South Coast Steer School Spectacular

Miss Hayley Mahoney - Leader of Learning - Agriculture

For three years, Cadfor Murray Greys at Binda, owned by Mr Rod Hoare and Helena Warren, have partnered with a school to participate in the South Coast School Steer Spectacular. For two years, it was Chevalier College in the Southern Highlands and this year St Gregory’s College at Campbelltown. Rod is an Old Boy of the College, so it held a special place in his heart to undertake this partnership.

As part of the Year 9 Agriculture program, the students learn about beef cattle. As a result of this, the College incorporated the South Coast School Steer event into their teaching and learning. We received two Murray Grey steers for the competition. The students broke them in, prepared them and designed their feeding regime. The steers were fed DDG pellets (kindly donated by Manildra feed), oaten chaff, oaten hay and pasture. They weighed 269kg and 270kg when they arrived at St Gregory’s. Their final weights were 366kg and 320kg.
