Many of the wisdom Proverbs use natural or agricultural elements as teaching tools. How poetic is it that God uses this same method to show us who God is in the life of Jesus?

Jesus’ life in the natural world is the ultimate tool for us to learn who God is and how God interacts with us as human beings.

OPENING PRAYER Christ came to be our King, and we have come to be Christ’s people. The King of Kings calls us to follow, so from lives of work and labor, of fruitfulness and failure, of family and community, we have come to follow him. Christ is our King.

The Chancel Choir is excited to present to you Schubert’s “Mass in G” this morning.

This choral staple by the late Classical/early Romantic composer, Franz Schubert, is a full presentation of one of the church’s most treasured liturgies: the Mass ordinary.

In the early church, and still today in the Catholic church, all of the text in this piece would be spoken, sung, or chanted in every worship service; so “ordinary” simply means “regular” or “default.” When someone says they’re going to “Mass,” this is what they mean – a chance to be a part of a centuries-old tradition of saying the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Agnus Dei, the Sanctus and Benedictus. And Schubert wrote this Mass when he was just 18 years old!

We will be singing in the traditional Latin and Greek, and here is a little bit about what you’ll hear: Sanctus/Benedictus | Sanctus, or “Holy,” is almost always said three times, just like when we sing the hymn “Holy, Holy, Holy.” These movements celebrate Jesus with the same words we use on Palm Sunday.

Credo | Every week, we affirm our faith in one form or another. This creed, the Nicene Creed, is one of the oldest Trinitarian affirmations, acknowledging the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Kyrie | This text almost always appears in ABA form; Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy. In this movement, a soloist sets apart the “Christ have mercy” text.

Agnus Dei | Each composer has a different interpretation of how it sounds for the Lamb of God (Agnus Dei) to take away our sins. This begins minor and dark, but ends major and settled as the choir sings “grant us peace.”

Gloria | We associate the words “Gloria in excelsis deo” with the Christmas hymn, “Angels We Have Heard on High.” Those lyrics come from this movement.

SANCTUS AND BENEDICTUS Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth.

Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua.

Hosanna in excelsis.

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts.

Heaven and earth are full of Thy glory.
