Lamb March 1, 2020 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary

We worship God from the future, at which time Revelation reveals that the slaughtered lamb will be worshipped by every tribe, language, people and nation. The cross is the central point of the entire universe and through it, we are made to be a kingdom and priests serving our God.

CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP We Gather in God’s Name –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

OPENING PRAYER Loving God, as we enter this Lenten season, guide us to the path that leads to you. Fill our hearts with gratitude, patience, strength, and peace as we strive to be our best selves, honestly admitting our shortcomings and sins. Help us to accept others, even when it’s inconvenient, showing them your great love instead of casting judgment. Open our hearts and minds to your presence this day and every day. Amen. PRELUDE | I Need Thee Every Hour Seth Bingham, composer | Lee Dettra, organist *OPENING HYMN | We Have Come at Christ’s Own Bidding 2103 | Hyfrydol | Verses 1&2 We have come at Christ’s own bidding to this high and holy place, where we wait with hope and longing for some token of God’s grace. Here we pray for new assurance that our faith is not in vain, searching like those first disciples for a sign both clear and plain. Light breaks through our clouds and shadows, splendor bathes the flesh-joined Word, Moses and Elijah marvel as the heavenly voice is heard. Eyes and hearts behold with wonder how the Law and Prophets meet: Christ with garments drenched in brightness, stands transfigured and complete. *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

*Please rise in body or spirit.

+In this instance, catholic means universal.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION AND PARDON Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart. We have failed to be an obedient church. We have not done your will, we have broken your law, we have rebelled against your love, we have not loved our neighbors, and we have not heard the cry of the needy. Forgive us, we pray. Free us for joyful obedience, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. All pray in silence. Hear the good news: Christ died for us while we were yet sinners; that proves God’s love toward us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! Glory to God. Amen. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

*CLOSING HYMN | Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days 269 | Land Of Rest | Verses 1-5 Lord, who throughout these forty days for us didst fast and pray, teach us with thee to mourn our sins and close by thee to stay. As thou with Satan didst contend, and didst the victory win, O give us strength in thee to fight, in thee to conquer sin. As thou didst hunger bear, and thirst, so teach us, gracious Lord, to die to self, and chiefly live by thy most holy word. And through these days of penitence, and through thy passiontide, yea, evermore in life and death, Jesus, with us abide. Abide with us, that so, this life of suffering over past, an Easter of unending joy we may attain at last. *BENEDICTION POSTLUDE | Choral Song Samuel Sebastian Wesley, composer | Lee Dettra, organist Our offertory today is a traditional spiritual, and its meaning is as much about the eradication of slavery as it is about going home to heaven. It’s not a stretch to think enslaved people would want a chariot to “swing low” to the south and take them to the home of freedom, the north. The song was written by a slave near the Texas/ Oklahoma border, was banned by Nazi Germany as “undesired and harmful,” and helped narrate the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s. 4
