Pippin

Page 1

On behalf of the St Joseph’s Collegiate Institute community, I welcome you to our production of the Tony Award-winning 1972 musical Pippin I’d also like to congratulate everyone involved with the staging of this Broadway classic, written by Stephen Schwartz and directed by the legendary Bob Fosse Our actors and actresses have worked incredibly hard for months to stage this spectacular coming-of-age production, and I thank you for being here this evening to support them. We are excited to once again stage our musical in SJCI’s very own Cullen Center for the Arts!

Amidst the exuberant songs and intricate choreography, Pippin is the story of a young man’s journey to find himself and find joy in life Loosely based on the life of Pepin the Hunchback, the first son of Charlemagne, the story follows Pippin as he experiences war, politics, love, deceit, and selfishness on his way to discovering what brings true joy to man’s life The “fourth wall” is broken throughout Pippin's journey to draw the audience deeper into the story and give this classic its unique and playful feel.

This performance of Pippin is a testament to the talent and dedication of our cast, orchestra, and crew - from St. Joe’s and other area high schools. These young men and women have rehearsed for countless hours over the past few months, and I am very grateful for their passion and effort. I am also thankful to the parents and guardians of our performers, who have spent countless hours helping our students learn their lines and shuttling our students to and from rehearsals

Many thanks go to our talented Director and Co-Producer, Paschal Frisina III ‘96, a member of our Fine Arts faculty and a recognizable member of the Western New York theatrical community. I would also like to thank the crew assisting Paschal, including Choreographer Michael Deeb Weaver, Vocal Director and Music Teacher Michael Hooker ‘06, Orchestra Director and Instrumental Music Teacher Jeff Walling, Co-Producer and Religion Teacher Ed Reilly, Technical Director Steve Harter, Costume Designer Nancy Watts, and Poster Coordinator/Set Painter and Art Teacher Jess Scibetta These passionate adults care deeply about our students and the Theatre Arts, and their efforts allow our students to have the opportunity to participate in such a high-quality production

Finally, thank you for supporting our students and the Theatre Arts at St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute I am so pleased to welcome you to this performance and hope you enjoy SJCI’s rendition of Pippin!

Enjoy the show,

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Welcome to our production of Pippin! Although I am entering my 16th year of directing, I was not short on inspiration for this year’s show based solely on the immense talent of our students. Working with these incredibly accomplished and dedicated students has been an honor! However, before I speak on their work over the past several months, the teacher in me would like to offer a bit of a history lesson about the show.

Steven Schwartz wrote the original version of Pippin as an undergrad student at Carnegie Mellon University in the late 1960’s. It sat on a shelf for several years until Schwartz had some success with another show he wrote, Godspell. Producer Stuart Ostrow finally agreed to produce Pippin, but only with Bob Fosse as director and choreographer, and only if Schwartz was willing to rewrite some of the music. With Fosse, the hottest choreographer on Broadway, on board and Schwartz tweaking the music accordingly, the show became a runaway success in its first year of production. It ran for 5 years until it closed in 1977.

Pippin was produced on Broadway when the U.S. was involved in a seemingly never-ending war in Vietnam. The story revolves around a young man trying to find happiness as he learns about war, love, and social inequality. Sound familiar? The show had a brief return to Broadway in 2013, in which Schwartz had the chance to change his score one more time to his liking. That is the version we proudly present today. Many people often think of Pippin as a “1970s show,” but I found the lines, songs, and action to be highly relevant in our modern times for our current students. Ultimately, I truly believe that it resonates as much today as it did in the era it was written.

The themes of self-discovery, trust in relationships, and self-care/mental health are woven beautifully throughout the production, and each student has made me so proud by taking a leap with their performance abilities to tell this story in an honest , organic way. Working and studying this show with these students has been an absolute joy. Each rehearsal day brought on challenges that we were able to work our way through as a collective, collaborative team. Each day brought on moments of intense learning and struggles as we navigated our way through the complex, sophisticated story we bring you today.

This “play within a play,” written masterfully by Schwartz, is just as rewarding an experience for the audience as it is for the actors. It is a Greek Theatre style “cathartic” experience; so as an audience member, I challenge you to find the “Pippin” in yourself. Have you achieved what you want in your life? Have you “found” what makes you happy? Have you found your “corner of the sky?” Better hurry because “spring will turn to fall in just no time at all!”

Thank you for joining us! Enjoy!
