Love March 8, 2020 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary Many definitions exist for the word love, including the love of family, the love of a relationship, and the love of sacrifice. We discover the highest definition of love in the truest sacrifice: we know love through the cross. In fact, we cannot understand love without it.

CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP We Gather in God’s Name –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

OPENING PRAYER Thank you, God, for the opportunity of worship, for the freedom to be among your family, meeting together in your house and in the warmth of your embrace. Thank you that in worship we can put aside the uncertainties of this world and rest upon the certainties of the Kingdom. Thank you that we can bring to your feet all the hurts and fears that trouble us and leave them there, knowing that your strength and assurance are all that we require. Thank you for the opportunity as we draw near in worship to be transported from a world of concerns and fears to a place where we can be at peace in your presence, find healing, wholeness and refreshment. Thank you Lord God for the opportunity of worship. PRELUDE | Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier (Dearest Jesus, we are here) J.S. Bach, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist *OPENING HYMN | For the Beauty of the Earth 92 | Dix | Verses 1-6 1 For the beauty of the earth, for the glory of the skies, for the love which from our birth over and around us lies; Refrain: Lord of all, to thee we raise this our hymn of grateful praise. 2 For the beauty of each hour of the day and of the night, hill and vale, and tree and flower, sun and moon, and stars of light; (Refrain) 3 For the joy of ear and eye, for the heart and mind’s delight, for the mystic harmony linking sense to sound and sight; (Refrain)

4 For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, friends on earth and friends above, for all gentle thoughts and mild; (Refrain) 5 For thy church, that evermore lifteth holy hands above, offering up on every shore her pure sacrifice of love; (Refrain) 6 For thyself, best Gift Divine, to the world so freely given, for that great, great love of thine, peace on earth, and joy in heaven: (Refrain)

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

*Please rise in body or spirit. 2

+In this instance, catholic means universal.

*DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Emma Catherine Davis, daughter of Sean and Jessica Davis We are happy to celebrate your entrance into Christ’s holy church and welcome you into this church family. With you we renew our vows to uphold the church through worshiping, connecting, serving, and giving. With God’s help, we will shape our lives to follow the example of Christ, to surround you in steadfast love, so you may grow in the faith, and be confirmed and strengthened in the way that leads to abundant life. SUNG RESPONSE Jesus loves me still today, walking with me on my way, wanting as a friend to give light and love to all who live. Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so. MIDDLE HYMN | The Gift of Love 408 | Gift Of Love | Verses 1-3

OFFERTORY | My Shepherd Will Supply My Need Mack Wilberg, arranger | Chancel Choir My Shepherd will supply my need; Jehovah is His Name; In pastures fresh He makes me feed Beside the living stream. He brings my wand’ring spirit back When I forsake His ways, And leads me, for His mercy’s sake, In paths of truth and grace. When I walk thru the shades of death, Thy presence is my stay; A word of Thy supporting breath Drives all my fears away. Thy hand, in sight of all my foes, Doth still my table spread; My cup with blessings overflows; Thine oil anoints my head. continued 3

The sure provisions of my God Attend me all my days; O may Thy house be mine abode, And all my work be praise! There would I find a settled rest (While others go and come), No more a stranger or a guest, But like a child at home.

*CLOSING HYMN | Jesus, Thine All-Victorious Love 422 | Azmon | Verses 1-4 3 O that it now from heaven might fall 1 Jesus, thine all-victorious love and all my sins consume! shed in my heart abroad; Come, Holy Ghost, for thee I call, then shall my feet no longer rove, Spirit of burning, come! rooted and fixed in God. 2 O that in me the sacred fire might now begin to glow; burn up the dross of base desire and make the mountains flow!

4 Refining fire, go through my heart, illuminate my soul; scatter thy life through every part and sanctify the whole.

Community, Cross, and New Creation | Worship Series | Feb. 29/March 1-April 4/5 We are told the Bible is the source of a more fulfilling life, but it is too complicated to understand without God and God’s community walking through it with us. Understanding the Bible as a set of books in their normal order can seem like an almost impossible task. This series looks at three images that are present in every one of the 27 books of the New Testament. Reading the Bible with these three images in mind reveals a consistent moral vision: the promise of a new creation, only possible through community and the cross.
