Located in Florence, Sant’Orsola has a rich history which dates back to 1309. In the beginning, it was constructed to be a Benedictine convent and by 1435, it transitioned to a Franciscan convent; reflecting shifts in religious orders. Over the next three centuries, between 1327 and 1627, the complex underwent significant expansions, including Baroque renovations that introducd grand alterpieces, enhancing its artistic and architectural importance. However, by 1773, Grand Duke Leopold of Lorraine suppressed the convent as part of his broader reforms aimed at reducing the influence of religious institutions.
The convent’s religious role ended in 1808 when Napoleon’s edict dissolved its function, transferring it to state ownership. Between 1816 and 1818, Sant’Orsola was then repurposed as a tobacco factory. By 2009, it ownsership was transferred to the Province of Florence and subsequently to the Metropolitan City of Florence, marking its continued evolution within the city.
