Suffering March 15, 2020 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary

While the world pursues the illusion of a pain-free life, as Christ followers we are honest in knowing that suffering is the way of the world. The story of the cross is a story of suffering, and to be a follower of Jesus is to participate in his sufferings and, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.

CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP We Gather in God’s Name

OPENING PRAYER

Lord our God, blessed is the one who comes in your name! Gather us in your gentle presence, as a hen shelters her brood beneath her wings. Finish the work you have begun in us so that we may show your glory; through Jesus Christ, our redeemer, our peace. Amen. PRELUDE | Variations on “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing” Albert L. Travis, composer | Jody Lindh, organist *OPENING HYMN | Be Still, My Soul 534 | Finlandia | Verses 1-3 Be still, my soul: the Lord is on your side. Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain; leave to your God to order and provide; in every change God faithful will remain. Be still, my soul: your best, your heavenly friend through thorny ways leads to a joyful end. Be still, my soul: your God will undertake to guide the future, as in ages past. Your hope, your confidence let nothing shake; all now mysterious shall be bright at last. Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know the Christ who ruled them while he dwelt below. Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on when we shall be forever with the Lord, when disappointment, grief, and fear are gone, sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored. Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past, all safe and blessed we shall meet at last. *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

*Please rise in body or spirit. 2

+In this instance, catholic means universal.

SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Grace Caroline Farmer, daughter of Danny and Calli Farmer We are happy to celebrate your entrance into Christ’s holy church and welcome you into this church family. With you we renew our vows to uphold the church through worshiping, connecting, serving, and giving. With God’s help, we will shape our lives to follow the example of Christ, to surround you in steadfast love, so you may grow in the faith, and be confirmed and strengthened in the way that leads to abundant life. SUNG RESPONSE Jesus loves me still today, walking with me on my way, wanting as a friend to give light and love to all who live. Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! OFFERTORY | How Can I Keep From Singing Taylor Davis, composer | Chancel Choir; Cindy Harder, clarinet My life flows on in endless song; above earth’s lamentation. I hear the clear, though far-off hymn that hails a new creation. Through all the tumult and the strife, I hear that music ringing. It finds an echo in my soul. How can I keep from singing? While though the tempest loudly roars, I hear the truth, it liveth. And though the darkness ‘round me close, songs in the night it giveth. No storm can shake my inmost calm while to that rock I’m clinging. Since love is Lord of heaven and earth, how can I keep from singing? When tyrants tremble sick with fear and hear their death knell ringing, When friends rejoice both far and near how can I keep from singing? In prison cell and dungeon vile our thoughts to them are winging, When friends by shame are undefiled how can I keep from singing?

*CLOSING HYMN | He Leadeth Me: O Blessed Thought 128 | He Leadeth Me | Verses 1-4 He leadeth me: O blessed thought! O words with heavenly comfort fraught! Whate’er I do, where’er I be, still ‘tis God’s hand that leadeth me. Refrain: He leadeth me, he leadeth me, by his own hand he leadeth me; his faithful follower I would be, for by his hand he leadeth me. Sometimes mid scenes of deepest gloom, sometimes where Eden’s bowers bloom, by waters still, o’er troubled sea, still ‘tis his hand that leadeth me. [Refrain] Lord, I would place my hand in thine, nor ever murmur nor repine; content, whatever lot I see, since ‘tis my God that leadeth me. [Refrain] And when my task on earth is done, when by thy grace the victory’s won, e’en death’s cold wave I will not flee, since God through Jordan leadeth me. [Refrain] *BENEDICTION POSTLUDE | Prelude in F-minor, BWV 534 Johann Sebastian Bach, composer | Jody Lindh, organist Please drop your offering in the offering plates located by the Sanctuary doors. Community, Cross, and New Creation | Worship Series | Through April 4/5 We are told the Bible is the source of a more fulfilling life, but it is too complicated to understand without God and God’s community walking through it with us. Understanding the Bible as a set of books in their normal order can seem like an almost impossible task. This series looks at three images that are present in every one of the 27 books of the New Testament. Reading the Bible with these three images in mind reveals a consistent moral vision: the promise of a new creation, only possible through community and the cross. Lenten Devotional | Our prayer is that during this Lenten season you will discover Jesus in a deeper way. Join us and read a daily devotional written by St. Andrew ministry leaders.
