Year 12 Student Reflections
A
s a Year 12 student sitting my HSC during the current COVID-19 pandemic, I found it hard to stay motivated and on top of my studies. This was a different me compared to the start of Year 12 back in October Alex Mullan 2020, which feels like an eternity ago. I was eager to get started and be on top of my studies and try my very best in all endeavours of my life. Term 2 was one of the best terms; being appointed 1st Grade Soccer Captain. This was a great motivator in my studies and sport life and helped me stay on track with school assessments. Along with this was having a great bunch of mates supporting me the whole time, which was really beneficial and we all bounced off each other during the hard times. I would call friends to help with schoolwork or just to catch up and I found this helpful with understanding ideas or concepts we had learnt or weren’t too sure about. Also, explaining the content to someone else helped me further. I received a majority of my strength to push through from my family, especially my parents. They always put things into perspective with how achieving great results can benefit me in the long run with my future career. There were some tough moments, with not seeing family or friends, and this did dampen my spirits, but with the future looking good with lockdown restrictions easing, not only have my spirits changed, but my friends and family’s spirits have also lifted. One of the best parts of online schooling has been the very first thing that I do in the school day and that’s joining the Homeroom team’s call. The teachers and Year Leaders have been very entertaining and making sure the start to the day has always been fun.
O
ver the past two years, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at St Gregory’s. During my time at the College, I have been fortunate enough to make plenty of new mates through boarding and coJames Sykes curricular activities. Although COVID has impacted the amount of time I have been able to spend at school, I am grateful for all the opportunities the College has given me. Throughout this year, COVID has forced us to embrace online learning which has had many impacts on our academic and sporting endeavours. Although these impacts have been difficult, I believe I have coped well whilst being back home, as I have been able to spend plenty of time with my family and mates. The major impacts for me have been not being able to have face to face learning with teachers, to ask questions or get help, not being able to participate in sport and not being able to see my school mates for a long period of time. I have had the resilience to overcome these challenges through keeping a positive mindset towards my learning.
