always keeping me on my feet and controlling all of my steps.

So far, what do you feel has been the highlight of your international career? It’s very clear; 2003/4 at Porto when the team won the Champions League. It’s something that every player dreams of achieving. I was lucky that I was in a great team with a great coach and great players. We managed to win! I believe that Champions League is the highlight of every footballer’s career. Everyone wants to play in that competition and I was lucky to play in it. I was lucky that I was in a team that had the quality to win it. So it’s something I will never forget, that’s for sure.
After an impressive first division debut at Gil Vicente, you were signed by José Mourinho for his FC Porto side in Portugal; did this experience live up to your expectations? There was a part of me which was disappointed as I would have liked to have participated more in the games. I was not a regular in the first eleven, but on the other hand, even with those circumstances, it was an amazing experience because I think I was working with the best manager, ever, José Mourinho, and some of the best players in the word. And so, I was very 92 | S

grateful I had the chance to be there with those players and those coaches.
APOEL FC was your first major club in Cyprus, where you quickly became a crowd favourite, by helping them to win the domestic cup. Was this one of the highlights of your career? Yes, for sure! APOEL was probably some of the happiest moments I had in my career. Everything worked out perfectly from the first minute and we had two years, were we achieved good results; and personally I think I had a great relationship with the fans and the support of the fans was amazing. So I believe it was one of the best moments of my career.
After a spell at Ukrainian club, Metalurh Donetsk, you returned to Cyprus and signed to Anorthosis Farmagusta FC, but left six months into a three year contract; was this a difficult time for you? It was for sure, a very difficult time for me. I left as an APOEL player, and I came back to Cyprus to play for another team, Anorthosis. It was a difficult time for both the club and for the team, and unfortunately the problems which the club was facing, affected me. I wasn’t happy and both sides decided that the best thing to do was to break our agreement, after six months. It wasn’t easy; but in football this is not unusual. In football; today you can be the best, and tomorrow they will consider you the worst!

Лично мне представляется, что у нас были замечательные отношения с болельщиками, а их поддержка была фантастической. Так что я определенно считаю этот период одним из самых удачных за всю карьеру.

Трудное было время? Безусловно, это был сложный период. Я уезжал из «АПОЭЛ», а вернулся, чтобы выступать за «Анортосис». И клуб и вся команда переживали трудности, и, к сожалению, проблемы клуба сказались и на мне лично. Меня это не могло устраивать, и спустя полгода обе стороны решили, что лучше будет расстаться. Это было нелегко, но в футболе подобное не редкость. Бывает, что сегодня ты на гребне, а завтра тебя уже не берут в расчет! S | 93
At Cypriot club Doxa Katokopias, you performed an amazing Scorpion kick which helped your team draw against Alki Larnaca FC. It has had thousands of views on Youtube. How did this happen? It was a decision I made at that moment, and it went right! It was just instinctive; it was a big success in Cyprus last year! (he replies smiling).
Having had an impressive international career, are you now involved in any youth coaching or mentoring? I am following the Arsenal Soccer Academy of Nicosia, because I have my son playing there, and so I am there with them almost every day. I follow the trainings, and I participate a little bit in the life of the Academy. It’s something which I like to do.
As someone who has had a successful career in an extremely demanding and competitive sport, what does Status mean to you? I think that Status is something that everybody tries to achieve, through their work. In the end it is the result of everything that you did in your life that brings you to a different level, and that shows the quality of your work, because you cannot achieve status, if you didn’t achieve great things in your work.
Играя за кипрскую «Докса» из Катокопии ты забил невероятный гол так называемым “ударом скорпиона”, и он стал решающим в достижении ничейного результата в игре с «Алки» из Ларнаки. Этот момент на Youtube уже просмотрели тысячи пользователей. Как это у тебя получилось? Решение принималось мгновенно, и все вышло как нельзя лучше! Это был инстинктивный порыв и получилось так, что для всего Кипра это стало чуть ли не событием года! (улыбается).
После такой успешной карьеры ты как-то участвуешь в тренерской деятельности или воспитании юных талантов? Сейчас я пристально слежу за работой футбольной академии «Арсенал» в Никосии, потому что там тренируется мой сын, так что я провожу там почти каждый день: наблюдаю за тренировочным процессом и немного участвую в жизни академии. Мне это нравится.
Что для тебя, как человека, которому посчастливилось добиться успеха в нелегком виде спорта с жесточайшей конкуренцией, значит статус? Думаю, что всем хочется достичь какого-то определенного статуса, и многие к нему стремятся. В конечном итоге все предпринимаемые в жизни усилия выводят человека на какой-то новый уровень, свидетельствующий о качестве проделанной работы, потому что определенного статуса невозможно добиться без целенаправленных трудоемких усилий. When was Dr Zenonos - The Dental Clinic founded? In 1997, when the increasing needs of the patients and my continuous desire for progress and advancement, led to the creation of a new technological advanced clinic –in a new location - with specialist doctors in the field of dentistry in 2005. What were your expectations when you started? My goal was to create a friendly environment, taking dentistry to the “next level”. To me this means providing, exceptional quality of service and customer care and it was the way of forming the grounds of who we are and what we do. In my opinion, throughout the years, there was a period of “dental phobia”. This was something that I wanted to help people overcome. I thus began providing services beyond traditional practices, so that patients would be able to change their attitude regarding the dental experience, and in that way helping them “overcome the fear of the dentist”. What is the philosophy of the clinic? At Dr. Zenonos Dental Clinic, our passion is designing and creating beautiful and healthy smiles in a relaxing and state of the art environment. Our philosophy is, “Let your smile radiate in our hands!” Could you please refer to the contemporary medical methods and machinery you use today in dentistry? Dr. Zenonos – The Dental Clinic was always supporting the extent usage of technology in dental therapies. Our initial goal used to be and still is the continuous knowledge and updating on any dental issues that the world dental community presents. Thus, we intend to adapt all innovative methods and advancements in order to make out patients feel comfortable and satisfied. The numerous advantages and positive results, not only for the patient but also for the doctors are impressive. Therefore, by using contemporary technology such as the latest laser technology, digital panoramic x-rays, modern teeth whitening methods, fully equipped dental laboratory as well as robotic dentistry. Thus, is technology essential in the field of dentistry? In my opinion, I believe that all dentists should be kept informed constantly on the latest advancements of our field. Furthermore, through technology we can successfully develop effective and painless treatments, accuracy and better prosthetic restorations, avoidance of the dental wheel, optional usage of injection in several therapies and the reduction of sensitivity. What do we mean by the term “cosmetic dentistry”? The specific term might have been misunderstood or misinterpreted by the majority of people, as they believe that cosmetic dentistry only refers to the well-known term “smile makeover”. Obviously, “smile makeover” is part of “cosmetic dentistry” but “cosmetic dentistry” is more than a treatment. It can be applied in every dental treatment as for example in a filling. In other words, “cosmetic dentistry” does not correspond to a particular treatment but to the general approach of the dentist towards to a finer result.

Какие были Ваши ожидания в самом начале? Я задался целью воплотить в жизнь гостеприимную обстановку и вывести стоматологию на новый уровень. Для меня это означает высочайший уровень обслуживания и заботы о пациентах, и именно на этих постулатах и был основан наш подход к работе. Я вспоминаю, как на протяжении многих лет люди боялись дантистов как огня, и это даже превратилось к своего рода “фобию”. Я хотел изменить такое отношение. Добиться этого можно было только изменив общепринятую практику, чтобы пациенты постепенно избавились от боязни посещения стоматологического кабинета, но для этого нужно было помочь им преодолеть этот страх. В чем заключается философия клиники? В стоматологической клинике доктора Зиноноса наша особая страсть – создание красивой здоровой улыбки в успокаивающей и современной обстановке. Нашу философию я бы выразил так: “Дарить лучезарную улыбку!” Расскажите, пожалуйста, о применяемых современных методах лечения и стоматологическом оборудовании. Стоматологическая клиника доктора Зиноноса неизменно придерживается использования современных технологий в лечении зубов. Изначально мы определили свою цель как постоянное накопление знаний и глубокое изучение мировых направлений в стоматологии, и продолжаем придерживаться этого пути. Поэтому мы перенимаем все инновационные методы и достижения ради того, чтобы наши пациенты чувствовали себя комфортно и получали удовлетворение от лечения. Многочисленные достижения на пользу не только пациентов, но и докторов, впечатляют. Что означает термин “косметическая стоматология”? Многие зачастую неправильно понимают или неверно воспринимают это понятие, поскольку принято считать, что косметическая стоматология имеет отношение лишь к широко распространенному эффекту “восстановления улыбки”. Разумеется, “восстановление улыбки” – это часть косметической стоматологии, но при этом косметическая стоматология имеет гораздо более широкое значение, чем обычная косметическая процедура. Она может применяться при каждом стоматологическом лечении, например, в пломбировании. Другими словами, косметическая стоматология относится не к какому-то определенному лечению, а представляет собой общий подход к достижению наилучшего результата. S | 127

We decided to invest in educating the children, presenting to them the story “The adventures of Fearless Little Tooth”
What do we mean by the term “Smile Makeover”? The term «Smile Makeover» refers to the building /construction of broken or / cracked teeth as well as to the dichromate of teeth. It also refers to the restoration of the joint by leading the muscles to their proper position. Moreover, in order to perform a correct and successful “smile makeover” the dentist should perform an analysis of the smile taking into consideration the symmetry of the face. This treatment can be performed by choosing any combination of porcelain, resin, crowns, bridges and whitening. It is important to mention that due to the help of robotic dentistry, the Smile Makeover can be achieved after only one appointment. Could you please elaborate more on the usage of robotic dentistry? Robotic dentistry is actually a combination of machinery (scan camera – production unit ) which allows the dentist to create a ceramic restoration in only one session (one visit dentistry). It can be used in the creation of a hoop, bridges, and inlays/onlays. The results are impressive! It gives speed and accuracy to the procedure of prosthetic restoration and it does not use conventional patterns. Moreover through robotic dentistry, the restoration is aesthetically more advanced and accurate and there is an excellent colour match. Overall, with only one visit, the patient leaves the dentist, with a brand new smile. What is your vision? Our vision is to continue providing exceptional quality of service and customer care using the latest technology available, stating, with honesty, who we are and what we do. We also want to continue making people... smile. I was informed that your clinic participates in social contribution acts. Could you expand on the social contribution acts of Dr Zenonos The Dental Clinic? We decided to invest in educating the children, presenting to them the story “The adventures of Fearless Little Tooth”, which is dedicated to the children and their first teeth, how they lose them, their first visits to the Dentist, and the stories with fairies and pirates. The specific story has been written to teach children how to clean, and take care of their teeth. Today, our clinic team presents the story to Nursery and Primary schools in Limassol where the book is given to the children free of charge. It was a great pleasure however, when we were informed that our story, which was beautifully written by Costas Harpas, as well as the creative illustrations by Ane Merk member of Orb Communications Team, are nominated for the State Awards of Literature and Publishing 2013 organized by the Ministry of Education in Cyprus. Our team will continue the educational trip, because children must never stop believing in Fairies. Более того, при помощи роботизированной стоматологии восстановление имеет более привлекательный вид, а цвет эмали практически невозможно отличить. Таким образом, всего за один прием стоматолог создает совершенно новую улыбку. Каким Вы представляете будущее развитие? Мы планируем и дальше оказывать лечение и обслуживание клиентов на самом высоком уровне с использованием самых современных технологий, и всегда будем предельно честными с пациентами, подробно рассказывать им о том, что мы делаем. Мы хотим, чтобы люди не переставали улыбаться. Недавно мне стало известно, что Ваша клиника активно участвует в социальных акциях. Расскажите, пожалуйста, подробнее о социальном вкладе стоматологической клиники доктора Зиноноса. Мы решили инвестировать в детское образование и придумали специальную историю под названием “Приключения бесстрашного маленького зуба”, посвященную малышам и их первым зубкам, как они потом выпадают, как дети впервые приходят на прием к стоматологу, и в этой истории участвуют феи и пираты. Эта сказка была написана, чтобы научить детей, как правильно чистить зубы и ухаживать за ними. Сейчас сотрудники клиники представляют эту сказку в детских садах и начальных школах Лимассола и бесплатно раздают книгу детям. Мы неимоверно обрадовались, когда нам сообщили, что наша книга, прекрасно написанная Костасом Харпасом с мастерскими иллюстрациями Ане Мерек из Orb Communications, была номинирована на государственную премию Министерства образования Кипра по литературе и печатным изданиям за 2013 год. The Gentleman The skillful midfielder of the football grounds of England, ends up in Cyprus and plays in the Cyprus championship. At the end of his football career, he embarks on his coaching journey at the academies of APOEL, followed by the academies at Arsenal. Ara Bedrossian was born in Cyprus from Armenian parents and raised in London. Football is his entire life. From a very young age he plays football whenever and wherever he can. Although his father is a tennis champion in Cyprus, a sport not very popular in England, he doesn’t follow in his father’s footsteps. Moreover, he chooses to pursue the most popular sport in the world, that of football. At school, he is an average student but an excellent football player and that is why he decides to turn his passion into a profession. The most sentimental moment in his career is when he wears his first professional T-shirt. “I grew up through football. When I was thirteen, I joined the Tottenham football academies and played in the provincial championship. From that moment I knew that football would be my whole life”. Ara Bedrossian is modest and is very familiar with the secrets of a good athlete. He is shy by nature, a trait of his character, which makes him even more appealing as a legendary football personality. At the age of 17, he returns to Cyprus and because of some acquaintances, he ends up in APOEL. “Everything started from a friendly game. I gave two long balls and two goals were scored. This game gave me the opportunity to play in APOEL for 7 years. My life dream was to live in Cyprus and thankfully I have been living here in the island for 30 years”. That first game in APOEL is his ticket to the national football team of Cyprus and the beginning of an extraordinary football career. He leaves Cyprus a few years later and moves to England where he plays in the Premier League. Upon his return to Cyprus he halts his career as a football player. At the age of 35, he decides to turn all his years of experience and technical skills into becoming a coach and participates in multiple international coaching seminars. His goal as a coach is to inspire youth and to find the next best football talent of Cyprus. After working in various football academies he sets up his own football academy in cooperation with the English team Arsenal in search of the next generation of talent in football. 136 | S

С юных лет он играет в футбол всегда и везде. Его отец был чемпионом Кипра по теннису, но этот вид спорта не очень популярен в Англии, и по стопам своего отца он не пошел. Напротив – он выбрал самый популярный спорт в мире, а именно футбол. В школе он не блистал знаниями, но уже тогда был отменным футболистом и решил превратить свою страсть в профессию. Самым запоминающимся моментом для него стал день, когда он впервые примерил футболку своего первого клуба. - Я вырос в футболе. Когда мне было тринадцать я поступил в футбольную академию «Тоттенхема» и выступал в региональном турнире. Уже тогда я точно знал, что футбол станет делом всей моей жизни. Ара Бедросян отличается скромностью и отлично знаком с секретами хорошего спортсмена. Застенчивость – его черта, особенность характера, и это делает его еще более притягательным как легенду футбола. В возрасте 17 лет он возвращается на Кипр и благодаря знакомствам оказывается в клубе АПОЭЛ. - Первый матч был товарищеским. Я сделал две длинные передачи, которые привели к забитым мячам. Благодаря такому успешному началу я провел в составе АПОЭЛ целых семь лет. Я всегда мечтал жить на Кипре, и, к счастью, вот уже 30 лет живу здесь. Та первая игра за АПОЭЛ стала пропуском в сборную команду Кипра и послужила началом выдающейся футбольной карьеры. Спустя несколько лет он переезжает с Кипра в Англию и выступает в Премьер-лиге. По возвращении на Кипр он заканчивает с футболом. В возрасте 35 лет он принимает решение направить свой многолетний опыт и технические навыки на тренерскую работу и участвует в ряде международных тренерских семинаров. Свою задачу как тренера он видит в воспитании молодых талантов и поиске на Кипре способных футболистов. The Champ Cheerful, creative and only 36 years of age, Yiannis Yiapanis has earned the reputation of one of the most well-known Cypriot coaches, who will undoubtedly leave his mark in the history of the Cyprus volleyball league. He begins athletics at an early age, but volleyball is the sport that wins his heart, a sport, which he adores and is part of his life. After the Turkish invasion in 1974 in Cyprus, his parents move to Athens, where he is born. Upon the family’s return to Limassol, a few years later, Yiannis recalls his childhood memories related to his sporting performance, with great fondness and longs to return to his birthplace. In 1999, he leaves Cyprus to go to Komotini, where he studies gymnastics in the Komotini Gymnastic Academy. The university and his professors provide the kick-off to his dreams and inspirations. When he refers to his university years, he describes them as being the foundations of his life on both a professional and personal level. He meets the woman who will become his life companion and who serves to help develop his personality. In the beginning, he has to compromise, dedicate time and takes plenty of risks in order to succeed. He is fortunate enough to be rewarded with the very “best” that life has to offer. “I have never considered my profession to be a simple job but a tool that I will use to contribute to developing positive changes. I always bear in mind that children perceive us as role models and I do not want to let them down.” He started working in a gym and then gradually became a partner. Today, he is the co-owner of an impressive rehabilitation and fitness centre. At the beginning, he was reluctant to but realized that taking risks was inevitable. It was not long before the recognition came in the field of volley. “Volleyball was part of my life since my teenage years and I was only 26 years old when the Anorthosis club gave me the opportunity to be the volley coach of the club’s”. Success and victories followed due. He wins 5 championships in 5 years with the men’s team and in the sixth year earns the league cup title. His professional sporting wins trigger a thunderstorm of job proposals, which lead him to initially take on the position of trainer of the women’s national volley team. Thereafter, he moves to the men’s team until, he accepts the offer to coach the women’s volleyball team of Apollon Prestige. His move to Apollon Prestige is the most well thought out decision of his career and he feels privileged that the reputable and historical Cyprus team Apollon entrusts him. “Everything was a challenge from the beginning. My goal was to achieve optimal results and that is why I invested in this team by training internationally accredited female players who would bring the team to the top and so it happened”. Apollon Prestige proudly celebrates the 2013-2014, Championship, Super Cup and Cup wins, thus ranking the team in the first position of the national volleyball league. 138 | S

Я всегда думаю о том, что дети воспринимают нас своего рода моделями поведения и не хочу их разочаровывать. Свою трудовую деятельность он начал с работы в тренажерном зале, но впоследствии стал одним из его собственников. Сегодня он уже совладелец крупного спортивно-оздоровительного центра. Поначалу он еще сомневался, но быстро понял, что риски неизбежны. Признание на поприще волейбола не заставило себя долго ждать. - Волейбол – часть моей жизни еще с подросткового возраста, а когда «Анортосис» дал мне возможность попробовать себя в роли тренера мне было всего 26 лет. Вскоре пришли победы и наступил успех. Его мужская команда выигрывает 5 чемпионатов за 5 лет, а на шестой год завоевывает Кубок лиги. Вслед за спортивными достижениями на него обрушивается шквал предложений, и он становится главным тренером женской сборной страны по волейболу. Затем ему доверяют и мужскую сборную, а потом его приглашают возглавить женскую волейбольную команду «Аполлон Престиж». Сам он считает переход в «Аполлон Престиж» самым взвешенным решением своей тренерской карьеры и гордится, что его заботам доверили пользующуюся высокой репутацией титулованную кипрскую команду. - С самого начала для меня это был настоящий вызов. Я поставил целью добиться наивысших результатов и поступательно шел к достижению этой цели, посвящая все свое время тренировке волейболисток с мировым именем, которые должны были вывести команду на высший уровень, и у нас это получилось. «Аполлон Престиж» победил в Чемпионате и стал обладателем Кубка и Суперкубка 2013-2014 года, по праву взойдя на вершину волейбольной лиги страны.

The Mentor He travels a lot; he is constantly kept updated, and watches multiple games abroad. Antonis Konstantinides or otherwise “Tony” is a passionate coach whose prime motive is to reach the top. A father of two boys, he continually aims to teach them the benefits of sports: punctuality, respect and competiveness. “If these qualities are part of your life, then there is no doubt that you will become a better person” he states with an air confidence. He starts his coaching career in a paradoxical manner, by playing in the academies and thereafter steps up to the youth team and finally coaches the men’s team of Omonoia Nicosia. An unexpected incident leaves the team without a coach and Antonis, who is the captain of the team, is asked to act as the coach for only one game. Since that game, Antonis Constantinides has filled his resume with ten years of successful coaching with many championships, league cups and national wins. “Everything happened in a blink of an eye with successes following one after the other”, he adds. He studied journalism and worked as a journalist in a sports newspaper. He has been practicing as a professional coach for the last six years. “Professional coaches require continual education and training. Because of my explosive nature, this is how I was as an athlete as well, I had to find ways to tame my passion and become better as a professional coach”. His approach is never moderate and he always demands the winning place from his team. His successful career, as well as the club’s triumphant wins, start when he takes over the team of ETHA Engomis. They play in European competitions with powerful opponents and display an outstanding performance in Europe. They play against Turkey and Russia and win. Following these victories, one of the biggest athletics clubs in Cyprus, APOEL, approaches Antonis with a proposition to join the national team. “When APOEL made a proposal I found it very hard to choose to leave ETHA because ETHA had become my family. However, APOEL is a big club and we managed to win the championship this year.” In the same year he joins APOEL he decides to coach the men’s national basketball team after having served as the coach of the women’s national basketball team for four years. His dream is to coach a foreign team and contribute extensively to basketball. Participation in Sports, offers unforgettable moments and the victories are the reward of his labours, he says. Victory is not only his personal motive, but that of his players as well. 140 | S

С того момента в автобиографии Антониса Константинидиса появилась запись о десяти годах успешной тренерской деятельности, которые принесли множество чемпионских титулов, Кубков лиги и побед на национальном уровне. - Все произошло так стремительно, что я и глазом не успел моргнуть, - вспоминает он. Он изучал журналистику и работал корреспондентом одной спортивной газеты. Последние шесть лет он также работает тренером на профессиональном уровне. - Работающим на профессиональном поприще тренерам необходимо постоянное обучение и практика. Учитывая мой взрывной характер, который помогал мне в бытность спортсменом, мне пришлось придумать, как совладать с темпераментом ради тренерских успехов. Он никогда не признавал половинчатости и неизменно требовал у своей команды только побеждать. Начало его успешной карьеры и триумфальное шествие его команд стартовали, когда он взял бразды правления в клубе ЭТА (Энгоми). Им приходится играть в европейских турнирах с очень сильными соперниками, и надо сказать, что они смогли добиться на европейской арене немалых успехов. Им противостояли турецкие и российские команды, но они смогли одержать победы. После этих успехов один из ведущих спортивных клубов Кипра, АПОЭЛ, делает Антонису предложение перейти в национальную команду. - Когда «АПОЭЛ» обратился ко мне с предложением, мне было очень непросто уйти из ЭТА, потому что ЭТА стала моей семьей. Однако, АПОЭЛ - большой клуб, и в тот же год мы выиграли чемпионат. В тот год, когда он перешел в АПОЭЛ, он принимает решение тренировать мужскую сборную страны по баскетболу, имея за своими плечами опыт работы с женской сборной в течение четырех лет. Karo Costanian futsal

The Pioneer Strategic planning coupled with strong leadership, organisational and technical skills characterize Karo Costanian, who is best known and respected as the father, teacher and pioneer of futsal in Cyprus. The life of Karo Costanian resembles that of an athlete out of an old Greek movie. He begins his interaction with the sport of football by playing in dirty sand fields with wooden goal posts in the old neighborhoods of Nicosia, in the early 70’s. His leadership traits are evident from a young age, as he initiates a championship league and organizes games against the teams of other neighborhoods. Back then, there are no football academies, as we know them today. When he turns twelve, his parents enroll him in the Melkonian boarding school. He is a key player in the school’s championship league, leading his team to celebrate continual wins in the first place, by always maintaining the position of the center forward and is one of the best scorers. This period of his life paves the way for the success, which lies ahead in the later years to come. His biggest dream is to play in a big national team of the first division of the Cypriot championship. He enrolls in OMONOIA and plays in the second team for about two years. At that time, the “big names” of football are well established in the team, so he decides to take his life into his own hands by introducing and promoting the development of another sport “less known” for Cyprus standards, but which is closely related to football, that of Futsal or otherwise “indoor foot sala ”. Karo has a vision- to establish the sport on a national level and to inspire young players to embrace futsal and the sporting ethics that accompany this sporting passion. His mission is to form a futsal team that will receive national and European recognition and which will encourage others to follow suit. In 1984, he takes his first steps in coaching futsal and thereafter he builds a new futsal team, Ararat, with the support of the Armenian General Benevolent Union. “I was coaching, playing and analyzing games simultaneously. In 1988, we were asked to participate in a world tournament which was organized by the Armenian General Benevolent Union and this is how futsal became deeper integrated into my life. In 1987 the futsal team was ready to compete and we attended the tournament in Geneva. We played every two years in the World Armenian Tournament until 1988, when the federation in Cyprus, officially introduced futsal into the national league. The futsal championship comprised of 7 teams began competing on a national level, whilst the start of a successful sporting career for Karo unravels. He attends seminars in Cyprus, Italy and Armenia, followed by a decade full of success, which boasts 8 championships, 6 league cups, 4 doubles and 7 European participations. “I believed in the sport from the very first moment and my goal was to see the development of the team and the sport. I can’t help but remember how rewarding it felt the first year I coached the team and how we ended by winning the second place in Belgium”, he states proudly. For Karo, futsal is a wonderful sport, which requires skilled technique and which incorporates most of the elements and skills of football. 142 | S

Когда ему исполнилось двенадцать, родители отдали его в школу-интернат им. Мелконяна. Он становится ключевым игроком в школьной лиге, и его команда неизменно завоевывает первое место, а он играет в ней центрального форварда и неизменно соперничает за звание лучшего бомбардира. Этот период его жизни становится трамплином к ожидающему его успеху. Его главная мечта – выступать за одну из ведущих команд первого кипрского дивизиона. Его берут в «Омонию» и примерно два года он играет за дублеров. В те времена первую скрипку в команде играют футболисты с именем и непоколебимой позицией, и поэтому он принимает решение взять свою судьбу в свои руки и заняться развитием вида спорта, который на Кипре еще не известен, но имеет непосредственное отношение к футболу – футзалом или минифутболом в помещении. У Каро был план – вывести этот вид спорта на государственный уровень, привлечь в футзал молодых игроков и привить им любовь к этому спорту и его этику. В 1984 году он делает первые шаги: начинает проводить тренировки по футзалу и при содействии Армянского благотворительного общества создает первую команду – «Арарат». - Я одновременно и тренировал, и играл, и анализировал матчи. В 1988 году нас пригласили участвовать в международном турнире, который проводила Армянская благотворительная организация, и футзал еще глубже укоренился в моей жизни. В 1987 году команда по футзалу уже была готова играть в соревнованиях, и мы отправились на турнир в Женеву. Вплоть до 1988 года мы каждые два года принимали участие в Мировом армянском чемпионате, и, наконец, кипрская федерация официально признала футзал, и была сформирована национальная лига. В чемпионате страны по футзалу первоначально принимали участие 7 команд. Параллельно развивается успешная спортивная карьера Каро. Он участвует в семинарах на Кипре, в Италии и Армении и в течение десяти успешных лет завоевывает 8 чемпионских титулов, 6 Кубков лиги, 4 “дубля” и 7 раз принимает участие в европейских соревнованиях. - Я поверил в этот вид спорта с самого начала, а моя цель заключалась в том, чтобы развивать команду и спорт в целом. Yiannos Hadjigeorgiou Tennis

The Idol First class athlete in Cyprus and accredited Cypriot tennis coach. He counts numerous international successes along with being recognized as the best Cypriot tennis player. Yiannos Hatzigeorgiou is an idol for tennis fans, who follow his progress from the start of his career until today. He starts playing tennis at the age of eight and at the age of twelve, he begins competing in championship tournaments. He is always the number one player of his league. “When I started playing tennis, it was very difficult to play in tournaments outside of Cyprus and thus I only competed in local tournaments”. After some years, he decides to become a tennis coach. He attends seminars in various counties and it was after that period, that he becomes popular as a tennis coach. At a very young age, in his twenties, he attains his Advanced Certificate in coaching and starts working as a tennis coach on a professional level. He enters into cooperation with some tennis academies until he eventually establishes his own tennis club, which is very soon transformed into a Sporting Centre. It was not long before he becomes the national tennis coach of the Cypriot Tennis Federation, a position that he holds for 15 years. His professional career is full of successes and victories. “The whole procedure was always very pleasant and rewarding. I travelled a lot with the national teams.” In 2005 he coaches Marcos Pagdatis, international tennis champion, who was unknown at the time, for a period of six months and then returns to the Federation. “In 2007 I took over the coaching of Marcos Pagdatis for another year. That year we travelled a lot! Our base was France and for about 10 months we travelled continuously. Marcos ranked in the top fifteen athletes of the world. It was an unbelievable experience, full of successes and incredible feelings.” The best moment in his career is when Marcos Pagdatis makes it to the fourth round of the Australian Open. “I was so proud when I saw him playing against Federer”. In 2012 he works again with Marcos Pagdatis as his personal coach for a year and when he returns to Cyprus he sets up his new Tennis Academy with very high standards of international recognition. “In Cyprus, tennis is considered as the sport of the elite but Marcos’s success established the sport as one of the most popular one amongst the youth”, he states. “Talent is an inexhaustible source; there are always going to be talented children but what is more important is how you will manage and inspire this talent. National successes and excellence demands a lot of sacrifices,” adds Yiannos. “Being an athlete is a magical experience. Athletics is a way of life. Athletics mould and develop a person’s character. Above all it teaches respect and fair- play”. The world of tennis and sports ethics is a way of life for Yiannos Hadjigeorgiou. 144 | S

Her love for fashion and her passion for style led her to create her own brand with clothes plucked from a fairytale love story. She is inspired from the international fashion weeks and her love for the femininity of all ages. Remi Sabbah, the well known Lebanese fashion designer, had a good rapport with fashion from the early years of her life, and that’s why she got involved with this magic world. «I remember that from a very young age I was intrigued with clothing and fashion», she confesses. «Like every little girl I styled my Barbie dolls and made clothes for them. During my childhood I was constantly surrounded by fashion trends, since my father used to be a display designer for famous boutiques and stores in Lebanon, he would bring home new designs and fabrics and he even took me with him so that I could get a taste of his work», Remi says to me. That’s why I ask her how her experience in her childhood with fashion was, and she explains: «I grew up in an unconventional family, and I drew my inspiration from my dad, who assumed the role of my personal stylist. He used to bring home every new trend and design for me to choose from and he would give me his advices on how to style them. My grandmother loved styling and always used to style her own outfits. I will always cherish a pearl beaded jacket with precious stones and heirloom handcrafted by my grandmother that was passed down to my mother and then to me. It is a timeless piece with sentimental value», she reveals. An unexpected choice Is it true that you first studied journalism and public relations? Yes, I started studying journalism- I never completed my studies as I already believed that I had writing skills- so I decided to get a degree in the field of media and I got some experience working for pioneering Lebanese and Saudi Arabian newspapers. What appealed to me in the media and public relations studies was the creativity involved, I saw an opportunity to work alongside inspiring people, to build a network of acquaintances and

Yes, I did work as a reporter; I had the opportunity to meet politicians, entrepreneurs, artists and interesting personalities from all walks of life. I was also privileged to have met a lot of people involved in the world of fashion like photographers, designers, stylists and makeup consultants. And I am still very enthusiastic about meeting new people and I share my experiences in my blog, I apply my knowledge in journalism, my peoples skills and my knowledge in fashion, since I am the chief editor of my personal blog and all the brand’s media pages. From Cyprus to Milan How do you decide to move to Cyprus? Initially it wasn’t by choice that I moved to the island, but I came to love Cyprus and its unique beauty. My husband was given a promising career opportunity here, so I decided to move as well. It took me only a week or so to make up my mind to reside permanently after I started to discover the island. What was it that fascinated most in the country? There are actually a number of things I love about this country. Cyprus is a melting pot where people from different backgrounds and cultures can co-exist and create harmoniously. I also adore Cypriot gastronomy and the high quality wines. The diversity in nature is also intriguing, I love the beaches and the mountains, and I promote Cyprus as an ideal destination for a summer vacation through my blog. As a woman, I have always been involved with fashion on a personal level. After I decided to start my own brand I proceeded to study fashion design abroad. I then settled in Cyprus and I would say this might have been the key ingredient to my success. I do believe that inspiration has a fundamental role in creativity and since I live by the beach in a very calm yet intriguing place I benefit from these ideal parameters to fuel my work. The surrounding environment is truly breathtaking and enables me to evolve as an artist and pursue my dreams. How did you decide to go to Milan to study fashion design? It all happened rather quickly really. I remember having the epiphany on a rainy day, after I attended some sketch and design courses in Cyprus, I imagined myself living the Italian dream, walking through the streets in Milan. It was a decision I made right then and there, I am known for my spontaneity after all, so I simply booked my ticket, rented a flat and moved to Milan by Spring. Did you attend the Milan Fashion Week? How was that experience? I attended fashion weeks in various places around the world actually, but Milan will always have a special place in my heart. I have made a lot of acquaintances with people from the world of fashion there and I was fortunate enough to meet people who came to be my fashion consultants for the past two years and with whom I have enjoyed splendid collaborations. You have been featured in magazines like Vogue. Do you feel that this was a reward for your work? When a distinguished and world known fashion magazine such as Vogue writes about your work, I would say it’s a gift not only a reward. I am thankful for all features whether they are made by bloggers or magazines, since I consider them a sign of appreciation for my designs and I am truly grateful. Mademoiselle Epaulette What differentiates you from other fashion designers? It is the identity of my brand that differentiates me. I am building a community of women who share the same experience, namely that of Mademoiselle Epaulette. I want every woman who chose to wear my designs to feel unique, but at the same time feel part of Mademoiselle Epaulette. I believe that my designs are varied in style and they can thus be styled in different ways and for different personalities. I also love to feature women through Mademoiselle Epaulette, and they do not have to be involved in the world of fashion, they come from all sorts of different backgrounds, but they all have something in common, they choose to be part of the experience. I believe that strong emancipated women can achieve anything they set their mind into, that’s why I named my label Mademoiselle Epaulette – Lady with bold shoulders, women now have a strong firm stand in society. This is the main idea behind my community, a place where every woman is reassured and reminded of her power and her capacity. This direct approach is what I believe separates me from most designers; I want to engage with every woman who chooses to wear my designs. How did you develop your relationship with your clients? I maintain my own blog where I not only post on my personal everyday endeavors, but I also give fashion advice on styling. Sharing with women of Mademoiselle Epaulette is crucial for me; I also feature designs that are not from my collection giving my own personal reviews and tips on how to wear them. You have customers through your online shop from all over the world. How do you manage to communicate with so many different cultures? I travel the world and share my experiences on my blog. I am constantly exposed to different places and foreign cultures. I speak five languages and have made friends all over the globe (China, Paris, Italy, Cyprus, Lebanon and Russia). For me, communicating with people from different backgrounds was never an issue, I am rather fascinated when I come across someone from a different culture. I know that I have to approach people with a sense of respect and discretion, but I have been involved in public relations since my academic years and on a daily basis. I want to emphasize though that fashion brings people together and that I speak only one language with my clients that of Mademoiselle Epaulette fashion language. What is your dream in your professional career as a fashion designer? I want to promote my brand on a global level; I want the label to be recognized in Europe and around the world. I also want people to get to know my designs and appreciate my work. Most importantly, I want the Mademoiselle Epaulette community to grow and expand, I want to inspire people through my work and share my love for creativity and fashion design. Arena Corinthians, Sao Paulo As excitement reaches fever pitch for the very first match of 2014 FIFA World Cup on 14th June, when Brazil play Croatia at the new Sao Paulo stadium; the question everyone is asking is “will the stadium be ready in time?” It was always going to be close! The architect, Aníbal Coutinho who has led a group of 25 designers, travelled throughout Europe and the United States to seek out the very best elements in stadium design, adapting them within design of the Sao Paulo arena. There have been some exciting new ideas implemented, including an unprecedented new cooling system for the winter grass, which enables the lawn to stay in place without it having to be replaced by a summer lawn. The stadium will also contain only folding chairs, some with cushioned with arms rests, instead of the usual seating areas. The toilets are going to be more upmarket with marble and porcelain, and a fully automated ‘no touch system’. There will also be an enormous (LED) display board, the biggest ever of its kind. It has been confirmed officially that the huge glass roof will not be in place as is still undergoing safety testing. 156 | S

Camp Nou “Камп Ноу” (Барселона)
Camp Nou Stadium, Barcelona Camp Nou is the largest football stadium in Europe and the eleventh largest in the world in terms of capacity. The stadium has been the home of Football Club Barcelona since 1957. It has hosted numerous international matches at a senior level, including two UEFA Champions League finals and the football competition at the 1992 Summer Olympics. The Construction of Camp Nou began on 28th March 1954 when civil governor of Barcelona, Felipe Acedo Colunga, presided over the laying of the first stone, with a blessing from the Archbishop of Barcelona, Gregorio Modrego. Construction of the stadium took three years, in total, and was it officially opened on 24th September 1957. The stadium’s capacity has varied greatly over the years, opening at 106,146, but growing to 121,749 for the 1982 FIFA World Cup. The stadium underwent a facelift in 1994, in which the pitch was lowered by 2.5 meters, a new press box, new parking under the main grandstand, and new lighting and sound systems were all completed for the 1998-99 season. There are currently plans to remodel Camp Nou with work beginning in 2017 at a cost of €600 million, with a possible completion date of early 2021.

Olympic Stadium ‘Spyros Louis’, Athens The Athens Olympic Stadium, located in the area of Marousi of Athens, was named ‘Spyros Louis’ as a tribute to the winner of the marathon at the first Olympic Games of modern times in Athens in 1896. The stadium was originally designed in 1979 and completed in time to host the 1982 European Championships in Athletics. It was inaugurated by the President of Greece, at the time, Konstantinos Karamanlis, on 8th September 1982. The Athens Olympic stadium was extensively renovated for the 2004 Summer Olympics; including a distinctive curved roof which was innovatively positioned with Enerpac hydraulics. It was designed by Santiago Calatrava before the official re-opening on 30th July 2004. The stadium hosted both the and the closing ceremonies of the Olympics and held athletics events as well as the football final. The stadium’s attendance was reduced to 71,030 for the Olympics from an initial capacity of 75,000. The high tech turf system consists of natural grass in modular containers which incorporate both irrigation and drainage systems. The stadium is still in use, but other sporting venues such as the aquatic center, which was created specifically for the games, have unfortunately fallen into disuse and disrepair. 158 | S

Wembley Stadium, London Built on the original site, the once famous twin towers have made way for an iconic arch over the new stadium, which has been completely rebuilt and is now one of the most modern and breathtaking arenas in the world. The original Wembley Stadium which was known as the Empire Stadium was built as the centerpiece of the British Empire Exhibition at the end of the First World War. The new stadium opened in 2007 is once again, home to the England national side, as well as the FA Cup Final and Semi Finals, The Football League Cup Final, The FA Community Shield, The Football League Play Off Finals and The Rugby Football League Challenge Cup Final. Interestingly, the new pitch is four meters lower than the previous pitch; it has been enhanced by Desso technology, which combines synthetic grass with real grass in order to strengthen the surface of the pitch. This system enables multi-use of the venue, which also hosts rugby, American football and music events. The new stadium has a circumference of 1 km and there are now, 107 steps in famous trophy presentation route, were as the old stadium had a classic, 39 steps! 160 | S

YANKEE Stadium Стадион “Янки” (Нью-Йорк) Yankee Stadium, New York Constructed In in an amazing 284 working days, Yankee Stadium was ready for its inaugural game on 18th April, 1923. Official figures state 74,200 fans, having packed into Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, for their first glimpse of Baseball’s grandest ever facility. Because it was widely recognised that it was star player, Babe Ruth’s, fantastic talent and drawing power which had made the new stadium possible, it become known as ‘The House That Ruth Built.’ The stadium stayed the same for many years and was not extensively remodeled until 1976. The most striking change of this modernisation was the removal of the obstructive steel columns which supported the second and third decks as well as the roof. By cantilevering the upper decks and also lowering the playing field, which increased the slope of the lower stands; sight lines for the fans were dramatically improved. Although the once iconic roof was removed, an exciting and innovative design concept, which included an exact replica of the original roof façade, was positioned above the new scoreboard. This scoreboard was baseball’s first ever ‘telescreen’ which could provide instant replays of the action, using the very latest technology available at the time! 162 | S

Несмотря на исчезнувшую крышу, которая за многие годы превратилась в настоящий символ, эстетическую привлекательность стадиона удалось сохранить благодаря великолепному инновационному дизайну, в котором, среди прочего, появилась копия поверхности старой крыши, разместившаяся над новым табло.
